Book Description
This eighth volume in the comprehensive Illustrated Flora of Illinois series is the seventh volume devoted to flowering plants (the eighth volume is devoted to ferns) and the second treating dicotyledons, which include such well-known plants as roses, peas, mustards, mints, nightshades, milkweeds, and asters. The previous volume on dicots, Flowering Plants: Hollies to Loasas, was published in 1978.
In the present volume, Mohlenbrock includes three orders of vascular plants encompassing five families. The orders are Salicales and Tamaricales, of the Salicaceae and Tamaricaceae families, and Capparidales, of the Capparidaceae, Resedaceae, and Brassicaceae families. In all, 44 genera and 117
species are treated in this volume, each species illustrated in detail.

In the present volume - the sixth of this series - 48 flowering plant families comprising a total of 712 genera are treated. They represent the newly designed eurosid orders Celastrales, Oxalidales and Rosales and the asterid orders Cornales and Ericales. The recognition of these ordinal concepts is the result of numerous recent gene sequence analyses which, for the first time in angiosperm systematics, have provided a reliable higher order classification. The concept of Ericales is largely expanded beyond its conventional limits to make it monophyletic and now includes parts of the erstwhile Ebenales, Lecythidales, Primulales and other orders. The revised circumscription of families such as Ericaceae, Celastraceae and Cunoniaceae owes much to the application of recent molecular studies, and for the same reason in the primulalean families, a complete remodeling of family limits is proposed.

The present volume, the fifth in this series, deals with three major groups of dicotyledons, the Capparales, Malvales, and Non-betalain Caryophyllales. The taxonomy of these groups, which comprise 40 families and 752 genera, is based on the results of the most recent research. This is especially true of the families Cruciferae and Malvaceae, to which more than two thirds of the genera treated in this volume belong. The integration of morphological information and the results of molecular studies have led to a revised classification and have opened the way to an understanding of character evolution in these strongly diversified groups.

They represent the asterid order Lamiales except for Acanthaceae (including Avicenniaceae), which will be included in a later volume. Although most of the constituent families of the order have been recognized as being closely related long ago, the inclusion of the families Byblidaceae, Carlemanniaceae and Plocospermataceae is the result mainly of recent molecular systematic research. Keys for the identification of all genera are provided, and likely phylogenetic relationships are discussed extensively. To facilitate the recognition of relationships, families are cross-referenced where necessary. The wealth of information contained in this volume makes it an indispensable source for anybody in the fields of pure and applied plant sciences.

A guide for the involved traveler.......2006-03-27
Most travel guides to Scotland include lots of photographs mixed with bumper sticker descriptions, limited amounts of travel hints, and listings for high-end accomodations. The Rough Guide to "Scottish Highlands & Islands" aims at a somewhat different audience, readers who have already decided to visit Scotland and want some honest and substantive travel narrative and practical details about more-affordable accomodation and travel.
This rough guide is dense with the kind of details one gets from the locals, and favors maps, graphics, and written description over photographs. The guide provides narrative oriented along the major travel routes with enough description to allow travelers to make their own choices about what might be worth visiting, and to avoid glitzy and typically overcrowded sites. A useful amount of historical detail is provided about a variety of points of interest without overwhelming or boring the reader. Information about hiking, biking, and other outdoor fun is enough to anticipate these activities while pointing the traveler to where to find additional information once on the ground in Scotland. Discussions about accomodation and food center on mid-range facilities and on inexpensive hostels and bunkhouses. The information about trains, planes, and automobiles should allow the traveler to figure out his or her own itinerary.
This book is highly recommend to travelors planning a vacation in the Scottish Highlands and Islands.

If you're the type of person that enjoys viewing American icons clad in their underwear, then this is your baby. General Grant is shown basically unclad and then the nimble-fingered among you can dress him in uniform, black suit or even tails. Fred Astaire would be so jealous!
Grant's family is also shown, as well as his much-hated son-in-law, Algie, his crabby father-in-law, Colonel Dent, and his mismatched parents, with whom Grant had strained, weird relationship. All of the dolls strongly resemble the actual people and this is a marked strength in the booklet. The clothes are also accurate and appealing. The front and back covers of the book contain a fairly accurate representation of Grant's life, with the fanciful inclusion that Gen. and Mrs. Grant actually had five children, one of whom was lost in infancy. This "lost child" has no pedigree and no mention is made of this mysterious babe in any of the existing Grant literature.
If you're a fan of Grant or a fan of paper dolls in general, this is a fine (and fun) book.

I picked this book up in a store and began flipping through it when a came across the title, "A Boy's First Turkey," by Ray Eye. I sat down and began to read his story and it stirred a feeling inside of me that really hit home. Mostly because of how close I am with my father, who introduced me to this sport that has become my life passion and also because through his story I could relived the excitement, fear, and pride that came along with my first turkey. This book is full of information for anyone who is serious about becoming the best tom chaser they can and it's written so well, you will lose yourself in it and you will feel like your hunkered down in the bush with each of these awesome hunter/writers. I hope they come out with a second edition of this book.

I have been hunting Eastern's for just three years and in those few years I have made many mistakes. In The TURKEY SEASON, you will learn from the best, not only what they did right but what they did wrong. The book covers Spring and Fall hunts. Birds from the North South, East and West. Gun or Bow, with decoys, dogs, solo or in teams. I subscribe to five hunting magazines annually as well as a member of NATF. This one book teaches more than all of those articles and years of reading combined.
Buy this one book. on't give it away after you are done reading it. Reread it often, before a hunt that involves a special circumstance. Deffinately after a hunt, if you messed up and made a mistake

Its contributors reflect varied class, religious, ethnic, racial, linguistic, sexual, and national backgrounds. Yet in one way or another they are all professional producers of testimonios—or life stories—whether as poets, oral historians, literary scholars, ethnographers, or psychologists. Through coalitional politics, these women have forged feminist political stances about generating knowledge through experience. Reclaiming testimonio as a tool for understanding the complexities of Latina identity, they compare how each made the journey to become credentialed creative thinkers and writers. Telling to Live unleashes the clarifying power of sharing these stories.
The complex and rich tapestry of narratives that comprises this book introduces us to an intergenerational group of Latina women who negotiate their place in U.S. society at the cusp of the twenty-first century. These are the stories of women who struggled to reach the echelons of higher education, often against great odds, and constructed relationships of sustenance and creativity along the way. Fabulous Book.......2007-01-19
Telling to Live fills the void by sharing the "testimonios" of the various Latina feminist writers in the book. The testimonios are poignant and at times hilarious.
I used this book in an upper division course and by and large the students liked the book. The Latina/o students were extremely fond of the book and it caused self-reflection on their part.
I own the book and have read it twice and know that I will continue to go back for the book for personal and acadmic reasons.

Telling To Live is an important book that will serve as both inspiration and information-source for years to come. While calls for a more diverse scholarship permeate academia, so few books are written from the viewpoint of Latinas. The use of the "testimonios" format is particularly compelling as the authors relate their personal experience to larger political issues such as empowerment, invisibility, the body. This thematic organization makes the book particularly well suited for use in the classroom.
