Rick's book is wonderfully comprehensive and has great illustrative photgraphs. The prose is honest, personable, and not confusing. This book has been instrumental in opening my eyes to the beautiful and diverse world of ornamental grasses, and I believe it will helpful to many a gardener in the processes of selecting and caring for ornamental grasses.

Not My Favorite Book.......2007-07-23

This classic coffee table book features prominent villages in Provence. The birdseye photography is lovely, but this collection could benefit from pictures that take you into the town and show the reader what makes each one distinct. I own a half dozen books that profile French gardens, homes and interiors - this is not my favorite book.

If you, like me, cannot afford to travel to the south of France, this large-format book is the next best thing!!! Its stunning photography will really enchant you and leave you with a sense of regret that you cannot be there now, at this exact moment. Looking at the beautiful pictures of old but graceful buildings, narrow streets and dramatic landscapes you can almost sense certain serenity permeating those ageless country towns of Provence, endlessly basking in the golden rays of sun... Excellent Book.......2005-11-13

This is the Rattle Snake Bible. Klauber was not only the head of the San Diego Zoos reptile house for many years, he still is referenced in association with rattlesnakes as the formost expert years after his death and it is well deserved. His research was ground breaking (although now it seems elementary in some ways I.E. his heat pit research.) and interesting to read. Its no wonder they chose to name the banded rock rattle snake in his honor (crotalus viridis klauberii).

decades after it's publication, still the best!.......2004-07-22

This book is still the best book on rattlesnakes, decades after it was published. That alone ought to stand as a testament to the value this book has. The author brought an incredibly analytical mind to this book, and it shows. Some of the medical information is out of date, as is some of the taxonomy, but much on the habitats, morphology, ecology, interaction with man, etc. still holds true.

His work on the rattlesnakes strike, on comparitive morphology of the two genera, etc. still stand. This book covers rattlesnakes in incredible depth, going over every detail of these serpents. It's a godsend for those of us interested in rattlers. This book leaves no stone unturned (herping joke, sorry). It covers it's subject matter completly and professionally, and is well worth having on the bookshelf as a reference. If you like rattlers, or for that matter find zoology interesting, this book is a worthwhile read. If only more herpetological text were near as thorough as this one...

Anything and everything you need to know about these great reptiles! Status, morphology, the rattle, bodily functions, behavior, population and ecology, food, reproduction, venom apparatus, envenomation and its effects, treatment and prevention of envenomation, control an utilization, enemies of rattlesnakes, Indians and rattlesnakes, post-Columbian knowledge of rattlesnakes, myths, folklore and tall stories.

A truly interesting book.......2002-07-12

I read this book in the mid 90's just for the heck of it, and found it to be wonderful. The style is neither dryly academic nor breathlessly tabloid, but just right. The text answers almost all possible questions about rattlesnake life, legends, myths, and taxonomy that one could think of. It is one of the few books I have read that could be used as either a reference or vacation book.

This volume deals with temple ritual texts from ancient Mesopotamia, in particular from the cities Uruk and Babylon. Key question is whether they are a reliable source of information on the cult practices in Uruk and Babylon during the Hellenistic period. In the book an extensive description is presented of the festivals, rituals, ceremonies and offerings in Hellenistic Mesopotamia. The appendix consists of a selection of the most important temple ritual texts, which are presented in transliteration, translation and with philological comments. Four plates with so far unpublished text fragments are also included. The evidence clearly shows how important the public cults were in Hellenistic times, at least until the first century B.C., and how active the Mesopotamians were in matters of religion and cult during this period.

One of the co-authors of this book operates a river outfitting business, Upper Missouri River Guides, and thus has first hand knowledge of the Upper Missouri; the second co-author worked as a Bureau of Land Management River Manager for the Upper Missouri, and is a past president of the non-profit National Association for Interpretation.

This book is the only available guide book for Montana's Upper Missouri National Wild and Scenic River, and the Upper Missouri River Breaks National Monument. Having this book in your canoe will significantly enhahce your experience on the river. The core of the book is the "History Digest", consisting of a 175 page, mile-by-mile river log of historic events and locations along the river, keyed to the U.S. Bureau of Land Management maps that are commonly used by floaters. Canoe paddlers can identify their location on the BLM maps, and cross-reference their location with the History Digest to read about the history of that particular location.

The history digest includes over one hundred descriptive narratives which provide interesting information about each of the thirteen Lewis and Clark campsites on the Upper Missouri, as well as on the fur trading fort sites, steamboat landings, Indian habitation sites, and the old homestead buildings that floaters pass on the river.

Great guidebook based on experience by the authors........2003-03-17

Glenn Monahan's book, Montana's Wild and Scenic Upper Missouri River, 2nd edition, is written clearly and accurately. Lewis and Clark first described this portion of the Missouri in their annals of 1805. Construction of the Fort Peck Dam has changed the course of the river since that date. And one will not see grizzly bear or buffalo as documented by the Expedition in what was then Montana Territory.

Inspiring, realistic and spiritual book.......2005-08-27

Father Greg Boyle has done miracles that not everyone can do in working with youth at-risk, especially Latino gang members of East Los Angeles (the "mother-island" of gangs). It ONLY takes a special and unique person to attract and aquire respect from the so-called "lost human-beings" that are involved in gangs. Not all adults see these latino youth as "human beings" whatsoever. Father Greg deserves MORE recognition for what he has done in the Pico/Aliso neighborhoods. Highly recommend this book. May GOD bless "G."

Fremon's account of Father Greg's early 1990's work in Boyle Heights, CA. is as moving and powerful a work as one is likely to read. The fact that this book is out of print (currently) is a crime!

a great book!.......2001-11-01

I teach criminal justice courses at Dodge City Community College. One of the topics most students are interested in is hispanic gangs. I found this book to be excellent, and a number of students have also said positive things about the book. It gives the reader a realistic view of gang life in LA, and Father Greg's work is very encouraging. I tell my students that 1 person can make a difference in life, but most don't believe me. The book not only depited gang members and their lives, it also demonstrated some programs that were effective. I highly recommend the book!

I had the pleasure of hearing Father Greg Boyle speak in my religion class at Santa Clara University earlier this year. I enjoyed his talk so much, I went to a subsequent one and it was there I was first introduced to his book. A wonderful book to compliment a wonderful person. Father Greg is truly an angel in human form.
