This is not a travel book, nor a source for ethnographic material, nor a biography, yet, it is all these. This is an excellent book. I had read Che's "Motorcycle Diaries" and followed it with Symmes book. Great pairing. Before and after. What a very cool thing to do..follow in Che's dust. This is funny, interesting and thoroughly enjoyable.

As a motorcyclist and adventure tourer, I found this book fascinating and well written. Definitely one of the best books of the genres, a fascinating blend of travel, adventure, political history, geography. The author is engaging and witty, open, and spellbinding.

The Perfect Book.......2005-08-28

I read this book while on a trip to Peru, and I had to force myself to read more slowly so Symmes wouldn't reach my destinations before me. This was the perfect book for my trip. It's an absorbing and amusing travelogue, but Symmes also writes very knowingly and clearly about the evolution of Che Guevara and recent Latin American politics.It gave me a much broader view of the places I visited, and it was also the follow-up I needed after seeing the movie version of Motorcycle Diaries. As a matter of fact, Chasing Che should be on every book shelf that holds Motorcycle Diaries, and it should be required reading for every teenager who wears a Che t-shirt. In honor of Symmes and his quest, I even bought a pack of El Che cigarillos (Quien abre el camino es el grupo de vanguardia, los mejores entre los buenos)in Cusco. Thanks again, Patrick. Your book sure beat Fodor's.

Great, creative storytelling.......2005-08-15

Patrick Symmes is not the first to come up with the idea of retracing the path to gain perspective, but he does do an excellent job of taking the reader along for the ride. Though speculative at times, Symmes always separates his opinion from historical fact... a stumbling point of other's in this genre. The book is charming and flows easily; he even turned me onto the epic book by Jon Anderson (Che)--->which is also very good.

I read this book 5 years ago and still remember to recommend it when the topic of travel books/history pops up... all have come back to thank me for turning them on to this hidden treasure. Hope you like the journey!

PS- has the strange effect of making you want to purchase and old motorcycle and just ride.... b careful!!

10,000 Miles In 300 Pages.......2005-06-11

Symmes is a talented writer and good traveler, but if you're looking for the details of Che's revolution this book is not the place. Also, don't apply if you're looking for a super-detailed description of Che's life and his travels (Jon Lee Anderson is a good place for that). However, what "Chasing Che" does excellently portray is the transformation every genuine traveler experiences on a long journey- from being overwhelmed and excited at the beginning, to forgetting what month it is and becoming seasoned by the Extraordinary at every bend of the road. The book also shows us that very, very few of us have the inclination to "Be Like Che", even when exposed to the same conditions of poverty and exploitation that Che was decades ago. Whatever Symmes took home from the journey (an incredible amount I'm sure, especially when compared to those of us placated by wage slavery and T.V.) is totally unlike Che's own transformation, which is described at the end of his own travel diary when he hints at his future armed revolutionary path. What Symmes provides us with is not so much fodder for revolution, but with the important inspiration to go out and know for ourselves the worlds that previously have only been described to us in books.

I use this book for my design classes. It is very complete and easy to read, but I feel it should have more images to illustrate the text. Great theoretics but I wish for more parctical imput. Great for freshman design students.

I saw this book online and just HAD to buy it. I'm soo happy I did too because now ER Vet is like my dream job. I carry this book everywhere with me, I'm not even kidding. And it's not just the job that's so appealing to me. It's the book too. I love all the colors and how some pictures take up whole pages and you really feel like you're getting a first-hand look at what it's like to work in the animal ER. Plus, the book tells you what an average day is like for ER Vets, Vet Techs, and in an animal emergency hospital in general. It gives you background information on lots of animals and teaches you tips to help you at home with your own animals. I'm not joking when I say this book is pretty much perfect.

Subbing at an elementary library earlier this month I came across this marvelous book on the shelving cart. I bet it is not on the shelf very often.

Kids love books about their favorite animals. Books on dog and cat breeds fly off the shelves. Put a puppy on the cover and there is instant interest.

Veterinary medicine is a career that is intriguing to many children. The photography shines in this book and invites the reader into a state of the art emergency care facility. There are photos of surgery that are detailed but not gruesome. The images of animals being cushioned with pillows and blankets are particularly comforting to young pet owners. Kind and caring professionals offer insight into their work at the ER.

The book also deals with the loss of a pet. Lucy is a ball python who escaped from her bag and got behind the dash of her owner's car. Despite the vet's attempts to revive the snake Lucy dies from hypothermia. Her owner describes his feelings of sadness and loss.

There are interesting insets, including abbreviations and terminology the doctors use (example HBC is hit by car) and human foods that are dangerous to animals.

State reading assessments use nonfiction selections to test student reading ability. This would be an excellent choice to model nonfiction reading. Young readers will also pick this one up and pore over every word on their own.

Great information about the world of emergency vets for adults as well as kids. Well-written with excellent photos and a section on dealing with the death of a pet. Great gift for anyone considering the profession.

I loved this book. I thought it was well written and had a lot of useful information. I thought that each event was independent in its own way. I never read the same thing over again and if it was the same symptoms they would be taken care of better from past experiences. In all, this is my favorite book. I am very happy that I read this book it has given me great knowledge about animals that I will almost always remember. Some parts were funny and cute, but others were serious and possibly fatal. I love Lillian Roberts, she writes from her point of view as a vet and her dealings with all the different people and animals. Their personalities, attitudes, expectations, and fears.

Dr. Roberts states in her excellent book, "I'm no James Herriot." But this book is every bit as good as any of his. It produces a wide range of emotions and effects: laughter, tears, suspense and goosebumps. I love the way Dr. Roberts alternates between clinic stories and personal history. This book gives the reader a view into what a vet has to deal with, from both the animal and the human sides. It will help readers become more aware of the firm realities of what it's like to be a veterinarian. I plan to buy more copies of the book and give them to my dogs' vets. Congratulations to Dr. Roberts on an excellent job!

Fact or Fiction?.......2003-05-14

This book may be entertaining to those unfamiliar with Animal Planet's popular Emergency Vets TV program, but somewhat confusing to those who are faithful fans of the show. The plot revolves around the adventures of a fictional young woman named Megan, who is supposedly the niece of the real Dr. Robert Taylor, owner of Alameda East Veterinary Clinic in Colorado, where the E-Vets series is filmed. Megan gets to spend the summer working at the clinic, interacting with the series' veterinarians as well as a number of fictional characters, such as her friend Rick. Many of their escapades are highly improbable, and much misinformation is provided about both the vets and the clinic; the book's inevitable happily-ever-after ending, for example, suggests a lack of security at Alameda East that surely does not exist. The problem with the book is that it is neither fact nor fiction, but reads more like a teenager's fantasy, based on her favorite TV show. Marino would have done better by her young readers had she written either a real novel or a real work of non-fiction.

This book is great. If I could rate it 1-100 I'd give it 100. Maybe even more. It is about a girl, named Meagan, who wants to be a vet and is so excited when her dad says she is going to intern at an animal hospital. Her Uncle Bob works there. He's Dr. Robert Taylor from the show "Emergency Vets". She has a fun-filled summer with her cousins Allsion and Tommy -- Dr. Taylor's kids. She goes to a party at the zoo at night. It is called the Do At The Zoo. She goes with her friend Rick. She has a delightful six weeks including injuries, dog-napping and a whole lot of talking parrots. You'll have fun reading this story.

This work provides a significant interpretative key to Job 28 within the most perplexing section of the book (Job 22-31). Job 28 is in contradictory juxtaposition with other sayings of Job. Black Vulgar Poetry Collected in Prison.......2000-06-06

This is one of the seminal works in the study of dirty jokes and poetry as folklore. The author collected his "specimens" largely among incarcerated criminals. The collection is well worth while, but the overall work is less comprehensive and not as humorous as the studies by Roger Abrahams, Darrel Cumber Dance and Vance Randolph or, for that matter, the performance art of Rudy Ray Moore. Still for anyone hoping to collect a comprehensive library, this work cannot be omitted and ought to be purchased.

My kids turned me on to this book. The book itself is a lot of fun, but the tape brings it to life. The late Raul Julia creates a captivating narrative of the book, and the story is uniquely entertaining. This one is a bargain at twice the price!
