A true regional gem.......2006-07-12

It is obvious that this gem-like book was created out of love of the subject. The author-illustrator team have included every wild flower of the Door County penninsula (the Cape Cod or Monterey of the Mid-West- depending on your perspective.)

The book is conveniently organised by the color of the flowers. I found this to be remarkably easy to use for quick identification. The entries include the common name, scientific name, the family, a detailed written description, habitat type, flowering season, and whether it is native or introduced.

The most remarkable thing is that every single watercolor illustration was done fresh from personally observed specimens. This eliminates the "copying of mistakes" that goes on for generations that you find in some reference guides.

Finally there is a section of excellent line drawings of plant parts, as well as a convenient glossary of botanical terms.

The profits from the sales of this book go to the Door County Land Trust.

"Flying for Peanuts" is a humorous book that celebrates the success of the low cost airline concept successfully and profitably practiced by Southwest Airlines in the USA for over a generation. The author uses an unorthodox writing style to pay tribute to his fascination about Southwest Airline's success based on the Airline's lack of textbook customer service protocol.

The serious story behind this book is about how Herbert Kelleher, the now retired former Chairman of the Board of Directors and founder of Southwest Airlines (SWA) created a no frills airline that has been a darling for the common American person on the street. The Airline managed to create a highly motivated workforce with a unique customer oriented culture. The Airline made flying affordable to ordinary men and women who otherwise would never have afforded to fly regularly on conventional ("relatively high fare") legacy carriers.

Among the unique features of SWA's services that result in a low cost (and low fare) structure, high aircraft utilisation and quick aircraft turnarounds include no assigned seating (free seating), no meals, a single class (all economy class layout), simple fare structure, high employee productivity, good reliability, safe operations and a humorous friendly approach to the serious business of flying.

This book is recommended reading for those with a good sense of humour and who want to have a basic understanding of how SWA's has created an efficient, low-cost, people-oriented airline with helpful, down-to-earth and fun loving employees.

a fun book.......2005-05-25

I had the distinct pleasure of meeting Marty on a Southwest Airline flight between Phoenix and Oklahoma City last year while I was still traveling as a Physician Assistant educator prior to the start of my Real Estate sales carrier. His book is as delightful, especially for all of us Southwest Airline commuters, as is Marty in person -- a fun unique read written by a fun unique guy.

I should have read this book BEFORE my recent trip on Southwest. I actually saw many of the shennanigans Marty describes with such classy humor. It made me wonder just how many of them he had pulled on me as the middle person to his aisle seat. The book makes flying Southwest more fun.

Cat Medicine.......2005-04-20

This is an excellent book for the cat owner who is not sure what to do with signs and symptoms of their cat. Each sign or symptom has an algorithm with little "yes" or "no" arrows to follow till you reach a probable diagnosis and plan. It also includes Kitty CPR. I wish I had known this book existed before, as I would have bought it for my sister before her cat got sick and died.

The book did the trick for our initial diagnosis of allergies and continues to help us out when our cat has an issue. The charts are great and this book is worht the money.

In performing various economic analyses for its clients, I have occasionally been asked to investigate the market potential for various products and services in Netherlands. The purpose of this study is to understand the density of demand within Netherlands and the extent to which Friesland might be used as a point of distribution within Europe. From an economic perspective, however, Friesland does not represent a population within rigid geographical boundaries, rather, it represents an area of dominant influence over markets in adjacent areas. This influence varies from one industry to another, but also from one period of time to another. In what follows, I summarize the economic potential for Friesland over the next five years for hundreds of industries, categories and products. The goal of this report is to report the real economic potential, or what an economist calls the latent demand, represented by Friesland when defined as an area of dominant influence. The reader needs to realize that latent demand may or may not represent real sales. For many items, latent demand is clearly observable in sales, as in the case for food or housing items. Consider, however, the category "satellite launch vehicles". Clearly, there are no launch pads in Friesland used by the space industry to launch satellites. However, the core benefit of the vehicles (e.g. telecommunications, etc.) is "consumed" by the area served by Friesland. Without Friesland, in other words, the market for satellite launch vehicles would be lower for the population in Netherlands, Europe, or the world in general. One needs to allocate, therefore, a portion of the worldwide economic demand for launch vehicles to both Europe and Friesland. The data presented are the result of various spatial econometric and time-series forecasting models which, for each category presented, are applied to forecast and allocate demand across all countries of the world and major distribution centers or centers of dominant influence within each country. This is accomplished knowing that economic fundamentals (e.g. income) generally vary from one city to another within a given country over time. In this report, I report the allocation for each category for Friesland as an area of dominant influence in Netherlands and, potentially, Europe. Important Caveat. Category definitions may overlap. The sum of multiple categories, therefore, may double count.
