I have to concur with other reviewers. This book is disappointing and over-priced. It is not very user-friendly and lacks good maps. It is better than nothing and includes a personal touch. For example, it warns you which campsites tend to be noisy and over-run with tourists. But overall, I wanted more information on particular areas -- especially regarding lodging and dining options and better maps. I'm still looking for a good Michigan guide.

Tuis guid allows to know most of places interseting in the Michigan, with a lot of details, address, contacts. It is divided in 12 parts to deal with every area of Michigan one by one.

Disappointing on several levels..........2004-12-12

As a former resident of Michigan and appreciator of the New York State Moon Handbook written by Christiane Bird I find this handbook lacking.

I agree with Duane from Oregon that the treatment is shallow and lacking in detail. The two most notable deficiencies versus the New York handbook are the lack of maps and photos. The NYS has many, many detailed maps of smaller areas that you may not find on the typical state map. Another disturbing item is the lack of photography - the author of the NYS guide clearly traveled to almost every location and took photographs for inclusion in the text.

There are also three other items that bother me - the author is not a Michigan native, the flow of the text is atrocious, and there are some overly cynical or negative comments in some places.

I feel it is crucial for a native to author travel guides - I find interested natives are the most capable of conveying the true sense of a place. As for the text flow, this is most noticeable in the form of incomplete sentences and sentences that begin with conjunctions. The author also slips into the passive voice far too often.

Finally I feel that some of the cynical comments are simply out of place. They may put some readers off locations that are well worth visiting. Travel should always be a happy, relaxing experience!

Flat-Out Terrific.......2002-05-20

If you're thinking about a MI vacation this year or just a few weekend outings in the state, get a copy of this book. After living in the state for 26 years, I thought I knew MI pretty well. But, on a recent trip to the UP (Upper Peninsula), this guide showed me new stuff every step along the way-----and it's fun to read.

Not up to other Moon handbooks.......2001-08-28

When well done, the Moon handbooks are excellent. One that I have used extensively is the Maine handbook. Accurate, lots of detail and very useful. In contrast their Michigan handbook is a disapointment due to its shallow treatment. NW and NE Michigan are so lightly done that the material is of little use in trip planning. It needs to be redone in depth. Until then, I would not recommend it.

Black and White?.......2007-03-03

This book is great for the $7 price, just let me preface with that remark. The book is also of a pretty good size.

On the downside, and this is a big one for me- There are more than just drawings in this book. Many of the works are drawings with Gouache and Watercolor, and are still printed in black and white. While all the works print up okay in black and white, with little loss as to the line work, the fact that the originals are in color makes me a little sad.

If you are interested at all in any more than the line quality of Schiele's works, get one of the more expensive collections of his works, which include color plates.

cheap........1999-01-18

dover art library books are a great way to get copies of master drawings...cheap. all prints are in b/w and print quailty isn't the best...but for the price they are a great unprecious alternative to the glove wearing 60$ art book.

A Remarkable Treatise on a Fascinating Subject.......2000-08-20

I know, I know. People would rather read about movie stars and other famous people. I know this one's not on Oprah's reading list. Initially I was captivated by the cover of the book, but even though I didn't know much about Pinnipeds at the beginning, I found it a highly pleasurable and informative experience to scoot myself right through this book.

I'd like to step past the obvious positive features of Riedman's lovingly created product - lucid, readable, interesting, well constructed - and focus on something a little more subtle. Riedman steps outside the main topic of the book frequently, with illustrative and textual hyperbolations into animal and plant life closely associated or analogous to the Pinnipeds, presumably in an effort to provide a more three-dimensional view of her subject matter. But there's more to it than that. The picture of the dead Great White Shark at Ano Nuevo - winter home to the Northern Elephant Seal - brought home to me the almost innocent wonder with which Riedman views her subject matter. I imagined Riedman pouring over thousands of photographs, and on finding this one, saying "Boy! I've got to put that one in!" I have to admit that, by the time I got to this picture, I was thoroughly hooked as well. And thinking about it further, I could see that the world these fascinating creatures inhabit is truly a different and marvelous place.

To think that before I read this book, I couldn't tell a Seal from a Sea Lion - both dark, blobby bodies floating around in the surf or sunning themselves on a tidal rock. And after reading "The Pinnipeds", I find that this image has expanded so very much more that I feel I can almost picture what the world must be like through the eyes of that Seal Lion on the cover. Now, to have written the book that got me there... Well all I can say is that Marianne Riedman is one lucky person to have been given the opportunity to write this book, highly competent to have take the challenge so well, and above all so very much aware and so keenly fascinated by her subject matter. Well done!

I also want to say a brief word about the talented artists that provided illustrations for this book. Pieter Folkens is a highly skilled technical illustrator, with a love for marine life, and an eye for the detail. He can truly bring his creations to life. I'm less familiar with Irene Campagna, but her efforts in "The Pinnipeds" are also excellent. Both deserve mention here.

The Essential Text on Seals.......2000-06-02

Comprehensive. Well written. Informative. Accessible. ... I can't think of enough positive things to say about this book. Riedman manages to give readers a thorough overview of the biology and habits of sea lions, seals and walruses. The book is encyclopedic in its scope, but you do not have to be a biologist or naturalist to appreciate the details it covers. And then there are the pictures: maps, photos, line drawings and other illustrations help bring to life the various pinnipeds Riedman discusses.

Divided into nine chapters, the book covers their adaptation to life in the sea, their evolution and classification, their ecology, predation, diet and food, mating and social structures, reproduction and life history, maternal care, and communication and learning. And while this is a biological text, the writing is breezy and readable, mixing anecdotes and personal observations with the multitude of facts.

This is a book about a walrus who is very worried about riding a bike. He keeps on thinking that something could happen to him. Then his friend tells him to try it so he does he has fun and then he crashes into a tree. He gets up and is all fine.

The "Very Worried Walrus," written by Richard hefter. This book is about a worried walrus that is scared to ride a bike. He is worried that he will fall off and hit a tree, and have to go to the hospital, but the traffic jam stops him so the helicopter comes and as it takes him to the hospital the rope brakes and he falls in the water. Now he has to swim all the way to the shore. Then when he gets to a town all the trains had left and it was to late for the bus. So he had to walk home in the pouring rain and that made him sad. But the pig begged and begged him to try it. So finally he rode and rode but the end is up to you to read. I thought this book was a very good one and it will help your children to be brave and try everything at least once. This book will soon to your son or daughters favorite book. They will read it over and over again

This is a wonderful book for a parent to share with their child. It teaches a simple leason: don't sweat the small stuff and let it build up to be something bigger than it should be. My parents shared it with as a reading learner. It has become part of my families daily lingo.

I remember the story about that old worried walrus very vividly, and I had always loved it. The story begins when a pig askes the walrus if he would like to ride a bike. That is where the nightmare begins. This silly walrus imagines himself on the bike, yet for some reason he seems to lose control of his own imagination. He begins to see himself recklessly riding the bike through town. He gets chased by a train, and eventually ends up in a river. The next thing he knows he's being lifted out of the water by an Iguanan flying a helicopter and taken to the hospital. But what do you know he wakes up and the pig convinces him to go ahead and give it a try. I loved all the sweet pickles books as a child. This one made me realize that even though things could be scary sometimes, they usually were not as bad as they seemed.

I would have called this book "Tooth Walker," and perhaps have anthropomorphized the "characters" a bit more, make it both scientifically solid (as it certainly is) and more fanciful, just slightly. It's certainly a valuable little book, and as are the marketing spinoffs. I deeply look forward to reading the upcoming series (Grolier) that Carol Young and Skip Crane are producing (over the next two years), on Imagining Nature, a fabulous and instructional series for young children on nature's formations, such as trees, fungi, ice--all the mysteries (and hidden faces) in the faces of nature. This series will spin the world of young scientists and the curious among us all.

this is a great picture book with a little bit of reading to help young children up to first or second grade to understand the importance of taking care of your teeth. I highly recommend this book to anyone who just enjoys reading to the youngsters, or is working 0n a class room theme about teeth. Easy book to read to a group.

As a lay home gardener I found this book to be a bit on the academic side. It seems to be written with Wisteria connoisseurs in mind. However, I did find the Wisteria history to be interesting. And, the pictures are definitely worth taking a look at. The photos showing Wisterias being used in different growing situations was very helpful.

The list of individual Wisterias was helpful to me in selecting a good cultivar for my particular site. After reading the section on care and training, though, I would have to disagree with the author that Wisteria's aren't that much work. To me they appear to be quite a gardening commitment.

Peter Valder has done a wonderful service in sorting out the confusion that surrounds wisteria varieties. He has written what appears to be the first book on the genus in a European language. It is a splendid account of both the history and the genus Wisteria the result of much painstaking research. His findings have been have been taken up by the Royal Horticultural Society. The book is beautifully written with superb photographs. I and others regard it as a minor classic. Should be on every gardener's bookshelf along with his more recent magnificent "Garden Plants Of China".

Should be entitled "History of the Wisteria".......2000-05-26

The author is clearly an authority on the vine (or tree or shrub...), but I found the book overflowing with the history of each variety with little information or advice on how to grow. I reviewed the book again today as I went out to prune my wisteria and couldn't even find the work "prune" or "pruning" in the index! It's a beautiful history book with lovely pictures but far from a "how-to" guide, if that's what you're looking for. Perhaps I didn't look closely enough at the book's description before purchasing!
