There are many guidebooks on the trail itself. As someone planning this trip, the emotions from both the male and female perspective displayed in this book is also a very important aspect to be informed about also. I loved this book.

I picked this book because it won the Barbara Savage memorial award, and it did not disappoint. This was a great account of adventure travel told from two points of view. The two perspectives made it humorous and insightful to hear about their adventures from two perspectives.

Like a hike with good friends ..........2006-12-19

A Blistered Kind of Love is a terrific account of one couple as they trek the Pacific Crest Trail. The narrative alternates between authors Angela and Duffy Ballard, and that sets the book apart from other hiking memoirs. Seeing the hike from both perspectives invites the reader to share the experience with greater depth than most single-perspective narratives. It's almost as if we get to alternate sharing the trail with each author, hearing ones view of the trail tale before we hang back and join the other, listening to the same story with that author's particular way of looking at the adventure. Very quickly, the reader gets the sense of being on a hike with good friends. It helps that both writers do a terrific job of letting us see through their eyes. This book is strongly recommended for hikers, adventurers, and people interested in the way relationships develop in extreme situations.

For anyone with a sense of adventure and the urge to find it inside themselves. Both fun and inspirational - this is what good travel writing is all about - and it comes with an added twist. I have read the book and most of the negative comments as well.
As an author and a person that have lived among the Indians,I am familiar with a lot of what Lee has declared. Indian culture, no matter the tribes, has a great deal of weired beleifs, witchcraft included. They like smoking the weed and getting high.I suggest you buy the story, I assure it walks with truth.

Interesting anecdotes of a white man living among the indians, the hardships and struggles, but it's obviously a biased tale. Quite a stretch for the reader to believe that a man- Texas Ranger no less- would be unable to "escape" before 3 years. Personally I don't believe it. Anyway, while one reviewer highlights a particular commanche torture to an infant, it's best to keep everything in perspective and acknowledge the extreme brutality whites displayed against all tribes in the western hemisphere- for example, Sand Creek, Wounded Knee. That said, if you like stories similar to this, try Nat Love's autobiography.

First Hand Account of the West and its dangers.......2006-01-23

Nelson Lee's straightforward account of his life as a Texas Ranger and then an Indian captive is enthralling. He also offers a valid critique of how the US govt was misguided in their approach to the Indian problem. Moreover, he pleads for the govt. to do something about those still in captivity. Fewer people might have gone West had they known what was really going on and the dangers ahead. This first-hand account is highly recommended.

Blows Politically Correct Dogma right out of the water!.......2005-11-02

This book as well as "Life Among The Apaches" forms the perfect antidote to the politically correct drivel out there that certain people relentlessly try to pass off as accurate accounts of Frontier History.

Don't be misled by the back cover. I can't imagine who at the publisher ok'd that content, but once you read the book you'll find that the narrator did not "take a Comanche for a bride" out of any fond affection. This is a wonderful book through and through. It shows the Indian prior to reservation life as just what he was and no less.Take the Comanche habit of cutting a slit between the lower jaw of infants that their captives had when the Comanches felt that the infant was crying too much. After the slit was cut, the baby was hung alive on a broken tree branch, which would pierce through the slit and stick into the mouth under the tongue. Then the baby was left to die - hanging on the tree suspended from the broken branch.....all great sport and entertainment for the Comanches, as you'll find out when you read this startling and epic account of captivity and escape/evasion from Indian captors by a true Frontiersman and survivor.

This book is for the serious student of orchids, whether neophyte or experienced grower. It covers 87 genera in the Oncidium/Odontoglossum alliance, and provides a wealth of cultural information, based on the genus' origin and habitat. If a grower knows the altitude, day and night temperature fluctuations, humidity, rainfall patterns, light requirements, etc., of a plant, (s)he stands a much better chance of growing (and blooming) it successfully.

In addition to providing all of this information, the book gives plant size and type, whether the plant has a stem or pseudobulb, describes the leaves, inflorescence, and flowers, including size, number of flowers per inflorescence, and whether or not they are fragrant.

There is a discussion at the beginning of Cultural Recommendations in "captivity": light, temperatures, humidity, watering requirements, fertilizer, rest periods, growing media, cultural problems, etc.

This is not a picture book. The only pictures are the eight on the dust jacket. But there is invaluable information between the covers for the person who wants to excel at growing and blooming orchids.

I love Baker's books on orchid species culture. It's all the information that experts are always haranguing beginners to learn about species: "Know where it comes from! Learn its preferred temperatures! Lowlands or alpine!" Alas most beginners haven't a clue where to look for this kind of information other than the same old reference books that keep reprinting the same old outdated and sometimes outright wrong stuff. Use this in conjunction with Harry Zelenko's Oncidium book for easy identification, and you're all set to grow any oncidium alliance species that might come your way.

I LOVE this stained glass book. It has hundreds of color photos of stained glass windows in countless styles, from prairie to etched to bevels to antique "factory" English, English muffle, and a lot more. This is an awesome reference tool for designs for making your own stained glass windows, and its just fun to look at. You can't go wrong with this book - it should be a "must-have" for every person who is seriously interested in the craft of stained glass.

The book is great; the price is NOT. It used to be $10 here on Amazon and now it costs the full cover price! I was just about to buy one as a gift and now I've changed my mind. So that's a bummer - I would look elsewhere to try and find a better deal. You might as well buy it in a regular bookstore and not have to deal with waiting for it to ship and stuff.

Forty of the 120 pages are Checklist and Graphic Guidelines. It is nice to have them in one place; they are detailed, incorporating issues such as the environment. Accept for grab bars, etc. there is not much that I would consider of "modest or no additional cost," as the book jacket purports. Focus is on open floor designs, but also has tighter schemes. Great photos are matched with good information, that I haven't found elsewhere.
