Excellent Resource.......2004-07-09

My family is from Trinidad, so I am already quite familiar with the island and its culture and customs. Nevertheless, I learned so much from this book regarding the rich history of Trinidad and Tobago ("T & T"). It is also an excellent travel guide. Photography is wonderful. I couldn't be any more pleased with this book. In fact, I will be taking it with me on my next trip to T & T.

The Best Source of Information for residents and visitors.......2000-06-20

This book was both insightful and accurate. It provided detailed information about the people, culture, customs and the lifestyle of the Trinidadian and Tobagonian people. There are many pictures representing the most popular vacation spots and the book provides historical detail about the areas and all of the influences of the various countries to colonize Trinidad. It provided a wealth of information for the average reader and even supplements the knowledge of the local Trinidadian who cannot accurately explain certain aspects of the culture. It is a must have book for every Trinidadian and Tobagonian and anyone who intends to visit Trinidad and Tobago. I can honestly say that the authors of this book did their research in an attempt to provide a fair and across the board view of all the racial groups which live in Trinidad and Tobago. The pictures are vivid and the diversity and beauty of the flora and fauna of Trinidad is beautifully exhibited in this book. The pictures alone would make one homesick and long to return to the beautiful island. This is one of the best sources of information I have come across on Trinidad and Tobago it provides, historical, geographical, cultural, political and social views of this wonderful paradise island.

Great for orienting to the country.......1997-12-16

I was told by the locals that I was "well read" after reading this one. Lot's of pictures, lots of history and lots of current information make it a perfect preparation for a trip to the island.

Best as an information source...NOT a guide.......2007-06-28

All in all I was disappointed with this book. I purchased it as a guide around T&T, but it's not very useful for that. It's a great source of information about Trinidad, as far as the history and culture, but don't waste your money if you're looking for a solid guidebook. The best book by far was the Rough Guide to T&T. I spent 9 days there and the Rough Guide was literally my Bible, I didn't go anywhere without it. If you're planning a trip and need a solid guide book for where to stay, where to go, and how to get around, don't purchase the Insight Guide. If you're into colorful pictures and historical information, this is the book for you.

Wonderful pictures and prose.......2005-01-25

I used to live in Trinidad and Tobago, and I can tell you ... this is the absolute best travel book on Trinidad. The folks at Insight Guides really do their homework on whatever country they're covering, and this is no exception. The pictures are amazing. Each section ... covering history, music, food, etc ... is well-researched and quite entertaining. They tell it like it is, good or bad.

I often read this book when I'm "homesick" for my expat life in Trinidad, and I feel as though I've taken a small vacation there.

Covers sub classes from France, Germany, Italy, Japan, UK and USA. Has either artwork or a photo of most types and very basic information such as class, displacement, dimensions, armament, propulsion and performance. There is also a very brief history of each class.

What a nicely written book about Collies. It has a more in depth look at the Collie as far as Medical problems go. This is a must for the Collie owner whether new to Collies or not. I highly recommend this book.

A MUST FOR ANY GARDENER.......2007-01-15

This is a great and practical gardening "how to" book, especially as regards raised beds. Jeff Ball has some ingenious ideas. Get it if you can find it; it is out of print now. I feel lucky to have found it on Amazon. Keep a lookout for all his books, and if you are really lucky, your newspaper will carry his weekly column. We have gardened for over 35 years, and still learn new things from him all the time.

Impacting Images !.......2003-09-07

This outstanding war photographer, as illustrated in this book, you can find his shooting subjects switching from 'mem fighting in the front' to 'women & children suffering behind'. This does not talk about art, but more than art.

It is covering a number of warfares around the globe in recent history, like, Cyprus, Israel, Congo, Biafra, Vietnam, Pakistan, Cambodia, Iraq, etc.

Some pictures should not be missed :

Page 74 - Souvenir hunters (I refer to the dead Vietnamese soldier with his belongings) / Page 42 - Turkish gunman, Limassol / Page 161 - Falange gunman serenading the corpse of a young Palestinian girl / Page 172 - Sailboat on the Gandak river near Patna

Moving.......2002-03-05

I read about this book in American Photo magazine, and having heard nothing else, decided to order it. I can say that this is my absolute favorite! If you are at all curious about it, don't hesitate - you may miss the chance to own this incredible book.

From the first image to the last, McCullin shows a perspective rarely seen in any sort of photo journalism. It's like he tries to separate from the action to be professional, but finds himself wound up in it time and time again. He intersperses images of hope, but all with the same pessimistic tone. Even from a sheerly technical standpoint, his images carry breathtaking weight.

It has been said time and time again, and even by McCullin himself, that his images are often printed very darkly. I think this style of contrasty grain enhances the experience and appreciation for his pictures. If you're looking for maximum slickness, look for the carefully planned and meticulously arranged portraits of Herb Ritts. If you're looking for photos that force the truth and emmotion of reality, this book is unmatched.

A rare talent!.......2000-07-26

Many years ago I processed Don's films for him. Bags of films straight from the wars of Viet Nam etc. I was only young but I was in complete awe of Don. Don was one of many well known photographers I met during my time in a professional lab but he was rather special. The sights he had witnessed were written on his somewhat sad face. A terrific guy who even had the time to talk to me, the darkroom junior. That was 30 years ago but I still marvel at the images he has created. Good luck Don, I wish you every happiness.

Great Photojournalist.......2000-04-07

I admired the photos in this book very much. Don McCullin is a powerful photographer. Many of these photos are mesmerizing and I would highly recommend this book.

I first heard about McCullin through a segment of the television documentary by Kathy and Amy Eldon on CNN called Dying To Tell the Story.

I bought SLEEPING WITH GHOSTS soon after watching that program because I was struck by McCullin's photos on television. It has been more than one year since I purchased this book through Amazon and I continue to learn things ( about photography, art, humanity, journalism ) as I look at it again and again. Each time I pick it up ( atleast once a month ) and look through the pages I learn something new, because McCullin is photojournalist in the finest sense of the word.

In this age of tabloid journalism and paparazzi - it is wonderful to see a shining example of what photo essays can and should be.

SLEEPING WITH GHOSTS is a reminder that documentary photography is IMPORTANT - it can have integrity - and it is a service to the world.

I'm greatly looking forward to looking through Don McCullin's new book, INDIA.
