A Comprehensive Guide to West Virginia Hiking.......2003-05-23

If I were to choose one word to sum up this book, it would be "quantity." Allen states that he describes over 500 trails, and though I did not count them, that number sounds about right. Trail length ranges from about 1 mile to overnight backpack trips. Some background information is provided for each area, and a brief trail description (usually one paragraph) is provided. Maps are provided for the national forest lands (about half the hikes) but not for state parks or other land. The book is pocket-sized so that it can be carried easily on hikes. No matter how much hiking you have done in West Virginia, you will certainly find some destination in here you have not been.

Unfortunately, to fit 500 trails into 350 pages, something has to be omitted, and in this case what is omitted is details. I already mentioned the lack of maps, but many of the trail descriptions are nothing more than directions for walking. Few insights are given as to what will be seen on the trail. This lack of detail combined with a lack of trail summary (a table listing all the trails in the book) make it very hard to choose a trail to hike.

In summary, if you are looking for a comprehensive trail guide to the state of West Virginia, this is definitely the book for you. If you are looking for the best hiking West Virginia has to offer, this guide will help only slightly. Despite its shortcomings, this is still the best guide to West Virginia hiking on the market. It should be considered by those planning a hiking trip to the Mountain state.

Good info, Some things missing.......2001-04-07

This book has excellent information on a large number of trails in the Mountain State. The descriptions are detailed and, on the trails I followed, are very accurate. However, little attention is paid to summit data such as elevations, directions for side trips to reach summits, etc. As a person who is interested in "peak bagging", I was somewhat disappointed. There are about 173 summits in West Virginia over 4,000 feet and there is almost no reference to this attribute. This book is essential and has a tremendous amount of useful information, but does not go far enough.

A primer and guide for the home-based business owner.......1998-10-13

Money-Smart Secrets is an thorough guide for both new and experienced small business owners. The book is particularly suited for home-based, small businesses, but the principals are applicable to any size business.

The book provides concise business tips on budgeting, taxes, family vs. business balances, common sense, fee setting, and hiring. While none of the topics, fortunately, is covered exhaustively, the information provided is adequate for most people and serves as a good basis for discussing issues with a business advisor.

The most enjoyble part of the book is the practical discussion of topics in plain English -- eg, basing spending decisions on after-tax dollars. The book is obviously written from the experiences of a business owner. The most important tip, emphasized many times, is taking vacations. This may sound like an odd tip for a money-smart (not to be equated with cheap) guide, but vacations are an extremely necessary part of running your own business. This type of practical advice lends credibility to the book.

What I did not like: -- too much emphasis on home-based businesses -- some topics seemed to contain minor errors (computers and IRAs)

This is a clearly written book, with well thought out tips and advice. It is great for any person in a business or entreprenuer field. For new or established businesses, this is one book that is definetly worth its weight in gold!

This is the best, well-organized and well written resource I have seen on the subject of self-employment. The most important information regarding recordkeeping, taxes and cost savings are included in an easy to read format. A Must For Do-It-Yourself Wiring.......2005-10-14

I was in the process of re-wiring my house, and the thought of having to figure out
the wiring had me going bonkers. I wanted to make sure that the re-wire job was
done in a clean, thought out manner.

I came across the atHomeSmart product while doing my research. I figured
that for $20, why not. It turned out to be money well spent, and it saved
me time to boot.

The pre-printed labels and the included How-To projects, made my re-wire
project rather simple. If your looking for a product that not only explains

He starts with flatwork - by improving the basics at home, you can earn a few extra points in the dressage phase - often the more difficult discipline for event horses.

Next showjumping - William explains how he works his own horses to ensure they are careful over light showjumps. Finally cross country - William offers his advice, hints and tips on how to tackle the many different jumps or combinations a one-day eventer might encounter.

Throughout this book stunning montaged sequences of William jumping have been included to give the reader a real view of how he approaches, jumps, lands and gets away from a variety of fences. You can clearly see how the horses tackle each fence and how William's position differs depending on the type of obstacle.

Disappointed, not very technical........2004-11-01

Having drooled over William Fox-Pitt since Pony Club I am very disappointed to be giving this book a poor review. My expectations were perhaps too great. The first few chapters (Flatwork, Jumping) and those at the end (At The Competition, Get Your Horse Fit) I felt were a waste of paper. They essentially covered the basics and common sense tips experienced riders already know. Readers can go to other more specialized books for advice on these topics. However, I did enjoy reading more about William's background and early days.

The chapter I wanted more from was Cross Country. This book should have been re-focused as "Cross Country Schooling for Success" and more technical detail could have been added throughout. The take home message was to approach each fence with confidence, look ahead, maintain contact and keep your horse between hand and leg. Stay balanced with a secure lower leg. The text rarely got more detailed than that and training tips "if you look into a ditch, you'll end up in it!" again common sense advice. Experienced riders will want so much more, therefore I think this book will be better for the beginning event rider. But then photographs of advanced level jumps are not immediately relative to them. Also, the short two pages on introducing a young horse to water were basic. I've read a better guide in Practical Horseman magazine.

One of the main problems is that the text is by Kate Green. Although I appreciate many riders have another person write for them, I think you still want to feel that you are paying for William's advice. So you want it to read like William has written it, rather than just put his name to it. Thus when discussing photos of William riding over fences, it should read "Here I came in too fast, my reins got too long" etc etc., rather than "This pair came in too fast" or "This rider let his reins slip". Although many riders are photographed in the book, we can easily pick out William. The book would have a better feel, if it read like he wrote it.

The best part of this book is the excellent use of sequenced photography. There are some great shots and certainly a few photos that will make you cringe. It is nice to visualize where things went wrong, and this can be a great training tool. But I can imagine some of these photos discouraging the nervous rider. Experienced riders may appreciate this book as a good review and relish the photography - as I did.

Disappointment.......2005-12-30

The author certainy had a good idea for the book, ie reconnecting with his estranged father through their common love of gardening, but his execution of the idea really missed the point. He instead chose to mostly write an autobiography in which he made that fatal error common to many autobiographists in assumming that his life minutiae was of the same interest to to others that it was to him. The result is a suprisingly bad book. Given the author's carreer as a journalist, it is really surprising that his book is so unfocused and of such little interest.

Lee May is an excellent southern author. This is the story of reuniting with his estranged father and their mutual interest in gardening, but also is an account of the social changes during one man's life.

The bandido, the harlot, the male buffoon, the female clown, the Latin lover, and the dark lady—these have been the defining, and demeaning, images of Latinos in U.S. cinema for more than a century. In this book, Charles Ramírez Berg develops an innovative theory of stereotyping that accounts for the persistence of such images in U.S. popular culture. He also explores how Latino actors and filmmakers have actively subverted and resisted such stereotyping.

In the first part of the book, Berg sets forth his theory of stereotyping, defines the classic stereotypes, and investigates how actors such as Raúl Julia, Rosie Pérez, José Ferrer, Lupe Vélez, and Gilbert Roland have subverted stereotypical roles.
