5 out of 5 stars Thorough, comprehensive - indispensible.......2006-09-21

This book is one of the best field guides suited for the boreal forest region of western Canada. It is nearly comprehensive, except for a few species in the Aspen parkland (and perhaps other bordering regions). Includes detailed descriptions of plant uses, as well as similar plant species that may be less common but have the potential to cause confusion. It also is one of the few guides to list a number of moss and lichen species as well as the usual flowering plants.
The only criticisms I have are that, first, some of the photos are not the best quality, and there may or may not be drawings that compensate for the missing information, and, second, the families and orders are not always included (many species are listed under the "Other" category.

A top notch guide book for amateurs and professionals alike.

3 out of 5 stars The Hidden Urban Coat.......2007-06-23

Ray Riegert has devoted a lifetime to travelling the coast of California and finding favorite restaurants, bed & breakfast establishments, and cataloging some of the finer museums and beaches. This book has a little something for everyone, but a lot more if your idea of hidden travel is visiting the large cities of the California Coast. San Francisco receives nearly 100 pages of coverage alone and the clear emphasis is upon urban areas. In these places, Riegert has found some of the best eating establishments, listed the finest gay friendly nightclubs, discussed local parks, and, of particular interest to me, included a number of popular and classy neighborhood bookstores. However, what I consider California's truly hidden coast, its wild and scenic parks and open space areas, receive decidedly less coverage. A few trails are listed, though the trailhead locations are not identified, and only Point Reyes National Seashore gets the full coverage it deserves. On the positive side, Riegert does not neglect the many rural hostels of California where budget travellers can stay often at cheaper rates than at nearby campgrounds.

The reason I am giving this book 3 stars is that it has a lot of text, well over 500 pages, and all of it is in small print. This makes for difficult reading. The lack of photos also detracts a bit from a travel guide. On the whole, I think the author tried to be a little too comprehensive with the book and the result is that while everything was mentioned, almost everything could have used a fuller description. Still, if you want 3 day weekend tours of California's largest cities along with adequate descriptions of nearby smaller tourist destinations (Laguna Beach and La Jolla in southern California, Big Sur, Mendocino, and Eureka to the north) this is a nice book.

Book Description

Over the centuries, many intrepid souls have journeyed to the forbidding south polar regions. In this single volume, Michael H. Rosove tells their stories, voyage by voyage, in language that's accessible to the general reader yet holds the attention of serious polar buffs and scholars.

"An exciting compendium of true tales...Each journey's preparations are described meticulously. Rosove is precise about dates and geography. A lucid, useful reference book on the Antarctic." (The Palm Beach Post)

"An excellent detailed account of the early explorers of the Antarctic continent...Rosove's love for the Antarctic is apparent in his treatment of these exploring pioneers, whose hardships can hardly be imagined today." (John Splettstoesser, geologist and Antarctica expert)

"[Rosove] gives the reader a feeling for the explorers' motivations and the hardships they had to face by using their own words-the words of pioneers who were truly heroes. Highly recommended." (Library Journal)

5 out of 5 stars Palm Beach Post Review by Michael Browning.......2001-07-29

Rosove stays modestly in the background and lets his explorers, who were often excellent prose stylists, speak for themselves. He quotes judiciously from diaries, ships' logs and published accounts of journeys so desperate that explorers ended up eating the rawhide lashings of their sleds, as well as their sled dogs (whose livers contained so much vitamin A that the Australian, Douglas Mawson nearly died of hypervitaminosis, and had to watch as the skin sloughed off his feet in damp shreds). "Here is the sanctuary of sanctuaries, where Nature reveals herself in all her formidable power," wrote one explorer, Jean-Baptiste Charcot. "The man who penetrates his way into these regions feels his soul uplifted." Behind the somewhat mawkish title, lie astonishing feats of bravery, endurance and resourcefulness that make the exploits of modern astronauts seem almost routine. Indeed the parallels between the Antarctic and outer space are eerily similar, with the icebergs resembling asteroid belts that could shatter a ship's hull in a moment, condemning all aboard to death, beyond any hope of rescue. Two of the ships used were actually named Discovery and Challenger. In 1773 the continent was first glimpsed by the British explorer, James Cook, who fully recognized the dangers of the ice: "Surrounded on every side with danger, it was natural for us to wish for day-light. This when it came, served only to increase our apprehensions, by exhibiting to our view, those huge mountains of ice, which in the night, we had passed without seeing." Cook beat a retreat and predicted that "no man will ever venture farther than I have done; and that the lands which may lie to the South will never be explored..." Cook was wrong, of course, but the effort of exploring Antarctica took almost superhuman courage. The explorers came on ships with names like the Erebus, the Terror, the Fram, the Pourquoi Pas?, L'Astrolabe, the Resolution, the Relief and the Aurora. They climbed mountains and volcanoes. They advanced gingerly over chasms spanned by treacherous snow-bridges. They drank snowmelt mixed with dog's blood and slept in caves carved out of ice. They froze to death, starved to death or fell to their deaths in crevasses hundreds of feet deep. They returned to glory, or to oblivion, changed forever by their sojourns on the frozen tip of the planet. Rosove includes the big names like Robert Scott, Roald Amundsen and Ernest Shackleton. But he goes well beyond these giants and includes 20 more explorers, people like James Clark Ross, for whom the Ross Ice Shelf is named; Jean-Baptiste Charcot, who joked that the Antarctic was one place where you never needed to worry that you left your umbrella at home, as it never rained; and Wilhelm Filchner, a German explorer who adapted the auxiliary engine of his ship, the Bjorn, so that its boiler could run off seal blubber and whole penguins, which were flung into the furnace like cordwood (already dead, one hopes). There is a first-day-of-creation quality to the book. We look on as a great region, whose entire existence was unknown 228 years ago, gradually enters the sphere of human knowledge, and is intellectually assimilated, mapped and named. Beyond the people-names, like the Weddell Sea, the Bellingshausen Sea and the Adelie penguin (affectionately named by French explorer Jules S.-C. Dumont d'Urville after his wife), we visit Cape Disappointment, the Danger Islands, Port Circumcision, Deception Island and the Drygalski Ice Tongue. Behind each name lies a curious story, an amusing anecdote, or a history of horror. Over all looms the spell of the continent. "Great God! this is an awful place...!" exclaimed the crestfallen Robert Falcon Scott, who fought his way to the South Pole in 1912, only to find that Roald Amundsen had beaten him by a few days. Scott went on foot. Amundsen used dogs and, when he reached the Pole, shot 24 of them and used them for food on the return trip. Scott never made it back. Others were awestruck by the region's beauty. A member of Shackleton's expedition marveled at the walls of a thousand-foot-wide crevasse, which "were splintered and crumpled, glittering in the sunlight with a million sparklets of light. Towering above were titanic blocks of carven ice. The whole was the wildest, maddest and yet the grandest thing imaginable." The place could drive people insane, or nearly. Scott's decision to pull his sleds with horses and manpower, instead of dogs, proved suicidal. Shackleton spoke of an eery "fourth presence" that seemed to guide his party of three across the mountains and glaciers of South Georgia. He refused to elaborate. "The utter desolation, the awesome, unearthly silence pervading the whole landscape - all this combines to form a scene which is worth many a sacrifice to behold for once, although living alone in such surroundings would undoubtedly end in speedy madness," wrote Henryk Johan Bull, after reaching Antarctica in 1894. Rosove keeps a cool head, writing about this cold, unmooring place. In "Let Heroes Speak" Rosove approaches each story methodically. He gives us the names of all the expedition members, with a bit of background on each. He often follows them beyond the Antarctic into later life, with fascinating results -- Ross, the hero of the great ice shelf, died a recluse and a drunk. Each journey's preparations are described meticulously, the outfitting, the provisions, the stores, the ship. Rosove is precise about dates and geography. The maps at the back are clear and useful. This is consequently a lucid, useful reference book on the Antarctic that reads like an exciting collection of short stories.

5 out of 5 stars Let Heroes Speak.......2000-07-30

This is a fantastic read.

It's about Antarctic explorations beginning with Captain Cook in 1772 through Ernest Shakleton's final effort in 1922, and all those in between -- notably Ross, Scott, Amundsen, Mawson, et al.

The subject matter is interesting, of course, but that's not why I am recommending it. After completing the first couple of chapters, I read on because there was nothing else I could do. It is that riveting. Even where I knew the outcome of a particular expedition in advance, I found my heart racing with anticipation. Frankly, it is one of the most exciting books I have ever read.

Anyone who enjoys true (supported by 26 pages of notes and bibliography) adventure books, along the line of Perfect Storm, Into Thin Air, Ship of Gold, etc. [ this seems to be a popular genre at present ] will love "Let Heroes Speak".

Book Description

Although the Antarctic ice pack and some offshore islands had been sighted and even landed upon briefly as early as the 1820s, it was not until an eccentric Anglo-Norwegian explorer, Carsten F. Borchgrevink, went ashore in 1895 that a human being set foot on the Antarctic continent. Borchgrevink, snubbed by the British establishment, had stolen a march on several planned competing expeditions from Germany and Scandinavia.

Borchgrevink returned to Antarctica in 1899 with a party that was the first to winter over on the continent. Regrettably, bad weather and unscalable mountains limited their forays inland. Borchgrevink's survival was proof that with adequate supplies, the Antarctic winter was survivable, and that with a better geographic position, the enormous unknown of the continent could be investigated.

Borchgrevink galvanized the British geographical authorities who had come to consider polar exploration their exclusive province. Led by Sir Clements Markham of the Royal Geographic Society, the British keenly felt his blow to their national pride delivered by an explorer they regarded as an arrogant upstart. The RGS pushed forward with its plans, and a tragic competition to be the first to reach the South Pole was set in motion between the British and the Scandinavians.

This work is an account of the first tentative human gropings in Antarctica, concentrating on the coalescing of official and popular attitudes that later resulted in the polar races of Robert Falcon Scott and Roald Amundsen, which dominate the story of the "Heroic Era" of Antarctic exploration, from 1901 to 1922.

4 out of 5 stars An Important Prelude.......2001-11-04

T. H. Baughman's Before the Heroes Came (Antartica in the 1890's) is an important look at the era before the Heroic Age of Scott, Amundsen, and Shackleton. This very slim volume shows the build-up of interest in the Antartic and the politican and scientific forces coming together to propel both the noble and the foolish onto the triumph and tragedy that was the Antarctic after the turn of the century. This book is essential for those with a passion for this frozen land but will leave those looking for another arctic adventure story a little cold. The writing can be a little dry at times and the procession of scientists and sailors whirl by a little too quickly. But for those who want to fully understand man's need to explore the Antarctic, this book will prove essential.

5 out of 5 stars A must for all Antarctica buffs!.......1998-05-15

This is a great book, trust me. The Kirkus review is right in giving Baughman praise for his work. Baughman's reasearch is exact and through. The writing style is informative, but is done in a enjoyable narrative that makes the book easy to read. Having studied under Dr. Baughman ( I already got my degree so this ain't puffery) and taken an Antarctic history class from him, I can honestly say that this book is a useful tome for all interested in exploration and students of history alike.

                          Book Description

Mike Shoup has put together hundreds of evocative photographs illustrating creative and imaginative gardens blended with Old Garden Roses. As owner of the Antique Rose Emporium Inc., Mike has created a business that has made these roses available to gardeners through mail order and through three display garden centers. Each center is in itself unique, and distinct from each other, due to their location in three different environments. He uses this experience to profile the best roses for their proven and most excellent garden use.

Among each rose profile, not only are there numerous sumptuous photographs, but also descriptive captions and side-bars that instruct the reader on how to best achieve the results seen. The experienced and novice gardener alike, from the forested East coast to the arid Texas plains, will find this book to be, not only beautiful to look at, but also a delight to read with its straightforward discussion. The book not only expresses the culture and placement of the rose in creative and sometimes whimsical gardens, but also the author's love of gardening in a personal, and at times, humorous way.

4 out of 5 stars Beautiful book for rose lovers in the south.......2000-06-28

This is a valuable book for selecting antique roses that perform well in the southeast and southwestern areas of the U.S. After a brief introduction, chapters are arranged as follows: 1) Vigorous climbers 2) Mannerly climbers 3) Large shrubs 4) Small Shrubs 5) Specialty roses. Each variety is given a two page spread which contains a few paragraphs describing the rose and its habits and numerous photographs. The most valuable aspect are the photographs because they show how the rose grows in different situations, such as on a fence, an arbor, etc. There are close-ups of the rose and views of the entire plant. There is no horticultural advice, so this book can really only be used as a selection device. The photos alone, however, make this a worthy purchase.

                          Book Description

Passalongs are plants that have survived in gardens for decades by being handed from one person to another. These botanical heirlooms, such as flowering almond, blackberry lily, and night-blooming cereus, usually can't be found in neighborhood garden centers; about the only way to obtain a passalong plant is to beg a cutting from the fortunate gardener who has one.

In this lively and sometimes irreverent book (don't miss the chapter on yard art), Steve Bender and Felder Rushing describe 117 such plants, giving particulars on hardiness, size, uses in the garden, and horticultural requirements. They present this information in the informal, chatty, and sometimes humorous manner that your next-door neighbor might use when giving you a cutting of her treasured Confederate rose. And, of course, because they are discussing passalong plants, they note the best method of sharing each plant with other gardeners.

Because you might not spy a banana shrub or sweet pea in your neighborhood, the authors list mail-order sources for the heirloom plants described. They also give tips on how to organize your own plant swap. Although the authors live in and write about the South, many of the plants they discuss will grow elsewhere. from the book Amid the clamor of press releases touting the newest, improved versions of this bulb or that perennial, what keeps people interested in old-fashioned plants? Nostalgia, for one thing. It's hard not to feel a special fondness for that Confederate rose, night-blooming cereus, or alstroemeria lovingly tended by your grandmother when you were a child. Such heirloom plants evoke memories of your first garden, of relatives and neighbors that have since passed on, of prized bushes you accidentally annihilated with your bicycle. Recall the time you first received a particular plant, and you'll recall the person who gave it to you.

This is the best gardening book I own. It's so good, I've bought it for gifts over and over and over again. All of the plants listed are fabulous, the profiles are just plain funny, and all in all, the book is inspiring. Steve Bender and Felder Rushing are a great team- their essays on the plants feel like sitting down with a good gardening friend. They teach a lot, but not in a pedantic way. I can't recommend this book enough- I'd give it ten stars if I could.

4 out of 5 stars This book will have you learning about local southern plants!.......2005-11-28

Unlike other members of my family. I have not inherited the green thumb. This book is fabulous if you live in the south. This book lets you know which plants can be started from others. Propagating plants either from cuttings or seeds can help you have a good deal of money.

This book is mostly geared for those of us who live in the south. While there are other plants mentioned, I think you would be better served if you live in the south. I like that this book broke plants down into types, and areas that they typically do best in. This way your not having to play any guessing games about what may grow best in your area.

If you are fond of of heirloom plants, this book is ideal for you, as it has many plants that are of older stock. It also gives you ideas for sources as well as sources for these older variety of plants. This book also tells you how to propigate the plants and make more!

This is a great resource. My only personal drawback is that while their are pictures for 80% or more of what is mentioned in the book. I am not plant savvy and when their isn't a picture, I have no idea what plant they are talking about. Do not let that stop you though, this is a great resource, and my garden will benefit from this book greatly!

This book was delightful in many respects. I learned alot about plants that have been around forever and "shared" with other plant lovers! I will keep this book to read and re-read. Also liked the pictures and especially the stories.

Wrote with Southern charm, Felder Rushing's and Steve Bender's "Passalong Plants" is chocked full of humor and downhome anecdotes on how and why all gardeners should "share the fun and joy" of passing along a favorite flower or plant. That boils down to mean giving to others what the soil has gave to you! A fine book that will add lots of useful and practical gardening information to any home gardener's bookshelf.

You will enjoy the many discoveries this book has to offer and it is beautifully illustrated with a color photograph and planting recommendations for every plant. I cannot recommend a better book for a Houston or Gulf Coast gardener, either expert or new comer, and I have read them all! It focuses on plants that truly do well HERE. It skips azaleas, hybrid roses, tulips and all the other fussy plants pushed by the local nurseries do great anywhere but here. Instead it offers beautiful and underused (and for the most part - EASY) alternatives.
