Book Description
Far from being passive elements in the landscape, plants have developed many sophisticated chemical and mechanical means of deterring organisms that seek to prey on them. This volume draws together research from ecology, evolution, agronomy, and plant pathology to produce an ecological genetics perspective on plant resistance in both natural and agricultural systems. By emphasizing the ecological and evolutionary basis of resistance, the book makes an important contribution to the study of how phytophages and plants coevolve.
Plant Resistance to Herbivores and Pathogens not only reviews the literature pertaining to plant resistance from a number of traditionally separate fields but also examines significant questions that will drive future research. Among the topics explored are selection for resistance in plants and for virulence in phytophages; methods for studying natural variation in plant resistance; the factors that maintain intraspecific variation in resistance; and the ecological consequences of within-population genetic variation for herbivorous insects and fungal pathogens.
"A comprehensive review of the theory and information on a large, rapidly growing, and important subject."—Douglas J. Futuyma, State University of New York, Stony Brook

Customer Reviews:
Eating in Hong Kong.......2006-07-04
Last year when we headed out to Hong Kong, I was surprised to see this food guide. Since I am very familiar with Cantonese food, I was interested to see how Hong Kong might differ from New York City, Los Angeles, or Vancouver. This guide was incredibly helpful in describing not only the different foods available in different areas but the customs of eating and what we would see. Where my husband has often considered hotel food to be surprisingly mediocre, in Hong Kong, we were told to go to hotel restaurants. The rent is so high that the restaurant's in hotels essentially are subsidized for their space and therefore some of the best dining experiences can be found in hotels. But I digress. This is not an expensive guide and definitely worth the money for the amount of familiarization it provides.
a helpful and fun book, even if u dont plan adventure-eating.......2002-09-13
... This is an informative and enjoyable book, and lets you delve into Hong Kong culture and eating culture in a way the other books don't. The inside cover has a quick reference of several Cantonese terms in English and Chinese characters, including counting numbers and the very important "ngoh5 hei6 sou3 xig6 ge3" (I am a vegetarian). The book closes with over 50 pages of Cantonese phrases (including "I am ill", "I am pissed", "I want to throw up", and "Thank you, that was delicious"; a glossary of foods and terms; and a Hong Kong culinary dictionary (explains the main ingredients and cooking method). Each transliterated word is coded with the proper intonation, distilled into 6 basic tones. There are 200 beautifully photographed pages of places to eat (from concept to neon to mobile dai pai dong, to street restaurants); a discussion of the banquet; and analyses of staples, such as soups and noodles, rices and meats, and sauces. There are sections on shopping, picnics, utensils, medicinal foods, and "chinese table rules" (no vertical chopsticks please).
Lonely Planet World Food Hong Kong.......2001-09-14
Back in 1991 I set off for a twelve-month global journey. With me I had a few essentials, money, clothes, my wife and a collection of Lonely Planet Travel Guide Books. After a few weeks in India we found that the books were as essential to our survival as food and water. We went on to use the Lonely Plant Guide Books (or the LP as we termed them) though out Asia, Australia, New Zealand, Hawaii, North American, Canada and Mexico. Sometimes our travels would be so fast and furious that we would not read about our next destination until we had arrived the town's bus depot. We grew to love and trust the LP - it never let us down. As you might imagine I was therefore thrilled to receive their latest departure in to travel writing "World Food Hong Kong ". Furiously I dived in to its pages. When I saw that pocket size book was written by Richard Sterling a guy who would - quote " go anywhere and court any danger for the sake of a good meal" I new I would be in for an interesting literary adventure.
Richard Sterling's other titles include; Dining With Headhunters; The Fearless Dinner; and the award wining Travelers' Tale. His much-applauded writing has won him praise from The James Beard Foundation and kudos from the Lowell Thomas awards.
The book 's contents are broken down fourteen chapters -
World Food Hong Kong starts with the essential aspect of understanding the domains cuisine culture. Sterling enlightens us on the island's history, flavors and influences. My learning began. It would seem that Hong Kong's cuisine is a melting pot of the nations tastes with the addition European influences; olive oil, ketchup and asparagus all worked themselves in to the fabric of the island's "local" cooking.
Staples and specialties are next; rice, noodles, tofu, meat, sauces flavorings - the list continues as do the lessons. We all know that in 1295 Marco Polo introduced the noodle to Italy but did you know he made his mark on the Chinese too; he introduced the kiss? The content continues with Drinks, Home Cooking, and Celebrating with Food. Food as Medicine is where I must pause to narrate. Sterling reminds us that the Chinese believe that "food, medicine and health are all part of the same continuum. This is derived from the Chinese philosophy of Yin and Yang, which applies as much to human health as it does to the cosmos. When all in the universe is in its proper balance, harmony reigns. But in a condition of imbalance, we risk ill health, misfortune violence and destruction. Lesson: Seek balance!" If you are seeking balance try the Yin Yang soup or if you are feeling peaky there is always the Lizard soup chicken and cloud fungus.
Seeking knowledge of unusual foods? Then move to the next chapter "The Bold Palate". These are foods for the brave. How about preserved eggs, snake or baby mouse wine? That is right the wine is made by preserving still-suckling baby mice in rice wine. Apparently this is jolly good for rejuvenating the body's organs. For those who have survived the journey thus far normality is ahead. Shopping and Markets, where to Eat and Drink, Understanding the Menu and a modest Recipe Section are all a great read. The where to eat chapter covers the complete dining gambit from the very upmarket Peninsular to low down street food and must try dim sum.
For the gourmet traveler the book finishes with a handy English to Cantonese culinary dictionary a must have for those who want to appear to know their jellyfish from their junk food.
As I close I am relived to say the Lonely Planet does it again, a captivating unpretentious little book, nit just physically but also financially suited for anyone's pocket. - Written By Jeremy Emmerson GobalChefs

DO NOT BUY THIS BOOK!.......2004-03-28
Pease do not buy this book! My avian veterinarian advises that any book published prior to 1995 is so full of inaccuracies that you could actually damage your parrot following suggestions from the old book. DO NOT BUY THIS BOOK! Ask your avian veterinarian to reccommend helpful books to read about parrots!
Out of Date and Dangerous.......2003-09-28
This book contains information that is know to be wrong today. I would never recommend this book to a new parrot owner or anyone else. There are much more informative and accurate books and periodicals on the market. I was extremely disappointed as I thought it would teach me how to teach my parrot to do tricks, etc., but instead it teaches you about "taming" your wild-caught parrot.
Outdated Material.......2001-04-27
This book is very unreliable and possibly offers some disastrous information for a first time Grey owner that does not know any better...the material is very outdated. With all the new information that is available today, this book suggest things that we know now to be harmful--such as clipping only one wing, keeping a bird out in winter, etc...in it's time (1979), this book might have been imformative, as not much was known about Greys then, but is no longer of any use. I was very disappointed. For a more up to date book, with excellent and up to date information, I suggest "Guide to a Well-Bahaved Parrot" by Mattie Sue Athan.
Nice pictures, but some what out dated.......1999-05-08
I have found this book somewhat out dated in it's information. It has color pictures that are nice but some , not all of the training methods are out of date. For the most part the book talks about training wild caught / wild Greys, not hand weaned Greys that now can be bought almost at any pet store. If you are going to be a new African Grey owner, or you own an African Grey keep looking for another book. Wrong information can be harmful to your pet bird. For a good book with good pictures check out "African Grey Parrots" by Annette Wolter. So far out of the three books I read on African Greys this one was the most up to date.
Grossly Outdated Material.......1999-01-04
While this may have been a very good book in 1979, the, avian information gained over the last 20 years makes these older book obsolete, if not down right dangerous. These older books should remain out of print. I would recommend a more recent publication including periodicals such as "Bird Talk" magazine with up to the minute articles from today's (1999) experts. I've kept African Grey's for almost 10 years now.

Necktie Sampler Blocks (love to quilt).......2000-07-08
This is an excellent book for sampler quilting in the traditional sense. I found it to have good instructions and illustrations that are easy to follow; however, if there are ties that are in fragile condition I don't recommend this book as one to follow. I do recommend this book to anyone who desires to cut up neckties for piece quilting.

Great Color Handbook , Better For Brits.......2006-04-03
I bought this book a number of year ago, and it has served me well as a professional garden designer and caregiver. The colorful layout is very nice and easy to use, and few (if any) books have specific information that this one has on the newer, more unusual annuals.
However, the book does have the limitation for those of us in the USA that it is VERY British. All of the care instructions must be tempered by the fact that we are in a more extreme climate. And the book devotes a disproportionately large section to plants like sweet peas which are far more popular there than here. Also, some of the names have the more distinctly British names for crops, like Busy Lizzie for Impatiens.
With the huge variety of different species currently available, don't expect to find all of the most unusual species here, either, like Million Bells. (If it is there, I don't know by what name they are calling it - goes back to the previous paragraph's issues.)
All, in all, it is the best book on the subject I have seen, suitable for beginners and more advanced gardeners. However, it could stand some improvement in another edition by: 1. Having USA care instructions, and 2. Adding the latest bedding plants in the trade.

Book Description
This is a thoroughly illustrated study of the close and continuous relationship between two of modern culture’s central phenomena: the photographic image and travel. Contributing to the growing literature of travel and its representations, the book argues that from its beginnings, photography has played a constitutive role in the formation of travel--comparable in importance to its part in the portrayal of social identity. It shows how, in turn, travel has shaped the use and language of all types of photographic production.
Book Description
Hugh Hamill has sought to understand why this rebellion followed the course it did. He has analyzed the social, economic, intellectual and political temper of New Spain before 1810. The book deals with the Queretaro conspiracy and an examination of the insurrection from the Grito de Dolores of September 16, 1810 to the battle at the Bridge of Calderon on January 17, 1811.

Elegant book on an elegant style.......2003-11-13
The term art Nouveau encompasses a style of architecture, figurative and applied arts that flourished in the last decades of the 19th century and the early part of the 20th. During the final decade of the 19th century Western society was being transformed radically. The automobile, photography and the rise of psychoanalysis were just three elements that contributed to this change.
Costantino's book examines the sources of Art Nouveau in the English Arts & Crafts Movement, in Expressionist painting and in Symbolist poetry. These forms were themselves a reaction to rapid industrial development. Art Nouveau is seen by many as the expression of the last vestiges of a unity in European culture and the continuous interchange of ideas within it. It is a flowing style characterised by a love of detail, pattern and texture.
This work profiles the remarkable figures that gave style and shape to the movement, including René Lalique, Louis Comfort Tiffany, Antonio Gaudí and Charles Rennie Mackintosh. It is a dazzling visual record of the ebullience and breathtaking variety of the objets d'art produced in this lively and elegant era.
My favourite plates here include Edvard Munch's painting Madonna, Fernand Khnopff's The Caresses Of The Sphinx, Gustave Klimt's Female Friends and Music plus a leaded glass window by Louis Comfort Tiffany, Aristide Maillol's tapestry Concert des Femmes and Jules Chéret's 1893 poster for the dancer Loïe Fuller at the Folies Bergère.
The chapters are titled A Changing Society, Introducing A New Style, Graphic Design and Photography, Architecture and Interior design, The Applied Arts, Painting and Sculpture, a Far-Reaching Style. This beautiful book with its more than 300 illustrations concludes with a chronology, a bibliography and an index.
Treatment of the works of Art Nouveau designers and artists.......2000-06-22
Ms. Costantino has produced another well illustrated book on design; however, she strives to cover too much territory in the text while also trying to make the work accessible to those unfamiliar with Art Nouveau.
Ms. Costantino covers Art Nouveau in two chapters: The Applied Arts and Architecture and Interior Design with a concluding chapter summarizing Art Nouveau's influence on contemporary design. In general, the two chapters are organized by treating separately the contributions to Art Nouveau of the major artists and designers of each country. Sometimes the transitions from one designer to the next are abrupt. Subchapter headings would help with these transitions.
Also, Ms. Costantino occasionally references important works: e.g. August Endell's Elvira Studio or Arthur Mackmurdo's Wren's City Churches; without providing illustrations, so essential to understanding their significance. Or in the case of mentioning W. Benson's metalwork being exhibited at the opening of Siegfried Bing's newly renovated store without explaining the importance of Bing or his store, it is easy to see how the significance of the reference could be lost to readers unfamiliar with his role in Art Nouveau.
The work does, however, contain crisp, clear color illustrations of major works of architecture, jewelry, metelwork, and furniture as well as outstanding pieces by lesser know Art Nouveau designers and for this reason alone is a valuable work.
The book is written as an introductory work for those new to Art Nouveau yet Ms. Costantino's desire to be thorough results in occasional lapses to obscure and inadequately explained references which may at times confuse those not familiar with Art Nouveau.
Despite these occasional lapses, Ms. Costantino provides us with excellent descriptions and explaination of the far-reaching influence and significance of the major works of the designers and artists of Art Nouveau. Particularily delightful is the treatment of lessor known though equally important artists and their works.

Book Description
Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla—once a small town priest—is now justly considered the Father of Mexico. He was the first leader to organize an army constituted by people who disagreed with the colonial regime of what once was then New Spain (1521-1810)
This book talks about the military strategies and the political ideology of this catholic priest, viewed from testimonies of three people who took part in the Mexican fight for independence.
These three testimonies, which represent the different political ideologies at the time— that is, conservative, liberal and moderate—will prompt a discussion about the motives which led Hidalgo to rise to arms, as well as the transformation of his political ideals.
