Another first-rate selection by Kerper.......2006-08-01

Barrie Kerper says she has been keeping travel files in cardboard cartons for many years: cuttings, clippings, articles, leaflets. Here she selects from what she has on Greece and the result is dynamite but instead of exploding, it delights and impresses. The book includes material on Athens, the island of the Aegean, and the Poeloponnese. Some selections were written by experienced veterans in the art of travel writing (Robert Kaplan, Patricia Storace)and others by less important but still excellent writers. My own favorite section is the one about the Islands, which includes articles on Patmos, Rhodes, Chios and others. Kerper accompanies each selction with a brief piece about its author and the genesis of the article. The book also contains several carefully annotated bibliographies, presumably prepared by also by Kerper. A fine book.

This is a must read for all animal lover's who will find it difficult to put this book down once they start reading it. It has humor and pathos and it will bring you into the mindset of this nature and animal lover who spins one tale after another that will keep you turning each page until you reach the finish. A delightful book that I would highly recommend for all ages to read and be inspired by.
Hollywood producers would be missing a good bet if they did not find material for a wonderful family movie based on this marvelous book.

Readers of all ages are going to adore Kostro's animal memories. His tales are often humorous, but also heart breaking. I was very entertained with his childhood fascination of picking on his older sister, since this is a theme that showed up in another of his books. I suspect the author is a bit mischievous? Ed Kostro's apparent harmony with nature and creatures will charm any animal lover! Especially meaningful is chapter 40, titled 'I Cry'. You really spoke to my heart on this one, Ed. Thank you.

High Praise for a wonderful book!!!.......2005-07-31

`Curious creatures, wondrous waifs - my life with animals' by Ed Kostro is a wonderful book that takes the reader along the highway of Ed's life. Beginning with Ed's earliest memory at the age of three, Ed recalls each animal that made an impact on his life and made him into the caring, animal advocate that he is today.

Shaped by the careful nurturing of his grandmother's interests of all living things, Ed grew up in a household filled with grandmothers, their dogs, and a secret snake in the basement kept as a pet.

This book will charm the reader and encourage a deep love and respect for all God's creatures. St. Francis of Assisi's Prayer for Animals (taken from Ed's book) sums it up:

`God, Our Heavenly Father, You created the world to serve humanity's needs, and to lead us to You. By our own fault, we have lost the beautiful relationship we once had with all Your creatures. Help us to see that by restoring our relationship with You, we will restore it with all animals. Give us the grace to see all animals as gifts from You, and to treat these animals with respect.'

I felt truly blessed to have read Ed's book.

A Delightful Read!.......2005-06-22

What a wonderful, delightful book this is. Author Ed Kostro shares his life and his passion for our fellow earth dwellers in his writing and does a very fine job of it.
In this book we journey with the author from the days of his youth to the present. He shares with us touching stories of family life that always include the antics of wonderful pets and other animal encounters. He learns at an early age that he has a special relationship with nature's creatures.
We share in the faithfulness of several beloved dogs, giggle at the humor of some and dab a tear at the loss of others. One of my favorite stories was"Guard Dog or Dinner For Two."
In this story Mr. Kostro is living in Southern Italy with his wife and dog Sport. Unfortunately, it seems the local people did not look at dogs as companions, but dinner. Although I am sure I would have been just as upset about this as our author was; I could not help but stifle a giggle as he told the challenges he encountered in this new land with it's strange customs, keeping his beloved dog out of the cooking pot.
All in all this was a very pleasant read and a great reminder that all life on this planet deserves our respect. Great book for animal lovers and for those who wonder why we love them so much.

Rebeccasreads recommends CURIOUS CREATURES WONDROUS WAIFS as an unabashadly sentimental collection of memories & writings from the author's life, so there are often repeated segments, written at a meandering pace. Still, there is a boyish, gladsome, if unedited charm to the whole.

For all animal-lovers to keep beside your bed for a restful & entertaining read before you turn the light out, it will stir memories of the animals you too have known & loved.

Recent estimates by The World Health Organisation and The World Bank indicate that throughout the world each and every year more than 800,000 persons die as a consequence of suicide. This means that the death toll of suicide equals and in many countries even exceeds that of road traffic accidents. In addition to the number of suicidal deaths, at least ten times as many persons make non-fatal attempts to take their lives or harm themselves, often seriously enough to require medical attention and not infrequently resulting in irreversible disability. But still these figures inadequately describe the magnitude of human loss and suffering caused by suicide. If one assumes that for every suicidal death there are at least five persons whose lives are profoundly and often for many years affected by the event -emotionally, socially and economically-, by the event, then each year millions of survivor-victims are added to the tens of millions already `out there'. Hence, suicide is an ever-recurring catastrophe of the first degree. It is not a phenomenon that first and foremost forms a dubious privilege of the so-called highly developed countries. Suicide also occurs in the developing countries and there is more than suggestive evidence that in several of these countries the suicide rate equals or even surpasses the highest national rates shown by offical statistics. It follows that suicide is an extremely important public health problem. It is, however, a problem that is painfully neglected. Throughout the world, resources devoted to the prevention of suicide are only a tiny fraction of those devoted to the prevention of comparable problems, such as road traffic accidents, or to problems of lesser magnitude, at least in the industrialized countries, such as HIV-infection and Aids. This volume, produced under the supervision and auspices of the World Health Organization, brings together for the first time information on epidemiological, clinical and preventive intervention aspects regarding suicide that have global significance and applicability. After a detailed description of the epidemiology of suicide and suicidal behaviour on an international scale, a large part of the book is devoted to the `how-to's' of developing and organizing suicide prevention programs and services in different national and cultural settings, both at clinical and community level. In addition, a wealth of practical information for health care workers and volunteers is provided on how to evaluate and deal with acute suicide risk. Examples of successful preventive intervention programs and projects, from the developed as well as the developing world, are provided. Legal and ethical problems involved in suicide prevention are also discussed. Finally, both cultural and biological aspects of suicidal behaviour, as well as their clinical-practice relevance, are examined.

Love Carried Me home by: Joy Miller was a good book to read if you want to learn about the Holocaust. The stories of sixteen women that survived the concentration camp Aschuwitz. This book described the stories of the women in women to show people how their lives and other people's lives were during the Holocaust. All of the stories in to book are explained very well and I think it was a good idea to write a book about the women in the Holocaust because not many books tell about women's lives. The lives of the women in this book are sad but also happy because of them surviving. I liked this book and I am glad I chose to read it.

Superficial and disappointing.......2005-09-08

I was looking forward to reading this book which I expected to add new insights into some different ways that women survived Auschwitz. From some of the excerpts I had read, I felt that this book might offer a deeper more emotional introspection of the women survivors that were interviewed. Unfortunately, this book was superficial, the personal stories were outlined with little detail, and included little emotional material. Coping methods of survivors were indicated, but it was difficult to understand how the author's conclusions were reached. Don't waste your money.

Love Carried Me Home.......2000-11-26

What a masterful work by Dr. Miller! This book chronicles the incredible strength and perseverence of 16 women for whom the worst imaginable atrocities occurred. I recall Holocaust studies in college, and the stories of women were largely ignored. I applaud this effort to let their stories be heard and their message of strength to be passed on.

A Must Read.......2000-10-24

A tender, loving tribute to 16 women who survived Auschwitz! It shows the coping methods used by these wonderful ladies who survived and had the courage to share their stories with the world. We must remember what they say....so that nothing like this will ever, ever happen again! Even the picture on the cover is a moving statement with the colors and barbed wires which carries through at the beginning of each chapter. Dr. Miller has written a book that is a "must read" for all who have trouble coping.....what a lesson they can learn from this book!

"Voices" Finally Heard.......2000-10-23

As a person who loves words and frequently employs them to express my feelings, thoughts and emotions, I was deeply moved by the "voices" of these women. To say that this book is powerful is not strong enough. This book does more than record the testimonies of these 16 women regarding their experiences in concerntration camps---it serves as insight into the very nature of being a woman. This is the first time I have ever read about the Holocaust from a woman's perspective. Joy Miller was right in writing this book and in giving women a chance to be heard. To say that I "enjoyed" reading this books sounds flippant, but it is not the experiences of these women I enjoyed reading about (they were difficult to take)---but the women themselves---their courage, their strenghth and their creativity. Miller should be very proud of this contribution in keeping the message alive and in such a unique form. It is truly a work of art and a must read for anyone wishing to view a glimpse into the emotional strenghths of women.
