other book, same title.......1998-04-30

There was an 18th century book entitled "The Town Parrot", which had a variety of gossip-related short stories and poems. It would appear that the book being offered for sale here is a completely different book by the same title, and it should not be mistaken for the original.

Interesting, accurate, and enjoyable........1997-07-27

This children's book about a parrot named Turkey stands out. Most parrot books for children show the parrots doing things parrots would not actually do. This book provides accurate, interesting information about parrots. It shows the development of a parrot from an egg to 7 days, 15 days, and on up to an adult. Diet, behavior, and grooming are also discussed.

The title of the book -- Town Parrot -- reveals that the focus of the book is on pet parrots and not on wild parrots. Turkey lives on the top floor of a house with a writer named Ann. As the author describes a typical day in Turkey's life, much helpful information for understanding pet parrots is provided.

Yet this book is much more than just a minature textbook on parrots. The illustrations are colorful and interesting. Each page has several things to look at. The facts about parrots are woven into a story about Turkey and what his life is like. This is an enjoyable book for both children and adults.

From the author: The calls of the Blue-fronted Amazon (Amazona aestiva) are described and their possible function within the social organization of the species during breeding and non-breeding seasons are discussed. We identified 9 vocalizations; six ("wak-wak", "wa-wawawa", transitions, "gu-gugu", guturals, "ka-kaka") were nonspecific and were given in several circumstances: alarm, contact, feeding, and flying. The remaining had specific contexts: "waahh" (agonistic), "grr-uip" (contact in flight), and songs (reproduction-territorial). Vocalization rates increased in alarm contexts and during the non-breeding season, probably as a result of increasing interactions between individuals. The frequency containing the greatest amount of energy was a useful variable to characterize Blue-fronted Amazon calls, particularly at the species level. The most commonly used vocalization, "wak-wak", has structural features that promote directionality and short-range transmission, enhancing its usefulness for the aggregation of individuals. It is suggested that songs were derived from a process of repetition and increasing variability from gutural calls. The highly contextual variability of these calls may be due to an incompletely specialized repertoire or a vocal system based upon combinations of calls for conveying messages.

Tibet was once home to thousands of thriving Buddhist monasteries. But in 1959, following a Tibetan uprising against China's long occupation, nearly all were destroyed by the Chinese military, the practice of Buddhism was outlawed, and the Dalai Lama was forced into exile. Heitman's register is a must for any serious (by this I mean one who's interests extend beyond battles and weapons) student of the U.S. Army before 1900. The register has information on every regular army and all generals including promotions, assignments, awards, organization tables, lists of key officers etc.

All about Ecstasy.......2001-04-17

Through interviews, anecdotes, extracts and analysis, this book looks at the cultural impact of the drug Ecstasy from its early days in the gay club scene through today. Excerpts from newspaper articles, interviews with those involved in the early club scene are great. The 15-page bibliography is unbelievable, as is the list of 50 or so Web sites.

The authors have done an admirable job at not taking sides on the ecstasy debate. They give treatment to medical information, police and government reports, newspaper accounts as well as the comments of users. This approach makes the book more important and long-lasting than a "isn't this cool" book that links music and E in the club scene only.
