The Sierra High Route: Traversing Timberline Country.......2007-03-09

A FANTASTIC book about an awesome wilderness area! This is a must do hiking trail for me. I bought my brother this same book and I'm already planning our hike.

Wonderful off-trail hiking in the Sierra.......2006-04-06

This book is the ideal companion for everyone who likes walking off-trail on uneven terrain with a heavy pack. We used it last summer to hike a section of "the high route" (from devils postpile to tuolumne meadows) and it was so marvelous, we are going back this summer for another section. Roper gives exactly the amount of indications needed for a successful trip, although some experience in off-trail mountain-hiking is required. The high route is not trivial, even if no technical climbing is involved. The only thing: for most people it doesn't matter to have a single connected route. It would be nice to have other (shorter) routes in the same style, which are not necessarily connected. Maybe in another book? I don't know of anything comparable.

Great book for the strong willed.......2000-11-28

My girlfriend and I recently took some of Ropers advice on a Mt. Conness Loop 5 day hike in Yosemite. It was an increadible trip. Roper gives just enough hints to get you there but few enough to make it still feel like exploring. Be advised however when he referes a section of your hike as 'adventurous' or 'exciting' he means it. We pushed ourselves to the physical and mental limit on this trip.

practical guide to an undescribable experience.......1999-12-23

This book outlines a magnificent experience following an off-trail, higher version of the Muir Trail through the High Sierra. We have followed most of Roper's route over several years: sometimes we thought we were lost or overwhelmed, but it always turned out fine, and usually excellent. He treads a fine line between complete instructions that would allow no mistakes, and an experience that gives the hiker their own opportunity for route-finding, discovery, and growth. This is one of our favorite books, and we keep an intact copy plus another one torn apart for each journey and sometimes given away to people met along the way who need it. We still travel the trail some of the time, but genuinely value this alternative farther away from the crowds.

I made good use of this book to plan a wonderful cross-country trip in the Sierra. Roper was kind of vague at times, but I never got lost.

The route he described was breath-taking. I intend to use this book to plan next summer's trip.

This book gives a very nice graphical look at many different newpapers from around the world. Not only is it a terrific resource for any designer who is looking for inspiration, but it is also an interesting read for any curious person.

I stopped subscribing to a daily newspaper nearly ten years ago, and if it weren't for the ubiquitous copies of USA TODAY shoved under hotel room doors, my direct experience with contemporary papers would be limited for the most part to leave-behinds on subways and airplane seat pockets. True, I shove coins in the corner box when confronted by a major headline event, but the web is ever beckoning.

That's why I'm surprised how much I enjoyed CONTEMPORARY NEWSPAPER DESIGN. I've long been familiar with John D. Berry's writing on type, of course, but to see him focused on (ahem) yesterday's news didn't at first appeal. But then I took a closer look. Beginning with his insightful initial essay linking technology, economics, and the different needs of commuter train and subway car readers to the practical decisions of design and type, he goes on to illustrate his themes through well-chosen pages from papers around the world, from the most formal to the rawest tabloids, accompanied by a series of thoughtful, insightful, well-written essays from leading practitioners.

While this book is rich enough for the more knowledgeable and demanding reader, it's accessible and interesting enough for those of us with a more casual relationship to the daily newspaper. I hadn't expected it, but I ended up agreeing with Berry's conclusion, that "those who think carefully about the best ways to give us our news, and the entertainment and punditry and advertising that go with it, will do us a service and will probably be in demand for a long time to come."

Professional breeder recommended........2003-10-13

My family has been professionaly breeding & caring for rabbits for over 20 years. I was very disatisfied with the quality of books available for my pet bunny customers and was seriously considering writing my own book. Then I found this book and was thrilled! It is exactly what I would have written myself. I recommend it to everyone who takes home a pet bunny (with the reminder that the author is from England and not to worry about the vaccinations listed for the two diseases that the USA is fortunately not plagued with). Every bunny owner should have this book!

USEFUL! USEFUL! USEFUL!.......2002-07-17

This book is one of my most recommended rabbit books. It is easy to read and gets right to the point. It tells you in plain language why your rabbit does what it does, it gives great tips on what to do and what not to do for your rabbit, and it is packed with useful facts and information on rabbits and bunnies. I can hardly suggest a better book, especially for beginners, than this one. It is perfect if you don't like to read a lot of filler. It tells you just what you need to know.

A great book for pet rabbit owners.......1999-01-26

This book was loaded with house rabbit information and tips on how to train and understand your rabbit. It was also very accurate except for the cedar/pine shavings warning & the statement that nearly every unspayed rabbit gets cancer. Although uterine cancer is common and the risk increases with age it isn't accurate to say every unspayed doe will get it. Otherwise I found the information useful, a much better book than the HRH.

It Truly is the Useful Guide.......2007-06-08

I've been a guinea pig owner and cavy book collector for 20 years. If you're like me, you often check the page count of a book before deciding to buy it. If you do that with this book, you'll miss out on a wonderful slim volume. You'll also find that some long guinea pig books contain no meat, while a shorter one can be packed full. Having a slim volume like this can be great in an emergency, too, because you can more easily find what you're looking for. To help illustrate this book's in depth content, it "diagnosed" three health conditions in my piggies when vets provided inaccurate answers for two conditions (for the third, I found out quickly that the condition was completely benign and didn't require a trip to the vet).

Often it seems that the writing of pet care books gets handed off to staff writers who have no experience in what they're writing about, and a lot of the books thus contain errors that are rather glaring to long-time guinea pig owners. Not so with Ms. Mahoney's book--check out p. 4! Her enthusiasm for the subject matter clearly comes across, as does her expertise. She provides concise information in a fun format. Some readers may be put off by the fact that the book is illustrated not with photos but with comical guinea pig illustrations. To me, this is part of the charm of the book.

When I need a guinea pig book I can count on, this is the one I reach for on the shelf. If I could only have one guinea pig care book, this one would be it. The title of the book says it all!

This book is ideal for children, first time hamster owners, or people looking for basic information. The illustrations are delightful. This book will tell you all you need to know about keeping your hamster (cage, nutrition, ailments), but it is not the be-all and end-all of hamster information. If this is the only hamster book you will ever buy, or you are looking to introduce a child to keeping hamsters, this one is ideal. For someone with higher reading level, or for someone looking more in-depth information, it would be best to pass on this one.

The Forgotten Conquistador.......2003-11-02

Although titled Cabrillo, this book deals mostly deals with the conquest of New Spain. It does this because the facts concerning Cabrillo's life are sparse, but it also provides a picture of what his contemporaries were like. However, the parts directly concerning Cabrillo reveal a man of action, and wisdom. On his voyage up the California coast, he treats the natives that he encounters with more respect than his fellow conquistadors would. If you live in Ca or are just interested in the Age of Exploration this book is worth the couple of hours it takes to read.
