    Book Description

Rhizoctonia Species: Taxonomy, Molecular Biology, Ecology, Pathology and Control, written by the world's most reputable experts in their respective fields of Rhizoctonia research, summarizes years of research in the various aspects of the ubiquitous complex group of soil-borne fungi belonging to the anamorph genus Rhizoctonia. Species of Rhizoctonia worldwide cause economically important diseases on most of the world's important plants such as cereals, potato, cotton, sugarbeet, vegetables, ornamentals and trees in nurseries.
The subject reviews covered in the book include classic as well as modern approaches to Rhizoctonia research in: Taxonomy and Evolution, Genetics and Pathogenicity, Plant-Rhizoctonia Interactions, Ecology, Population and Disease Dynamics, Disease Occurrence and Management in Various Crops, Cultural Control, Biological Control, Germplasm for Resistance, Chemical and Integrated Control Strategies. It aims to be the standard reference source book on Rhizoctonia for the next decade or more, just as Parmeter et al. (1970) has been in the past. It will be an important publication for Rhizoctonia investigators, plant pathologists, students, extension specialists, crop producers and companies dealing with plant disease control.

          Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars excellent veterinary reference.......2007-05-13

I have the previous edition of "the pink book", and knowledge has advanced in these species such that I desperately needed the new edition. An excellent text that is a must have if you see small mammal patients.

4 out of 5 stars Very Helpful Book.......2006-04-16

I got this book so I can better understand what the heck the vet was telling me about two of my ferrets. It is a reall good resouce for pet owners to learn more about the different medical conditions that will come up with owning a ferret. However, be warned!.... This book explains thing in terminology that a vet or a vet tech will understand. It is not a book for the average person per se, but it did help me ask the right questions and to be better informed. One vet I talked to uses this book as a reference quite often. I enjoyed going through this book and it was very educational.

5 out of 5 stars Ferret Owner ** Must Have ** YOU are responsible for providing the best care........2005-10-22

As a ferret owner, you have the responsibility to know what diseases or cancers your ferret could get, and for making sure they get the proper treatment as soon as possible. Early diagnosis is the key. This is one of the best books you will find and it's more than worth the money invested. Every ferret owner should have a personal copy. Check with your vet to see if they have a copy as well, this is an awesome Christmas present. Read! Highlight! Consult! Together, you can extend the life of your ferret.

5 out of 5 stars The best in this area.......2003-07-27

This is that kind of book , that helps you to increase your knowledgement.
For every veterinary and student who work with Ferrets, Rabbits, or Rodents.

5 out of 5 stars THE BEST book on this subject.......1999-12-19

This book is the absolute best resource on the medicine of these species. The book is easy to follow and find specific information as necessary. Most illustrations are quite useful, although in black and white. The book is organized mostly by taxonomic groups. However, the book seems to repeat itself in some chapters as well as in different chapters, and sometimes, finding information may be indexed in more than one place only to find that they are all quite similar pieces of information. I HIGHLY reccomend this book, and its is the best amount of informtion at a very affordable price.

5 out of 5 stars Plant the Fragrant Garden of Your Dreams.......2002-10-23

"Scent is the most potent and bewitching substance in the gardener's repertory and yet it is the most neglected and least understood." This single introductory sentence sets the tone for the bombardment of the senses that awaits us within the pages of this book.

Mr.Lacey's book is so beautiful, it might be hard to believe the emphasis is on fragrance and not color. But, scent is the waft of anticipation overflowing within his chapters. It is his premise that the garden should reward us with pleasure of fragrance every day of the year. He has set about to fulfill this promise by giving us encyclopedic information on fragrant trees, shrubs, perennials, annuals, bulbs, roses and, of course, herbs. Specific selections within each genus help the gardener to choose the most fragrant of the Mock Oranges, Honeysuckles and Old Roses.

But, this is much more than just a beautifully illustrated reference book. There is practical advice on every page. Mr. Lacey's observations help us to choose the right scented plant for the close border, the wall garden or the tree lined driveway. Shade, Water, Rock or Conservatory, no garden is to be without a selection that will satisfy the hunger of our nose.

And, even though he is an English Garden Writer, Mr. Lacey has thoughtfully included English measurements (as well as metric) and notations of soil preference. If you garden in very hot areas of the US, be sure and take those part shade directions to heart.

Whether you haven't thought about the Scent in Your Garden or want to fine tune the orchestra of fragrant sensations in your existing garden, this book will have you making lists and tracking down those 'can't do without' fragrant plants.

4 out of 5 stars Not hard on the eyes either...........2001-04-14

There are so many gardening books on the market why should you care about this one? Well, for one thing the author Stephen Lacey is a distinguished British garden expert involved with the preservation of all those lovely gardens you like to visit when you go to the U.K. Lacey, not to be confused with Allen Lacy his garden buddy in New Jersey, is also the author of THE STARTLING JUNGLE a very good book on building the appealing and different personal space.

In SCENT IN YOUR GARDEN, Lacey continues with his discussion about adding elements to the garden that pleasantly stimulate the five senses. In SCENT he list many plants (photos and text descriptions) including trees, shrubs, bulbs, perennials, and of course Roses that fill the air with perfume.

One might not think of planting a tree for its scent, but I can attest to the wonderful perfume of the Persian or English Walnut tree--and the nuts are tasty too. Of course Lacey includes those plants many of us already know, Nicotiana, Hyacynths, and Lonicera (honeysuckle) but he also tells the reader certain species of tulips, daffodils, Paeonias, Viburnum, and herbs have their charms.

Lacey includes a section on herbs. He says herbs can be grown in herb gardens, but culinary herbs in particular are quite a treat grown in pots by the back door--Parsley, Sage, Rosemary, Thyme--provided there is enough sun. So you have the double pleasure of smelling the herbs through the screen door or window, and enjoying their aroma served up in your favorite dish. Some species of butterflies are particularly fond of Parsley so you'll have some pretty sights too (they lay their eggs which then pupate and eat it!!).

Lacey's book does not discuss growing techniques in any great detail, but it probably wouldn't matter anyway since what works for a plant in England often does not work in the U.S. I live in Zone 7, however, and I most of these plants will work in my growing zone. The roses are tricky--what works in the mild English sun often croaks in the hot Virginia sun--but he lists two roses I am growing for their scent--Comte de Chabord and Blanc Double de Courbet. I have also been able to get some roses to grow in Virginia Lacey does not list such as the lovely clove scented climber Polka.

I recommend this book to anyone trying to bring a little perfume (day or night) into their surroundings. Scented plants can be grown anywhere and from my perspective, the sense of smell is just as important as the sense of sight in the garden.

                          Book Description

"Just Play Naturally" by Vivien Mackie, in conversation with Joe Armstrong, goes very deep into the creative process by recounting the steps by which Pablo Casals taught Mackie, as a young woman, to go beyond all her formal training in order to become a real musician, and it goes on to show how an artist, in this case a performing artist, may continue going deeper all the rest of her life. 'The dialogue between Vivien the cellist and Joe the flautist, both of whom are skilled an devoted teachers of the Alexander Technique, cold profit any practitioner of the arts, but it penetrates beyond art into life itself. 'This book illustrates the evolution of a sense of rhythm, of a connection to the breath, of the ways in which the self combines the resources of the mind and the body, of motion and stillness, of pitch and meter. Even more than the above, this book tells how to change your life, how to get in touch with the reality beneath learned experience.' Peter Davison, Poet, Editor 'I find Just Play Naturally' extraordinary moving - and important account of artistic discipleship, dedication, communion - as well as a deepening revelation of the Alexander Technique.' Rosanna Warren, Poet, Professor of Comparative Literature, Boston University 'I think that this is a most valuable addition to the list of books concerning the F. Matthias Alexander Technique. It describes the experiences encountered by an accomplished musician in making practical application of the Technique, but it also reveals the extent to which one of the greatest musical artists of our time, Pablo Casals, thought and worked in accordance with the similar principles. Readers will learn much from this book about an approach to study and performance from which all students could benefit.' W.H.M. Carringon, Master Teacher of the Alexander Technique, London

5 out of 5 stars Not a typical Alexander Technique book for musicians.......2007-08-30

I've been with the Alexander Technique with over a year now and during this period I have read many books and articles on the subject along with specific approaches on how to apply it to music playing. This book goes beyond the Technique and has very little *direct* mention of it (which I personally loved). It is based more on Vivien Mackie's experience with reconnecting herself to her instrument and a deepened, if not different, approach in HOW she learned, play and interpret music.

Some of the principles she learned from Casals *resonate* with some principles of the Alexander Technique. But as Nelly Ben-Or, pianist and AT teacher, says "in music making so many different elements have to come together and an improved, consciously directed use is but one of them". I have a DVD with a Vivien Mackie masterclass and she goes on by saying that "Through intelligent training of something other than the head and neck you can actually achieve the use, I believe". This is clearly exposed in this book. How Casals brought life back to her fingers without the head-neck-back experience of the Alexander Technique. The Technique is about removing unwanted habits that can help music playing but these bad habits usually show up because of poor music technique itself. So removing the "clutter", as Mackie puts it, does not solve technical limitations as AT teachers are not trained to give music technique. One of the things I learned from this book is the importance of how the player relates to the instrument and how much understanding of this relationship is necessary to overcome plateaus in the learning curve.

Also, one of the things I loved about the book is that it doesn't have a patronising "I am the panacea" attitude like some other AT books I have read. The ideas presented in the book were real experiences and therefore very practical and not just another theoretical "apply the AT principles contained in this book and the right thing will do itself". Some elements here have reinforced certain ideas that I read from Nelly Ben-Or in that music making goes beyond simple mechanical execution and beyond the Alexander Technique. In fact, I don't consider this book an AT book at all because it is written with very little direct mentioning of the Technique and in a language anyone can understand. This is truly a life experience in print.

                          5 out of 5 stars Natural Education.......2002-09-17

My problem with this book is that it contains so much. Joseph Campbell would occasionally begin a talk with"The greatest truths cannot be spoken, the lesser are always misunderstood." Before you read on, listen to the Casals recordings of Bach Suites, and if possible place yourself in the hands of a teacher of Alexander's work. In her quest for the art of "Playing Naturally" Vivien was guided by one remarkable teacher and the spirit of another. Alexander had died by the time her three years with Casals were over. Casals metaphors were drawn from Nature, Alexander found the natural "use of the self" in his search for the skill to give expression to the genius of Shakespeare.
Vivien's lesson by lesson account of her relationship with Casals is unique in biographical writings on Casals. Accounts of lessons with Alexander are available from a variety of distinguished sources. This is the first time two such important influences have been united in the sympathetic environment of a conversation between friends. It is a valuable contribution to available writing on the Alexander Work and Music.

For most of us, Pablo Casals exists only through recordings. It's wonderful to encounter him alive through the living voice of Vivien Mackie--to imagine her in a high window-ledge in Prades as he made his magnificent recording of the Schumann Cello Concerto, to hear him regretfully but kindly telling this brilliant new student, "You do not know what you are doing," to learn how she learns his great lesson: "Do only what is necessary." Often, she found, "doing what was necessary meant doing a great deal more than I had ever done before," but sometimes it meant doing a great deal less. Her conversations with Joe Armstrong show us that "doing more" must include a patient but insistently revealing discipline that can allow the musician to "see all the colours and shades" of the music, "and all the texture, where it tightens, where it loosens and where the turning moments are,...to take time to examine it and bring it all into being." "Doing less" means "getting rid of clutter"--not just "questionable intonation,...and inadequate articulation, and any sort of doubt" in the playing, but also, and chiefly, any habitual clutter of mind and body that might prevent a release of "life and energy." The lesson applies beyond music.

I totally agree with the previous comment. Some one should reprint it! I want to give it as a gift to everyone.

With its simple laguange, the story of a man, a musician is presented beautifully, because this man had a magnificent heart, loved this world, saw this world, and lived up to his ideal and principles. It also gives insight into life: that truly happiness and joy can only be found through serving humanity. If you have doubts in it, if you think money and success are the sources, then you should give yourself a little challenge by this book.

In Casals' stories, his mother impressed me most - I think any woman who plan to have children should read it and ask herself if she is qualified to be a mother. The heaviness of being a mother has not being realized by many young women, and I really think that accounts for some of the chaos and crimes in the world.

I was also constantly deeply moved by Casals' love of his Catalonia. I have heard of this beautiful people before, still I am deeply touched by a man's love of his root, of his culture. It is just so consitent with his being a great lover of humanity, a great artist! I wish everyone understood his own root and culture and love it no matter what turmoil his own country is being through.

So many to say because this book provokes one thinking deeply about the history of this century, about everything essential to life. I am also especially grateful to Albert Kahn to carry out this project, and tell the story in such a wonderful way.

May everyone read it and think how to live his life seriously. This is a book of a living example !

                          5 out of 5 stars Inspirational Credo of a Musical-Humanitarian Giant.......1999-04-03

This is a truly beautiful book. Over the years I have given numerous copies as gifts and pick up used copies whenever I encounter them for that purpose. Not a year has gone by in the past twenty-four in which I have not found myself drawn back to this stirring and inspiring work. Within these reflections the great cellist muses over his long, brilliant career and offers the reader a unique view of the first seventy years of this century seen through the eyes of a humanist/humanitarian artist. Casals had a lofty set of artistic principles and an almost sacerdotal attitude toward the role of the artist in society. His insights into the personalities and work of the musical greats of the late nineteenth-early twentieth century are personal and profoundly enlightening. It is scandalous that this book is out of print! If our music schools and institutions training artists were holistic in their approach, this book would be required reading for every aspiring artist. Within its pages can be found his much quoted reflection on the dignity and importance of the teacher as well as a very moving anecdote about his first encounter with ethnic prejudice when he auditioned for the conservatory in Prague. The monumental dignity with which he handled that situation as a young boy is astounding. This is one of my very favorite books.

My roommate bought me this book for Christmas one year when I was in college, and it's still one of my favorites today. Casals lived through an interesting time in history, having met Queen Victoria as a young cellist, and President Kennedy as an old man. He knew Enrique Granados, Issac Albeniz, Pablo Picasso, Antonio Machado, and depite being a diehard (Spanish) Republican, was a close friend of the Spanish royal family. A well written book about a truly fascinating man.

Who cares what Casals thought about music? If you listen to his interpretation of the Bach Suites- it's shocking- at least compared to 100 different cellists performing them. So, to make it quick: Casals is the most overrated cellist of all ages!

5 out of 5 stars a MUST- READ for Musicians!.......2001-01-30

From Blum's first discussion of the "First Principle" through his Casals-inspired revelations about melodic shape, dynamics, and rhythm, this book is invaluable as a guide for true artistic expression. The line between music as a set of performance skills and as an interpretive art is clearly drawn, and the spirit of Casals beckons all of us who would be truly inspired musicians

5 out of 5 stars An approachable text on interpetation from a master musician.......1999-02-10

David Blum writes an insightful and rewarding text based on notes taken from rehearsals, master classes, and personal conversations with Pablo Casals. According to Blum, the idea for the book came from Antony Hopkins who encouraged him to take his notes and memories and document them so that other musicians could benefit from Casals' musicianship. The book provides a study of the "laws of music" or "laws of nature" which Casals considered to be the essential elements of meaningful interpretation. The text serves as a guide to musicians, conductors, and music educators on the art of music making.

Most musicians know of Casals the cellist. Unknown to many, his conducting career spans a period of over sixty-five years. During his career as a conductor, rehearsals clearly revealed his ideas about music interpretation. The text records the oral statements and the aural interpretations made by Casals during his rehearsals.

Five chapters divide the text with each chapter representing the main areas of Casals' interpretive ideas. The last chapter serves as an application of the elements of interpretation combined to produce a performance. Every chapter includes printed music excepts, detailed notations of performance practice, insightful commentary from the author, and compelling statements made by Casals during the rehearsal of a particular passage. Topic areas covered in the chapters include The First Principal, Finding the Design, Diction for Instrumentalists, Perceiving Time Relationships, Insights for String Players, Casals and Bach, and A Casals Rehearsal: the Pastoral Symphony.

A unique aspect of Blum's book, the reader is encouraged to study and become involved in every music example. The music examples are excerpts from his performances on the cello, lessons with cello students, and rehearsals with the orchestra. Transposed to the key of C for easy reading, all excerpts are in treble or bass clefs. They have notated phrases, articulations, dynamic nuances, and other stylistic attributes illustrating the points of Casals' concepts. Blum tastefully adds Casals' vocal statements to enhance the music examples, "Casals cried out, Here is the anguish! - Let it sing at the top of the phrase!"

David Blum's book is well written and informative. The music examples with Casals' statements allow the reader to easily and quickly gasp the details of interpretation. This scholarly book with practical applications and insights is invaluable.

5 out of 5 stars This is the essential text on interpretation........1998-10-26
