A great supplementary guide for history buffs.......2001-07-17

We visited England last year, and the Michelin Green guide was very helpful in planning a terrific trip. I don't think I would recommend it as the primary guide; it lacks information on restaurants and accomodation, and, as another reviewer noted, the alphabetical layout makes it hard to choose which general regions you would like to visit. To supplement another book though (we used the Rough Guide),it can be very helpful. The real strength, we found, was in pointing out historic points of interest. It gave a great deal of information about places that the other guide books only provide sketchy information on.

As usual, the Michelin Green Guide was very good. The detailed descriptions were accurate and helpful. Next time I would get the guide for the specific regions for even more detail. The only complaint I can think of is that I would prefer a locational organization as opposed to an alphabetical one.

Excellent But Somewhat Dated.......2005-05-13

The book is generally very good, but remember it, like the US auto club tour books, is geared toward the motorist. There is precious little information about rail travel, etc., except for getting around Vienna. Unfortunately it was just published before the Euro became Austria's only currency and all prices, etc. are still denominated in Schillings. The index could also be more comprehensive. Otherwise the book is excellent, and very detailed and I recommend it.

Great Guide, but One Major Drawback.......2000-06-07

I particularly like the Michelin green series of guide books because they supply an appropriate amount of information about the major sights in each city, and because they also make note of many interesting sights that are less well-known. This guide to Amsterdam is no exception, and the material covered is clearly presented and interesting. The introductory pages are also very well done --- they give just enough historical information, and they provide some nifty extras like an illustrated section on the different gable styles to be seen in Amsterdam. In spite of all this information, the guide is light enough to carry around easily too. However, the index proves to be a MAJOR drawback to this guide, which is organized not alphabetically by sights, but by districts and neighborhoods. This way of organizing the material makes sense, since you can see all the sights in one area of town at once. The problem is that there is no cross-referencing in the index. This means that if you are wandering around and you come across, say, the Koninklijk Paleis and want to read something about it, you cannot look it up since it is not listed in the index. Unless you happen to know that you are presently at the "Dam," the main area of town under which it is listed, you will not be able to locate the information. On our trip to Amsterdam, this feature drove me crazy more times than I can count, since I often wasn't sure which topic heading a particular church or museum was under. If you can deal with that great irritation, the guide is otherwise wonderful.

Michelin Green Guides were the first guide books to be published about specific regions in France. They still are (for how much time?)useful for people who cannot spend too much time in Bourgogne or Jura. Michelin Green Guide is still valuable. Especially when you visit Burgundy and Jura. Both famous areas for gourmets from all over the world. Because Michelin forged its reputation on restaurants, it is wise to use both Michelin Red Guide 2000 Edition for France and the local green guide for Burgundy and Jura. Those who plan a visit to Switzerland should also buy it. Jura is the other side of the Leman Lake. By the way, some of the most beautiful Alpes and Mont-Blanc landscapes can be viewed from the Jura slopes above Geneva. Because they are concise; because they have explicit propositions Michelin are always to recommend to the one-day or two-days visitor.

Ernest A. Choate's Dictionary of American Bird Names is a monument. It stands alone. There is nothing like it. It is indispensible for birders who wish to understand, and not merely know, the names and classes of birds. The dictionary offers etymological origins of every name as well as Latin and scientific counterparts. The book is ornamented with Thomas Bewick woodcuts. The jacket notes call the text "picturesque and richly anecdotal" and this is both true and understatement. Choate's dictionary has wit and authority in its linguistic details and in its fieldwork. The author is both a scholar and a birder and has managed to include mythic, historical, and common origins. Thus the book is not only a history of the names of American birds; it is a history of America. Included are a biographical appendix, a bibliography, and an English/Latin glossary. The book is sized to fit a pocket or backpack, and has been updated to reflect the changes made on the 1983 AOU Check-list. Peterson said "no informed birder should be without " this book. The truth is, rather, that no birder can be informed without it, and best of all, it is affordable, transportable, and a joy to read.

A good portrayal of the man who taught Ganas.......2004-04-30

I had heard that Stand and Deliver was a good movie and so I borrowed it from my public library. I wanted to know the truth about Jaime Escalante, the truth behind the movie. I happened to see this book one day and just started reading it. It took me less than an hour to read, but the well-written book taught me much about Escalante, the sensational and resourceful teacher. This is not only the Stand and Deliver story-- the story about how he made 18 high school students pass the A.P. Calculus exam, but the things that led to it and the aftermath.

This book is a short read, but it is inspiring and especially good if you want to know the story behind Stand and Deliver, the movie about Jaime Escalante as a teacher.

Entertaining and Inspirational.......2000-09-24

This lively and engaging biography makes good use of quotations and information gained through personal interviews with Escalante. Reading this book makes me feel that I have spent time in Escalante's company. I would not want teachers to mimic his style, but I would like them all to share his determination to succeed.
