Book Description

Research on the interactions of plants and phytopathogenic fungi has become one of the most interesting and rapidly moving fields in the plant sciences, the findings of which have contributed tremendously to the development of new strategies of plant protection. This book offers insight into the state of present knowledge. Special emphasis is placed on recognition phenomena between plants and fungi, parasitization strategies employed by the phytopathogenic fungi, the action of phytotoxins, the compatibility of pathogens with host plants and the basic resistance of non-host plants as well as cultivar-specific resistance of host plants. Special attention is paid to the gene-for-gene hypothesis for the determination of race-specific resistance, its molecular models and to the nature of race non-specific resistance as well as the population dynamics of plants and the evolution of their basic resistance.

Great tips from a New Orleans native. What you read about in the book matches what you find on the streets once you're there--something that can't always be said about travel guides.

Good detailed book.......2005-06-07

I used this book during my week trip to New Orleans. The best parts about this book are the "best of" lists (e.g. best brunch, best creole restaurant) and the extensive descriptions for hotels, restaurants and bars. However, I found this book a bit text heavy (no photos) and the maps were a bit difficult to understand than Lonely Planet's guide to New Orleans.

The authors of this book blend refreshing frankness, exceptional research and tons of information into an indispensible guide for the Crescent City and a lot of the area around it. It is the book you want if you only want one; the only thing some other guides have on it is map quality. It will help you with the top-to-bottom planning of your trip, as well as greatly assist you once there.

New Orleans for the unintiated.......2002-03-01

My wife and I had never gone anywhere near New Orleans. The Unauthorized guide pulled no punches and gave amusing and thorough advice on subjects we hadn't even considered. It is very useful and we heartily reccommend it to everyone.

An excellent practical guide........2001-01-25

I used this book to guide me through a recent visit to New Orleans and it proved invaluable on numerous ocassions. The writing is tight, informative but not dry, and it covers a lot of issues which other guides fear to address. The section on avoiding crime and scams.."I know where you got those shoes" was invaluable and saved me some money and some strife! The restaurant guide is excellent and the affordability rating very accurate. Using this guide it was easy to get the best for the least at every meal. Pay attention to the guide, especially about "Mothers" and "The Gumbo Shop" and you can't go wrong! The swamp tour info was also a great help and the guide wasn't wrong when it recommended one over the other (we did both). I highly recommend this guide and really...can't praise it enough!

BEFORE YOU BUY............2006-10-18

I only read the customer reviews before buying this book. Before you buy it please note that the entire book is nothing but hundreds of letters from the dog to other dogs or people,etc. I couldn't get through the first 20 pages. I will stick to books with fact and not put the entire English language and all the word meanings in a dog's mind. I'm not saying that there is no benefit to the book, I am just saying that if there is, I couldn't stand reading it long enough. If you like fictional cartoonish kind of stuff, this book will be enjoying to you. I am giving the rating a 3 because I'm sure that some people would enjoy it and also because I can be hard to please. :)

Excellent resource for people who want to understand and communicate with their dogs instead of relying on gimmicks intended merely to control them. Written in a lighthearted, easy to understand style, this little book puts the plain old fun back into having a dog in the family and lets you know that neither you nor your canine child is crazy.

The author likes dogs AND people, and it shows. Go for it!

Not enough information listed - saturated, trans fats and sugars not in here.......2007-08-11

While this book has most of the ingredients we're supposed watching, it's a far cry from being "The Book that counts it all" as it touts on the front cover - it doesn't even have sugar content and the fat content doesn't even tell you how much of it is saturated (or trans). How can you leave those things out and call it complete???? Very disappointing. Did ANYBODY write a real guide that breaks down calories, fats (saturated, etc) cholesterol, carbs, sodium, protein, and fiber??? This is the 4th book I've gotten and NONE are complete. I'm wasting money trying to find just one that REALLY is complete and will be useful.

Outdated! This is important.............2007-01-05

This WAS an excellent reference at one time. Folks, food information needs to be kept up to date. Basically, any food almanac needs to be updated every 2 years at least! Brands change, food are improved, ingredients are added or removed. Foods get better and foods get worse.

This book was comprehensive. Not now. Many of the brands in the book have changed. Some have MUCH less fat, fewer calories, etc.

If they would release a new edition, I would consider it. This is going to be returned to Amazon. There are plenty of others.

My best advice, go to your local book store, peruse and review a few, then buy a CURRENT selection you like best from Amazon since you will likely save money!

My food values reference.......2006-07-20

A great little reference! I have been using it for years. I, and my friends are impressed with its contents.
Ignore the naysayer's comment about redundancy, there are so many brands, I think it is good to get as many as possible in the book even though it may seem repetitive. Most would ignore all the information had they not found their exact brand.
I do wish Ms. Netzer would update the edition with current brands and formulations. I cannot afford (or take a deduction) to keep up with Bowes & Chruch's periodic offerings.

An Awesome, Dependable Encyclopedia of Basic Food Values.......2006-07-12

I too, purchased this volume many years ago. Diet intentions come, and go, but I know that if I want to be aware of how many calories a basic, pork cutlet has in fat, and calories, for example, this is the book I turn to.

No book of this type, can be all things to all people. There are several volumes, covering the new packaged foods-which come and go. And if your going to remain informed, you have to continue to buy the revised volumes. the food pool changes.

For the money-in any case-I believe I'm getting value, in owning seveal volumes. I understand I need to spend a small amt of money to have the vital information I have to have about food, being a diagnosed diabetic for several years now. And I'm excited to know that connie's landmark book is still available, so I can buy a replacement for the orig volume I still have.

I purchased this book many years ago, and have used it continuously! It is the definative resource guide for those of us who want take control of our lives. Know what you're eating, the calories, nutrients, minerals, etc. so that you can make choices for yourself.

You'll probably enjoy this book. It's written for a younger crowd, but if you are like me and can't get enough of your favourite player then this a must have for your collection. It's clear, concise and quite informative.
I'd recommend it for any true Tino fan!
