Every required detail is available. All the reasons for which anyone would visit Chicago are in the book. It has 100% coverage, and a perfect guide to anyone who does not have taxicab-driver familiarity.

It has brilliant organization, separations by price, geography, and entertainment genre. If you want to know where The Billygoat Tavern is, or where to get the perfect Chicago-style hotdog, it's inside. If you need to get your Chicago pizza fix, have no fear. If you merely on a sight-seeing trip or a spending-big-money trip, this book is the only guide you'll need.

For those unfamiliar with the city, I highly recommend ripping out the perforated map that gives the essential details of the "El"; it's a life-saver.

I love Chicago, know it pretty well, and I'll use this book over and over. There is simply too much to see, do, and utilize in a one-weekend trip.

Laura Johnston keeps it simple. I'm a former Chicagoan and this book has just the right mix of the 'can't-miss' Chicago combined with 'off the beaten track' fun. Doesn't overwhelm with densely-written pages and more choices than one could possibly sample in a few days. Highly Recommended to anyone headed to My Kinda Town for the first time. A winner!

Despite the title, this is actually an excellent guide. Written in the friendly tone of a Chicago inhabitant with an obvious love for the city, it offers the sites, restaurants and activities that you might come across were you visiting a friend. Highly recommended!

Fabulous guide to the city.......2001-12-07

Just when you think you know Chicago, Laura Johnston (who, as it turns out, isn't even a native -- but it's hard to tell!) shows you more. I tried to highlight the "good parts" of this book, but now my entire book is marked up because it is just THAT good. From tremendously useful reviews of various sightseeing destinations and restaurants to helpful suggestions regarding bargains (i.e., a chart that shows you free admission days to various attractions), "Chicago for Dummies" is absolutely essential for the Chicago visitor who doesn't want to miss a thing.

This educational story tells about the construction of the Erie Canal. Colorful illustrations project the happiness felt by many once the waterway was completed. Along with these illustrations are diagrams and captions provided on most pages. Such graphic aids help the reader understand many different aspects of the canal. Readers ten years and older will appreciate the additional information as it explains how the canal operated. I would recommend this book for readers at the fourth grade level and higher. It is an informative story with exceptional illustrations. Readers will find the history of the canal engaging and the graphic aids intriguing.

This is an excellent expansion of the "picture book" format for more mature readers; the colorful pictures show action scenes while text elaborates historical details. Additional embedded illustration shows map details of regional sections as the story unfolds. Fascinating information helps us understand why this feat was so important to the country's development at that time.

Dont waste your precious bucks on this one.......2001-09-08

This is a very mediocre product from the able hands of "Ded associates", so dont bother. Im sure that when they started this project they didnt intend on filling the pages with 'cut and paste' techniques, but thats exactly what they did.There are very few original ideas in this book and you cant escape from the "i have seen this somewhere else" feeling when going thru the book. As i said, The number of trully inspiring pages in this book is very low and the cover itself, which is a wonderfull illustration of the island is probably the best work in the entire project.

a nice combination of design and fiction.......2001-06-20

I picked up this book while I was traveling in Taiwan. The cover, I must say, is what captured my attention among all the other design books surrounding it.

The story which consists of writings by Stephen Jones is a strange but compelling mix. It a story about a man named Jack and his observations and journeys in the course of the day.

As a graphic designer, the designs and layout of the pages really compliment the writing and vice versa. Sometimes, the pages can get really overloaded with imagery and text and the next white empty space. Normally, I would be detracted from this but all this use of negative space, color, and imagery really add more depth to the story.

The buyer or reader must be aware of the story sometimes buried within the pages. Design books tend to be visual devices and I sometimes find myself flipping through pages of books like these too fast. Reading the writings in this book helps you understand the design decisions that Ded Associates made while conceiving and designing this book.

DED are a direct derivative of designer's republic and they know it. It is not enough that they are in the same building and that they use the same design styles and that they steal the look, feel and personality of DR... they had to go and publish this truly pedestrian book.

DED are perfect examples of pragmatic, uninteresting, mediocre designers.

Read this if your goal in life is to be a low-level production artist who cuts up the work of others.

This is a ARMY RESEARCH INST FOR THE BEHAVIORAL AND SOCIAL SCIENCES ALEXANDRIA VA report procured by the Pentagon and made available for public release. It has been reproduced in the best form available to the Pentagon. It is not spiral-bound, but rather assembled with Velobinding in a soft, white linen cover. The Storming Media report number is A582823. The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: Soldiers explored a synthetic representation of an Army heliport under three visual display conditions: (1) wide field of view (FOV) helmet mounted display, (2) narrow FOV helmet mounted display, and (3) stationary, wide screen display. Pretest and posttest measures of spatial knowledge were recorded. Measures of presence in the virtual environment were recorded. Measures of simulator sickness were administered upon exit from the virtual environment and 24 hours later. Overall, soldiers acquired a significant amount of spatial knowledge from the synthetic representation. When transferred to the actual Army heliport, soldiers were able to navigate around the location with near zero errors. There was no effect of visual display on any measures of spatial knowledge. Also, there was no effect of visual display on reported presence or simulator sickness. Simulator sickness was significantly reduced after 24 hours away from the virtual environment. Presence did not correlate with spatial knowledge. Simulator sickness correlated negatively with spatial knowledge. Presence and simulator sickness were negatively correlated.

This is such a wealth of information on markings, errors, values & just so much information that it is such an addition to valuing my collection and documentation of when it happened in the making of the special precious moments.
