Good choice for ideas for kids!.......2003-04-01

Purchased this book hoping to find kid friendly eats and places to see in Paris. Was a good starting point. My son actually loved a few of the adult things as well. Suggest you try a tour of the area with a one of the red double decker buses for the older kids.

First thing to pack.......2002-09-12

This is a real gem of a book. We used it extensively in planning a trip to Paris with our 9 year old son, and it was amongst the first things packed. The information is useful, the size is wholly convenient. Nothing glossy, no photos, no pictures at all. I have borrowed all the glossy stuff from the library to read ahead of time, and anything useful have put as margin notes in THIS book, because this is the one I plan to have along. It tells you how to get to each place, opening hours, what to see and do there. Includes information on attractions especially for kids, as well as all the conventional tourist sites, museums etc, emphasising the aspects that are most likely to appeal to kids. It tells you which parks in Paris kids can run and play on grass - that alone has to be worth its weight in gold.

If you are a first-time visitor to Paris you may feel more comfortable having a good, conventional guide book along as well, but if you don't need the basics (such as how to buy a metro ticket etc) AND you have children along with you, I reckon you'll want to have this book above all others.

On a recent trip to Paris with my 5 1/2 yr old daughter, I must have referred to this book about a 100 times. Its really geared to what children like, is easy read, well-indexed, and has all the pertinents, like when one can rent sail boats at the Jardin des Tuileries.

Best take along guide for kids and adults........2001-11-15

This was the most helpful informative of all the books purchased or check out at the library. This small book and a good map got us through Paris each day. We never went any where without it, and it is small enough not to be bothersome.

Predicting the Future--From a Kid's Point of View.......2005-05-03

Now that the 21st century is well on the way, I've found myself being drawn to books written in the 20th century talking about the 21st century. I find it both amusing and fascinating to see what authors were writing and predicting about "the future." COUNTDOWN TO 2000 is one such book, but written for kids. The book is written kind of as a prediction book/scrapbook combo and includes four major sections.

The first section explains where the word millennium came from, how the modern calendar came to be, and some suggestions on creating a time capsule. The second section is all about predictions. Predictions about the end of the world, robots, space exploration, and the environment. There's also a sections about science fiction and about what life was like around the year 999. The third section is also about predictions, but more on a personal level: the types of food people will eat, the clothes people will wear, how people will shop, the types of jobs, and how people will entertain themselves. The final section of the book is the major scrapbook feature and provides a place where people can record all sorts of events for the next 6 years (1996-2001): height, weight, friends, favorites songs, favorite teachers, favorite movies, etc.

I've always found the majority of children's prediction books to be funny. For example, the clothing section in COUNTDOWN TO 2000 makes the prediction that in the new millennium "space-age-fashion" (sterile white clothing with shiny metal)will be all the rage. This is a prediction that I have read in books for the past twenty years and it has yet to come to pass. Of course, there are some predictions made in the book that have become a reality. Back in 1996 the Internet had just started to enter the public mainstream and the book predicts that the Internet will play a huge role in the future and commands readers to "get prepared--the internet is coming to you." That's a prediction that did become a reality because most kids today can't imagine life without the Internet.

Besides the predictions and some simple games, COUNTDOWN TO 2000 also includes several interesting tidbits of information. For example, in 1957 a "House of the Future" was built at Disneyland that was made totally from plastic. Ten years later when the house was to be demolished for a new exhibit--the wrecking ball bounced off the surface and the house had to be taken apart by hand.

Overall, I enjoyed reading COUNTDOWN TO 2000. Though the book offers some educational and entertainment value, most kids won't have much interest, except those that will be amused by the book's (often hilarious) predictions.

Colin McPhee was a performer, writer, and pioneer among Western composers in turning to Asia for inspiration. A close friend of Aaron Copland, Carlos Chavez, Henry Cowell, and Virgil Thomson, he played a vital role in new music activities in New York in the 1920s, but his most important accomplishments came from his devotion to the music of Bali. Carol Oja's Colin McPhee: Composer in Two Worlds traces his life, his influences on fellow musicians, and the profound experience of a composer striving to comprehend an entirely new musical language.

After hearing rare recordings of the Balinese gamelan--a percussion orchestra with delicately layered textures and clangorous sounds--McPhee traveled to Bali and worked closely with such Western anthropologists as Margaret Mead and Gregory Bateson. The island may also have appealed to him because of its relatively open attitude toward homosexuality.

Gay by inclination, he nevertheless married anthropologist Jane Belo and built a native-style house on the island where they lived for most of the 1930s. During this time, McPhee became a devoted and meticulous chronicler of Balinese musical culture, and his Music of Bali remains a classic in ethnomusicology. Beginning in the mid-1930s, his own compositions became an imaginative hybrid of Balinese and Western music, anticipating the later work of such figures as John Cage, Lou Harrison, and Steve Reich.

Finally back in print, Carol Oja's account of McPhee's unconventional life and work evokes key issues in composition and ethnomusicology, sure to be of interest to scholars, musicians or anyone interested in 20th century American or Balinese music.
