Even if you're the sort who vows never to set foot on a cruise ship again, you will adore this book, easily drinking in the visual riches served up from the global punch bowl. Yes, there are plenty of pictures of grand ocean liners--snapped from above and from within these bits of Las Vegas at sea. But even more gasp-worthy are Harvey Lloyd's photos of 100 ports of call--from Rio de Janeiro to Singapore to Casablanca to Melbourne to Montreal to St. Petersburg. The hundreds of texturally rich photos alone sell this book, but there are a dozen well-written accompanying chapters that speak to history and life in these places first built up because they touch water. For anyone feeling that the world is boring or small, who feels stifled and boxed into routine, this book provides instant escape. More than a mere picture book, it's also ideal as a travel-planning tool, even if, vowing to never set foot on a cruise ship again, you're taking a plane. In short: an affordable treasure with sensual images so intoxicating they serve as a mind-soothing elixir. --Melissa Rossi
Book Description
The world's 100 most exciting ports of call selected by the world's leading travel writers.
A lavish dreambook, Voyages provides the inside scoop on the world's most exciting ports of call selected and rated by over one hundred leading travel writers -- all authorities on exotic and extraordinary travel experiences. Through a comprehensive survey, ports of call were reviewed and evaluated by this highly respected group of journalists. Romantic Ambiance, Fine Cuisine, Engaging Entertainment, Great Shopping, and exceptional Cultural Sites and Wonders -- the most important qualities in choosing a vacation destination -- were considered and the resulting total score for each port was used to determine the world's 100 most exciting ports of call. Brought together by Jay Clark, travel editor of The Miami Herald, the most savvy and eloquent travel writers divide the world into eleven geographic regions -- the East Coast of North America, the Caribbean, South America, Central America, the West Coast of North America, Oceania, the Far East, Africa, the Middle East, the Mediterranean, and Northern Europe. Each section features an essay by a renowned travel writer intimately acquainted with the region, who details what makes the selected ports of call some of the most thrilling in the world. They take the reader beyond the shore to the regions' most beautiful, lively, and fascinating spots, capturing each region's very essence. With a Foreword by famed maritime historian John Maxtone-Graham and a brief introduction to the rich and vibrant history of cruising by Bill Miller, Voyages is a must-have for anyone considering taking a first cruise, for those desiring to encounter cruising anew, or for armchair travelers who dream of faraway places. It's a grand adventure of lavish and legendary on-board service, novel and pristine sites to explore, and exotic and alluring destinations. Over two hundred and fifty incredible images by internationally renowned photojournalist and cruise photographer Harvey Lloyd bring the experience to life with the richness and grandeur of the on-board experience, spectacular panoramic views of tropical beaches and wilderness; the spectacle of enchanted cities and palaces; and close-ups of the colorful peoples, marketplaces, and sensational retreats. A spotlight on excitement, romance, and discovery, Voyages is a visual getaway for any travel-hungry adventurer.
Customer Reviews:
Great coffee table book for cruise junkies.......2007-01-26
My wife and are are cruise fanatics, and this book is perfect for us. It's full of huge spreads of beautiful cruise photos. And it's not all standard marketing stuff, there's some very poignant shots of the ship that effectively capture the romance of ocean travel.
The ports of call information is great, too. We used it to show our cruising partners where we were headed on our next trip.
Great book!!
Dreaming.......2002-01-16
If you can look through the stunning photography by Harvey Lloyd and not instantly want to toss all your cares and sail away to paradise, you are a stronger person than I could ever be. I definitely hear Mazatlan calling my name.
Your heart might also start to beat just a little faster as you think about standing on the deck of the Royal Viking Sun at Venice as it basks in the golden glow of dawn over the Adriatic. Sigh...
Voyages gives the reader a journey of sheer visual pleasure to 100 of the world's most exciting ports of call. These have been selected by the world's leading travel writers.
Each destination is reviewed and rated according to: adventure, entertainment, romance, cuisine and shopping (very important aspect). Jay Clark fills in the details and has been traveling since the age of five. His articles have appeared in every major newspaper in America. The writing is flawless and captures each moment.
"Every Time I Sail into port on a cruise ship, a surge of anticipation builds inside me. I know I'm about to embark on another extraordinary adventure. I revel at the thought of the new places and new faces I'll encounter. I look forward to immersing myself in a different culture, eating out-of-the-ordinary foods, shopping for exotic goods, and seeing sights and scenes totally unlike those at home." -Jay Clarke
I was a bit apprehensive about cruising, now I am dying to go on cruise vacation! You will find the information is organized into eleven geographic regions. The east Coast of North America, the Caribbean, South America, Central America, the West Coast of North America, Oceania, the Far East, Africa, the Middle East, the Mediterranean, and Northern Europe. A map on the inside covers helps you to locate your dream vacation spots.
Intoxicatingly Beautiful Photography!

ASIN: 141347635X |
Product Description
Voyage Of The Capricorn Lady, Book Two, The Shadow Of His Smile, continues the true story about a Caribbean charter yacht couple. Licensed Captain, First Mate, and Master Chef. Judi, a Capricorn Lady, tells "all" with a sense of humor and obvious love for the life she shared with her Captain Dan. Tales of guests, including Robert DeNiro, Producer Arnon Milchon, Actor Barry Primus, Sara Brown, and others, will entertain the reader, as Judi remembers every detail, right down to the menu. Stories of crews, colorful island characters, beloved friends, and life in the British Virgin Islands, are spiced with memories of years of hard work and accomplishment. Judi describes what life was really like "below decks" as she and her beloved husband strived to provide luxurious cruises for their guests aboard their classic
Trumpy yacht. Working together in the Caribbean charter trade for almost 25 years, they were loved by their guests, but failed to heal family wounds caused by their wrenching departure from their previous life. Travel with Judi from crystal Caribbean waters to the Oregon coast where Dan stood his final watch. Dreams and psychic occurences during Judi's life, and after Dan's death, confirm the bonds of love that bind this Capricorn Lady and her Captain, "Forever".

THE CAPRICORN LADY SAILS AGAIN.......2006-03-02
Sail along with Dan and Judi and the Lady in the second book of their life as they charter the best sailboat and motor yacht in the BVI. You can almost smell the briny sea and taste Judi's gourmet meals as page after page unfolds a story of life on the ocean and the people they encounter. After reading Judi's story, I felt a strong bond with her and now know why I admired her so much when chartering. Her books are a pure delight.
A review of both Books 1 and 2.......2006-01-11
The Voyage of The Capricorn Lady is a voyage anyone can take without leaving your living room. From the moment I began reading, I understood that Judi was not only sharing with us a wonderful part of her life, but developing a bittersweet peace within herself as she wrote. She writes simply and beautifully as she takes us on a voyage of success, failure, and success, peppered with the determination and self doubt we all experience. As we come to know Judi and Dan, we can relate to their difficult choices, and we can rejoice in their happiness.
Throughout this journey, we are confident that Dan and Judi's business savvy, and devotion to family and each other will inspire them through their most difficult times.
These books are not only a tribute to a man by his wife, but a true to life experience of living a dream laced with laughter, danger, and above all love...
Ginger.......2005-12-15
This is a true story of a man and a woman destined to meet and share a life of adventure, laughter, tragedy and love. From their first lunch together in 1964, to their last embrace in April 2003, Daniel Gilman and Judith Bauer epitomized the term "soul mates".
Book one takes us on their journey from the world of high level real estate, through an abrupt departure on their 40' sail boat Capricorn and finally to the Caribbean. The agony of leaving family and possessions behind is gradually softened by their new lives, new friends and a grand new world.
Through a tapestry of defeats and accomplishments, Judi takes us with her on a cruise through her most cherished years with her "Danny" by her side. We experience their hartache and their hard earned victories. As we sail with them on the Capricorn from island to island to the acquisition of their motor yacht, Capricorn Lady, we eat, swim, dive, and tour their stunningly beautiful yet at times unforgiving part of the world.
Judi's vivid and deeply personal account of their life together leaves the reader with an enticing anticipation for book two. These books are just not for those who shared the experience of a cruise with Dan and Judi. It is for the romantic, the gourmet, and the adventurer in all of us.
Voyage of the Capricorn Lady-Book 2.......2005-10-15
In Book 1, we meet Captain Dan and his "Capricorn Lady", Judi. Overcoming unbelievable personal challenges, they continue charting their course on the 71 foot luxury Trumpy Motor yacht. "Capricorn Lady" is a labor of love, and we live each moment with Dan and Judi. Charter guest stories are touching, funny and human nature at its best! Book 2 takes you on many trips around the British Virgins, and you feel like you are also escaping on the "Lady," savouring each adventure with the Gilmans and their guests. Book 2 is an intimate, loving tribute to Captain Dan. Judi has opened her heart and the diary of her life with her beloved husband. Readers will relate to her emotions and cheer her independance. Can hardly wait for Book 3!
This Book Revives Bright Memories, But Brings Tears.......2005-10-12
The second book in this series is wonderful. It brings back memories of days living in the islands, when the challenges of living were overcome by the joy and energy of Caribbean life. Be sure to have a tissue close at hand when reading this book, as it is not all chuckles, as you read of entertaining charter guests and crew. The book deals with deeper subjects such as family, illness and death, and there is an undercurrent of regret for the things that might have been, but this is overcome by the sheer joy the author, my Mother, felt about her life with her captain. I shared the adventure with "The Capricorn Lady", and loved every minute of it.
Customer Reviews:
Really Helps!.......2007-01-20
I am a new resident to Orlando, so I needed something to find my way around the downtown area. This book is great to keep in the car to help with getting around town or finding alternate routes. It is a very detailed map which is great, and it's not confusing! The best part about it is the index where you can look up the street that you are trying to locate and it will tell you exactly which page to go to. Also, it has a list of schools and the area in which they are located, which was great for me since I wanted to know the locations of schools before I moved here. It also has a list of post offices, shopping centers, golf courses, libraries, hospitals, parks etc. which has been so nice to have in the car when I'm trying to find something close by.
I would recommend this street guide to anyone! It is worth the money for sure!!!
Great Driving Aid.......2007-01-11
I work in a business where I drive all over Orlando, from St Cloud to Sanford, Winter Garden to Melbourne, and usually I know where I am going. However, there are a lot of areas, especially downtown, that can become confusing. This book has helped me everytime I've been turned around or lost. Not only that, but I also have used the book to help others when they are lost. It's a great driving guide, and I recommend that anyone who drives in Orlando (or is planning to drive in Orlando) get it.

Osceola The Superman of Native Americans.......2004-12-16
1.) Osceola The Seminole Warrior is about a young indian who is growing up during the War of 1812, and the indians are forced to move. His tribe lived in Alabama but were forced to leave to Florida. Soon the little indian became old enough to become a warrior. Then his tribe is forced west but he will fight for freedom.
2.) My opinion of the story was that is was a great book to learn about what indians went through in the War of 1812.
3.)The best story element to describe this book would be external conflict because its between a warrior and his tribe against the British and Americans in a war.
4.) I rated the book 3 stars because it's a pretty good book for people who are interested in indians and history.

Great novel of the South.......1999-06-04
This book was beautiful, as are all of Pamela Jekel's books. Wonderfully researched. Basically a "true story of the Old South" with what it was really like. No spoiled plantation daughters primping around, but the story of escaped slaves and the Seminoles, before they were a mascot.
Book Description
Osceola had no illusions that the struggle would be an easy one. But after years of humbly acquiescing to the white men's demands, he was ready to fight no matter what the cost. The young men would have the chance to earn war honors. Their women would have reason to be proud of them again.
When "Old Man" Jackson declared war on the Seminole, he never envisioned battling a people who would become symbols of courage, loyalty, and patriotism. Led by the mighty warrior Osceola and witnessed by his beloved daughter Little Warrior, they were men and women fighting an unjust war of greed and aggression -- and the bonds of love and rebellion that united them would thrust them into the heart of a conflict that would change the world and their lives forever.
"Robson is especially good at detailing the daily life of the 19th Century Seminoles and her Osceola is a charismatic and proud hero." -- The Orlando Sentinel

Book Description
The Daisy Sutra is Helen Weaver's memoir of her dog Daisy and the true story of her discovery of animal communication. One reviewer called it"a deep and touching story of the soul bond of a human being and her dog through death and beyond." It is illustrated with twenty-five pen and ink drawings by artist Alan McKnight. It includes an interview with an animal communicator, a special message to skeptics, and a list of recommended resources.
Customer Reviews:
her endless eyes.......2004-12-08
my husband and I knew Daisy. She would be so glad to see us, especially Bill, as he helped with her baths. When you looked into her eyes [and Daisy looked into yours] you could see eternity. Everything Helen wrote about really happened. We gave her book as gifts to five people and each one read it and each one learned something new. This is a must read for anyone who loves animals and for anyone who is curious about life, death and the afterlife.
Delightful Intra-Species Territory.......2004-12-07
The Daisy Sutra suprised me in its exploration of human-dog relations. I was touched by the humor, pathos and finally metaphysical reach of this little gem. I have bought 5 for gifts. Deep, rich, rewarding read.
A Treat For Animal Lovers.......2004-12-07
Anyone who loves and respects, and has a close bond with animals
can not help but love this book. Helen Weaver tells a heartwarming story of loss and then continued communication with her beloved dog Daisy. People who don't "dig" this book are really not in tune with animals. It stirs all the good emotions in those who do.
Bernard Wasserman, D.V.M., author of The Dog Who Met The Queen and Other Stories.
A Must Read for Animal Lovers.......2004-12-06
This warm and sentimental story on the subject of animal communication is a must for all Animal Lovers. As we think of the love given by our four-footed and winged friends, we must realize that there is an intelligence there to be respected and cherished. The author has given an important slice of her life,
expressing a sensitive and caring attitude toward her dog, Daisy. Anyone who has ever owned a pet will understand the feelings involved.
A Lovely Book: Part Animal Story and Part Memoir .......2004-12-06
This is a must for dog-lovers and particularly meaningful (just ask its many fans) to people who have loved and lost a dog.
Weaving, no pun intented, though Daisy's story is the story of her remarkable person Helen and Helen's remarkable mother.

Customer Reviews:
Superb Intro Survey of Latino Art.......2001-02-23
This is a superb introductory survey of Latino visual arts as practiced in the United States by artists of Mexican, Puerto Rican, and Cuban descent. It would be an excellent selection for libraries, and as a high school text or adjunctive college text. The book's exposition is guided by respect for (and a complex undersanding of) the artists' works, a strategy that avoids pigeon-holing works which often do not fit well into conventional categories. Cockcroft is respectful of the people and their struggles, as well as knowledgeable and enthusiastic about the art. It is beautifully written. (Would that more such texts were written with such clarity as well as such a comprehensive and respectful perspective). It should be especially inspiring to young adult readers, offering as it does example after example of integrity, repect for cultural roots, principled opposition to arbitrary restrictions/oppressions--all expressed creatively with a wide variety of examples, accompanied by excellent photographic illustrations. And the artists are examples of success, too, since many of them have successful careers in galleries and with museum purchases of their works. An example of how Cockcroft integrates diverse elements in discussing the examples, is when he notes the presence of doilies in a Nick Quijano work. Cockcroft says they are present in many Puerto Rican households, then parenthetically explains that this is beacuse "many women did needlework as a way to get extra income' (p.96). Thus do the works "come alive" for the reader. This is a book about the meanings of complex cultures and of individual experiences within (and apart from) them, illuminated by examinations of specific artworks. It is an impressive achievement, and a superior introduction to the artworks discussed, and also to their originating cultures and social and political and mystical beliefs. In short, it is a book aobut art, but it is really a book about respect and tolerance intoday's United States based on knowledge and human decency.
