Great fun to read, and studded with first-person "how I did it" notes from, I presume, Real Students. Once again, the English viewpoint, but still with lists, accounts and ideas that would be useful to U.S. students thinking of engineering an educational year on the lam from college.

DREAM WITH IT.......2006-04-21

I am a traveler. I never took a "gap year" but during my backpacking trips I met a lot of "gappers" ... and I have to say that this book (which was a gift) is making me dream to take a GAP YEAR ... and on top of that there are really a lot of very good practical tips. Bottom line ... if you like to backpack ... read this book ... it will make you dream even if you are in a basement w/o windows of KANSAS CITY ... :D

This book has good guidelines and some good ideas. A little behind in some of the "new age" training. But worth buying.

A very helpful book, especially for a novice........2005-09-26

This book might be under the level of someone who has spent a lot of time around dogs, but for the first time owner, it is great.

The author covers a lot of topics needed for a new puppy mom or dad. I especially recommend the sections on housebreaking vs. paper training. It also works because it doesn't make assumptions about your puppy. Some dogs are dominant and some dogs are meek, and the book is stronger because not only does it take this into account, it has a guide on determining what type of personality your puppy has.

I grew up around dogs, but never trained a new puppy myself, so this was my bible for the first few months with my shih-tzu. In fact, it was out so much that it has chew marks in the corner. So, while helpful as a guide, be prepared to work with your new family member as well.

This book is extremly helpful in assisting the reader in choosing, training and living happily with your puppy.

Good basic information, outdated training techniques.......2004-08-19

This book has a lot of useful information about puppy development and personality - but it recommends the choke-chain leash-correction training approach, which has been abandoned by many dog trainers. Setting up situations so the puppy gets it right and is then rewarded is much more humane than jerking the poor little one around.

If you really want to get a puppy but can't have one because of whatever reasons, get this book. That's what I did. It will give you the virtual pleasure of puppy ownership, making you smile and tear up a little bit every time you open it. It's filled with tenderness, sensitivity, and simple love for the animal. Of course, if you enjoyed Sharon Beals' "What Dogs Do," you will certainly love this one.

I have found this book to be helpful in finding information regarding a specific orchid. I'm the Orchids host at BellaOnline.com and need to be able to research and become familiar with a variety of orchids. This book devotes 2 pages to each of the 100 orchids featured--one page to the growing requirements and the other to a full page color photo of the plant in bloom.

You may not be able to find the exact plant pictured, but the information included will give you a good start on finding an orchid with similar needs. If you are looking for a profile of Oncidium "Sharry Baby", you can find one here--with a nice photograph.

The first section of the book contains general information on culture, buying orchids and various locations to house your collection.

This book provided a great overview of the main genus of orchids. I would have liked to have seen more about how the genus are related, and which can be crossed to produce a hybrid. Also, what techniques are used for judging orchids? The pictures themselves are worth the price of this book. More than half of the orchids pictured will be imposible to find, but a good local gardener will be able to find you a close match.

Beautiful book, but has a catalog feel........1999-02-17

This book is a good source for orchid lovers. The photos are beautiful, but I couldn't help feel as if I were previewing a fancy catalog. Why were these orchids picked to be in this book? I was disappointed that the plants listed were not of the more readily available variety. I had the book with me when I went into Smith and Hawken and the odd thing was some of the plants they had for sale were not listed in the book. So I guess it's not a catalog after all. A great thing about the book is that it offers information on the plant shown so the reader would have an idea what plant would bloom in what size pot. It also gives you good info on how to care for a specific plant so you don't make the mistake of buying one that would be too difficult to care for.

I found this book to be easier than most orchid books to read and understand. It covers a wide variety of orchids. However, it tends to be over simplified. Orchids are not as easy to grow as the author lets on. Also, some of the orchids mentioned in the book are not readily available and some tend to be very costly.

This study presents a history, based on original archival and primary source material, of the Baptist mission educational situation of Cameroon province from 1922 to 1945. The provisions of the League of Nations' mandate, under which Great Britain administered the province in this period, included `complete freedom of conscience and the free exercise of all forms of worship', yet from the beginning of the Mandate clear tensions existed. This book delivers just what its title would suggest... boys in their briefs surfing and hanging out at the beach. Cute, if immature, young men talk about the surf and what they like in a girl. Not exactly enthralling reading, but admit it, you didn't want this book for the plot!
