Lichens are prominent examples of symbiotic organisms, combining fungi and algae and/or cyanobacteria in an intimate biological union. This volume provides an up-to-date account of these fascinating organisms, beginning with anatomical, morphological, and physiological aspects. It emphasizes the ecophysiology of lichens and their role in carbon and nitrogen fixation, as well as in mineral cycling in general. It then provides an overview of lichen biogeography and systematics in the light of modern perspectives in evolution, and summarizes the chemistry of the unique secondary metabolites produced by lichens.

I agree with the other two reviewers: if you have no experience with the life sciences it would be best to begin with a book like W. Pervis's Lichens. However, Nash's Lichen Biology is an outstanding text for more detailed and advanced questions on the interworkings of these unique organisms/ecosystems. Each chapter is authored by experts in smaller aspects of lichenology (chemistry, anatomy, taxonomy, ecology etc.), making the complete work very well-rounded.
Excellent introduction for serious students of botany.......1999-10-28
This book is not light reading. It is, however, the best book currently available for a complete introduction to the biology of lichens. Topics range from morphology and physiology to ecology. It would benefit from diagrams to accompany the many photographs.
Very Technical--Not a book for the amateur!.......1998-07-13
Good B&W photos, more info on lichens than you'll find anywhere but nearly impossible to read and understand if you are not a bontanist.

As an intricate association between a fungus and one or more green algae or cyanobacteria, lichens are one of the most successful examples of symbiosis. These fascinating organisms survive extreme desiccation and temperatures. They are adapted to a great variety of habitats, from deserts to intertidal zones, from tropical rain forests to the peaks of the Himalayas and to circumpolar ecosystems. Lichens are extremely efficient accumulators of atmospherically deposited pollutants, and are therefore widely used to monitor environmental pollution. Their wide range of secondary products show pharmaceutically interesting fungicidal, antibacterial and antiviral properties. Lichens are extremely difficult to culture. This manual provides well-tested tissue culture protocols, protocols for studying lichen ultrastructure, (eco)physiology, primary and secondary compounds, and for using lichens as bioindicators.

Have to buy a different guide because this one is so bad.......2005-08-19
I liked the look of this one in the shop and at a first glance it looked like it would have all the info we needed for our cruise on our sailboat through the Bahamas. We found that some topics were ridculously written about, e.g. Gulf Stream Crossing. We agree that this is an important mention but the advice was completely a no brainer. Real advice like, what to do if your'e caught in a norther in the Gulf Stream might have been useful. We also found the author to be non-chalant when talking about passages and channels. We had a terrible experience because of this, read the North West Channel LIght - we encountered 10 foot chop there! Also, the Whale Cay info is not highlighted enough. This is an extremely dangerous area that you MUST study and know before crossing here. We found much of the info for the islands innaccurate. A complete waste of money! We are now looking to purchase the Yachtsma's Guide instead.
bahamas cruising guide.......2003-10-11
I belive this book to be the most imformative book.well written.great photos.
Professial Presentation But Dangerous Information.......2000-08-02
I used this book from April to June 2000 cruising the Bahamas on our way to Panama via the Windward Passage.I found if the wind blew from the east then the book did not give information on other anchorages that one could change to E.G. White Cay Berri Islands and Stanley Cay in the Exums.In other instances the best anchorages were not even mentioned by Wilson. The books G.P.S. waypoints were dangerous wrong E.G.George Town .The lack of information on entrances from the sound to the banks E.G. The entrance to Thunder Ball Cave area .It is my belief that this book is dangerous and it is best to find another guide book.
Looks good but disappointing in use.......2000-06-14
During a cruise through the Bahamas in the spring of 2000, this guide was a great disappointment. The BA charts are woefully lacking in detail -- especially depths -- and discussions of shore sites are in many cases unduly negative. We visited a number of places about which Mr. Wilson used disparaging terms and found them delightful. Coverage of the Exumas assumes one is approaching from the banks side and gives little attention to approaches from Exuma Sound. In some places the author gets on a soapbox for environmental concerns and in other places he tacitly approves practices (such as feeding fish at snorkel sites) that are not ecologically sound. Fails to acknowledge existence of the Explorer series of charts that are by far the best for practical use in the area. In general, the "yellow pages" info is current and useful, but all things considered, there are better cruising guides for the Bahamas.

I have several Bahamas cruising guides and this is the BEST ! I live in the Bahamas and have found things here I did not know. It is accurate, easy to read,and well written. I highly reccomend this book to anybody that is interested in cruising the Bahamas or even those interested in the Bahamas at all. A REALLY GOOD BOOK ! Head and shoulders above the rest of the Bahamian cruising guides!

Godd positive training guide.......2007-08-31
We've gone to positive dog obedience classes with our newfs and rescues, and subscribe to Whole Dog Journal. So, no, there are no earthshaking new discoveries here. I mean - sit, stay, come... It's just a very solid, well thought out, written, and illustrated plan for how to go about positive training. And positive training gives you a happy, loving, well-meaning dog! I've used the book for reinforcement of the classes we took, to check that I'm giving the messages I want to give to our new puppy. And I just sent a copy to a friend who drove 5 hours to rescue a standard poodle. I think it will be very helpful!

From the author: Self-assessed training needs, increasingly used in designing, delivering, and targeting training, can be systematically affected by factors other than actual need. Using a sample of public sector employees, this research investigated the influence of career stage on perceptions of managerial support, training self-efficacy, utility and self-reported training needs. Those in later career stages reported lower training self-efficacy, lower training utility, and less need for management training. Implications for organizations and this growing segment of the work force are discussed.

The nine photographers featured here are so different that this edition of Aperture is a joy to look through. I really treasure this and as an amateur photographer, it inspires me to do better with my new hobby. I highly recommend this to anyone who can still find it.
