Book Description
Orchids are among the most popular and widely collected of plant families, with tropical species and hybrids being cultivated the world over for their remarkable flowers. The aim of Genera Orchidacearum is to produce a robust and natural classification of the orchids, something which has eluded plant scientists and orchid enthusiasts for years. The editors, who are all distinguished orchid specialists, will incorporate the wealth of new molecular data into a truly phylogenetic classification, and will identify the areas and taxa needing additional work. To this end, they will draw on the experience of several international contributors. Genera Orchidacearum will be published in a total of five volumes over five years, with each volume providing comprehensive coverage of one or two orchid subfamilies. The series as a whole will be an absolutely indispensable reference tool both for scientists, and orchid breeders, collectors, and enthusiasts. This, the first volume of the Genera Orchidacearum, begins with several general introductory chapters outlining the long history of the efforts of plant scientists and breeders to provide a scientific classification of the orchids. The book goes on to provide descriptions of each of the Apostasioideae and Cypripedioideae subfamilies which comprise around 150 species in seven genera. Very comprehensive descriptions are provided for each of the genera, including the complete nomenclature and type citation, distribution, anatomy, palynology, embryology, cytogenetics, ecology, phenology and pollination, phytochemistry, phylogenetics, cultivation, economic uses, taxonomic notes, and a select bibliography. The Cypripedioideae include the slipper orchids, arguably the most attractive and popular orchids of all, and this volume should have an especially wide appeal as a result. In addition, it is beautifully illustrated with many line drawings and colour photographs.
Book Description
A high-speed hop from London, Paris, Amsterdam, and Cologne, the city at Europe's crossroads is as distinguished, diverse, and distinctive as any continental capital. Home to the Surrealists and the Breughels, Brussels is a living monument to art nouveau, and it enjoys a gastronomic reputation second to nonecomplemented by boundless bar crawls and style-conscious shopping sprees. Written by local journalists, writers, and experts, the Time Out Brussels guide offers an informed and detailed excursion around the city and its attractions, from the Gothic and Guildhouse past of the Grand Place to Brussels' present-day role as Europe's capital, taking in its beers and its boutiques, its markets and its mussels, and its comics and its chocolates along the way. Beyond Brussels, the guide also delves deep into the three main cities of Flanders: fashion-conscious Antwerp, medieval Ghent, and Bruges, Belgium's biggest tourist draw. Day trips dip each side of the French-Flemish divide, from the coast around Ostend to Liege, nestling on the Dutch and German borders.

An exhaustive and unique guide to Brussels.......1999-12-16
Time Out Brussels provided a very comprehensive yet unique view of Brussels. The guide had just the right mix of the usual and the eclectic. The restaurant reviews were top notch, and the book's Survival section was indispensible.
In short, this guide provides everything you'll need to have a first-rate experience in Brussels at any budget.
Good if you're just going to Brussels........1998-02-24
The Brussels information is great, but the info on Antwerp, Ghent & Bruges is pretty minimal & doesn't contain any addresses (just phone numbers), so you'll need another book if you plan to travel around Belgium.

Book Description
Recorded history is a finely-woven magic fabric of intricate lies about events predating the sixteenth century. There is not a single piece of evidence that can be reliably and independently traced back earlier than the eleventh century. This book details events that are substantiated by hard facts and logic, and validated by new astronomical research and statistical analysis of ancient sources.

Calculations are only as good as your numbers.......2007-08-03
Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.
Pants on fire?.......2007-07-19
Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.
Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09
There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.
For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.
Very Interesting.......2007-03-07
It is a good proposal and I believe it will mature into something even better in the future. I think it deserves to be read.
History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10
Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.
I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.
Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.
Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.
I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.
This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.

Dog Heroes.......2007-03-24
I sat down and could not put this down until I finished reading. Anybody who loves animals (especially dogs) will love this. I cried at several of the dog stories.
Phenomenal job on an inspiring subject.......2007-02-22
Nona Kilgore Power signed her book at BookExpo America and bought some of the hero dogs along -- the animals and their handlers received well-deserved respect from people in the long autograph line.
The author has done a fine job collecting beautiful photos of the dogs and interviewing their handlers on what they did at Ground Zero, the Pentagon, Fresh Kills and in Shanksville, Pa. There is undeniable heartache in the fact that so few dogs found bodies let alone survivors. But the search was necessary and the fact that some search teams couldn't hide their disappointment just demonstrates that courage requires forging ahead even if the outlook is bleak.
Some of the notable stories here include that of Piper, a shepherd hero from New Jersey who helped find the bodies of 15 firefighters.
More often, the dogs' role was like that of golden retriever Bretagne (Brittany), from Texas. Her handler Denise Corliss relates in the book, "Sometimes she would leave my side and go sit next to a firefighter. Not just anyone ... she was very deliberate about whom she chose." Often she found a silent firefighter and joined him in a solemn moment.
Corliss remembered how unexpected the dogs' roles were. "One man especially stands out. He started petting Britanny and told me he didn't even like dogs. He knelt down beside her and told me his best friend was missing. His friend really loved dogs and would be very upset if he didn't pet this dog."
Other dogs consoled the families of victims at the Pentagon.
"Dog Heroes of September 11th" is certain to inspire more Americans to get involved in canine search and rescue and to help us remember those dogs, many of whom have retired or passed away in the past five years, who didn't hesitate, despite conditions infinitely worse than those they had seen in training, to search deep voids in hopes of finding people they could help.
Inspiring.......2007-02-12
If you're a fan of K9 helpers like me, you'll love this book. It was a great look at so many dogs, their trainers, and their stories. Truly great to see and read about all these dogs, their efforts make you feel warm inside :)

Book Description
This volume of proceedings from the Conference on Meiji Studies presents a rare multinational interchange among professors, researchers, and graduate students investigating Japan. The essays reflect both an appreciation of past scholarship and a determination to destabilize existing paradigms about Meiji Japan in favor of a multiplicity of perspectives that privilege subjectivity and non-elite groups. Attention to relations of power challenges the notions of modernization as the master narrative in Japan's recent history and of consensus as the primary characteristic of social interaction in Japan. The authors present an array of intellectual perspective on topics in the social sciences, humanities, and arts, employing a variety of theories and methodologies. The book will be welcomed by readers interested in the Meiji era, contemporary Japan, and postmodern theories of power.

Walking is good for you........2007-09-20
This cd is worth it's weight in gold. It has a great beat for anyone to walk to and is easy to follow. It gives encouragement and actually times the walk out. It's informative and most of all...not boring. The second half of the cd give you something to work towards. It's a great cd.
Elevator music with a beat.......2007-03-11
I need a more pronounced beat in my walking, and music that's easier to listen to, or at least doesn't make me feel like I'm in the elevator going up to see the cardiologist instead of trying to postpone the visit for a few years.
Healthy Heart Walking CD.......2007-02-20
A very well thought out CD. I feel as if there is a coach with me every step of the way.
Sometimes basic is best...........2006-04-22
I have many walking tapes, but sometimes I just want the encouragement without all the blather. This CD set a very nice pace, and I found Rita "speaking up" periodically helped to keep me focus when I started to drift off. One advantage to this over my iPod playlist is sometimes the music beat is too fast, and I'll get so caught up in the increased tempo that I risk straining something. I bought 2 more copies for family members.
The Healthy Heart Walking CD.......2006-02-25
This was a waste of money. I wish I could exchange it for a more effective CD.

The collision of Cuban dreams with sometimes harsh American realities has been Oscar Hijuelos's great theme, most notably in Mambo Kings Play Songs of Love. Certainly it's at the heart of his fifth novel, Empress of the Splendid Season, which chronicles the trials, tribulations, and infrequent triumphs of a Cuban American clan over the course of a half century. The protagonist, Lydia Espana, has grown up in pre-Castro Cuba, the pampered daughter of a prosperous businessman. But when she has the audacity to violate her father's small-town code of conduct--by sleeping with an itinerant musician--she pays a terrible penalty: "Her family, turning unfairly against her with a nearly Biblical wrath, had banished her, unprepared to contend with an indifferent world."
Where is Lydia banished to? New York, of course. And in this most indifferent of cities, the former "queen of the Congo line" finds herself in a less exalted role: that of a cleaning woman. This demotion she accepts with a very credible mixture of resignation and rock-ribbed realism: "The hardest part of being a cleaning woman had to do with the way people looked at her; often as if she were 'nothing.' It hurt her most when men did not notice her. The nature of the work itself, the outfit, the end-of-the-day fatigue, the messiness of that labor were not glamorous, so what could she expect." Lydia is less sanguine about her family's difficulties, from her husband Raul's near-fatal heart attack to her son's brushes with the law. Empress of the Splendid Season is in fact an ensemble piece that passes the point of view from character to character, from generation to generation. But it's Lydia's sensibility--at once stoic and sensuous--that ultimately enlivens this latest take on the American (or perhaps Cuban American) Dream. --William Davies
Amazon.com Audiobook Review
Oscar Hijuelos, Pulitzer Prize-winning author of The Mambo Kings Play Songs of Love, returns with this look at Harlem life in the mid-20th century. His story revolves around the trials and tribulations of Lydia España, a "wonder of affection, crankiness, strength, and gentility." Lydia's eternal belief that she is somehow special carries her through her life's changes, from pampered daughter of a wealthy Cuban family to struggling immigrant seamstress to widowed cleaning lady in Harlem. Rita Moreno reads this abridgment with considerable aplomb, her remarkable range of accents and emotions conveying all the novel's passion. (Running time: 6 hours, 4 cassettes) --C.B. Delaney
Book Description
Through four novels in the last decade, Oscar Hijuelos has produced a body of work that is without rival in contemporary literature, both in the lush, incantatory rhythms of his extraordinary prose and in his profound and heartfelt vision.
In this transcendent new story, Hijuelos tells the story of Lydia Espana, a beautiful and formerly prosperous emigre of pre-Castro Cuba, who becomes a cleaning lady in New York. Once the spoiled, pampered daughter of a small-town mayor and adored by men'a queen of the Conga line - she is forced because of a youthful sexual indiscretion to leave home and, in 1947 finds herself suddenly living the life of the working poor. In time she falls in love with Raul, a humble waiter. One night in a Manhattan ballroom, in the middle of a bolero, Raul proposes marriage, for Lydia is his empress of the most beautiful and splendid season, which is love.
A life of promise is disrupted when Raul falls ill and Lydia, finding employment as a domestic, becomes the head of the family. Striving to educate her two children, Rico and Alicia, in the style of the upper class, she must endure a lesson in humility, cleaning the homes of New Yorkers much better off than herself.
Among her employers is Mr. Osprey, a reserved and kindly lawyer, who eventually takes an interest in her family's well-being and, during the turmoil of the 1960s, intervenes at a critical juncture in the life of her teenage son, Rico. Throughout, Lydia remains a sensuous and powerful woman who meets the trials of a lonely life with humor and a gleam of triumph in her eye'a sense that she is someone special'an empress of fortitude, of dignity.
Hijuelos' genius for evoking the heart and soul of his characters has never been more vivid, moving, and impassioned than in Empress of the Splendid Season. A master of eloquent detail, Hijuelos allows Lydia to open up, alive and vibrant on the page. No one writes better of love or the pulse of the city. And no one has better captured the complexity of what happens to generations of people who come to America: how assimilation is at once the achievement of dreams and a loss of what has rooted us to the past.
Customer Reviews:
Great storytelling... about the memories of Cuba.......2005-11-04
I really enjoyed the way this author painted a picture of a society girl from the good old days in Cuba who ends up in New York as a cleaning lady. I loved the way she was always such a lady and was always soo concerned with what the neighbors were going to say and that the most important thing was to carry oneself as if they were a person of class.
The ending did not do it for me, we end up with Lydia draaming of something totally irrelovent. Even her bosses ending was so blah. I did enjoy it however and am looking forward to reading this authors other books!
A splendid look into Latin American life.......2004-04-07
Hijuelos has a way with his words that makes this book easy to read and enjoy.
The story is interesting and captivating. I really enjoyed his portrayal of Latin Americans.
Living an examined life........2003-03-20
Oscar Hijuelos writes of people with intense rich interior lives. These are people we admire for their emotional constancy and pity for their obsessions. I've read three of Oscar Hijuelos' novels. This is the least engaging of the three, but still a very nice book.
Hijuelos goes on auto-pilot.......2002-02-20
Not that this isn't a good novel. But with its Cuban immigrants in New York, great writing and not much of a plot, this is a book that the author's already written a couple times before.
Intelligent and compassionate.......2001-08-15
This is a novel that could be turned into a dramatic and engaging movie along the lines of "Mambo Kings." Nothing happens in this or other Hijeulos novels of great magnitude beyond the small circles of characters they embrace. But that's what makes this book great. He does a good job of transporting the reader into the lives of nobody important but who are filled with great dreams and aspirations. And there's enough intelligence and political and social commentary to elevate it beyond the typical hack drama and movie of the week dribble that books like this often are. It won't change the world, but it's an engaging and enjoyable read.

Pretty Good.......1999-04-29
A grotesque human triangle in a primitive Southern town...A young boy learning the difficult lessions of manhood...A fateful encounter with his native land and former love...These are [arts of the world of Carson McCullers - a world of the lost, the injured, the eternal strangers at life's feast. Here are brilliant revelations of love and longing, bitter heartbreak and occasional happiness - tales that probe the very heart of our lives. It was a good story. she was not a very good person - nor was he. He a sponge who only cared about himself and she was a niggerdly woman, although the town really needed her.
