INTRODUCTION
Famous for its beaches and its cricket players, tiny Antigua is rapidly becoming one of the Caribbean's most popular destinations. Quiet, unvisited and little- known just a generation ago, the country has taken full advantage of the publicity gained from its independence in 1981 - and the remarkable success of its cricketers since then - to push its name into the big league of West Indian tourism alongside Barbados and Jamaica.
Antigua's early European settlers came from Britain in the sixteenth century. They brought African slaves to clear the native vegetation and plant sugarcane: for centuries, the island was little more than a giant sugar factory, producing sugar and rum to send home to an increasingly sweet-toothed mother country. Around Antigua, the tall brick chimneys of a hundred deserted and decaying sugar mills bear witness to that long colonial era. Today, though, it is tourism that drives the country's economy; dozens of hotels and restaurants have sprung up around the coastline, there's a smart new airport, and people offer boat and catamaran cruises and scuba diving and snorkelling trips to the island's fabulous coral reefs.
If all you want to do is crash out on a beach for a week or two, you'll find Antigua hard to beat. The island is dotted with superb patches of sand - look out for Dickenson Bay in the northwest, Half Moon Bay in the east and Rendezvous Beach in the south - and, while the nightlife is generally pretty quiet, there are plenty of great places to eat and drink. But however lazy you're feeling, it's worth making the effort to get out and see some of the country. The superbly restored naval dockyard and the crumbling forts around English Harbour and Shirley Heights are as impressive as any historic site in the West Indies, and there are lots of other little nuggets to explore, including the capital, St John's, with its tiny museum and colourful quayside, and the old sugar estate at Betty's Hope. And, if you're prepared to do a bit of walking, you'll find some superb hikes that will take you out to completely deserted parts of the island.
Antigua's sister island Barbuda feels a world apart from its increasingly developed neighbour, even though it's just fifteen minutes away by plane. Despite its spectacular beaches and coral reefs, tourism is very low-key; for the island's tiny population, the pace of life seems to have changed little over the generations, and fishing is still the main occupation. Even if you can only manage a day-trip, you'll find it thoroughly repays the effort involved in organizing a tour.

Surprised by it's size.......2003-01-13
I examined numerous Antigua / Barbuda books in various stores and found this to be the best. It's physical size is tiny at 4" x 5.5" but it contained better information than any of the other books I saw. If you are looking for a book exclusively about Antigua and barbuda I would recommend buying this book. It will prove most useful if you review it before you start planning your vacation.
Bumping round Antigua!.......2002-10-23
10/10/02 Flew inverness-gatwick-antigua by BA and spent 10 days following the Rough Guide. As this isle has few road signs to speak of the Guide kept us on track and to places we would never have found or been aware of.The gorgeous secluded bay 400m back from Devil"s Bridge was indeed perfect and empty! Eating and drnking could also be relided upon ,Turner"s on Jonson"s point haveing a great view of Montserrat volcano(take bonocs),as well as ex food and svc. Having the guide made this holiday one i will remember, simple as that! Bon voyage.
Antigua guide..........2001-06-15
My fiancee and I are going to Antigua for our honeymoon. We are staying at an all-inclusive resort, but want to take a day to tour the island. This book was very informative on popular attractions, places to visit, transportation and prices. I was only dissapointed with the fact that there weren't that many photos of the island...but the few that were in there were very pretty! Definitly worth buying if you want a quick, informative overview of the island!

We went to Antigua to stop the world and jump off for a week. But we didn't want to completely ignore our surroundings. This great little guide provided us with the perfect amount of history and suggestions.

I found this book today at a teacher's Literacy Conference and fell in love with it. As I was reading so many ideas popped into my head. I can't wait to for school to start so I can teach from this book. Geography, Kindness, and family love are just a few things I will teach from this book. The cards come 4 to a page. There are 2 boy dolls, 1 Asian doll and 1 black doll in the set. The darlings are dressed to the nines in lavish velvets, organdy (?) and lace. Overall, it's unique and colorful: perfect for a quick valentine or birthday greeting and a very elegant alternative to Hallmark.
The only quibble I have is that mine arrived with a creased front cover and 2 creased cards on the 1st page. It was pretty obvious and I'm disappointed by Amazon's QC.
Send Creepy Antique Doll Postcards for Halloween!.......2003-01-14
The production quality of these postcards is [not good], but the subjects make up the difference. The dolls represent a range of ethnicities and mostly seem produced in the 19th and 20th centuries. They share an eerie lifelessness, like simulacrums who could be pinnochio's evil cousins. You'll want to write cheesy scary poetry on these cards and send them to your friends!

Juana Briones was a healer (some called her California's Clara Barton), a businesswoman, and a landowner. Her mother and grandparents came to California in the first expedition of pioneers from New Spain. Her parents helped build the mission and presidio of San Francisco. Juana herself was one of the first residents of the tiny pueblo that became San Francisco. While there, she helped sailors escape their brutal lives and made so many friends that when the United States took over California and questioned her land titles, her American allies helped her fight all the way to the Supreme Court and keep her land.Ultimately, she made enough money in her business ventures to buy a rancho, which now is the city of Palo Alto.
The Stories of Juana Briones is written as Juana might have told her life story to her children and grandchildren. Readers will learn about a remarkable Latina role model and a great deal about early California history.

A book about Californian history for the whole family.......2004-05-11
This book was different from the books I normally read.
The books I read are longer and are written for adults.
However, I still found this book interesting, and it's a book everybody who lives in California should read. There is a lot of information regarding history in it. That's why I think even people who don't live in California will enjoy the book, too.
The book is easy to read and the contents are not too childlike. Even older people can enjoy the book and learn about the history.
"The Stories of Juana Briones" is a history book but also good for people who don't like to read a "dry" history book.
I learned a lot from the story; the most important part for me was that no matter how and it is and how badly you struggle, especially living in another country, if you belive in something, try to be a good person, learn from people no matter where they are from and don't give up hope; you can reach whatever you want.
All in all ; I do think this book is an excellent book to read with the whole family. Everybody will understand it and learn about Californian history.

It is a short book but it has an amazing message for everybody. Her perseverance and her struggling spirit to reach a better future for her family was the best advice that I got from it.
I would like to recommend this admirable book because we can learn more about California History and how life teaches us to grow up. I believe that this deep message is the most remarkable for me.
Never lose hope, it is better to die happy.
Every day I mis up my dreams with the reality of life and this book help me to get my personal goals clear and to follow my ideal for the future.

A powerful narrative of a positive role model.......2002-09-06
The Stories Of Juana Briones is a rendition of a California pioneer, a citizen of Spain, Mexico, and the United States. She was unique in that, unlike most other women of the era, she owned land when California became part of America and many other Hispanic families lost their land. Juana Briones contested the loss of the family estate, took her case to the United States Supreme Court, and won -- even though she could not read or write. Her amazing life story, told through her own eyes as if to her grandchildren, makes for a powerful narrative of a positive role model, highly recommended especially for young readers ages 8 to 11.
