Originally published by the U.S. Department of Transportation's Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), Office of Natural Environment to promote the planting and care of native plants along highway rights-of-way, this unique handbook provides managers of roadsides and adjacent lands with the information and background they need to make site-specific decisions about what kinds of native plants to use, and addresses basic techniques and misconceptions about using native plants. It brings together in a single volume a vast array of detailed information that has, until now, been scattered and difficult to find.

The book opens with eighteen short essays on principles of ecological restoration and management from leading experts in the field including Reed F. Noss, J. Baird Callicott, Peggy Olwell, and Evelyn Howell. Following that is the heart of the book, more than 500 pages of comprehensive state-by-state listings that offer:

a color map for each state with natural vegetations zones clearly marked
comprehensive lists of native plants, broken down by type of plant (grasses, forbs, trees, etc.) and including both scientific and common names, with each list having been verified for completeness and accuracy by the state's natural heritage program
contact names, addresses, and phone numbers for obtaining current information on invasive and noxious species to be avoided
resources for more information, including contact names and addresses for local experts in each state

The appendix adds definitions, bibliography, and policy citations to clarify any debates about the purpose and the direction of the use of native plants on roadsides.

The benchmark text.......2000-04-12

I am on my second read through of Joan's classic treatise having just bought a new Newf puppy. The book remains indispensible. The only flaw would be the inordinate emphasis placed on the "in" NCA breeders and their animals.

The more even handed parts of the book deal with why you would want one of these great dogs and what you do once you realize you own a 130 pound couch potatoe.

The book is full of useful information. Virtually every type of apple is covered with info on disease resistance, how to grow, what they taste like etc. It is small and can easily be dragged around to nurseries when trying to decide what apple trees to buy to grow, which is exactly why we got the book. The reviews I read before purchasing were accurate. Thanks!

I am doing a lot of apple reading for a personal project and found this book to be very helpful. On the same subject Browning's The Story of the Fruit of Temptation is good, andfor a wider view try The Story of the Apple by Juniper.

Lots of useful information in a small, affordable softcover........2005-12-02

I am impressed with the quantity and quality of information in this nice little book (it would fit in a vehicle's glove-box). It is written by professional apple folks -- nurserymen, orchardists, researchers, breeders and professors -- and the information is up-to-date, which includes several disease-resistant cultivars that were introduced relatively recently. There is instruction for planting, and even grafting, apple trees. An aspiring backyard orchardist would do good in buying this book, as it is especially written with this activity in mind. Example sections are: Restoring a Derelict Apple Tree, Planting an Apple Tree Hedge, and Using Apple Bags (to grow attractive fruit without pesticides being sprayed).
Not only for someone wanting to plant trees, this book is also packed with information about apple fruit. What varieties can be stored through the winter at home, which to choose for baking, for making cider, for fresh eating? The guide to 60 different apple cultivars, both antique and newer varieties, includes for each the most useful information, including appearance and taste, vigor and hardiness, susceptibility or resistance to diseases, blooming and ripening times, and more. Most of the 60 are pictured, but a handful are not. Sources of trees and fruit are listed, and a nice bit of apple history is also included. I find it easy to recommend a book of this quality.
