Book Description
The Seven Wonders of the World captured the human imagination almost 2,500 years ago, and we have been mesmerized ever since by extraordinary achievements. Although the ancient wonders are the best known, many such lists have been compiled, some of which include the even more marvelous works of nature. In this lavishly illustrated volume, the National Geographic Society celebrates nearly three dozen wonders -- the most amazing sights (and sites) in the world.
From the Pyramids of Giza and the Hanging Gardens of Babylon to the Panama Canal and the Golden Gate Bridge, here are the most impressive creations ever imagined and constructed. Here, too, are the most awesome features of nature -- the Himalaya in Asia, the Great Barrier Reef of Australia, the mist-shrouded Victoria Falls in Africa -- and much more, captured in nearly 200 stunning photographs and paintings.
Exploring 35 natural and man-made marvels, from the breathtaking summit of the Himalaya's Mount Everest to the depths of the Mid-Ocean Ridge, from the towering beacon of the Pharos of Alexandria to the skyscraping spire of Toronto's CN Tower, this fascinating book sweeps across recorded history and around the world to create a unique celebration of The Wonders of the World.

Book Description
What is it that makes Italian design so attractive, so inventive, so witty? Mama mia. Maybe the answer is to be found in Custom Built, a critically reflective look at unique and handcrafted objects by succeeding generations of Italian designers. Beginning in the 1930s and moving towards the present, this volume peers into the archeology of 20th-century Italian design, uncovering unique pieces created before the spread of industrial furniture culture and the mass-produced object, as well as prototypes who stand in ironic defiance of the factory-made objects they may have spawned. Included are designs by such luminaries as Franco Albini, Mario Asnago & Claudio Vender, Melchiorre Bega, Piero Bottoni, Luigi Caccia Dominioni, Pietro Chiesa, Luigi Figini & Gino Pollini, Ignazio Gardella, Piero Lingeri, Giuseppe Pagano, Gio Ponti, Piero Portaluppi, Gustavo Pulitzer, Guglielmo Ulrich and Luigi Vietti.

Book Description
Styles and lifestyles are fast becoming uniform under labels and definitions of fashion, and as an industry and a cultural form. Total Living is the point of no return in a project which, step-by-step, develops strategies whose goal it is to offer an even more sophisticated and targeted lifestyle. It is a place where there are definitions for clothes, behavior modes, and even the atmoshpheres and spaces in which one moves. Assuming the contours of a landscape of the future, this scenario raises topical themes and problems connected with the overwhelming power of consumerism. Accompanying scholarly essays consider the thematic universes of fashion designers and brands; models of total living in 20th century history; references to total living in mass culture; living and eating; arty fashion and fashionable art; the world of fashion design; the languages of shopping; urban fashion districts; and advertising as a narrative. A fabulously rich and interconnected iconographic passage visually narrates the various forms and ramifications of total living today and in the recent past through a succession of utopias, life-projects, urban visions, architecture, special homes, stores, art galleries, museums, and editorial pages and ads from fashion and lifestyle magazines. Total Living shows life for the show that it is--or has become. Published in collaboration with Pitti Immagine.
Customer Reviews:
Never tell a book by it's cover.......2002-11-03
Inspite and not despite the cover this book is an innovative and artistic compilation of images meant to provoke critical thought and thinking. The cover is a brilliant documentary of the ever increasing blanket of uniformity or branding, labels and marketing. The cover provides minor shock value in good taste relative to much of what is used by advertisers today and is a preview as to the consumerist phenonema that you are drawn to conclude from making your own connections between related images that are placed in a seemingly random fashion throughout the first 350 pages of this book.
Entertaining and insightful if you are familiar with popular culture.

Customer Reviews:
Good introduction to training your dog.......2007-05-27
This book is easy to understand and covers basic dog training and tackling specific problems. The authors like the "reward with a treat" approach but they don't rule out gentle corrections. They do warn against harsh corrections, explaining why punishment can make your dog fearful.
Customer Reviews:
The Best Dog Breed Book!!.......2004-07-03
This is a great dog breed book! Not only are the pictures wonderful (excellent speciments of each breed), but I love the information and history offered on each breed. A summary of the breed standard is included, as well as, temperment and level of activity, potential health problems, and growth information on each breed. I have looked at many breed books and this is my absolute favorite.
Please don't buy this book.......2004-02-08
This book was really disappointing. Over the last 15 years, our family has owned an Irish Setter, Lab, and Standard Poodle. We bought several books to start researching other breeds prior to beginning a search for a new dog. In the preface of this book, it says that the authors of the book have surveyed breeders and owners of the breeds and they trust that the contributors have been candid and realistic. Well they weren't. Do you think the breeders and owners might have been a little partial to their respective breeds??? Much of the information was sugar coated. "Paws to Consider" by Kilcommons and Wilson is a much more objective book. It is based on the authors 45 years of combined experience as dog trainers.
Truly great book.......2001-02-14
I have several dog books, but this is my favorite. It has lots of wonderful color pictures of the dogs, and detailed information on each breed. An excellent book for dog lovers, as well as an exceptional refrence for anyone researching dog breeds for themselves.
Truly great book.......2001-02-14

Good info about breeds, lots of good pictures........2000-01-06
This book has alot of information about each breed but not alot of general dog information. Thats what I liked about it. It has alot of breeds listed, with 4 of 5 photos of each one. It describes the AKC standard, health problems, and characteristics of each breed. A great coffee table book for dog lovers.

Book Description
After major construction is completed on a landscape, adding personal finishing touches is what turns the yard into a genuine extension of the home, allowing it to reflect the personality and tastes of the owner. In established landscapes, adding finishing touches is an easy way to 'remodel' the outdoor home and make it new again.
The Complete Guide to Yards & Garden Features presents more than 60 complete projects to create practical and decorative finishing features for the outdoor home. It features a wide assortment of building materials, including wood, masonry, and metals, with complete directions for working with these materials. The book includes projects for the living garden, such as installing decorative edging, constructing a rock garden, and building planters and window boxes. It also includes projects for the general landscape, such as building decorative gates, ornamental fountains, and benches. Each project includes detailed plans and comprehensive how-to directions accompanied by color photos and illustrations.

Book Description
This important study examines the Indo-Muslim attitude towards the Ottomans from the start of the Russo-Turkish war in 1877 until the end of the Caliphate in 1924. The period treated coincides with what is commonly described as the Pan-Islamic Movement; the British reaction to the Pan-Islamic developments is also discussed extensively. No comprehensive study to date has dealt with the nature of the relations between the Ottomans and other Muslims, and therefore this work provides new historical, religious and political perspectives on the modern history of Indian Muslims. In addition to Indian, Pakistani, Ottoman and British archival material, publications such as diaries, memoirs, newspapers and books have been incorporated, including writings in Urdu which are generally inaccessible to most historians studying late nineteenth-century Ottoman history.
Customer Reviews:
Pan-Islamism.......2001-08-06
The Indian romance with the Ottoman Empire has been known from British and Indian sources, but Özcan fleshes out the story - and a fascinating one it is - with information from the Turkish archives. First, he shows that the Indian connection did not begin, as is usually thought, in the 1870s, but goes back to the 1530s, when the Ottomans sent a fleet of two thousand men to Diu and Indian Muslims expressed a desire for Ottoman suzerainty. By the 1550s, a cultural nexus had also grown up, so that a renowned Turkish architect was building in Agra and Delhi. It then continued; inn 1777, for example, the sultan of Malabar sought financial help from Istanbul.
Second, Özcan shows how the Ottoman Empire filled this same role for a variety of other Muslim countries-such as the khanates of Central Asia and distant Atjeh (in today's Indonesia). Interestingly, these states not only asked for Ottoman help (which they sometimes got-twenty battleships to Atjeh to fight the Portuguese in 1556) but also offered their own services (the khan of Bukhara offered all help in 1719 against Russia).
With the collapse of Muslim power in India in 1857, a longing developed there for the symbols of Turkish sovereignty, which the British agilely exploited their own purposes (for example, prevailing on the Ottoman sultan to encourage Indians to accept British rule). Sultan Abdülhamit II (r. 1876-1908) put great stress on his pan-Islamic role, going so far as to assert that "one word" from him "would be enough for starting a jehad against ... the Christians." Of course, when war came in 1914, that "one word" proved not to be enough, and although the Indian Muslims remained attached to their Turkish coreligionists, they did not revolt against British rule. Contrarily, the Indians could do nothing to stop Kemal Atatürk from abolishing the caliphate in 1924, an act that effectively cut the links between Turkey's and India's Muslims.
Middle East Quarterly, June 1999
Its a great contribution and an indispensable source........1999-06-22
...There are a few works on the relations between the Ottomans and the Indian muslims. The existing ones however, mainly based on the English sources. The fact that the Ottoman archival material used for the first time in a study dealing also with the modern history of the Indian muslims vis a vi the British and the Ottomans, makes this study indispensable for those who are interested in the history of respective lands. Therefore Dr. Ozcan's work is a great contribution and deserves every credit....

Book Description
"This book's title, Rough Beauty, conveys Anderson's conviction that the hard scrabble lives of most of the residents of Vidor, Texas, are worthy of our attention, but it also conveys that he does not seek to beautify their lives by removing the crude edges." -- Anne Wilkes Tucker
A powerful photographic documentation of the people and places a poor and isolated town in rural southeast Texas, most known for its long history as a KKK town.
Begun in fall 2003 and completed in early 2006 (after fifty trips), Rough Beauty explores the character and burden -- and the resilience and off-kilter beauty -- of a community branded by its history. Vidor is reviled for its history of Klan activities, but behind this stereotype lingers a town filled with people who have not been able to lift themselves up and a crushing poverty sometimes reminiscent of the Great Depression. Anderson's images show a hidden beauty that lies dormant even in the roughest places.
Winner of the Santa Fe Center for Photography 2005 Project Competition.
Exhibition tour begins fall 2006 and continues throughout 2007.
Customer Reviews:
Black and white makes things look depressing........2007-01-16
There is a lot of controversy surrounding this book. I have lived in Vidor for two years now. I grew up in Houston and moved here for work. I won't live here forever. A few more years perhaps. I met Dave anderson three days after Hurricane Rita made a direct hit on Southeast Texas and Soutwest Louisiana. I was standing amongst the debris that was my home when Dave came along and asked to take a few pictures. He did help me move some furniture that was too big for me to handle by myself. The pictures in this book show very dreary looking Vidorians living in poverty. The black and white amplifies this look. There is another side of Vidor that is middle class that doesn't show up in this book. Vidor looks identical to dozens of other east Texas towns. Dave is a good photographer and I commend him on the photographs. They are well done and interesting. I can tell he put a lot of time into the photos. Please don't form a full opinion of Vidor from this one book. Look around the town yourself and get a balanced look.
Anderson Accomplishes Delicate Balance.......2006-11-28
I was very impressed with this incredible book with quiet and poetic images. Photographer Dave Anderson is doing what the best and most important photography today does - addressing social issues in a dignified manner. The resulting portrait of Vidor is a difficult but sweet one that presses into details of quiet beauty that we might never see if we were walking through the same streets. I found the photographs of children endearing and sweet. I have never been through the town in question but but love to visit after seeing Anderson's view of the town. I think the people of Vidor would be complemented by this sweet portrayal of a part of their town that is surely ignored by most.
Not the whole story.......2006-11-24
This is an interesting but skewed view of Vidor. Sure, there is poverty as there is in any town or city in America. There are also people who are well educated and are middle and upper middle class. The town has a reputation because of events that took place a long time ago. The people of the town have tried to overcome this reputation yet the local and national news media want to keep dragging it out and rehashing it. I graduated high school here and still live here, however I also have a college education as do all of my friends. My parents are both college educated as are many others in Vidor. So, while this book may have a certain story to tell, it is certainly not the whole story. The authors of the book could have picked any small town in America and shown similar pictures.
FOTO Magaizne.......2006-11-14
I ran across an article in FOTO Magazine, and I would have to say I was appalled. I was raised in Vidor, Texas and have lived there all of my childhood. I had family memembers that walked with the KKK, I'm not proud of that by no means. But going as far as saying that it is still active there, is just wrong. Vidor residents have wanted so badly to get rid of that title. Yeah the klan back in 2005 set up right on HWY 105. But living near the area where they where set up. I watched and NEVER saw a person stop. The Klan has been dead in Vidor for a VERY long time. Yes, there are a few people in Vidor who hate blacks, but that is everywhere. People just need to stop saying it. After hurricane Rita, Vidor opened many doors for the people of LA and not just whites but blacks as well. I my self have black friends and I don't see color I see them.
Vidor does not have the most poverty in southeast Texas. I can name a few towns who are far worse than Vidor and who do infact hate the black community. The schools in Vidor are some of the best in the area. I was told by many teachers whom I'm friends with and whom also have worked in other school in the state. And everyone in Southeast Texas does some form of labor work, construction, etc... but that is the type of work needed around our area. I've lived in other states, and laborers are all over the world. I have more to say, but I'm just not going to go on.
the power of perception.......2006-11-14
I sound like an NPR nut, but after I heard David Anderson's interview on NRP's Day-to-Day, I had to take a look at this book. Anderson's camera opens our eyes to areas of our world that we overlook, whether it asks us to see a part of the country with a troubled history that we'd rather leave to our own prejudice, or it asks us to find our own inner landscape unexpectedly reflected in the portrait of a stranger. The presentation of Anderson's beautiful photos of Vidor, Texas by Tucker and Anderson are clearly products of a photographer with a thoughtful eye. I hope I'm conveying my enthusiasm well without sounding too thinky-thinky. These photos grab the eye and don't let you sit down. It's themes and beauty are perfect for the holidays-- I'm definitely gifting this book.
Book Description
If you love smart, sassy fiction with some downhome Texas humor, you'll love this smashing follow up to the Dixies hardcover debut, MY HEART MAY BE BROKEN, BUT MY HAIR STILL LOOKS GREAT.
Fans of Mary Kay Andrews won't be able to resist Dixie Cash. Description Debbie Sue Overstreet and her best pal Edwina––the Domestic Equalizers––have one motto: don't get mad get evidence! So when these hairdressers/private eyes get wrapped up in a new mystery you just know there's going to be trouble. Quint Matthews, an old beau of Debbie Sue's and a heart–breakin' rodeo rider, comes to down asking for their help––his identity's been swiped by a woman he met on the internet. They agree to get to the bottom of things, and get into a whole heap of trouble. As for Quint, he's never one to learn a lesson. He's got a date in Salt Lick, Texas, with a woman he met, yep, on line––but what he doesn't know is she was put there by her own daughter!
Hearts are about to get broken all around Texas, but not before Debbie Sue and Edwina make things right for everybody!
Customer Reviews:
I liked it okay.........2007-04-27
I love the series but this, the third book in the series, fell a bit short. I liked it but not nearly as much as the other two. I think it's because of the focus of the book not being the core characters Debbie Sue Overstreet and Edwina.
This book deals with Quint Matthews; Debbie Sue's ex, who lands himself in trouble with Internet dating and an overly large ego. After meeting Monica online Quint finds his identity has been stolen. Monica disappears as the credit card bills mount. So Quint turns to the Domestic Equalizers, Debbie Sue and Edwina's detective agency, for help. Driven largely by his overly inflated ego it's easy to see how Quint winds up in a big mess. Since he's going to be in and around Salt Lick anyway Quint sets up a date with Allison Barker, whom he also "met" on the internet.
Allison is surprised to find that her daughter has posted her profile on an online dating service. Jill has not only been talking with men online posing as her mother Allison, but has set up a date with Quint. When Quint shows up on her doorstep Allison actually goes on the date and meets Tag, Quint's friend, whom she finds more interesting then the drunken self centered cowboy. Big surprise there.
While Quint is a good secondary character he's less then likeable as the front man. I couldn't understand why any decent person would continue to agree to go out with Quint since he can't seem to finish a date between getting drunk or having a allergic reaction that has him hooking up with the EMT.
The identity theft mystery is not really a mystery at all and the murder isn't really a murder. We do see gender confused Eugene/Janine again who we met in the second book in the series. He/she has a history with Quint that is less then interesting. While I really liked Eugene/Janine in the last book he/she fell largely flat here.
Even with all the criticisms I still found this book amusing and it is nice to get a glimpse of Debbie Sue and Edwina again. Too bad their husbands were largely MIA. There are some really funny elements in this book that I felt rated the four stars, the toy party for instance. These are the bits that keep me reading, the funny little pieces that make the book worth reading.
I am hoping for another book in this series, if it's centered more around the original characters.
Fun Read!.......2007-04-15
The books by Dixie Cash are worth the price of admission for their titles alone, and this installment was much better plotted than My Heart May Be Broken, but my Hair Still Looks Great. This book is a combination comedy of errors, Texas charm, and old-fashioned romance -- with a little mystery thrown in for good measure, and all of it is highly enjoyable.
Dixie Cash.......2007-01-10
I Gave You My Heart is a great southern humor read. Highly recommend it for laughs.
madcap Domestic Equalizers mystery .......2006-11-06
In Salt Lick, Texas former rodeo superstar Quint Matthews asks his ex girlfriend Debbie Sue Overstreet and her "Domestic Equalizers" partner Edwina Perkins-Martin to uncover the hideaway of the thief using his credit card. He informs the ladies that he was dating Veronica, but she vanished leaving his credit in shambles. Finally he insists they low key everything as he is in hiding after a highly publicized fiasco involving a Vegas transvestite. The beauty parlor owners agree to investigate the theft.
Quint fails to inform the two sleuths that he also is in town to meet in person for the first time his new on line girlfriend Allison Barker, a single mother raising a twelve years old daughter. What Quint does not know is that it is not the mom agreeing to a date, but the daughter masquerading as her mother. As the Equalizers work the case, Quint and Allison go out on a date, but she likes his friend Tag Freeman much more. Besides which, Quint has new problems with a stalker and a murder with him as the only suspect.
The third madcap Domestic Equalizers mystery (see MY HEART MAY BE BROKEN BUT MY HAIR STILL LOOKS GREAT and SINCE YOU'RE LEAVING ANYWAY, TAKE OUT THE TRASH) is a zany way out West teas tale filled with an eccentric cast (including the lead females). The wild enjoyable story line is character driven. Quint is quite a character as he jumps from the frying pan into the fire time after time. Edwina and Debbie Sue are as always stirring up trouble in between fixing hair as they try to locate Veronica until Quint gets in even deeper and they have to prove his innocence based on his being stupid not a killer. Dixie cash provides an amusing insane by fun thriller.

Beautiful and practical gardens.......2003-04-06
For one who loves books they visit libraries and book stores to just smell the paper. Well that works for lovers of gardens also. This book contains picture of beautiful and practical gardens. I have to admit I bought it for pictures of my favorite garden that people come from neighboring states to see. That is Weston Gardens (designed by Randy Weston). Ninety percent of my plants and ideas come form walking through Weston gardens. Many of the other gardens also have practical ideas for Texas gardens.
iInspiring, shows the creative range of using natives........1998-08-31
An eye-opening look at what can be done with natives. This book probably couldn't have been done ten years ago, but clearly the native plant movement is alive and well and growing by leaps and bounds. Common sense gardening. A must for any Texas homeowner.
Landscaping using Texas natives........1998-08-06
I was disappointed in latest Wasowski book. Projects by landscape architects using Texas natives seemed more like Texas architectural guide.Pictures were small and one did not recognize xeriscape award recipient,Ron Bolton of Dripping Springs. References in back were useful.Good coffee table/novice gardener book.

Cowboy Hat Book, The (rev)
ASIN: 1586851918 |
Book Description
$6.95 paper 1-58685-191-8 4 x 6 in, 96 pp, Line Illustrations Throughout, Rights: W, Western Humor A western humor classic is back! Hats & the Cowboys Who Wear Them, by celebrated western humorist Texas Bix Bender, reveals in hilarious detail the personality profiles of the cowfolk underneath their hats. In fact, Bender cautions, choosing a cowboy hat should be done with much care because it tells just exactly who you are. The man who wears a Cattleman's style, for instance, "likes to sing in the shower, in his truck and under women's balconies. He hopes to get a recordin' contract. After all, George Strait wears a Cattleman, and look what it did for him." Bender covers forty other traditional cowboy hat designs, imparting similar jewels of western-tinged wisdom for each. He also takes care to rope in all the trimmings, addressing hatbands, feathers, and the dangers of "hat hair" in this laugh-out-loud little book. Revised with all-new illustrations, Hats & the Cowboys Who Wear Them is one more uproarious volume from a sure-selling humorist. Texas Bix Bender is the author of Gibbs Smith, Publisher's "Don't Squat . . ." series of books. Now a million-selling author, he has worked as a writer for television. He lives just outside Nashville, Tennessee.

Book Description
From reviews of the first edition: "This deceptively slender volume is three things: a how-to book, an aesthetic feast and a moral tale.... To save a last remnant [of the forest] is a triumph, but it is a triumph to be savored in sadness. Our ancestors found East Texas a land of beauty; we leave it a land of beauty spots." --Dallas Morning News BIG SLOUGH. TURKEY HILL. INDIAN MOUNDS. UPLAND ISLAND. LITTLE LAKE CREEK. This guide provides all the information a visitor needs to understand, enjoy, and protect these unique wildernesses. Expanded from the 1986 edition, it includes three new chapters that offer a wealth of additional and updated detail about the diverse forest communities that hikers will encounter in the areas. Scenic Bend of the Neches, a recently proposed Research Natural Area, is also covered for the first time. Designed for a wide range of explorers, from casual walkers to primitive campers, the book guides you to the wildernesses' perimeters by road, suggests walking routes to choice spots inside, and even recommends places to camp. Redesigned and updated maps complement the text, which is illustrated with artistically framed nature photographs.

Realms of Beauty may become history.......2001-07-06
Edward Fritz's REALMS OF BEAUTY, along with the photography of Jess Alford, may give us our last full glimpse of the five natural wilderness areas of Texas before massive dams and federal policies allowing timber cutting in federal forests wipe out the beauty and diversity the book documents. Better yet, details in accessing the areas, what to take, and what to look for-- add to the value for first time Texas Wilderness Walkers. Though "Ned" Fritz has spent a lifetime as a constant defender of public forest areas, this book sticks to a non-political understanding of the unique ecosystems and seasonal changes in the wilderness areas as well as a geological timeline that shows the buildup of the Texas forests over millions of years. As you read each section of the book, there's no doubt that the writer has been there himself and is sharing what you need to know before trying a wilderness hike on your own when cool weather comes!

Gotta Love Texas.......2005-09-05
Very entertaining but educational too, this book has already become my 8 year old daughter's favorite bedtime story. I'm also sending this story to some Texas friends currently living in other states, so that anytime they get homesick, they can pick up this book and get a little dose of home!
Precious!.......2005-09-04
This picture-book about how the mockingbird became the official State Bird of Texas is an original and well told tale. Although the story is fiction, there are lots of educational facts about The Lone Star State; its geography, its birds and its uniqueness! Our students truly enjoyed this story of how Molly Mockingbird finds her own true voice and song just in time for the talent competition of the Texas State Bird Pageant ... other favorite characters included Gabby Green Jay, Owlma Owl, Bonita Blackbird, Carley Cardinal, Guadeloupe Gull & Dovie Crockett! Learn about Texas birds in a fun way and don't miss this exceptional addition to really good Texas Children's Books ... apparently the author and illustrator are also working on other State Bird Books, these will be wonderful to collect, especially if you are an Elementary School Librarian like I am!

Biography of award-winning actor, Jimmy Smits, best known for his televison roles in "L.A. Law" and "NYPD BLUE."
Customer Reviews:
Fun for Jimmy Smits Fans.......1999-04-17
I can't see anyone who is not a Jimmy Smits fan to be very interested in this book. But if you are a fan and collect Smits bits and pieces, be sure and buy a copy. Included are a few nice photos and a brief outline of the The Big Guy's life. Be warned--there are a few errors in the information, but mostly just little things a fanatic like myself would find jarring. Be warned too--it is a bit pricey for what you get, as it is definately at a juvenile reading level. All in all, as a devout Smits fan, I'm glad to have my copy of one of the few books about this publicity-shy hero!
