A great destination indeed.......2007-04-18

Most people, when they think of California, probably think of Los Angeles, San Francisco, perhaps San Diego. But the bulk of the state remains more or less unspoiled wilderness, farmland, and charming small towns, and this guide takes you through what may be one of the most accessible examples of that fact. (There are currently 20 more volumes in the Great Destinations series, which you can see at http://www.countrymanpress.com.) The so-called "Central Coast" stretches from Santa Cruz (now almost a bedroom community for the Frisco Bay area) down through Santa Barbara (unfortunately the book doesn't include much information on the latter) and is notable for its scenery, wineries, history, quirky shopping opportunities, and delicious eats. The authors live and work in the region and their expertise is obvious. They begin with a look at the history, fauna and flora, and general geography and character of this 300-mile stretch, then devote separate chapters to the principal divisions of the southward drive--Santa Cruz, Monterey Bay, San Luis Obispo and the Santa Ynez Valley--plus one on the wineries that have recently come into prominence there. Each chapter includes a local map, lodging suggestions (mainly small inns and B&B's), idiosyncratic places to dine (with prices ranging from "inexpensive," up to $15, to "very expensive," $50 or more), bakeries, coffeehouses, farmers' markets, and purveyors of frozen desserts, a long section on culture (architecture, cinema, gardens, historic places, walking tours, kid stuff, museums, music, nightlife, and stage), another almost as long on recreation (beaches, bicycling, bird-watching, boating, fishing, golf, hiking, surfing, tennis), shopping (everything from books to fashion), and seasonal events arranged month-by-month. There are phone numbers for everything that has one, and many websites listed too. A closing chapter provides general information on things like banks, hospitals, and the general trends of the weather, plus a bibliography of suggested reading. There don't seem to be a great many guides that focus on this oddly out-of-the-way (considering that it lies smack-dab between the state's two most famous cities) region, but if you want to find a place in California where you can enjoy a laid-back, relaxing stay, this is the book to get to plan your trip.

THE DESIGNS ARE A TREASURE AND SO IS THIS VOLUME.......2005-08-22

Lovers of fine, unique jewelry will be delighted and amazed to find the stunning works of art displayed in this landmark volume by Fritz Falk. Pieces shown range from the middle of the 19th century to the middle of the 20th. These designs are elegant, extravagant one-of-a-kind pieces with styles representing Art Nouveau and Art Deco.

Among the designers included are Rene Lalique, GeorgesFouquet, Theodor Wende, Ernesto Rinzi - to name only a few of the masters who created memorable pieces.

Master goldsmith Fritz Falk holds a doctorate in art history and served as director of the Schmuck Museum from 1971 - 2003. It is he who shaped the collection as it is seen today, eliciting rave notices from the international community. The Schmuck, established in 1961, is the largest museum in the world dedicated to jewelry design and history.

With fascinating text in both English and German, the volume contains 190 color illustrations, each unforgettable, visually arresting. Dr. Falk contributes insightful introductions to each of the periods represented - The Revival Period, Art Nouveau and The Art Deco 20s/30s.

Probably the dawn of art deco fashion jewelry was the 16-28 May 1927 machine-age exposition in New York. This exposition showed how modern technology could be fused with the arts, bringing German bauhaus design to America's attention.

The prior year, 1926, saw the release of the silent film "Metropolis," Fritz Lang's anxious vision of a world demanding conformity in which "the masses" are controlled by machines and their owners. This film's art direction makes use of many art deco design elements which find their way into mainstream costume jewelry design. Geometric shapes and simplicity dominate costume jewelry in which new, inexpensive materials, such as bakelite and corolite could be incorporated, adding translucent and opaque color.

Fashion jewelry components in the 1930's were manufactured primarily in Bohemia so, when Jewish owners lost their factories in 1938, art deco costume jewelry also vanished from the fashion scene. This book gathers -- and preserves in photographs -- much of art deco jewelry's beauty within its pages.

An Art Nouveau Must!.......2000-04-05

If you pride your self on your Art Nouveau jewelry book collection, and don't own this book, you better order it right now. It includes Lalique, Fouquet, Gautrait, Gaillard, Vever, Wolfers, Masriera, and Cranach. Each of these artists has a small section written about them, some including their signature/stamp/trademarks (black and white pictures of the artisans), followed by a selection of beautiful (all color) glossy pictures. About 95 color pictures in all. In the back is a small biography on each artist, and the entire book is printed in both German and English. This book is wonderful for an overall report on the topic, but not highly detailed on any selected person. So if you want a lot of information on one particular craftsman, this may not be the best book for you to buy right now. After you get the individual artist's book, you definitely need to get this one. The only negative comment I have is one I have for many "art" books. There are a few (three-five) pieces that are blown up to be shown on both pages, and of course the book binding splits up the picture, causing a loss of quality. But I'm picky. I still give the book five stars!

We found the explanation of cat behavior and tips on inital challenges very helpful. When adopting a new cat it is very important to quickly steer your pet away from bad behavior, and this book is great at providing multiple ways to redirect a newly adopted cat from bad behavior.

"Willie" Velásquez, Jr. founded the Southwest Voter Registration and Education Project (SVREP) and was an influential participant in other leading Latino rights and justice groups, including the Mexican American Youth Organization (MAYO) and the Mexican American Unity Council (MAUC). From the late 1960s until his untimely death in 1988, Velásquez helped Mexican Americans and other Hispanics become active participants in American political life. Though still insufficiently appreciated, Velásquez holds a unique status in the pantheon of modern American civil rights figures.

Velásquez's work on voter rights and registration triggered an unprecedented mobilization of Latino voters in pivotal electoral states across the U.S., including California, Illinois, and Texas.
