      Book Description

1918. In the course of his work, the writer comes in contact with a large number of people who are interested in botany as a recreation and a change from their regular work. It is noteworthy with such students that interest in a plant is considerably quickened when it can be shown that the plant in question possesses either medicinal or poisonous properties. In answer to this need, the writer compiled this book which imparts useful information and at the same time emphasizes the paramount importance of scientific training.

              1 out of 5 stars Useless!.......2007-07-10

This book is absolutely useless. I think it must have been self-published -- there are so many typos and grammatical errors. He mentions one guide by name at least twice, giving every piece of information needed to contact him, and reminding you that London is ahead of the U.S. in case you want to call the guide directly. Who is this guide -- his uncle or something? Do not waste your money on this book.

5 out of 5 stars nice little book!!.......2007-04-04

this is a nice little book! it's a great cut and dry, no frills guide for first timers. i have yet to go and test it out but i'll let you know as soon as i do. it gives you the tube station for most of the top attactions and other little hints and ideas too. from combating jet lag to how to get into the invite only ceremony of the keys at the tower of london. there's no pictures or maps so you need another guide book for that (i got the eyewitness guide to london which it wonderful in itself). this book is a couple of years old and i was leery of that but the infomation was worth it.

5 out of 5 stars Great book made my trip more enjoyable.......2004-06-14

I have just returned from London. Thank goodness I purchased Wheeler's London guidebook. His tips on what to do before I left home, how to get from the airport and find places in London were invaluable. It was like having a well-traveled uncle giving me advice. I was particularly enjoyed his tips on afternoon tea. First time, or many time visitors to London will love this book.

I often travel Asia but this is my first time to visit Europe, this book is great!!

Thomas Bruce Wheeler's London Secrets is a concise insiders view of a very large, potentially confusing city. It contains

              Book Description

Antarctica is the coldest, most alien place on Earth. The only animals that can survive there are penguins, seals, seabirds and whales, and the only humans to be found are visiting research scientists. Through letters to her godson, Daniel, and her own photographs, Sara Wheeler tells the story of her experiences at the bottom of the world.

Travel writer Sara Wheeler spent seven months in Antarctica. She is the author of the best selling Terra Incognita, a book about her experiences on the ice.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful, Entertaining Book! .......2005-02-19

This book gave Anarctica the personal touch. While most factual books leave a reader with an unreal sense of detachment, this book personalizes and brings us closer to the experience a traveler would have if they visited Antarctica. I loved the account of our author being visited by Emperor penguins and how she described the different kinds of ice to be found there. I was able to get a clearer picture of the place and identify what travel must be like there. I've heard of skidoos and some modes of travel before, now I have some sense of how it feels to use them. The photgraphs enhance the author's account and I am glad to be able to share this book with my students. I learned more about Antarctica from this book and am willing to believe they will too.

3 out of 5 stars Interesting with lots of details.......2000-12-01

This short interesting book gives insight into the day to day lives of scientists stationed in Antarctica as well as explaining some of the types of research that is done there. Overall, this is an excellent book. It only left me with one burning question - who on earth is Daniel?? This is not a good first choice if information is needed to write a report about the continent itself. But for additional information it is a wonderful choice.

MetaWorx is a foundation supported by the leading design schools and art academies of Switzerland. In this publication, MetaWorx presents the next generation of "Swiss Graphics", providing a challenging contribution to the research into the theory and expression of interactivity which must surely be one of the most stimulating and fascinating fields of art and design in our time. The transdisciplinary perspective opens a wide field where moments of interactivity are expressed in surprising and visionary installations. The projects are presented by the artists and designers themselves and accompanied by theoretical texts which reflect on interactivity in general and set the projects within the broader context of modern day culture. The accompanying DVD provides a video documentation including texts, pictures, sounds and applications. MetaWorx went public in October 2003 when an exhibition took place at Viper Basel, an international festival for film, video and new media.

                      2 out of 5 stars Misleading.......2001-06-12

The best part of this book is the pictures. As with many TFH books the promise exceeds the delivery. There is very little information of use to the hobbiest included in this work. So basic a fact as the size the fish reach is missing. Many of the fish shown are never or very rarely available to the hobbiest. Years ago TFH published a book, I beileve the title was "The Fishes of Lake Karibi". This book had nothing to do with the aquarium hobby, but rather was a study of the commercial fishery on this lake. A hobby publisher should publish hobby books and leave text and science books to someone else. Or publish them under another name.

4 out of 5 stars Hardcover to softcover!.......1999-12-22

The book pictured is a large hard cover book. This book I would very much like to have several copies of,as well as the paperback that is being sold which is a different book.

3 out of 5 stars Not bad, but there are better Central American cichlid books.......1998-03-02

Contains some useful information, but TFH's "Cichlids From Central America" book, by Ad Konings, is MUCH better.

A Passion for Daylilies: The Flowers & the People
                            By Sydney Eddison

They're not just orange and yellow anymore. And the people
who have created them and collect them are people you would like as neighbors.

Among the hundreds of gardening books I have read there are few that truly deserve the tittle, "Absolutely wonderful -- a great read." Sydney Eddison has never written anything but great, educational books that are good reads.

However, her daylily book is not just about Hemerocallis, it includes information about the people involved with daylilies, some history of the plant and how it has evolved. Did you know that the modern, hybrid daylily is essentially an American bred flower? Or did you know that most of the hybridizers have been - and still are - backyard hybridizers. Very few of them have had any training in botany.

While enjoying your read, you will want to meet and converse with the people in Sydney's book. After you finish it, do not be surprised if you end up looking for a local "Hemaholic" or Daylily Collector to find out how you can enjoy the beauty of the flower and the camaraderie of those involved with daylilies.

How could the book be improved? A publisher should sign her to write a new and larger book. My second choice would be a reprint of this book with at least a hundred pages of additional material.

If you can find a copy of this out of print book, buy it. It has become one of the most sought after gardening books.

This book is great to use in a center when teaching a unit on landforms and is also great for those kids who are aching to know more about the science rhelm of volcanoes. It's age appropriate and children at the Step 4 reading level will be challenged enough with it. :)

I think that this is a good book and I know that this is a good book. The part I like about it is when the volcano erupts. The part I don't like about it is when people died.I
would recommend this to a 4th grade reader and I would have preferred for it to have more pages. I give it a 5 stars because it has nice pictures and I learned new information about volcanoes.

                                  Product Description

The recent volcanic activity at Mount St. Helens is a continuing reminder of the explosive power of our western volcanoes. Fire Mountains of the West: The Cascade and Mono Lake Volcanoes is Stephen Harris s completely revised, thoroughly researched account of the volatile history and deadly potential of volcanoes spanning the West from California to southwestern British Columbia. Fire Mountains of the West is intended for the general reader with an interest in the geologic forces that shape our western mountainscape. It begins with an introduction to volcanoes, the processes that create them, and the glaciers that sculpt them. The heart of the book is a fascinating biography of each of the major volcanoes of the West. From the subterranean lava tube caves of the Medicine Lake volcano to the fire-and-ice formation of Mount Garibaldi, from the cataclysmic collapse of Crater Lake to the incinerating blast of modern Mount St. Helens, and from deadly volcanic gas presently killing trees at Mammoth Mountain to massive mudflows waiting to burst from Mount Rainier, Stephen Harris brings to life in dynamic, crystal-clear language the geologic story behind each of the major volcanoes of the Cascade Range and Mono Lake area. Dramatic photos and illuminating maps and diagrams graphically illustrate the features of these magnificent mountains. A brief section at the end of each chapter gives directions and descriptions for those visiting the volcano. Harris also offers a careful appraisal of the prospects of each for future eruptions some of which may be more devastating to human life and property that any in the past. The book ends with a hypothetical account of a future eruption at Mount Shasta. With a rare ability to describe geologic processes in layperson s terms and elegant prose, Harris inspires in readers great respect and awe for the rugged beauty as well as the violent potential of these majestic fire mountains.

5 out of 5 stars Fire Mountains of the West, 3rd Edition is excellent!.......2007-06-17

Anyone interested in the history and inner workings of each of the Cascade volcanoes will find this book rewarding. Like its predecessors, the 3rd edition is well organized and clearly written. But the new edition is greatly expanded with many more (and carefully documented) technical details. The introductory chapters on volcano formation and glaciers provide a nice overview. Chapters on the individual land forms (from the 'shield' Newberry Volcano to Crater Lake and Mt. Rainier) portray a range in vulcanism. Descriptions for visitors will enhance a trip to any of the sites.

                                  5 out of 5 stars A fascinating geologic history.......2003-11-09

Stephen Harris' Fire Mountains Of The West provides a fascinating geologic history of the Cascade and Mono Lake volcanoes of California. One might anticipate a technical discourse involving many geological facts: think again: this title provides an unusually lively, engaging dialogue which assumes no prior scientific background. From specific hazards of volcanoes to keys to viewing inactive volcanoes, this is an important guide.

5 out of 5 stars This book is awesome........2003-08-06

Dr. Harris has provided an outstanding guide to the Cascades here. He provides wonderful detail on all the big Cascade volcanoes from Garibaldi to Lassen, and covers Mono Lake/Long Valley, a geologically unstable area that deserves far more attention, as a bonus. Especially welcome is his information on Glacier Peak and Newberry, two of the most overlooked volcanoes of the Northwest. The geological detail is mid-range; Harris explains the chemical composition of different types of lava but does not overwhelm readers with charts and graphs.

Harris sometimes crosses over into the realm of tour guide, as he provides basic instructions on how to visit and climb the Cascade volcanoes, and he provides welcome information about the prehistoric and modern histories of the mountains, including the stories about how they got their many names (the story behind Mount Adams is great). Also included is a wealth of information about glaciers and the conflict between 'fire and ice.' However, this book is primarily designed to be a lesson about the nature of the 'fire mountains,' and there Harris succeeds on every level.

If you are remotely interested in geology, like to hike or climb in the Pacific Northwest, or simply live there yourself, you ought to know the story and potential of Rainier, Hood, St. Helens, and their kin. This is especially true if you have Hood or Rainier as a neighbor! Highest possible reccomendation.

5 out of 5 stars Great book for nongeologists!.......2003-08-05

For those of us with an interest in geology, but no degree in the field, this is a well written, easy to read and understand treatment of the subject of Cascades volcanos. It was a thoroughly enjoyable adventure into the world of vulcanism. Well worth reading.

5 out of 5 stars A useful, accurate guide to a beautiful, exciting region.......2002-03-07

Stephen Harris may be one of the last non-specialist authors. He doesn't confound the reader with copious scientific jargon. Insstead he conveys his love for what may be one of the last wild regions in the United States. In addition to excellent, understandable discussions of each volcano's potential danger and past history, Harris' technique enables the reader to use his book and a simple road map to plot the reader's own choice of which delightful scenic areas to visit. We visited the Oregon and southern Washington Cascades, as well as Mount Shasta, last September, and without Harris' well-planned guidebook, we would have missed many sights, such as Mount Newberry, and would have failed to fully appreciate others, such as the Columbia Gorge.
Harris' doesn't overwhelm the reader with propaganda about environmental spoliation by logging companies, but simply lets the facts speak for themselves. The book is an absolute must for anyone planning a vacation, in whole or in part, in the Cascades or Mono Lake region.

This book has some of the best photography of volcanoes I have ever seen. It's a great volcano book.

5 out of 5 stars fire on the mountain.......1999-12-15

I think this book is well writen, and easy to understand, but the thing i like the most about this amazing book is the coolerfull pictures. Most of this book is pictures of erupting valcanoes with captions explaning the pictures. This book taught me many, many things about volcanoes. I recumend this book, Fire on the Mountain for all ages.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent photography & captions, interesting reading.......1999-03-28

This book covers the different types of volcanoes with excellent photographs accompanying and expanding on the text. Even if you just look at the photos, the book's price is worth it, but the text really added to the book as well with very accurate geologic information in a non-textbook format suitable for the general public. The reading level is probably 9th grade and up. I thoroughly enjoyed the book and plan to give more copies to others as gifts.

5 out of 5 stars Gorgeous coffee table book!.......1998-08-05

After having worked and lived on Kilauea volcano, I can assure readers that Dorian Weisel's exquisite photographs are the next best thing to being in Hawaii! While lacking in serious scientific content, Fire on the Mountain is a gorgeous coffee table book that any house guest will enjoy browsing. Fire on the Mountain is also a wonderful introduction to Hawaiian volcanoes for the curious. Carl Johnson's writing is a bit flowery in places, but he describes the beauty and fury of Hawaiian volcanoes with genuine awe and appreciation.

                                              Book Description

Popular science at its best: a spectacular window into both the volcanic past and the fiery future astronomers predict for the solar system.

All the elements that form our planet were originally forged in cosmic furnaces: all the food we eat and thus our bodies themselves recycle molecules and atoms that once knew volcanic fire.

The most active—and most visited—volcano on earth is Kilauea in the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, seen by three million people every year. With its counterpart Piton de la Fournaise, on the French island of La Réunion in the Indian Ocean, it is characterized by extraordinary lava flows that travel great distances in a spectacular landscape. Together they form the focus of this dazzling photographic essay by two renowned photographers.

The photographs are all reproduced as thumbnails at the end of the book, with caption commentaries, and the reference material includes a glossary of terms. 100+ color photographs.

When he first started writing, Dagoberto Gilb was struggling to survive as a journeyman high-rise carpenter. Years later, he has won widespread acclaim as a crucial and compelling voice in contemporary American letters. Tackling everything from cockfighting to Cormac McCarthy, Gritos collects Gilb's essays and his popular commentaries for NPR's Fresh Air, offering a startling portrait of an artist-and a Mexican-American- working to find his place in both the cloistered literary world and the world at large, to say nothing of his strange and beloved borderland of Texas.

I love everything he read to us at Nueva Onda but the story in this book called ""Pride" I love so much. The best, about El Paso but about us in the valley too. About our people, our cultura, and our pride.

People need to learn more of Dagoberto and his work. We are lucky and I for one can not wsit for his next book and visit.

gilb read yesterday here at the arkansas literary festival and was the best speaker I heard. I can't tell you how much we enjoyed his talk and lecture. I came to this page to buy his essay book bc the festival forgot to order it! what we heard him read was a such treat and he was utterly entertaining. the women I was with were talking about the man's movie star looks and charm but I say put try to put that aside. the man and his writing are beyond a doubt talented.

I'm not sure what the last reviewer read, but I read "Gritos" b/c I have read rave reviews. As a Mexican-American, I was naturally excited to read the book. I was so not disappoinnted!! What was most impressive was how I couldn't put the book down. I didn't find a weak story in it, and I'd say all of them were brave and honest. I definately did not read anything poorly written or complaining about discrimination--that is a ridiculous charge! This is a brilliant book by a great writer and is a must read, especially if you are from the Southwest..

When Dagoberto Gilb stays on point, ain't nobody can touch him. Some of these essays are sheer genius. But too many of them are undisciplined rants. When he's self indulgent, it's embarrassing. He's so busy foaming on about being discriminated against for being Mexican, he lets the hard work of writing slide, and loses the reader's natural sympathy. He'd have a better case if he wrote it and didn't just type it half the time.
