In the first part of the book the authors introduce the reader to the general conditions relating to the cultivation of edible plants, such as the nature of the soil, irrigation, and the struggle against pests and diseases. The second part, which forms the bulk of the book, consists of an exhaustive alphabetical descriptive catalog of more than 9,000 genera and species, based on first-hand experimental data and illustrated with line drawings. The final part of the book contains an analytical index of genera (by type and use) and a comprehensive key of over 6,000 common plant names.

This volume is an account of the flowering plant flora of West Africa south of the Sahara (Gambiaâ€“Nigeria inclusive) with the emphasis upon species of ecological or economic importance. The vegetative and reproductive morphological characters, pollination and dispersal mechanisms of representatives of 38 families are described, and these families appear in the same order as in the Flora od West Tropical Africa. The first chapter deals with interspecific relationships (between flowering plant species, and between these and bacteria, fungi and animals), while the second chapter describes the vegetation formed by the flowering plant species of West Africa. Then follow the family chapters, each one ending with a section on the field recognition of its most important species, and a bibliography of the most recent literature, so that further studies may be pursued. This flora should prove to be of value to teachers and students of tropical biology, agriculture, forestry and economic botany.

Not for the budget traveller.......2007-04-13

Fodors provides an overview of places. The information is accurate but it skips out a lot of places that arent on the tourist trail. Personally if found myself reading my freinds guidebooks for more detailed information. Dont bother with this if you are a backpacker or budget traveller, or want detailed information. Go for Rough Guides or Lonely Planet.

Good Guide For Travellers On A Mid Range Budget.......2007-02-12

In my younger backpacking days I used to think of Fodor's as guidebooks for rich old tourists. But at age 39 and now inclined towards mid range travel, I find Fodor's to be better than expected.

This guidebook covers all 7 Central American countries in detail, with slightly more space devoted to the most popular countries such as Costa Rica and Guatemala. Their travel writers have a approach towards travel that is both adventurous and respectful. But without the sort of self-righteous political correctness that mars many Lonely Planet guides nowadays.

Those travelling on an extremely tight budget might still prefer LP or Moon guidebooks for their greater variety of low-end hotels. But for most travellers I think Fodor's would be a worthy purchase.

We used the book religiously on our trip to Costa Rica. It was helpful in finding some of the best areas, but we relied on help from the locals to find the good stuff.

An absolute treasure of a travel guide!.......1999-04-03

When touring Costa Rica, it is very difficult to eliminate options.... the country is so beautiful, the topography so diverse. This book zeroes right in on the best, the 'must see' and 'highly recommended' attractions. It also offers a wonderful assortment of colored photographs.

I highly recommend this travel guide, especially for a first-time traveler to Costa Rica, or one who has limited time to explore the wonders of this diverse and enchanting environment!

Disappointing and discouraging guide to Costa Rica.......1998-03-06

The only positive thing I can say about this book is that the photographs are excellent. The content, leaves much to be desired. The author, Fiona Dunlap spends much of this book complaining and insulting - from bad road conditions to long lines, it's negative all around. Ms. Dunlap definitely give the impression that she greatly disliked her stay in Costa Rica. Very disappointing.

Greyhounds have been revered since ancient times where they appear on the walls of the tombs of the Pharos. For Henry VIII they were his favourite hunting dogs. But in Laura Thompson's book we find a personal testament to a more modern chapter in the history of this noble creature.

Greyhound racing in the United Kingdom came to prominence in the dark economic recession of the 30's, being in some ways a cameo of its elder sister - horse racing. Sharing a deep and longstanding affiliation with Ireland champion racing greyhounds, like cup-winning racehorses, often drew their first breath on the other side of the Irish Sea.

Laura Thompson's book takes us right into the heart of people, places and of course the dogs she knew as a child. With the hindsight of an age in which some of the great Stadia like White City in West London have already been lost, she takes us on a journey which immortalises a generation of owners and trainers.

For anybody who has ever spent an evening at a Greyhound Stadium and wondered what lay behind it all.. this book is the inside track.

Give The Dogs five bones - !.......2002-02-09

This is not just a history of greyhound racing, it is a deeply moving personal insight into Laura Thompson, her love for dogs and her love for the father who owned and raced them. The book is Fever Pitch with heart; I wept buckets reading the damn thing. It is full of compassion for the greyhounds who run in the name of business and sport, and full of guilt for the fact that they give so much pleasure while being used, all too often, as playthings. It is also a journey into a completely separate world of which I hitherto knew nothing, and which came wonderfully alive for me. I found this book by accident in a second hand shop and couldn't help myself from wanting to say something about it - it is really beautiful.

Eleven years before Uncle Tom's Cabin fanned the fires of abolition in North America, an aristocratic Cuban woman told an impassioned story of the fatal love of a mulatto slave for his white owner's daughter. So controversial was Sab's theme of miscegenation and its parallel between the powerlessness and enslavement of blacks and the economic and matrimonial subservience of women that the book was not published in Cuba until 1914, seventy-three years after its original 1841 publication in Spain.

Also included in the volume is Avellaneda's Autobiography (1839), whose portrait of an intelligent, flamboyant woman struggling against the restrictions of her era amplifies the novel's exploration of the patriarchal oppression of minorities and women.

Romantic vision of Cuba.......2000-11-30

This novel is a great example of romantic literature from Cuba in the 1840's. It was written before Uncle Tom's Cabin but still shows the situation of slaves and the need for reform. A must read for people interested in slavery or early female writers. The romantic movement in literature is very strong in this book but still provides a great historical viewpoint.

Nice book. But where is the beef? If you have Mindy Martins book you're all set and this one doesn't offer much news. Actually, it includes a chapter about the Digital Dashboard Resource Kit 2.x which is now obsolete after the release of SharePoint Portal Server.

A great book for anyone looking to recognize and even develop his/her intuitive state. The author provides easy to understand examples from his lead characters journey through adolescence. The story leaves the reader with a better understanding of how ones intuition and how it's different from instinct and/or rational thought.

MVP of Intuitive State.......2007-03-06

I was recommended this book by a couple people. It was a great read that flowed well and kept the reader engaged the entire book. Not only was the story interesting, but the book has a LOT of underlining meanings and ways to incorporate intuition in my life, which is what drew me to it originally. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who is interested in their own inner voice.

A must have book for all school libraries........2002-03-19

I'm writing this on behalf of my 6 year old son who is a New Jersey Devils fan and admirer of Scott Gomez. The book is informative and well written. We find out how old Scott was when he took up hockey(age 5)and how Scott worked his way up the league and eventually into the NHL. Scott Gomez is a genuine roll model for young people and especially young Hispanics who don't think other Hispanics played hockey(we are stereotypicaly boxers who don't know how to do anything else). I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys the sport or is a new fan of hockey. What is really warm about this is how close Scott is to his dad, Carlos, and what a tight knit family they are.
