    Book Description

The Fragrant Chilli is a book for the beginner chillihead, an introduction to a fascinating plant which has been likened to the sun with planets of cooking and gardening techniques, botany, medicine, language, chemistry and folklore revolving around it. Michael Bailes, the author, chillihead extraordinaire and proprietor of The Fragrant Garden Nursery on the New South Wales Central Coast, presents an eclectic and fascinating look at the plant 'discovered' in the West Indies by Christopher Columbus and taken back home to Spain as a spice that would rival black pepper and perhaps break the Dutch stranglehold on the spice trade.

Contact with other chilliheads opens doors to a cornucopia of Information about its world. Did you know that the Cuna Indians of Panama trail strings of chillies behind their canoes to discourage shark attack? That coating ships' hulls with paint or petroleum jelly laced with capsaicin, the active ingredient in the chilli, deters barnacles? That the smoke from burning chillies can be used to fumigate a house against all sorts of bugs?

Along with facts humorous, bizarre and fascinating, Michael Bailes includes serious discussion of the botany of chilli, its chemistry, its medical uses, how to grow his favourite varieties out of the hundreds available, and how to cook with it (including how to make Chilli Sherry, a sovereign remedy for sore throats) -- but concludes that the one thing that chilliheads have taught him is that life should be fun, that one should take risks and carpe capsicum, or 'seize the chilli'!

3 out of 5 stars For the tourist, not the traveller.......2006-12-12

Blue Guide Jordan provides the reader with an extensive breakdown of all the sites to see in Jordan, but provides little in the way of practical advice on how to travel through this fantastic country. One would be wise to take a copy of the latest Rough Guide to Jordan for in-depth information on hotels, restaurants, and transportation, and carry this along if you plan to visit one of the many archaeological sites that Jordan has to offer. The Blue Guide is well-researched and provides accurate data about most of Jordan's attractions, which is far more reliable than many local tour guides who tend to be a bit creative when guiding unsuspecting tourists. Bottom line: If you want practical travellers advice on where to go, eat, and sleep, buy the Rough Guide to Jordan; if all of this is prearranged for you, then the Blue Guide is a good book to rely on.

5 out of 5 stars Don't Leave for Jordan Without It.......2000-12-17

Jordan is a country that is known to most Westerners mainly for its front-line role in the Arab-Israeli conflict; for the spectacular Nabataean temples carved into cliff-faces at Petra; and as the scene of Lawrence of Arabia's adventures during the First World War. Now that it has a formal peace treaty with Israel, more westerners are making their way to Jordan. Those who do will find the Blue Guide to Jordan an invaluable companion. I also recommend it highly to armchair travelers who just want to learn more about this little-known but intriguing country.

As a series, the Blue Guides have long been famous among discriminating travelers for their astonishingly comprehensive coverage of history, archaeology, architecture, and art. At the same time, the series was known for its refusal to make any concessions to the mass market: Blue Guides typically had no information on hotels and restaurants, and while they always offered superb plans of archaeological sites and museums, they had no photographs or other illustrations, and their covers appeared never to have been run past a graphics designer. Moreover, while written in clear and impeccable English, the understated texts rarely offered much in the way of color or afforded any glimpse of the personality of their author or authors.

All that began to change around fifteen years ago, and the Blue Guide to Jordan is a wonderful example of new model Blue Guides. The series has hung on to all that was good in its original approach while adding drawings, photographs, practical information, and a more engaging and colorful text.

The Blue Guide to Jordan provides unexcelled coverage of Jordan's best-known sites - Petra and its environs are treated in no less than 45 pages, while 14 pages are devoted to the Roman ruins at Jerash (Gerasa). But the real riches of this guide lie in its coverage of lesser-known sites - the Omayyad palaces strung like pearls across the desert between Jordan's international airport and the oasis at Azraq; the black basalt Byzantine ghost town of Umm al-Jimal; the Crusader cave stronghold of al-Habis Jaldak; the enigmatic Chalcolithic site of Jawa, dating to 3000 B.C., its massive walls looming over the "Black Desert"; or the mysterious and tragic mountain refuge of Sela.

The Blue Guide to Jordan will also teach you that the legendary biblical cities of Sodom and Gomorrah are to be identified with the Bronze Age tells of Bab edh-Dhra and Numeira in the Dead Sea valley, both of which were destroyed by fire around 2350 B.C. The authors note that "The destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah may preserve the memory of an earthquake, a not uncommon event in the Rift Valley, perhaps causing some of the bitumen there to ignite. As for Lot's wife, most travelers have managed to identify her somewhere among the strange crystalline salt formations."

Another highlight is the Guide's meticulous coverage of the 5000-year-old King's Highway through the mountains of Moab on the eastern side of the Dead Sea, with such points of interest as Mount Nebo, the eminence from whence tradition says that Moses glimpsed the Promised Land and was buried; Madaba, with its famous 6th-century mosaic map of Jerusalem and the Holy Land; the deep gorge of Wadi Mujib; and the imposing Crusader-Ayyubid-Mameluke fortress of Karak.

Still, it is clear that the two doughty British authors, Sue Rollin and Jane Streetly, are particularly intrigued by Jordan's surviving legacy of Roman fortifications. This was the wild eastern frontier of the Roman Empire, and chains of robust quadrangular forts rose in the desert to protect commerce along highways like the Via Nova Traiana or the Strata Diocletiana. Rollin & Streetly have apparently never encountered a Roman ruin they didn't like, or were unwilling to try and reach, no matter how many miles of 4-wheel-drive exploring were required. Somewhat touchingly, Rollin & Streetly seem to assume that everyone else will share their passion for exploring these sites. Thus, you encounter descriptions such as the following: "Just before a small tyre shop on the northern outskirts of Qatrana, turn right onto a paved road and head west, crossing two sets of pylons. At 4km, the road, now unmetalled, swings north up and along a ridge. Look out for red-painted stones marking the way. Turn west at c. 7km and descend the slope. Bear right at 2 km at a fork and continue for 2.5 km. The impressive remains of the fort should be in view before then." I suspect most travelers will content themselves with seeking out the more accessible Roman fortress sites like Lejjun, but be warned: Rollin & Streetly's enthusiasm for archaeological exploration - which recalls that of such doughty distaff English predecessors as Freya Stark and Gertrude Bell - may prove infectious.

This volume is well illustrated with dozens of excellent site plans, drawings, etchings taken from earlier travelers' accounts, and an insert of color photographs. There are also recommendations on hotels and restaurants. In short, you would miss a great deal if you went to Jordan without this guidebook.

5 out of 5 stars If not Columbus, then who? The answer(s) might surprise you.......2004-11-01

Your assumption might be that a book entitled "Who Really Discovered America?" would be one that makes the case for the discovering of the Americas by the Vikings rather than Christopher Columbus, but those are only a pair of the possibilities here. The complete title of Avery Hart's Kaleidoscope Kids Book is "Who Really Discovered America? Unraveling the Mystery & Solving the Puzzle" and if there is one thing you need to know before diving into this book it would be that you are not going to get the answer as the end. That is because the point here is to present young readers, ages 7-14, with all of the opinions and theories that make up the evidence for this particular historical puzzle. The goal is not to answer the question as to who really discovered America but rather to instruct readers on the mysterious ways in which history reveals itself to inquiring minds.

Recognizing that truth tacking is not easy, Hart provides his young readers with a five-point "Star Guide" to allow them to weigh the merits of the ideas they come across in this book. The idea is that each point on the star (or each finger on your hand) represents a particular point for which you can award 0 to 5 points for each theory: (1) Start with what you know: how does the new theory support the facts as you know them? (2) Throw out old opinions: Is your mind really open or do you secretly want a particular idea to be true (or untrue)? (3) Review the theory evidence: what specific evidence supports the theory and how reliable is it? (4) Use intuition: what does you gut say about the theory? (5) Put it all together: overall, does the idea make sense and fit with the other puzzle pieces? If you believe a theory is absolutely true it would score 25 points.

Throughout the book the "Truth Trackers" are presented with not two but ten different theories to evaluate and see which one comes closest to the truth and earns the highest score: (1) The Land-Bridge Theory that humans first crossed a strip of land from Russia to Alaska; (2) The Multiple-Migration Theory that the first people to discover the Western Hemisphere came by boats, in small groups, over thousands of years; (3) The Woden-Lithi Theory that an ancient Scandinavian king traveled from Norway, across the Atlantic, and up the St. Lawrence River to Toronto in about 1750 B.C.; (4) The Lakota Theory that all human life began in the Black Hills of the Dakotas; (5) The Alien Theory that gifted aliens came to earth to marry the first apelike prehumans and create the intelligent human beings of today; (6) Van Sertima's African Theory that Africans arrived in America almost 2,000 years before Columbus; (7) Professor Xu's Asian Theory that refugees from the Chinese Shang dynasty influenced the development of the Olmec civilization; (8) The Other Way-Around Theory that ancient people from the Americas took to the oceans and sailed on currents to Africa, Asia, or Europe; (9) The Vikings "Discovered" America; and (10) Columbus "Discovered" America.

For most of these theories Hart lays about the specific evidence for and against it to assist young readers to be "a history-in-the-making detective." Students are required to separate fact from fiction, search for artifacts, explore language links, interpret petroglyphs, trace ocean currents, and debate the different theories. Along the way they will learn a little bit about different peoples, from Kennewick Man and Spirit Caveman to the Red Paint People, Olmec, and Mound Builders. There are also creative activities such as building a Viking ship and a "Kon Tiki"-style reed boat, growing a sod house, writing a Viking saga, estimating a trees age, making a giant-sized drawing, baking Taino bread, giving Columbus a grade in geography, taking a survey, and inventing a new holiday to celebrate the Americas.

There is an entire grade school unit of at least two-weeks in length packaged in the 96-pages of "Who Really Discovered America?" Students should be excited by the prospect of being a detective, gathering the evidence, thinking about and questioning that evidence, and engaging in creative projects. Just the idea that the "right" answer (or the "truth," if you will) is debatable is an important lesson. Students will have the "beginning of a deeper understanding of what discovery and America are really all about," but will also realize that new information about the discovery of America is always being uncovered and that the question remains open in the future. In fact, finding out about that new information could be part of the project.

This book contains almost everything you need to know about yard care. It has not only great information, but also color photographs that guide you through every critical step from lawn care to tree planting. It even shows you how to use the right tools. This book covers a very wide range of topics in yard care, and I particularly found the section on trees and shrubs helpful. This is a wonderful book that I would recommend to every gardener, especially the first-time homeowner.

                          Book Description

Contemporary scholars place the rural-urban divide at the center of individual identity in China. This interdisciplinary collection traces the development and distinctions between urban and rural life and the effect on the Chinese sense of identity from the 16th century to the present day. It provides a daunting example of the influence that political ideology may exert on an individual's sense of place.

                          Book Description

The road between Espanola and Taos, New Mexico, commonly referred to as the "High Road to Taos," covers a distance of about fifty miles and passes through many northern frontier settlement towns. Because of the speed limit and road conditions, a trip along this road usually takes three hours although some drivers do it in less. They drive serpentine roads, look at quaint houses and magnificent scenery, and depart content that they have driven through a fascinating area. But the High Road is more than just a scenic road trip; it is a journey through the lives of the people, past and present, who--tied to the earth, fiercely independent, and staunchly Catholic--settled a hostile land, created a new life for themselves, and became the moral fiber of New Mexico. This book gives readers a brief glimpse into the lives, beliefs, and arts of these people and offers suggestions about sights and accommodations for travelers willing to take enough time to discover the beauty and mysteries hidden in the small towns "Along the High Road." MARGARET NAVA, a native of Illinois, spent twenty years traveling throughout the American Southwest researching and writing hundreds of local and national magazine articles about natural science, anthropology, spirituality, and Hispanic and Native American traditions. However, the lure of the Land of Enchantment, as New Mexico is call, was strong and several years ago she left the Midwest behind. These days Margaret, and her dog Sauza, can be found traveling around the state looking for little-known or unusual travel destinations.

2 out of 5 stars pretty much a waste of money.......2007-08-28

I would have said a waste of time, but it only takes about 45 minutes to read the entire book, cover to cover. If you want the cliff notes on travel in New Mexico, I guess this would kind of be the book for you-- even though it's a little brief for that, too.

I'm really just perplexed as to the point of this book. The small amount of actual writing in the book is fine, and the pictures are kind of quaint and rustic, but the book doesn't really TELL you anything. About anything. There is a paragraph on most topics. You will find out stuff like: there is indigenous pottery, weaving and metal-working in New Mexico. Or that you can find good southwestern food, with chilies, and that they are one of the state's contributions to American cuisine. Et cetera.

Buy the "The Hidden New Mexico" book (can't recall the author) if you are looking for a nice overview of interesting sites in the state. It may not turn over a huge amount of anything too 'hidden,' but it is a nice guidebook for pretty much any taste.

                          5 out of 5 stars GREAT BOOK.......2005-01-24

A friend of mine recommended that I read "Along the High Road". I had mentioned that New Mexico was one state that we had not spent much time in as we traveled by motorhome. The book sure opened my eyes, not only to what New Mexico has to offer, but how much we probably have missed by hurrying thru other states.
Margaret really does a grand job in not only telling of the history of the area between Espanola and Taos, but also what awaits today's traveler who takes the time to "smell the roses". Great book and waiting for more from Margaret.

5 out of 5 stars So much more than the cover.......2005-01-05

I loved this book even though I was a little put off by the bland cover. I know we all know the saying "Don't judge a book...." and I'm glad I didn't go by the saying because I thoroughly enjoyed this book and found it to be filled with insightful facts and stories that I haven't read elsewhere. This was a great buy and a fascinating and very useful book. Anyone traveling to this area would greatly benenfit from reading this well written book.

                          5 out of 5 stars Who Knew?.......2004-02-12

I've lived in New Mexico all my life and never knew there was so much to do on the High Road. Like many other people, I usually drove the road on my way to someplace else. Now, after reading this book, I'm going to take my time.

                          5 out of 5 stars I didn't know that............2004-01-25

Before reading "Along the High Road" I didn't know that there was a second chapel at Chimayo or that tin was known as "poor man's silver" or that there are more than a dozen places to stay overnight along the road. This book was well worth the purchase price. I even bought a couple extra for family and friends.

                                    Book Description

The dramatic shift in social and cultural consciousness that occurred in the last few decades left a deep imprint on the gestalt of our cities and calls for active reflection. The time has come to seek unique and creative strategies for developing urban environments and to establish a fresh relationship between the city and its surrounding landscape. Drawing on the wisdom of Taoist philosophy, "Learning from China" formulates a new and responsible approach to the challenge of caring for the continuous transformation of cities. Carl Fingerhuth is an internationally renowned expert in urban planning. He is not only Professor for Urban Planning (Darmstadt Technical University) but has also been actively involved in projects in Europe, USA, Africa and China. In this publication numerous richly illustrated examples drawn from his own practice and experience bring the author's concepts and approach to life.

                                    5 out of 5 stars Connecting Worlds.......2005-02-02

This book went straight to my heart! Fingerhuth has masterfully connected the ancient philosophy of Taoism with the needs of today's modern urban cities. In a fresh, innovative and personal way, he takes us to a place "beyond" modernism, to a new consciousness of the intimate relationship between our urban environments and their surrounding landscapes. This book proposes a gestalt for the city of today that takes into consideration the sensitivities, complexities and idiosycrasies of the post-modern human being. I highly recommend this book to the city-dweller who longs for a more human envoronment in which to live but also to the urban planner whose job it is to create urban spaces in which we can live, breathe and begin to feel at home.

This book illustrates how each time and society expresses the core values of its philosophy in the way it develops cities. The many fantastic pictures visualize the concepts of the book in a thought inspiring manner. For me this book was a journey through time and around the world, accompanied by the personal experience and philosophy of the author, which felt like having a personal talk and discussion.

                                    Book Description

Combining a highly readable new translation of the timeless verses of the Tao Te Ching with lushly textured color photographs, Tao and the City is the first version of this ancient Chinese text to locate itself definitively in New York City. Betsy Wyckoff's photographs of New York lights, surfaces and reflections are a revelation in themselves, and lend new depth, poignancy and immediacy to the revelatory passages of the Tao. These words and images provide a contemplative counterpoint to recent photographs of tragedy and heroism in New York, and an unexpected view of the city through the discerning eye of a long-term resident.

Elysabeth Wyckoff has published a wide variety of books with Barrytown/Station Hill Press, including Over-coming Migraine, Talking Apes and Dancing Bees and Indian Summer: A Native American View of Nature. She lives in New York City.

It is hard to say what is superior: the beauty and sensitivity of the photographs, or the wonderful presentation of the Tao in this new light. Perhaps they are so interdependent, that such a choice cannot be made. We are accustomed to viewing the Tao as an ancient tradition; the feelings it usually evokes are either structured or historical, and we expect it be illustrated with images of venerable mountains or delicate plum blossoms. This does not occur in this book. The combination of modern, strong images and timeless text are anchored in our own way of life, returning the Tao to where it belongs - a part of everyone personal philosophy. Don't miss this book.

Spanning two centuries, this collection documents the lives of fifteen remarkable Latinas who witnessed, defined, defied, and wrote about the forces that shaped their lives. As entrepreneurs, community activists, mystics, educators, feminists, labor organizers, artists and entertainers, Latinas used the power of the pen to traverse and transgress cultural conventions.
