The fourth purpose of this book is to encourage you to use these plants in your own backyards and gardens. Many of these plants can be successfully used to enhance the landscape design. Often this can be done as effortlessly as collecting seeds or digging a plant or two. However, care must be taken not to violate any laws or the integrity of another's property. Many wildflower gardeners are willing to share. Wildflower gardening is very popular and many gift catalogs exist as well as local garden shops that can take care of your needs. As this book cannot possibly cover all the wildflowers, the fifth purpose is to pique your curiosity and encourage you to learn more about other plants and wildflowers.

"Insight" offers just that.......2007-09-03

My criticisms of this book, as of other Insight guides, is that they aren't updated often enough, and the hotel and restaurant suggestions are sparse, to say the least. However, as a cultural, arts, historical, and sightseeing guide to the city in question, I think this is an excellent guide book. Not as detailed nor as dry as Michelin Green, but not as
superficial as Frommers or Fodors when it comes to culture and history.
I recommend the book, but you'll want an additional resource, especially for restaurants.

This book is for the serious reader and the space enthusiast who sees Mars as a real future endeavor. If you believe in the reality of space exploration and wish to see just how we can go about getting there, then this book is for you. There is also poetry, light hearted looks at Mars themes, etc. It comes with a CD as well. It is a culmination of several serious space related authors who came together, like Lewis & Clark, to explore new frontiers. Only this time they look beyond our blue planet.

only for the serious amateur/scientist.......2007-09-11

this book is actually a collection of scientific papers on the topic of Mars mission planning. If you are not a serious scientist or amateur engrossed in the subject you will be bored. I was expecting more material from Zubrin. I recommend instead Pale Blue Dot by Carl Sagan

I really like the 'down-to-earth' suggestions/comments. Enjoyable reading even quite humorous!

Lots of Recipes/Remedies using fairly common household items which are easily accesible & inexpensive. Instead of reading several products in the aisles, make your own right at home!! Things you use regularly may benefit your plants (EX: fling that banana peel in your rose bed - they'll thrive!)

Discusses many things from growing/caring for/etc Trees/Shrubs/Flowers to warding off unwanted 'pests' etc.

Good book to have. I'll be pulling it off the shelf often!

Boy, do I LOVE this book! I'm just a casual gardener, but boy, if you have nasty soil, need help getting your lawn started, garden started, problem with trees and plants, grab this book. I can tell you for a fact that that tonic Jerry has in this book for trees is just tremendous! Who would think that putting whiskey, beer, peroxide and jello on your trees would just make them grow huge in no time at all. My trees just love this stuff and I'm just thrilled with the results of all the recipes I've tried in this book. Plus, if you have problems with any plants you currently have, it's probably addressed in this book. Baker is the country's #1 gardener and this book shows why. I'm very thankful that I purchased it and got it for a great price on amazon.com. If you have roses and have trouble, this book is for you. He even tells you how to get rid of every bug imaginable. Also, if you're having trouble with your lawn, the remedy is in this book. Plus, Baker tells you how to select the proper plants for your area, and even outlines designs for you to have a nicely planted yard. He recommends what trees to plant as well and how they should be planted to take root quickly. He gives recipes for many tonics to get them off to a great start. Again, I can't emphasize how much this book has done for my garden. Now I'm attacking my clay soil and following Baker's advice. My yard is the best in the neighborhood!

Overload.......2004-06-15

I just finished reading this book and, while it contains some good advice, I'll probably wait until I retire to use most of it. This is definitely for a hard core gardener, not a casual gardener like myself. There are so many different plant "tonic" recipes, it's hard to know which ones to use. If I followed all the advice found in this book, I'd never get anything else done.

Based on direct observations, private interviews, and careful textual and historical analysis, Stuart Chandler looks at the challenges faced by Master Xingyun and his followers as they try to adhere to traditional practices and values while tapping into the advantages afforded by modern, global society. Foguangshan's slogans ("Humanistic Buddhism" and "Establishing a Pure Land on Earth") are placed in historical context to reveal their role in shaping the group's attitudes toward capitalism, women's rights, and democracy, as well as toward the traditional Chinese virtue of filial piety and the Chinese Buddhist concept of "links of affinity" (jieyuan). Chandler goes on to analyze Foguangshan's educational system and its understanding of how precepts relate to contemporary problems such as abortion and capital punishment. A short drive from Newark's white suburbia is the desolation of the Central Ward. Drawn there initially to photograph the complexity she saw in the faces on the neighborhood children, Helen M. Stummer continued her work in the Central Ward for over a decade, focusing on one of the neighborhood's residents, Carol, and her family and neighbors. Following Carol's day-to-day life, Stummer documents with vivid photographs and compelling narrative the abysmal deterioration of this innercity neighborhood, its run-down buildings slated for demolition, the empty lots where children play amidst old tires, garbage, and broken glass. But No Easy Walkalso celebrates Carol's hopes and struggles for a better life and her spirit of generosity and compassion.

Carol, a single mother with little income and resources, is a critical link in her neighborhood's social network of survival, giving food to those who have none, passing along massages to neighbors without phone service, giving children clothes so that they can attend school. Though we see her getting worn down, we also see her return to school to earn her high school diploma (with honors), get engaged to be married, help her children with their homework, and care for her parents.

Stummer was not only an observer but a pupil of the Central Ward, forced to learn the ways of survival during her visits. In stark contrast to the comfort and safety of her own suburban community, terror lurks in the Central Ward's dark and dilapidated hallways and in the foreboding presence of drug dealers, child molesters, and burglars. It is a neighborhood where residents battle against police harassment, the catch-22 of welfare restrictions, unsympathetic health care and school systems, and absentee landlords, where people desperate for housing must look at the nearby construction of malls and middle-class homes and realize it is clearly not meant for them.

I simply could not believe what a gem of a book this turned out to be! The insight the author has for all the personal relationships behind the public eyes and the pictures that detailed the chapters were so marvelous I could not believe this has not been made as a starting point for ones research into the history of Texas. I highly recommend this book!
