INTRODUCTION
Tourists pour into Barbados from all over the world, drawn by the delightful climate, the big blue sea and brilliant-white sandy beaches. Many of them rarely stray far from their hotels and guesthouses, but those who make an effort find a proud island scattered with an impressive range of historic sites and, away from the mostly gently rolling landscape, dramatic scenery in hidden caves, cliffs and gullies.
Chief among the island's attractions are its old plantation houses - places like St Nicholas Abbey and Francia - superb botanical gardens at Andromeda and the Flower Forest, and the military forts and signal stations at Gun Hill and Grenade Hall. The capital Bridgetown is a lively place to visit, with an excellent national museum and great nightlife in its bars and clubs, some of them located right on the beach. No other town begins to approach the capital in size, but the small and largely untouristed Speightstown - once a thriving and wealthy port - is a good place to wander for a couple of hours then grab a drink on a terrace overlooking the sea. And, of course, there are the beaches, from the often crowded strips such as Accra Beach and Mullins Bay to tiny but superb patches of palm-fringed sand like Bottom Bay in the southeast.
For more than three centuries Barbados was a British colony and, perhaps unsurprisingly, it retains something of a British feel: the place names, the cricket, horse-racing and polo, Anglican parish churches and even a hilly district known as Scotland. But the Britishness is often exaggerated, for this is a distinctly West Indian country, covered by a patchwork of sugarcane fields and dotted with tiny rum shops, where calypso is the music of choice, flying fish the favoured food, and cultural influences as likely to emanate from America as from Europe.
The people of Barbados, known as Bajans, take great pride in their tiny island of 430 square kilometres and 250,000 people. Literacy is as high as you'll find in any European nation, and Bajans have a deserved reputation for being well-informed and articulate. In writers like George Lamming and calypsonians like the Mighty Gabby the island has produced some of the finest artists in the English-speaking West Indies, while around the world its cricket players - including the great Sir Gary Sobers - have for decades had an influence way out of proportion to the size of their home country.
Tourism of course plays a major part in the country's economy and, in a mature and flourishing democracy, it is obvious that the revenues have been put to good use. The infrastructure is first-rate, with excellent roads, schools and public transport, and there is no sign of the poverty that continues to bedevil some Caribbean islands. Critics of development argue that the island has sold its soul for tourism but, in many ways, Barbados has been a model of how to cope with the new role of tourist mecca suddenly thrust upon many West Indian islands since the 1960s. Development has mostly been pretty discreet, many of the facilities are Bajan-owned, there are no private beaches and no sign of the American fast-food franchises that blight other islands in the region.
Admittedly, there are areas on both the south and west coasts where tourism is utterly dominant and Bajans massively outnumbered by European and American visitors. But, if you want to, it's easy to get away from it. Jump in a bus or a rental car and see the rest of the island: the sugar-growing central parishes, the thinly populated and little-explored north, and the ruggedly beautiful east coast, where you can hike for miles along the beach with only seabirds and the occasional surfer in sight.

Rough Guide is a Little Rough.......2002-01-11
I bought this because the book touted itself as a way to find those out of the way places that the usual travel books don't tell you about.
I have read this book, and I learned nothing new -- no restaurants, accommodations, attractions, etc. that I hadn't known about already. So in this regard it was a disappointment.
However, it is a good basic primer about things Barbadian. There are, however, some good, detailed maps. It is also a "pocket" book, small in size, so you could easily bring it with you to Barbados and use as a reference.
However, I also read Harry P.'s book on Barbados. It is much more thorough and also pretty portable. In my opinion, if you need one book on Barbados, this one probably wouldn't be it.

This is a terrific book. It not only gives a good look at the Hardwick Hall textiles, but also interesting insights into the motivations and prejudices of the Hardwick family at that time.
Great photographs and descritpions give a total view of the textiles and the life and interests of one Elizabethan family.
Elizabethan Treasures - A Treasure.......2000-03-25
I haven't put this book down. The pictures and illustrations are beautiful and the text is interesting and informative. As a member of an historical recreation group I find this book is a "treasure" itself. I have been inspired by its contents and am all ready planning several projects. If you have an interest in the history of embroidery, textiles, or the history of Bess of Hardwick Hall and the Elizabethan world, this is a book you will enjoy!
Brilliant Scholarship and Understanding of Technique.......1998-06-18
Santina Levey is well known and admired in the circles of textile history, research and curatorship. This is a book that will appeal to the historian, the feminist, the needleworker, the restorer and the reader who simply wants to hear a rousing good story about fascinating characters. The plates are excellent. A good read and a good reference all in one. Well Done Ms. Levey, as usual. I eagerly await the catalogue.

Beautifully illustrated reference book on ducks.......2001-04-05
Trevor Boyer's beautiful and accurate illustrations make this book a must-have for anyone researching the physical attributes of various North American waterfowl. John Gooders writes well; the book is an easy and enjoyable read and not at all dry as one might find in other reference books. The only minor problem I have with it is that the birds are not presented in alphabetical order, making it a little tedious to locate them in the table of contents.

Better than expected travelogue.......2001-08-23
The quantity of the photos was unexpected in a travel book which is otherwise rather cheaply produced. They enrich the volume immensely, and the main regret is that they were not in color or of better quality. Although the author's political views and running commentary of opinion about modern French literature is a distraction, overall the volume is a good read and provides an interesting insight into this little known region. As a recent traveler in Transylvania, I found that the book brought back many happy memories.

As there are so many Blue Ridge patterns, I found that I had seven reference books to use in finding names for the patterns I owned. All of the books were useful. If you are serious collector, you will need this book. It is catagorized by the edge types of the plates.
I am going to sell my copy which is NEW as I no longer need it.

The first full-length study for forty years, Arcangelo Corelli offers a much needed reassessment of the seminal composer's life and works. His current historical perspective is still largely conditioned by the opinions of Burney and Hawkins in the late 18th century who saw him as the consolidator of past trends rather than an instigator--a view fully endorsed in the two biographies of the present century. Neither of these writers was truly in a position to make such judgements if only because neither was aware of the contributions of the Roman School to which Corelli emphatically affirmed his allegiance. Extensive archival research over recent years now dispels much of the anecdote and hearsay accumulated over the centuries and makes possible a more balanced evaluation of Corelli's true status in the development of the prime instrumental genres, accounting for his phenomenal success both during his lifetime and in the creation of musical canon in the decades after his death.
