Book Description
The twenty-first volume in the series focuses on plant pathology and is the first to integrate
Advances in Plant Pathology into
Advances in Botanical Research. The articles represented strive both to draw insights from relevant biological disciplines into the realm of plant pathology and to reveal the general principles of plant pathology to the broad audience of biologists, including undergraduate and postgraduate students, researchers and teachers.
Kombrink and Somssich address how plant pathogens communicate at the genetic and biochemical level in determining resistance or susceptibility. This general theme is continued in articles on the nature of fungal wilt diseases (Beckman and Roberts); plant virus infection (de Zoeten); and the gene-for-gene interactions between plants and fungi (de Wit). Ehrlich takes up the timely issue of how pressure to expand and intensify agriculture is influencing agroecosystems and natural ecosystems on a global scale. The current status and future prospects of chestnuts, in health and disease, is considered by Anagnostakis. In an article on phytoplasmas, Kirkpatrick and Smart review the recent application of molecular techniques to the inference of taxonomic and phylogenetic relationships among mycoplasma-like organisms. To conclude the volume, Savary and colleagues show how a form of systems analysis can be used to handle large and complex data sets in epidemology.
Book Description
Avant-Guide presents a style-driven guide to the world's largest adult playground. Presenting tips for finding the best bars and clubs for after-hours carousing and the casinos with the best odds and the hottest cocktail waiters and waitresses, Avant-Guide Las Vegas is like no other travel guide to Sin City. This book explores everything you need to know about dining in Vegas, including celebrity chefs, top food, in-style scenes, cheap steaks, the best buffets, late-night dining, and more. Among the suggested lodging and itinerary options is the Mandalay Bay hotel on the Strip, where you can raid the minibar before heading downstairs for some action. There, you can take a few spins on the roulette wheel, get "comped" for a first-class meal at Aureole, Lupo, or another a world-class restaurant, and then delve into the night at Ghostbar atop the Palms or another rooftop bar. Afterward, go to Flyaway Indoor Skydiving, where they have a jet engine embedded in the floor. Then, just before sunrise, head downtown to Binions or the Four Queens for an ironically cheap steak-and-eggs breakfast. And that's just day one.
Customer Reviews:
Buy This Book.......2006-07-21
I bought this book after using and fully enjoying the Avant-Guide to Paris. I knew nothing about Vegas before a recent trip and Avant-Guide made sure I was well prepared. It had excellent information on cool and hip places as well as "classic Vegas" and must-see destinations. It covers it from the perspective of singles or couples. This is not a family vacation book or a budget travel book. It is fun to read and easy to navigate. Because of this I also bought the New York book which is equally enjoyable.
The only guide you'll need........2004-12-30
Dan Levine and his crew have experienced what they write about. It's based on reality, not on puffery. Savvy, irreverent at times, funny and wonderfully practical. It's extremely well organized and easy to use. I've read a ton of stuff on Vegas and this is the only one I actually use and give to others. Their opinions are the same as mine.
My only criticism is the binding. It tends to fall apart after many uses. Dan, would you consider spiral binding?
Thanks, Dan. Samuel Henderson
This is not your parents' guidebook..........2003-03-11
This book was my introduction to the Avant Guide series, and I was thoroughly impressed. I've been to Vegas several times and used as many guide books, but this is by far my favorite. The author demonstrates a refreshing respect for everything cool -- from groovy local dives to swanky tourist hot spots. If you wish to revel in all things Vegas -- if you dig the history and the kitsch -- this book will show you a good time regardless of your budget.
Be warned: Square types may find plenty to offend on these lively pages. Hotels are ranked from "Very Expensive" to "Cheap A--"; drugs and prostitution are given a comic wink; and the author makes a point of helping you avoid child-infested locations. If any of this sounds like a bad thing, you'd best avoid this book.
But for anyone with a healthy sense of humor, irony, and things absurd, this book is the next best thing to having a supercool, local friend guide your Vegas experience.

Standard Horse Bio.......2007-01-05
There are only two bios of Citation that I know of. This one and another by Phil Georgeff. There is a world of difference between them. Smith is primarily a writer, and this book is one of a series of books about racehorses, including the Great (Man o' War) and the near Great (Sunday Silence). It is pretty standard stuff, well done, but standard.
Phil Georgeff is primarily a caller of horseraces and his book is mainly a labor of love. He knows a lot of people around horseracing (good friends with Eddie Arcaro, Citation's main jockey in his phenomenal third year) and interviewed many of them for his book. There are lots of quotes from people who knew the Joneses, the Joneses themselves, sports writers, etc., plus much gossip, and detailed writing. Georgeff feels that Citation was without a doubt THE best racehorse of all time, and he is not shy about letting you know it.
The Smith book does have some things the Georgeff book lacks. Its photo section is slightly better. Georgeff's book was a major disappointment in one area: it did not include Citation's race record, although it had a very nice index. Smith's book rectifies this in an extremely satisfactory manner: it not only has Citation's lifetime record, it has the DRF report for many of his 3-year-old races.
In my opinion, the true Citation fan needs both books for they really complement each other.
Citation by Pohla Smith.......2002-09-12
I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys reading about horses, and to the Thoroughbred race fan in particular, who likes to read and learn more about racing's greats. As a long-time fan myself, I couldn't wait for this book to be released. Being one of racing's greatest, I have always wanted to read about Citation, to learn more about him, get the full story on his life and racing exploits. This book does not disappoint. It is well written and very informative. I couldn't put it down. Now I feel like I really know the story of "Big Cy".
I have this book in my collection. I strongly suggest others to add it to theirs.

Book Description
A strange episode that is at once a central part of American history and a tragic tale of human ambition and cultural misunderstanding. In an ill-starred undertaking, Napoleon III attempted to install Archduke Maximilian of Austria as the Emperor of Mexico. The move pitted liberals against conservatives, and the New World against the Old--and ended with Maximilian's execution, the insanity of his wife, Charlotte, and the emergence of the United States as a world power. "Jasper Ridley has written a riveting account of an episode which is exciting throughout and tragic at the end; it is also essential reading to understand the history of the United States today."--Antonia Fraser.

A Forgotten Sidebar to the Civil War.......2007-08-28
Most books about the American Civil War take up battles and warfare. The few that concern the diplomatic and international repercussions of the war are usually about Confederate relations with Britain and France. Yet the relationship with Mexico was just as important.
The Native American Liberal Benito Juarez assumed power as President of Mexico in January 1861, just as southern states had begun to secede from the Union.
France's Emperor Napoleon III took advantage of the Civil War to send forces to occupy Mexico, and installed the brother of the Austrian Emperor Franz Josef, Archduke Maximilian, as "Emperor of Mexico". Juarez and his forces fled to the north of the country. When the Civil War ended in mid-1865, the United States was strong enough to put pressure on France, and Napoleon III withdrew his forces. Without that support, Maximilian's regime collapsed. He was captured by Juarez' victorious army, and despite the protests of European countries, the "emperor" was executed.
"Maximilian & Juarez" is an excellent account of the entire conflict, starting with the Liberals' victory, and the flight of Mexican reactionaries to Europe in search of support to overthrow the regime. Jasper Ridley portrays Maximilian as a sympathetic dupe, a would-be Liberal constitutional monarch, who was fooled into thinking that the people of Mexico wanted him. Napoleon III's betrayal of his promises to Maximilian left him to die, as the would-be emperor refused all encouragement to flee while he could.
This book not only describes in great detail the conflict between the Juaristas and the Imperials, it also covers Mexican relations with both the United States and the Confederacy during the conflict. It also takes up to some extent the flight of many Confederate exiles to Mexico when their cause failed.
A man with a tragic flaw.......2003-10-02
Maximilian wanted to be wanted. Probably he wished it so badly he was blinded to the facts. Comparisons between the Ridley work and the earlier one are probably needless. The French invasion of Mexico in the 1860s is such an obscure piece of historical knowledge for most outside Mexico as to render the point moot. A new work every few years to remind a few readers is most likely a positive development. With each reiteration of the tale a few more Americans might have a dawn of awakening that, while North and South filled the gutters with blood inside the US boundaries the world continued to turn elsewhere.
Comprehensive histories of Mexico from 1800 to 1870 are rare. Most US citizens only know about the Texas War of Independence. Few even know about the events in the adjacent province, New Mexico, during those violent years.
The Ridley work covers a lot of ground. The details of what Napoleon III intended, why Britain became involved, and why Ferdinand Max persuaded himself Mexico needed and wanted him are generally made plain in this book. Politics in the US and the Civil War made this a saga to be watched only out of the corner of the eye while a major European power invaded a neighbor and installed an emperor. The book is also a middling introduction for the casual reader to become familiar with the first popular leader in Mexican history, Benito Juarez.
I consider it a good read and a worthy addition to my bookshelf.
Worth Having on your bookshelf.......2003-03-25
I started doing some basic reading about Juarez prior to writing a newspaper article about Cinco de Mayo. A number of sources recommended this book, so I found a copy and dug into it. Ridley doesn't "whitewash" any of the main figures, nor is it a hatchet job. I'd certainly gained more respect for Benito after reading Ridley's book.
More than Max and Benny.......2002-08-01
Ridley does a more than credible job of portraying the conflict surrounding the attempt to install a foreign emperor in Mexico. Much emphasis is placed on the internal power struggle between conservatives and liberals and the ultimate succes of the Mexican hero Benito Juarez. Many of the leaders of the times are introduced but seldom with any great depth. The title is Maximillian &Juarez and this is not a biography I suppose. Napolean III is obviously given more treatment since it was his idea to install the ill fated Maximillian. The other leaders who are involved in the story are Mexican Generals Santa Ana, Leonardo Marquez, Porfirio Diaz, Miguel Miramon, Melchor Ocampo and other foreign major role players like Marshall Achille Bazine, William Steward. United States major role players brought tot life are Generals Grant amd Sheridan and of course President Lincoln. Their are also some pages dedicated to the plan(adopt) of Maximillian to install his successor Augustin Iturbide(grandson of Emperor Iturbide) but this was not to be. Of particular interest is the international scheme and involvement of various nations in this attempt to install Maximillian. Light is shed on the United States involvement although it was preoccupied with it's own internal problems since it was during the time of the Civil War. The difference between the South's attitude is also discussed. It was also interesting to see the interaction between the foreign French society in Mexcio and the ruling class of Mexico, many marriages were conveniently arranged to preserve the strength of families. I thoroughly enjoyed this glimpse into a part of Mexico's past and learned some interesting facts about the players and places involved. The importation of arms and the circumvent route was fascinating as was the involvement of the French Foreign Legion. The importation of 500 captured black Sudanese by Egyptian forces I found quite alarming and cruel as they were taken unwillingly from their families not knowing their fate. The thought behind this was that they would be better suited for the heat and could fight(for their lives) better than the French. Many of the cruelities and manipulations of war are revealed in this book. I would recommend this book to anyone who is a history buff or has a particular interest in Mexico or France. Although the title features the main players the emphasis is not neccessarily just focued on them and gives a much broader and realistic scope. A very readable and enjoyable portrait of a part of Mexico's history of foreign intervention that does not read like a history book but more like a novel, a bittersweet story of foreign intervention, war and triumph.
The Emperor versus the Indian........2002-05-22
I found this book very similar in material to Gene Smith's earlier book Maximilian and Carlotta. I think Ridley followed
the same context as Smith, and threw in a little more material on
Juarez. So, if you have read one of these books, don't read the other.
Overall, it presents the conflict between the Conservatives and
Liberals and Maximilian and Juarez correctly. It poses Maximilian as heroic and wrong headed while Juarez is portrayed as stubborn and single minded. Both needed more analization to portray them correctly. The book was very readable.

Remember, remember, the Cinco de Mayo.......2005-03-22
I grew up reading Argentina Palacios' books and I can't believe I'm the first person to review this one, probably her masterpiece (although she is young still, and I wouldn't put it past her to write another good one). Palacios is the Panamanian-born New York based author of several children's books and she has always done a fine job re-telling the legends and folk tales of the indigenous people of Peru, Latin America, Central America, even the Spanish speaking people of the West Indies; and she has often provided for the children of those lands up todate and accurate translations of the beloved US children's writers (like Beverly Cleary).
VIVA MEXICO is a little diofferent for her, but it just goes to show you, a talented writer doesn't have to depend on re-telling the same old folk tales. This book is a remarkable book of history--with no talking animals here--and it just "happens" to be written for kids, with cute illustrations in bright, primary colors, and it tells the story of Benito Juarez, a boy from the Zapotec Indian tribe who grew up the lowest of the low and yet somehow found it within himself to climb and scratch his way to the Presidential Palace of Mexico City and sit on its throne there.
Life wasn't all peaches and cream for Juarez, for he had to fight one of the bloodiest battles ever fought on this continent, the so-called Battle of Puebla. It so happens that this battle took place on May 5--in Spanish we say, "Cinco de Mayo" and school children and patriotic adults celebrate it everywhere we honor the spirit of a free Mexico.
It's funny hearing the explanation of phrases you've heard your whole life long and never understood the meaning of, and that's why we are so grateful to author Palacios.
By the way, this book, like the AUTOBIOGRAPHY OF MALCOLM X, was edited by the great Alex (ROOTS) Haley. Maybe one of these days Sra. Palacios will drop her cloak of silence and pen an autobiography of her own, revealing among other things what it was like to work with Alex Haley while creating her own masterpiece. Here's hoping!

Benito Juarez life.......2006-05-31
The cover of the book has a colorful picture of Benito Juarez. It's by Jan Gleiter and is illustrated by Francis Balistreri. It is published by the stek-Vaughn company in Austin Texas. Each page of the 32 pages has a picture about what the say on the reading.
Benito Juarez fought for freedom, made laws, he had a goal. He did whatever was necessary to do this goal. He had the ability to change Mexico and make it a better place.
He was a brilliant, stubborn, honest, and simple man who only wanted one thing. He wanted to improve the lives of the people of Mexico more than any person before or after he accomplished that goal. He can be your role model, so enjoy this book and learn from his examples.
