5 out of 5 stars Hard-to-find classic for native plan lovers.......2006-08-01

If you're a student of native plants in the Western US, this is a must have book. Written by M Walter Pesman of the Denver Botanic Gardens, the book is organized by life zones ranging from plains to timberline. It's designed for the amateur botanist.

There were 10 editions of the book between 1975 and 1992. The illustrations are fine examples of the classic pen-and-ink botanical style. They are derived from 200 original works by Emma A. Ervin.

Copies are downright hard to find, so if you find one, I recommend snapping it up.

There are few corners of California in which Tom Stienstra has not set Vibram-soled foot at one time or another.

In this information-packed guidebook, the longtime San Francisco Chronicle outdoors columnist catalogues the best (and the rest) of the Golden State's trails, combining his encyclopedic knowledge with that of another accomplished trekker, Ann Marie Brown. The two cover more than a thousand hikes that range from short jaunts to multiday expeditions, rating each walk for length and difficulty and providing notes on water sources, points of interest, permits, contacts, and other useful data. At the most demanding end of the scale, for example, is a 14-mile scramble up Mount Shasta, for which they recommend that you carry an ice ax and crampons; on the moderate side is the 10.6-mile ramble through Pine Valley, in the coastal mountains above Big Sur, with "an up-and-down course that soon becomes more down than up"; and on the easy end is a 1.2-mile round-trip amble along the Desert View Nature Trail near the summit of Southern California's Laguna Mountain. In every instance, Stienstra and Brown tell what you can expect to see and where you're likely to encounter trouble in the form of storms, predatory mammals, or crowds.

Thoroughly updated, this is by far the best single source of information on planning a hiking trip in California. --Gregory McNamee

1 out of 5 stars If this is your only Ca hiking book, you've made a mistake!.......2004-09-23

Just completed a hiking trip to California, September 2004. I am a weekend hiker from Ohio. I was looking for a guide for the best hikes to take - FOR SIGHTSEEING. I thought that this book would lead me to the most scenic hikes in the Redwood area of Northern California. BIG MISTAKE. The point of my review is this: you CANNOT Trust this book to get you to the Best Hikes.

We did 5 hikes recommended in this Book. Two Costal Hikes, which were nice. THe book was helpful, and the rating Equitable.

We then did 3 hikes in Redwood Country. Two of his recommendations we a total bust, and a waste of TIME.

While the book has impressive reviews from newspapers and other sources, I offer my real world examples. It is my great disappointment in this book that has lead me to warn potential buyers. Not based on how it is written, but on my actual experience, IN THE FIELD, of going out, using the author's reccomendations, and hiking some trails.

1. Redwood Hike - Toumey Grove Trail Hike, rated a 9, at Richardson Grove State Park. What a joke. Nothing special about the hike. The Redwood Grove that you reach is very smallish, and not all that spectacular. Rest of the hike was nothing special either.

2. Redwood Hike - Rathert Grove Hike at Grizzly Creek State Park, rated a 10. Same story as above hike. We did speak with the camp host family, who directed us to the Cheatham Redwood Grove, several miles away, which was truly magical. This is where they filmed Star Wars, "Return of the Jedi." Not a lengthy hike, but this Grove of old Redwoods was truly magical, and the best Grove that we saw, espically after having just wasted TWO HIKES on Tom Stienstra's suggestions.

3. Redwood Hike - Prairie Creek State Park. While book lists one hike here, Fern Canyon, rated a 10, which we did - it was OK, he doesn't even mention the most magical, lengthy hike THERE. We did the James Irvine Trail, which was THE BEST REDWOOD HIKE that we did on our whole trip. We hiked the Irvine Trial to the Clintonia to Miner's Ridge, which brought us back to the Visitor's Center. About 4.6 miles of hiking through old growth, Costal Redwoods. This is another hike we would not have done, without the recommendation of the local camp host family.

4. Coastal Hikes - we did two mentioned in this Book. They were good. We did the Tomales Point Trail, at Point Reyes National Seashore - very nice, and the Bodega Head Loop, also very nice.

We began our trip in San Francisco, heading north, along the coast. We started off with a couple of coastal hikes that were nice. Once we got further north, to Redwood country, the hikes recommended were a complete waste. We had limited time, energy, and the hikes highly rated in this book were a complete disappointment. This became apparent when locals directed us to other, BETTER hikes in the area.

While this book is a decent resource for some basic trail information, you had better look to other books and resources to prepare for hiking in Northern California. When you only have a limited time in this part of California, you simply cannot afford the luxury of wasting time on crappy recommendations for hikes.

Does the book cover the whole state of California? Yes. Some good information? Yes. But after my experience with this book, I would NEVER recommend this book to any hiker, UNLESS it was the second or third source that they were going to use. Otherwise, you too may run the risk of hiking on "so-so trails," while missing some stunning beauty in the same area. That was certainly my experience with this book. What a shame!

5 out of 5 stars Must have if you're a California hiker.......2004-06-16

My wife and I have really gotten our money's worth out of this book over the past few summmers. Perfect for those who love hiking, but need somewhere to go. It's full of great day hikes and a few decent packpacking trips as well. My only complaint is that I'd really like to see a lot more of the 20 mile weekend backpacking trips added to the book. Regardless, it's well worth picking up.

4 out of 5 stars Awesome guide, but..........2004-01-13

This book is an almost perfect guide to hiking in Northern California. It's UNBELIEVABLY thorough. My only two quibbles are: 1. Directions to trailheads are a little iffy in places, and (perhaps more importantly) 2. The difficulty ratings are sometimes waaay off. The book uses a 1 (easiest) through 5 (most difficult) difficulty rating. And yesterday, my husband and I went on a hike in the east bay area that the book deemed a 1 in difficulty, and it was considerably more difficult than many 3s we've hiked in the past. What's up with that?! If an inexperienced hiker showed up in tennis shoes relying on that 1 rating, that person could potentially be in physical danger in places.

Having said all that, we've used this book for nearly 3 years and have found it completely spot-on when it comes to identifying beautiful hikes. It's been particularly useful when we've been vacationing in a part of the state with which we're not very familiar. I recommend using this book as a way to identify awesome hikes you want to try, but then you should contact the state/national/whatever park you're about to visit and get more detailed information about the hike before embarking on it.

5 out of 5 stars great hiking guide.......2003-12-21

This is the ultimate guide for California hiking! The descriptions were concise and provided all the information I needed to pick a hike that suited my needs. If you have room for one hiking guide- this is it.

2 out of 5 stars Refinement Needed.......2003-11-23

There's a ton of paper in this book, overboard, in my opinion. Wading through the pages in search of a hike is downright laborious. I've taken quite a few of the Sierra hikes and the information hasn't been detailed enough to really give me a feel for what to expect on the trail. They miscalculated the mileage and sometimes the elevation. I think it would be a better book if they chopped out half of the listings and concentrated on the truly best hikes in California.

5 out of 5 stars Great starting point........2006-02-07

The is a great book for ages 6-10 about the events that led up to, and the beginning of the Revolutionary War. My children really enjoyed the detailed illustrations, and it is written in a way that keeps their interest. I highly recommend it for homeschool families as a starting point for learning about the birth of our country.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent, informative, captivating, & fun!.......2006-01-19

My dd 9yo and ds 8yo LOVE this excellent review of the events leading up to the American Revolution. Many interesting antidotes make the stories come alive. We finished reading the book and they have begged to reread it again. We are homeschooling and covering American History - and have gotten many books on the topic from the library. None of the other books has had the ability to hold their interest as does "The Liberty Tree". Excellent illustrations - my children have asked me to find more books illustrated by David Wenzel. The text by Lucille Penner is very well done. You and your family will not be disappointed!

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful educational book material.......2001-02-12

I am a new middle school teaching asst. and have used this book in the classroom to help teach the American Revolution. If possible, anyone who can, I would appreciate as many copies as possible, to give to students who can not afford to buy them, themselves. I have very little money, but found this book would be great for future use and just can't find enough copies to seve a class of 25. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

5 out of 5 stars This fun picture book captures more information.......1998-10-13

than my daughter's fifth grade history text. An excellent book, this interesting Landmark History uses vivid pictures and lively text to kindle a flame of interest in the American Revolution. As a homeschooling mother I have watched my sons grow in their fascination for American history. My daughters, however, have found it dull. While my sons enjoyed listening to the Landmark Book series as much as they enjoyed the Hardy Boys, my daughters found it all quite uninteresting. I stumbled across this new (1998) book, The Liberty Tree:..., (a Picture Landmark Book) and read it to my daughters and my four-year-old son. Finally! A twinkle.

Written in short "chapters", this book is very easy to follow. With bursts of information containing cause and effect relationships, even the youngest could see how the French and Indian War led to events which led to events which led to the American Revolution. The bold-faced captions provide additional information which, when read alone at another sitting, enhance the usefulness of the book.

The reading level is not appropriate for 4 - 8 year-olds. (Lucille Recht Penner has done nice works for that age group, but this is not one of those.) As a read aloud, however, it does appeal to that age. My four-year-old was interested and remained seated for most of the book.

The girls insisted that I read parts to their older brothers -- especially the part about Paul Revere using a woman's petticoat to soften the sound of his oars during the first part of his famous ride. (They giggled when I read ..."it was still warm.")

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful introduction to the American Revolution.......1998-07-07

This non-fiction picture book is wonderfully illustrated and provides a BRIEF introduction to the beginnings of the American Revolution. It covers the various taxes and Acts imposed on the colonies, the Boston Masssacre, the Tea Party, the forming of the militias, women in the war, spies, etc. and ends with the signing of the Declaration.

Each section has a large illustration and about 8-10 short paragraphs supplemented with smaller pictures and captions to provide more detail and interesting anecdotes.

I think the Amazon-recommended reading level is misleading. I don't know any four-year-olds who would enjoy this book and none who could read it. I think the actual reading level is about grade 2-3.

I read it to my almost-six year old and she loved it. My nine-year old (who is an avid reader of history with a special interest in this time period) still enjoyed listening and managed to learn a (very) few new details.

There are 18 2-page sections and the book is indexed (a nice touch for this format). I will definitely get the other books in this series.

    Book Description

Noted artist and best-selling author Courtney Davis celebrates the intricate artistry of the great Celtic Christian scribes. Early Celtic artists drew upon ancient traditions to design exquisitely patterned jewelry, metalwork, and carvings. With the arrival of Celtic Christianity, their focus turned to the glorification of God, seen in magnificently illustrated manuscripts such as the Book of Kells. Drawing upon these two historical traditions, Davis offers a fresh look at Celtic ornamentation, using examples from famous manuscripts, gospels, and other works. "A very useful source for artists."--Library Journal.

5 out of 5 stars Best book on aquarium fishes.......2006-09-05

This is the best book on aquarium fishes I have ever seen. It covers 700 species, each illustrated with a nice color photo. For each species, family name, common name, scientific name, size, distribution, temperature range, pH range, dH range, food preference and a brief description are given. The information given is very accurate. For example, I did not know that the red-tailed sharks are mean when they get old.

Few books mentioned water hardness. This book gives dH value for every species. Only now I understand why swordtails did not live very long in my area.

      I highly recommend this book.

5 out of 5 stars An Illustrated Encyclopedia of Aquarium Fish.......2002-12-15

This is one of the better general fish encyclopedias that I have. It covers many species that others don't, and has great basic information on each one.
      Great buy for the money.

      5 out of 5 stars Guy's reviews.......2001-01-01

I have the most recent version of this book, and I would have to say it is one of the best reference books I have ever red, especially if you are thinking of setting up a new aquarium and don't have a clue what to put in it. It contains basic information about water temperature and chemistry requirements, along with size of the fish and other such basic information and colour photos of each fish mentioned. It is a good book to get a basic idea of the requirements of a certain fish, leaving you to research more detail about a fish elsewhere. If you only buy one such book for your aquarium library this is the book you should purchase.

      5 out of 5 stars Outstanding Reference.......2000-12-06

I don't actually own this book, but borrowed it from the local library. I found it to be an excellent reference to just about any fish I needed to know about. I believe that the beginner in the hobby will find this book a must and the more experience fish keeper invalueable if they wanted to branch out to a breed that they are not familiar with. Definitely worth having on your own bookshelf.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent reference for the hobbyist.......2000-03-28

I wish all fish books were so helpful! 600+ species are listed, and for each you learn natural distribution, temperature, ph & dh, size, food preferences, tank setup, temperament, and breeding. She often tells you what to look for in store specimens -- signs of ill health & such. Oh, and did I mention the color pictures?

4 out of 5 stars Great for the beginning hobbyist.......2000-05-29

This book is nicely devided into sections pertaining the different fish families. Information is given on general husbandry, feeding and also breeding. It covers the most commonly available fishes. Another nice feature for the beginning hobbyist of this book is (IMHO) the fact that it consistently gives you the scientific name followed by the common name. The informative text is lined with nice pictures. I can recommend this book to anyone who is starting out in the hobby. For the more advanced hobbyist it is a "nice thing to have" (if you are like me are always expanding your fish library :-)) but does not add much to the information you probably already have in other publications. The main reason I bought it is because it is the first publication I found that contained a picture of Hypancistrus zebra eventhough the information about this fish is minimal at best and didn't teach me anything I didn't already know.

David Joyce's outstanding plant encyclopedia, first published in Great Britain, has detailed descriptions and photographs of more than 3,000 plants. Though it still contains descriptions of worldwide plant communities (that show, for example, the similarities and differences between the prairies of Texas, European alpine meadows, and the grasslands of Africa and New Zealand), the plant directory has been adapted to the North American climate (which ranges from zone 1 to zone 11) by John Elsley. The directory is sorted into trees, shrubs, conifers, climbers, roses, perennials, bulbs/corms/tubers, annuals/biennials, and bamboos/grasses/ferns. With its nicely detailed listings, highly readable layout, and small but luminously clear photographs, this is the book you'll want to take along to the nursery.

                  Book Description

The Context of Scripture illuminatingly presents the multi-faceted world of ancient writing that forms the colourful background to the literature of the Hebrew Bible. Designed as a thorough and durable reference work for all engaged in the study of the Bible and the Ancient Near East, and involving many of the world's outstanding scholars in the field, it provides reliable access to a broad, balanced and representative collection of Ancient Near Eastern texts that have some bearing on the interpretation of the Bible. Translations of recently discovered texts are included, alongside new translations of better-known texts and in some cases the best existing translations of such texts.

The substantial three-volume work, with its specially designed page layout and large format, features full cross-referencing to comparable Bible passages, and new, up-to-date bibliographical annotations with judicious commentary. Its many distinct advantages over other collections will ensure the place of The Context of Scripture as a standard reference work for the 21st century.

Volume II, Monumental Inscriptions from the Biblical World, is devoted to building and votive inscriptions, seals, weights, treaties, collections of laws, and other genres originally inscribed on durable mediums or in multiple copies for long-term survival. Many are royal inscriptions, and nearly all are crucial to the reconstruction of the history of the Biblical world.

When a jazz-loving kitten named Nicky meets a legendary trumpet player, he learns how to play jazz and word travels fast—soon all the top musicians hear about this jazz cat and want to play with him. This charming story is illustrated with photographs of Nicky with jazz greats Roy Eldridge, Lionel Hampton, Lena Horne, Quincy Jones, Abbey Lincoln, and Gerry Mulligan as they meet and make friends. The colorful graphics and rhyming text—call and response conversation between Nicky and his new musician friends—reflect the humor, rhythm, and spirit of jazz itself. Children and adults alike will delight in his journey from curious jazz kitten to acclaimed jazz cat.

                  5 out of 5 stars My Baby's Favorite Book.......2006-08-02

My husband and I received Nicky the Jazz Cat as a gift from a close friend before our baby was born. Our baby is only five months old but this has been her favorite book for three months already. Her eyes light up every time she sees the cute cat on the cover. It's the right length for bedtime reading - not too short and not too long - and has wonderful pictures and interesting varied fonts to get your child interested in words and letters, as well as several musical instruments and important jazz musicians. We read Nicky the Jazz Cat, Goodnight Moon, and Hush Little Baby as our routine and our baby has been sleeping through the night very regularly.

I'd especially recommend this book for the young children (up to three years old) of anyone who is into jazz, or is a jazz musician.

5 out of 5 stars Superior Treatment of Jazz for Kids.......2006-03-08

Carol Friedman blends her photographic art, her cat Nicky and her love for jazz in this easy to read treatment of this musical genre for children. Photographs of major jazz musicians (Quincy Jones, Lena Horne, Lionel Hampton, Roy Eldridge ...) alongside her cat Nicky capture the attention of youngsters. The vocabulary is hip, fun and informative. This is one of the better books about jazz for young children.

Nicky the Jazz Cat is a great book. I really like the pictures. This book made me get the jazz. This book has some rhyming. I REALLY like this book.
Nicky is a black cat. This book is funny too. There are six people who are in it--Roy, Quincy, Lena, Gerry, Abbey and Hamp-- who are famous musicians or singers.

This book and its companion CD, "Nicky's Jazz for Kids" make a perfect gift for anyone who loves jazz, loves cats, or loves cats and jazz. My 5 y.o. daughter enjoys reading the book to us and equally loves hearing the great tunes on the CD. It's a welcome change from the standard saccharine children's music. Splurge on both items--Nicky won't disappoint!

I love this latest Nicky book! The design is perfect; the photos of Nicky endearing. The fun poetry in playful multi-sized fonts of different colors, some shimmering gold, is filled with intertwined Christmas and jazz imagery. Like snowflakes, jazzy mittens, Santa, the reindeer boogie woogie, angels and of course, cool cats in a bebop wonderland. I'll read it on Christmas Eve to my three young nephews, all Nicky book and cd fans. Then we'll dance, prance, sing and strut to Nicky's Jazz Christmas companion cd as we put finishing touches on the Christmas tree.

Confessed Nicky fans that we are, my friends and I have already bought several copies of "Nicky's Jazz Christmas" for upcoming holiday gifts, but we couldn't wait until Christmas to give it to our 2 and a half year old Nicky groupie. The latest in Carol Friedman's amazing series, this book is packed with adorable Nicky photos (not to mention poetic Christmas imagery) which our daughter personally narrates to us from the next room--what he's doing, wearing or saying-- and then she'll spontaneously sing a few phrases from Louis Prima's "Music goes Round and Around" from the Nicky's Jazz for Kids CD. (She's still learning the Christmas songs on the new CD). We couldn't be happier about the influence these books and CD's have had on her, and can't recommend Nicky's new Jazzy Christmas (and all the other Nicky products) enough. And even though I'm one of those complainers about too much Christmas music, I've already got the accompanying CD going in the car. It's adorable... our favorite Christmas CD so far.

I photographed my cat Nicky with legendary Jazz artists for nearly two decades. This collection of pictures became Nicky The Jazz Cat, and Nicky ended up being a cool little jazz ambassador for children—teaching kids about the magic of jazz, the value of friends and mentors, and the power of imagination and originality. I thought it would be fun to share a bit about Nicky's jazz genesis here. A Cool Cat's Journey tells the story of how Nicky came to meet and be photographed with his musician buddies and how he became a cool jazz cat. Fans can also sneak a peek at an exclusive Nicky portfolio of never-before-seen pictures with classical, soul, rock and rap icons—Nicky hung out with the best of them before he settled into his full time jazz groove….

Baseball is enormously popular in Latin America, and many of the sport's greatest players are from south of the border. Fourteen of these superstars, from 1900 to the 1960s, are profiled here. Modeled on traditional baseball cards, the book features stats and anecdotes about 14 pioneering Latino players ranging from Dolf Luque, the Cuban pitcher who became the first Latin American star in the major leagues, to Roberto Clemente, the legendary Puerto Rican outfielder of the 1950s and 1960s. ¡Beisbol! also recalls the hardships Latino players have faced and how they have contributed to baseball history. “Will be a welcome addition to any baseball collection.” — School Library Journal
