Book Description
Since publication of the first edition in 1989, great strides have been made in several areas of lectin research. Numerous lectins have been isolated from a variety of sources, and their functions in infection, inflammation and immunity, both innate and acquired, have been clarified. In addition, the three-dimensional structures of close to 200 lectins, and of many of their complexes with carbohydrates have been elucidated, providing an insight into the molecular basis of their specificity. As a result, this book is about 470 pages long (three times the size of the first edition), with over 200 figures and some 30 tables.
The book starts with an overview of lectin research followed by a survey of the occurrence of lectins in nature and a detailed description of their properties, with emphasis on specificity, structure and interaction with ligands at the atomic level. The biosynthesis and genetics of lectins are then discussed, as are their numerous applications in biology and medicine. A summary of the nutritional effects of lectins follows, and finally their functions in nature are dealt with.

This handbook consists of two major sections: an introductory guide and a quick reference dictionary. Part I acquaints the newcomer to the lectin field with the essential information on lectins and their importance to biomedicine:

- effects on nutrition and immunology
- use in histochemistry
- application as therapeutic agents
Part II lists approximately 200 lectin entries in alphabetical order. Each entry deals with the lectin(s) of a particular plant and provides, (where known), details of:
- isolation and characterisation;
- sugar binding specificity;
- biological activities;
- applications;
- commercial availability; and,
- a bibliography.
Useful summary tables list lectins according to their specificity, thereby allowing the user to choose the best lectin for their application. A list of suppliers is also provided. Handbook of Plant Lectins will be of interest to biologists and biomedical researchers studying cell biology, cancer research, nutrition, immunology, pathology and physiology.

After a chemically orientated first chapter dealing with specificity and a second chapter on structure, in the rest of the book lectins are looked at from a biological point of view. Their involvement in metabolism and biosynthesis, the distribution and localization in plant tissues and their role in interactions with the outside world are discussed in chapters 3 and 4. The last two chapters deal with the effects of lectins on various cells of the body including blood, gut, and nerve cells with particular emphasis on medical, nutritional, and general biological aspects.

More than just a dry, step-one-step-two, how-to book........1999-05-19
Featuring interesting historical information, this book includes many backgrounds of formal gardens and topiary, offered as sidebars and archive drawings. There is extensive information on creating forms and shaping topiary. The illustrator's drawings echo the whimical sentiment of topiary, while the authors' offering of botanical information help the hobbyist understand the science of what they are doing. I cannot imagine anyone reading this book and not bursting with ideas to make their own gardens come to life.
A Satisfactory Introduction to Topiary.......1998-08-27
Before reading this book I had no experience with topiary. After reading this book I felt like I knew a little. I found that the text focuses on the history of the use of topiary. There were some sections on what plants to use and there was a LONG section on creating different wire forms. The illustrations are all hand drawn while I would have prefered to see actual pictures of the plants. This book is probably better for someone who knows a little about gardening basics instead of someone like me who knows nothing.
I was disapointed to say the least.......1998-01-27
As difficult as it is to find information on the art of topiary, this disapointing book gives a very vague picture. Perhaps the most frustrating thing about the book is the illustrations. It seems more like a comic strip than an information resource. For instance the 3 or 4 pages given to standards shows hand drawn renderings that look like my 5 year old drew them. It is interesting that they devoted so many pages to different types of wire shapes. It seems obvious to me that vines will grow on a rack shaped like a bird, and they will grow on a rack shaped like an elephant. I just didn't "get" showing us all the different shapes, and giving them all their own page. Good book for the novice, check it out at the library however, there isn't much reason to own it.

Very Good Reference Material.......2006-12-04
I'm a landscape contractor and have a lot of material available to me and have somewhat of a small library of encyclopedias, reference how-to books, etc. Ordered this book not knowing if I would get just another repeat of what I already have. This is one book I will return to quite often. Towards the front of the book will outline how the book works. The index in back is alphabetized with Latin nomenclature. Some common names are included too. If you want to look up Maples, you will find it under Maple, but will refer you to Acer and page #. Each genus entry gives you some info about the species over all and some 'cultivation'. Then gives you more specifics about each species/ variety alphabetically. First the Latin name then common name. Then includes range, size of the tree or shrub, characteristics, subspecies info, and zone tolerance ranges. There are a lot of very good photos that accompany each entry as well. Now, this is not 'Complete' in that it lists every tree/ shrub out there. That's unrealistic in any volume. But it is a very outstanding and 'Complete' in what it does cover - and it covers alot. I would recommend this encyclopedia be included in your library of reference material.

i have found this bood to be an excellent resource for all types of trees and shrubs. it has both common and scientific plant names and is loaded with pictures and comprehensive descriptions. the cultivation tips have been very useful and i would highly recommend this book to anyone!

The book has great pictures and covers any plant you could ever think of but is lacking in its content. Do the math, 8,500 trees and shrubs covered in 815 pages. That does not leave much room for a complete description. It is a very attractive book to look at, but is not for the serious landscaper or nurserymen.

The Covenant in Judaism and Paul deals with biblical and intertestamental uses of covenant and related rituals, challenging the view that baptism replaces circumcision, since baptism is entry into the new covenant, and showing that ritual boundaries are replaced or redefined since identity has changed. The investigation uses social categories, "identity" as a term that offers an explanation for a group's selfunderstanding and "boundary" as a term for entry rite of affirmation marker. Part A looks at the Old Testament background to aspects of the covenant. Part B examines covenant identity and rituals in Palestinian Judaism as featured in Jubilees, the Temple Scroll, the Damascus Document, and the Community Rule. It includes a brief analysis of the baptism administered by John the Baptist. Part C analyses Paul's views on covenant, circumcision, and baptism against this background.

Good Things to Think About, But Don't Trust Tinker.......2007-03-22
The good thing about Missionary Conquest is that it forces you to reconsider assumptions about the role of missionaries to indigenous cultures. That's good. There isn't much else to recommend this book to you, because Tinker is not trustworthy. At the beginning of the book, Tinker states that when examining the primary source material, he will rewrite the Indian side of the encounter without even telling you. That should have been a giant red flag, but I gave him the benefit of the doubt. After all, maybe he is right, and that the primary sources misunderstood or even misstated the Native American side of exchanges. However, it turns out that he felt free to rewrite what the white people did, too!
I actually bothered to look up one of his sources on De Smet. In fact, it was one of his clenching arguments for his thesis on De Smet. And, it turns out, Tinker completely rewrote the white side of the exchange as well, so much so that Tinker essentially wrote nearly the exact opposite of what happened. You can view the book "History of Early Steamboat Navigation on the Missouri River" online at Google books yourself if you don't believe me. Pages 196-198 are the relevant pages.
Sadly, I don't have time to look up all his sources, but needless to say that when your primary argument against someone relies on completely mangling the primary source, what does that say about the book as a whole, especially when he admits to completely rewriting the Native American side of nearly every exchange?
So, if your goal is to get another perspective on the role of missionaries to indigenous cultures, then sure, read the book. If your goal is to find an objective account of what happened in this period, then this book is certainly NOT the book to use. Due to the rewriting of primary sources I don't consider it scholarship as much as propoganda.
Also, if you want a good, positive book on a missionary who respects indigenous culture, I recommend Bruchko.
Great book on rough topic.......2005-07-15
I took a class from Dr. Tinker on American Indian religion in which we used this book. It is a very compact but comprehensive study of five American mission situations, from Spanish California to Puritan New England to American Midwest. It shows just what the missionary project was in relation to Indian peoples, which can be and has been shown in other world areas as well (for instance, the Comaroffs on colonialism and missionaries in Africa). This will be an unpleasant read for people who are unfamiliar with the history of white/Indian contact or with the history of missionaries. I know that many people--Christians mostly--see missionaries as good and helpful people, and no doubt many are. However, the missionary project as such is ethnocentric and hegemonic, and in the days when missionaries had more power to compel their beliefs and practices on other societies, they used all of it. The only thing that restrains them today is a lack of power and a surplus of world attention.

I am not sure why, as an historian, I am constantly surprised at the kinds of things that are done by well-intentioned people in the name of God. Crusades, Inquisitions, church/state sanctioned pogroms and purges - Catholic, Protestant or Orthodox, every variety of Christianity has had a share of the difficult past. It is a missing part of the general vision of American history that religion played a part in the wide-spread destruction of Native American populations. History is often recounted with a decidedly pro-Protestant slant; the Catholic explorers of Spain and Portugal are seen as zealously converting the Native American populations while stealing their lands and gold, but the early Protestant settlers are seen more often in Thanksgiving-style cooperation efforts, where Native Americans and Pilgrims sit down at the same table sharing meals. After the colonial days, in the expansion of the United States westward, the genocide of the Native Americans is given a more political/military slant, with religion as a minor issue, if included at all.
George Tinker, himself a member of the Osage/Cherokee people, is on faculty at Iliff School of Theology in Denver, bringing a Native American perspective to the predominantly European-American institution. His biases are clear and upfront even from the preface of the book - he speaks of the 'general history of the European invasion and occupation of what today is known as North America', not a dispassionate and objective statement at all, but one designed to challenge the classical interpretations of American history as one where the settlement of the continent was 'manifest destiny', somehow ordained and sanctioned by God. Whether the conquest was seen as being done by invasion or conversion, the results were generally the same. Tinker states that 'perhaps the most fearful aspect of the church's complicity in the conquest of the native peoples in the latter sense is that it always happened with the best of intentions.'
Tinker highlights four main missionaries in this text - John Eliot, Junipero Serra, Pierre-Jean De Smet, and Henry Benjamin Whipple. In the overall history of missionary activity, these men are seen as being faithful and successful ministers who spread the gospel message to those who had not yet received the Word of God. However, their effects were dire for the communities they contacted, even as they often meant only the best for the people to whom they traveled and preached.
Even as they were trying to spread the gospel message and do good works among the Native American peoples, these missionaries were participants in their wider culture's ambitions against the indigenous peoples. Convinced both of the moral/religious superiority of their own faith over the locals, and the societal superiority of European-based culture over the tribal cultures, they saw no ethical problems with dealing with the peoples in ways that were ultimately destructive of their cultures. Tinker goes into detail about the efforts of these missionaries - he looks at the issues of Native American genocide from social, political, economic and religious angles, as well as occasionally from other standpoints with each of the four missionaries.
John Eliot, part of the New England Puritan establishment, was a typical colonial in many ways, seeing Native American culture as inadequate, possibly even evil. Junipero Serra's missions were in symbiotic relationship with the oppressive Spanish hierarchy; while Serra might have argued against cruel treatment by military, governmental and explorer authorities, he did not question the overall task of Christianising the native peoples and reducing the influence of their native cultures. Pierre-Jean De Smet is another Roman Catholic, a Jesuit who saw such superiority in his rational, Catholic theology that he thought nothing of imitating in mocking fashion the rituals and practices of the natives. Henry Benjamin Whipple, the first Episcopal bishop of Minnesota, was instrumental in depriving the Native Americans in the northern plains territories and states of lands in the hopes that they would settle to a more acceptable agrarian lifestyle akin to the European model.
Tinker looks at these times in detail, but they are depressingly similar. Lack of awareness of the value of communities as well as individuals, and lack of understanding the consequences meant that missionaries kept repeating the same, over and over. The Native Americans are now in a post-colonial frame of mind socially, politically, economically and psychologically, and it is perhaps this last element, together with religious expression, that is most crucial to the recovery of the Native American peoples as their own communities. The confusion of the gospel message with European cultural values became ingrained in the Native American thinking, and Tinker charges the people not to become complicit or participate in their own oppression.
While he does not reference him directly, there are parallels between Tinker's analysis and that of Edward Said's studies of post-colonial cultures and mindsets. Tinker never doubts the devotion and well-meaning intentions of these missionaries, even as he lays bare the awful consequences of their actions. This is an important and fascinating history for all Americans to read, showing the ways that we participate in oppression and injustice are so insidious and pervasive that we can be completely unaware even as we strive to work for the betterment of all.
Radically Changes Our Understanding.......2000-03-07
Tinker's work is quite effective in exposing the ego-driven selfishness involved in the missionary exploits of Christianity's "main heroic missionaries." The common understanding has been that "they meant well, but were a product of their time." Tinker's keen research into the primary texts of these very missionaries (using their own letters, journals, first hand accounts) exposes the truth: that these missionaries reaped personal gain from the policies of colonial genocide. There are those who would discount Tinker's words and research as hysteria, but in light of Tinkers voluminous citations in the Notes section, it is clear that Tinker has the truth on his side. Also, I appreciated his attention to the existence of "New Age" practices as a not-so-subtle form of neo-colonialism. Wonderful effective piece of research and recovery of the true history of missionary colonialism.
The only one around!!.......1999-04-16
I used this book in my senior thesis paper on Plateau Indian Culture and Presbyterian Missions in the 1830-40's. It did not only help me with understanding impacts of missionary work, but was written in a way that opened my eyes to deep thoughts of humanity, religion, selfishness and ethnocentricity. It is an eye-opener and a gift to any scholar's mind!!! READ IT!

Recovering lost voices and exploring issues intimate and institutional, this sweeping examination of Spanish California illuminates Indian struggles against a confining colonial order and amidst harrowing depopulation. To capture the enormous challenges Indians confronted, Steven W. Hackel integrates textual and quantitative sources and weaves together analyses of disease and depopulation, marriage and sexuality, crime and punishment, and religious, economic, and political change.
As colonization reduced their numbers and remade California, Indians congregated in missions, where they forged communities under Franciscan oversight. Yet missions proved disastrously unhealthful and coercive, as Franciscans sought control over Indians' beliefs and instituted unfamiliar systems of labor and punishment. Even so, remnants of Indian groups still survived when Mexican officials ended Franciscan rule in the 1830s. Many regained land and found strength in ancestral cultures that predated the Spaniards' arrival.
At this study's heart are the dynamic interactions in and around Mission San Carlos Borromeo between Monterey region Indians (the Children of Coyote) and Spanish missionaries, soldiers, and settlers. Hackel places these local developments in the context of the California mission system and draws comparisons between California and other areas of the Spanish Borderlands and colonial America. Concentrating on the experiences of the Costanoan and Esselen peoples during the colonial period, Children of Coyote concludes with an epilogue that carries the story of their survival to the present day.

The Struggles of Junipero Serra.......2002-12-31
This is the second of Englebert's books that I have read, and I can give this one an unqualified favorable review. Blessed Junipero Serra has, of late, been unfairly branded with mistreatment of the natives that he sought to convert.
Englebert, however, puts this theory to bed without having the intention of doing so. Published in 1956, this book does not have for its thesis a studied defense of Junipero Serra. The attacks to Serra's character are of recent invention.
Yet, Englebert does demonstrate that Junipero Serra deeply loved the natives he sought to bring to the Christian faith. In fact, he was stubborn in his defense of the faults of natives, quick to forgive sins (including the murder of a fellow missionary) and quick to anger the local Spanish Governor by interposing himself between Spanish soldiers and the natives. Englebert depicts Serra as a most strident defender of the natives against abuses (i.e., rapine, murder) by the Spanish soldiers.
In short, the lively pace of the book and the gripping detail of an incredible journey make this a very fast read. A large part of the book is made up of Serra's constant battles with the Governor, and his later successors, to encourage the success of the missions, to keep the native converts within the jurisdiction of the Church so as to protect them against abuse, and to ensure the continued success of missionary activity. Through all of this a portrait of the man himself is made more clear.
Englebert quotes quite liberally from Serra's journals and the journals of his contemporaries, including those who were opposed to him. To that end, this may be one of the few books found in the English language that liberally quotes source materials for the non-Spanish speaking reader. Thanks to Englebert for this great work of history.

Fascinating insight into the foundation of modern California.......2004-07-03
San Francisco, Santa Clara, San Jose, Santa Barbara, Los Angeles, San Diego - some of the string of pearls along the length of California.
The book uncovers the work of those few hardy souls who founded those communities in the seventeen-hundreds. Their development model was radically different from the US mainstream: that the land belonged to the Native Americans, and that the missions were to mentor those who volunteered in their transition from the hunter-gatherer/horticulturalist to the agriculturalist strategy.
Already then we see the clash between Serra and the naive Europeans who wanted to rush to impose a European-model urban-based governance system, regardless of the vulnerability of Native-American culture to urban European abuses, and how he held them off for a generation.
And we also see the human dimension: how every great person is in the end a bundle of strengths and weaknesses, and how a person that felt ordinary in himself performs historic achievements. This account is both humbling and empowering.
A clear and fascinating account of Junipero Serra, key person in one of the greatest and most influential states of today's world.
