Uncommonly Lovely Common Wildflower.......2004-01-10
My first thought is "How does someone find a publisher for an entire book on the subject of just one rather common weed?" I am glad someone thought it was a good idea because this is a lovely and interesting book.
This book is intended for children in grades 3 through 5 but it is also a very good introduction into plant anatomy, sexuality and life cycle that could benefit any amateur gardener who may not have much in the way of science behind his interest in the hobby.
The many colored photographs throughout the book are the best part but the informative text may not truly hold the attention of young school children. If you want to inspire a budding botanist this book will be a helpful aid but it should be used in conjunction with hands on experience.
The history of the plant's folk name is explained at the beginning of the book. The book concludes with an easy experiment that children can conduct that shows one reason that the Queen Anne's Lace plant is so prolific. I was hoping the book might include more landscape photographs but it only has individual photographs of single flower heads or individual parts of a flower head, leaf, root or stem. It is an easy science book not a coffee table book. I was also hoping there might be some easy craft ideas for kids that use the Queen Anne's Lace flowers (my grandma taught me several) but again, I discovered that this is not part of the scope of this book.
I recommend this book but only to someone who is really in love with this uncommonly lovely common plant or someone who wants to teach kids about plant physiology. Elementary school Science teachers will probably get the most out of it, especially if they make it part of a field trip where kids can see the living flowers up close for themselves.

Parsleys, Fennels, and Queen Anne's Lace is the gardener's introduction to the characteristics, cultivation, and history of one of the most distinctive families of the plant kingdom. These plants were well known to the Greeks and Romans — it was the juice of a member of the umbel family that Socrates was forced to drink — and the family was the first to be studied as such botanically, by Robert Morison in 1672. Yet even today the many herbs and ornamentals of this family are not as well known or appreciated as they should be. The definitive book on umbels.......2007-09-17
One can't help but make more notice of plants in the umbel family after reading Barbara Perry Lawton's book. I dipped into it after finding it on the shelf at my local botanic garden's shop. In no time I was drawn into the world of parsley and its relatives by her engaging and conversational writing style. I had no idea previously of the relationship of the Apiacea to humankind. Or that carrots are x-rated (check out Daucus carota var. sativa).
The usefulness of Apiaceae to me as a home gardener and horticultural educator is in the many colors, textures and forms they add to our borders. Less desirable are the weedy species and those "black sheep" (goutweed is the worst!) are given needed attention as well. Others readers will appreciate the umbel's usefulness in table arrangements and, of course, cooking. One can also stir up a poisonous stew from this group of plants as one learns from the many interesting tales Mrs. Lawton weaves into her discussions. The book discusses endangered plants within these species and the many species that draw beneficial insects to the garden. The illustrations from treasured old herbals are as revealing as the modern-day photos in the book.
This book is fun to read as well as being an important and detailed reference work.
Needed Addition.......2007-07-17
What a delight--an authoritive but altogether readable book about an understudied, underpublicized, underappreciated, and undercultivated plant family. Lawton does it all, but perhaps most helpful is her identification of Umbel family plants that will flourish in and embellish any garden. Kudos to Timber Press for publishing this book, and to Lawton for writing it.

A wonderful guide full of practical hints for travel in the Amazon, the Pantanal and the Neotropics in general. John Coningham is an experienced guide, wonderful naturalist, ex-soldier, firearms expert, horseman, boatman, etc., etc. and this book is the next best thing to going to the Pantanal and talking to him, While he has a wonderful knowledge of the flora and fauna of Brazil, this book is neither your typical natural history guide nor armchair adventure tale. A courtroom drama with a twist.......2003-11-17
This book is written from a point of view of Clarissa - a woman standing trila for murdering her ex-lover. The problem is ... she can't remember it. Having amnesia after a car-wreck (which happened a cople of hours after the estimated time of the murder), she is herself questioning her own guilt.
Allthough amnesia as a plot device was horribly overused in books, movies and TV, it works good here. The court scenes are solid and sometimes brilliant.
The characters of the novel are lifelike, and the relationships between Clarissa, her lawyers and her inmates could keep your interest even without the mystery part of the novel.
This may be not as strong as "Presumed Innocent", but definetly one of the strongest debute legal thrillers since then.
Fans of Scott Turow should check out this book.

This is a dandy mystery. One of the best I've read in a long while.

I learned more from this particular book in the first 30 minutes of reading it, than I did from three other resources on Marbling. I found answers in this book, I couldn't find anywhere else. Great photos of completed works and very simplifed instructions. One section focuses entirely on Preparing to Marble, tools for marbling, set-up, and furthermore is sectioned off by acrylics, watercolor, oil paints and tempera paints. Another section focuses on, patterns, tech. problems, special techniques, marbling on fabrics and resources. I would recommend this book first and foremost before all others.

I found this book at the library and searched everywhere for it. Thanks for carrying it. It has all the info I need to start marbling on paper which is an old art form and hard to find info and supplies for.
Practical and readable.......2004-06-15
This is a great introduction to paper marbling - the technique that produces those wonderful swirls, feathery patterns, and colored speckles on paper.
The book is divided very roughly into three parts. The first gives clear recipes and techniques for preparing the marbling media and paints, for choosing and preparing the paper or fabric, and for creating the patterns. The authors are sensitive to the needs of the home crafter, and generally avoid exotic materials and tools. The second part of the book is a visual catalog of marbled patterns with directions for making them yourself. The final section of the book suggests uses for the marbled paper or fabric - boxes, books, and lots of other applications.
This is a how-to book, so leaves without discussion of some topics. There's not a lot of historical discussion, even though marbling has been used for hundreds of years. It doesn't cover more advanced applications, including marbling the edges a book's block of pages. This is for the starting crafter, though, not for professionals or academicians.
This is an enjoyable intro to a very enjoyable craft. If you want to get started in marbling, I'd suggest starting here.
