Useless.......2007-01-10

This book may have some use for some history anorak, but if you are looking for a book that guides you through fourteen walks in Athens then look elsewhere. There are few, microscopic, maps, and most of the rambling prose that goes on for pages on end is not relevant to the walk itself, but historical digressions and anectodes. The author didn't think it useful to put summary sections at the beginning of each walk specifying how to get there by public transport, how long the walk is, how long it takes, difficulty, accessibility, nothing. The book has no structure to speak of except for the chapters, so do not think for a minute to skim-read it *as* you are taking the walk, unless your goal is to read a book and not walking.

Not a guide book.......2005-08-09

I am planning a trip to Athens next spring. I love to walk. What could be better than a book of 14 walks through Athens? Not this book. The few maps that are included are of poor quality and hard to read. There is no correlation between the maps and the text portion of the book. There is no information on how to get around modern Athens. This book would be perfect for an armchair traveler. This book would not be helpful for someone who expected to use this book as a reference while actually strolling through Athens.

The setting is Georgia, fifteen years before the Civil War. Blond-haired blue-eyed Billy Powell, the half-breed son of a respected British officer and his Creek Indian consort, stands accused of a murder he did not commit. Thank you for this precious gift! Reading the book brought me great inspiration as it helps me grasp better the dynamic of today national and international political conflicts.

"Freedom Land" will become, beyond the shadow of a doubt, part of the list of recommended classic historical novels to read. The author's writing style easy to read coupled with the books' content made it quasi-impossible for one to put the book down during reading, at least that has been my experience. It is a shame that the US Society is playing the "purist" card, making the book inaccessible to high school students due to certain paragraphs or sections in the book which described intimate moments shared by couples or lovers in the plot. I think it is unfair to deny high school students in this country the right to read such an inspiring, educational and passionate portion of their past.

On the other hand, the designer of the cover did a disservice to the book, in my humble opinion, by not incorporating a photograph of Abraham on the book cover. After all "Freedom Land" is an historical segment of both the Native American and the indigenous or African American's struggle in this country. Although the old adage suggests that one should not judge a book by its cover, I would argue that "Freedom Land" is the exception to this rule. I am convinced that Pictures of both Abraham with Chief Osceola on the book cover would certainly have drawn a lot of curiosity, but more importantly it would have been a truth representation of the story related therein.

Nonetheless, it is obvious that "Freedom Land is the outcome of well documented research combined with great intellectual and literary insight. I would even dare to say that the setting is not just confined geographically to the struggle of Indian and Black Slaves in the Southern United States, its boundaries are broader, as it covers the successful Slave Revolution of Haiti a former French Colony in the Caribbean.

"Freedom Land" has the potential for a great film. Lets keep the momentum going...

History without the histrionics, just lots of drama & action.......2003-11-13

LA reader:Ê After reading Freedom Land, not only didÊI get to read a great adventure but I learned about ourÊcountry's history.Ê I was amazed to see the parallel between the 2nd Seminole War and the current lovely war in Iraq.Ê If only our nation's leaders had read this book we might have done better in Viet Nam,Êand now in Iraq.ÊOr maybe they did read it to learn old/new ways to disgrace themselves. It appears that Pres. Bush used the guise of "weapons of mass destruction" to grab oil in Iraq like Pres. Jackson used the guise of the Indian Removal Act to grab land from the Indians and return the escaped slaves to the southern plantation owners who considered them their property, or chattle if you will.
It is for that reason I don't mind losing money in a reservation casino, compared to Las Vegas. In Las Vegas, the reason they keep the lights on 24/7, is because if they turned them off, all the native Nevada residents would realize they are glowing. But heck, all those atom bomb tests didn't hurt nobody, after all they were just tests, not meant to give Americans cancer forever. Three cheers for Yucca Flats.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves a greatÊhistorical action adventure and wants to learn about our past so that we'll maybe have a better future. Give a copy to the kid to do for a book report. They love the love affair.

our nations history.......2003-08-22

As a native Floridian I learned so much about the history of my state after reading "Freedom Land." In an entertaining manner the book depicts a piece of our nation's history that is seldom discussed or written about.
I highly recommend "Freedom Land" to all historical adventure fans as well as high school and college students as they might learn something about our country's history.

Not for the Squeamish - definitely an NC-17 book.......2003-07-06

The book moves swiftly through a tumultous period, and seems to stick to a historically accurate factual outline of the Seminole War in Florida. It is mostly an engrossing read.

This "historical novel" is probably more true than any of us would care to admit. We know that slaves and Indians were brutally treated throughout the period, and we know that the atrocities depicted continue to happen around the world to this day.

However, the fictionalized parts wallow in such unnecessarily graphic detail that the label "Pornography" comes to mind. It is disappointing because this book could have been so much better than it is - the explicitness is just jarring in places and generally seems forced and doesn't add to the compelling story.

I'd heard an interview with the deceased author's companion which led me to purchase the book. I planned when I finished it myself to encourage my 12-year-old to read it, since it is about a truly heroic figure. Now I just want to get the book out of the house. What a shame.

This is a wonderful book with lots of amazing wolf and landscape pictures. While some people might be disturb by some of the dead animals in the picture, as a animal lover I reckon this book had shown the reality of the nature truthfully, and I really love this book.

This is an excellent book on artic wolves. I enjoyed reading about their lives. If you are not in the mood to read the photos are worth the cost of the book.

Brandenburg's experience shows the wolf as a loving and compassionate family-oriented animal that is as wild at heart as they come. These highly intelligent creatures seemed to stay a step ahead of their distant watchers. This leads to some hilarious encounters and a tear jerking ending. Follow this up with "Brother Wolf."

Description:
This study evaluates three healing gardens surrounding a pediatric cancer center. All gardens contained seating, flowers and plants, but varied in size, features, and in user groups' access to them. A post-occupancy evaluation (POE) yielded a dataset of 1400 garden-users for whom demographic information, activities, and length-of-stay were recorded. Results indicate differential usage patterns across gardens, user category (patient, visitor, or staff), and age (adults and children). The largest garden with most direct patient access was the most used. Staff mostly used the gardens to walk-through or to sit and eat, rarely interacting with features intended for active engagement. Despite patient and child-friendly designs, the overwhelming majority of visitors were adults who mostly engaged in sedentary activities. Children who did use the gardens interacted with garden features significantly more than adults. Although patient rooms are situated at ground-level around the gardens to promote window views of the gardens, the findings suggest an inverse relationship between patient window use and the number of people in the gardens. Finally, preliminary data suggest that emotional distress and pain are lower for all groups when in the gardens than when inside the hospital. Provisional design implications of these findings are discussed.

This two-volume work is a comprehensive collection of the pictorial sources for sport in Pharaonic Egypt. Adopting a broad definition of sport, its scope embraces relevant cultic scenes as well as archery, charioteering and horsemanship, hunting, wrestling, open-air games and board games, acrobatics, dancing and water sports. Over 2,000 documents are given detailed descriptions, with systematic annotations relating to the place, date and content of the documents, as well as the most important secondary literature. The hieroglyphic captions are given in transcription and translation. A representative selection of the pictorial documents, accounting for approximately half of the total material, is presented in the illustrated volume. Accompanying maps classify the material by subject area with indications of their topographical distribution and chronological proximity. The publication of this corpus of materials makes available for the first time the complete pictorial tradition of a great, ancient sporting culture, the intention being to stimulate and intensify research in these fields by the provision of the basic materials. William Carlos Williams wrote from an all-encompassing American vision that recalls the spirit of Walt Whitman. Paradoxically, though, this most-American poet sprang from foreign roots--a Puerto Rican mother and a father who was an English-born Caribbean islander. In this poetically evocative work, Julio Marzán explores the Latin American roots of Williams' poetry. In particular, he focuses on the dualities and contradictions between Williams' public, North American persona, "Bill," and his private, poetically encrypted Latin persona, "Carlos." He shows how Williams' poetry draws on Latin American and Spanish sources, particularly the poetry of Spaniard Luis de Góngora, to encode a Latin subtext in poems that ostensibly present a mainstream, Anglo vision. These explorations uncover a wealth of complexity in Williams and his poetry. Reflecting the experience of many immigrants, his life and work embody the unreconcilable desires to assimilate and win acceptance in a new land while remaining separate and immersed in the beloved culture of one's birth.
