Book Description
This book addresses the challenge that the exceptional diversity of tropical fungi present to taxonomists, biochemists, molecular biologists, ecologists, and pathologists. The significance of the many tropical species and ectomycorrhizal associations in nutrient cycling in rainforests, desert ecosystems and aquatic habitats is considered, together with an evaluation of the potential of such fungi in the production of commercially useful, novel metabolites.

Author Andrew Coe takes an in-depth look at Mesoamerican culture, from the early mammoth hunters to the magnificent civilizations encountered by Cortes, and explores the newest and most exciting scientific theories on each site.
Customer Reviews:
More than a travel book.......2006-02-07
I have used Archaelogical Mexico for personal use and have placed it on reserve in the college library to supplement the scholarly texts in my Latin American Culture course. The book contains over 400 pages of concise history, illustrations, photographs and quality anecdotes about the Mesoamerican cultures of ancient Mexico. This is one of the most responsible travel books I have seen, so I wanted to write to congratulate Mr. Andrew Coe on a delightful compendium of Mexican archaelogy. Kathleen O'Connor-Bater
An Excellent Overview.......2005-11-16
I think that the reviewers that gave this book lower scores may have had misplaced expectations. While this book gives a reasonable amount of information about each of the sites that it covers, it does not provide an in depth treatise on them. It does, however, provide sufficient detail for a starting point and, more importantly, is invaluable in identifying the major sites and in recommending which sites are potentially more interesting. I found the rankings (in number of trowels) to be particularly useful.
Is this book up to date?.......2004-01-04
I know it's hard to keep up to date, but that's why new editions are published. What got my attention was the fact that this book's description of getting to Yaxchilan clearly pre-dates the construction of a paved road from Palenque all the way along the Guatemala border to Lagunas de Montebello. The publication date of the book is September 2001, yet the road was opened in 2000 and must have been under construction for some time before then. I hate it when something I know is wrongly described in a book; it makes me mistrust the rest of it.
Disappointing.......2002-12-05
I really looked forward to this book and took it with me on my tour of mayan sites in the Yucatan. However, I found that this book offered very little more than was available on the posted signage at the sites. Also, many of the maps are inadequate. I often found myself going to my Lonely Planet guide (Belize, Guatemala & Yucatan) for more detailed maps and decriptions of archeological sites.
Although the author presents the sites in a "tour" format, in practice it is hard to follow, and since the descriptions lack photos, it's very difficult to compare what you're seeing with what's written in the book. Although there are photos of the sites, but not of the specific items that the author is describing.
Small, simple & useful.......2001-07-30
this book can be deceiving, it's small, doen't use very technnical language, fits in your backpack and looks very innocent. But is full of information, maps, step by step guides to the sites and some tips on hanging around the sites.
I'm not disapointed of buying it.

Book Description
Silver plants bring a luminous beauty to the landscape. Their distinctive colors, textures, and silhouettes enrich garden design; their ability to withstand extremes of heat, cold, drought, wind, and, for variegated silvers, shade makes them indispensable for gardeners. The geographic range of silver plants is broader than many assume. Silver conifers evoke snowy, colder regions and thrive in the most frigid sites. Even in four-season climates where they are frost tender, stunning agaves, yuccas, and echeverias can be grown outdoors in containers, then wintered over indoors, while other silvers, including tropicals like the downy-leaved Plectranthus argentatus, can be treated as annuals. In this comprehensive and inspirational compendium, silver aficionados Jo Ann Gardner and Karen Bussolini have selected and vividly illustrated the best candidates for a broad range of growing and design needs. Whether you decide to add a dash of quicksilver or the soothing perfume of an ancient herb, this in-depth guide to plants of uncommon beauty and versatility is certain to change the way you see and plant your garden.
Customer Reviews:
Slightly out of date and not for Southern gardens, .............2005-06-30
Often overlooked, the so-called silver and `white' plants can provide a fabulous backdrop for other flowers and can soften the more vibrant colors such as red, orange and yellow. Some of silver plants such as various Achillea have their own lovely flowers, others are mainly grown for their foliage. Although many of the silvers do well in cooler climates where they are often found in raised beds or rock gardens, I have found it difficult to grow many of them in my wildly varying climate where summer days can be both muggy and hot and provide too much moisture or humidity (thus rotting the under leaves and branches of Lavender, Thyme, Rosemary, Santolina), or conversely, too much drought (thus killing the Ajuga).
ELEGANT SILVERS includes many photographs taken in the Denver Botanical Garden (one of my favorite places to hang out for a day or two) where dry mountain air and raised beds make the growing of "silver" alpine plants quite possible. Many of the silvers that thrive in Denver are not suitable at all for growing in Southern gardens, however, as much as I would like them to be. Other photos of items listed in the rather comprehensive `Encyclopedia' included in this book were taken in dry desert areas of the West, and are thus perfect for xeroscaping (growing in hot dry areas), and some of these plants work in my garden until I get a humid summer. (My neighbor hangs a tarp over his garden when it rains for long periods). Gardner and Bussolini provide an index explaining which plants are suitable for which kinds of conditions, but as both of them garden in the northern areas of the US (New England, New York) their attempt to describe regional conditions may be a kind of overreaching.
Silver Is In Fashion........2005-06-29
Silver plants have a luminous beauty, as does silver hair; in fact, silver has taken the place of gold in jewelry of choice these days. The silver spectrum is similarly varied, from silver white to gleaming blues. Silvers are assets to gardeners across the land.
Silvers are chosen for the way they look and for their soothing or the energizing perfumes and for the feel of their leaves. In the past, these plants were for use medicinally, from toothpaste to the pangs of childbirth. The ruffled, gray-green horehound was used to soothe a cough -- I still use it today.
From the first to the sixteenth centuries, silvers were noted for their healing properties like sage, mostly confined to the herb repertoire until 1980s. Silver plants were considered very important visual elements for their contrast to shades of green.
Blue spruce is one of the most beautiful silver/blue trees, popular for use as a Christmas tree -- but grown outdoors, they expand and grow tall, keeping the special shade. There was a huge one directly outside a gate at the apartment building where I live, and it was cut down a few weeks ago. Not easy to grow, a lovely treasure, but this town of Knoxville, Tennessee, likes only one tree, pink/white dogwoods.
They cut down others freely as they have no sense of decorum or beauty in something which has no bright or purple flowers. This is a purple town! The Taplow Blue shrub has the look of blue spruce without the tall sculpted shape. Another name for heather is "Silver Knight." It has been used in medicinal preparations.
There is a silver dollar gum tree, The so-called "money" plant turns silver when it goes to seed and makes an ornamental grass to use for decorations. The Southern Lady fern has silver in it. There is a Spanish fir tree and blue noble species. There is silver feather maiden grass and the Spanish moss in Louisiana is a gray/dull silver.
Some are named after animals: pussytoes, rattlesnakemaster, quail, silver bluebeard, ponyfoot, coyote, wormwood, lamb's ears, hummingbird plant, donkey tail, Tasmanian devil, and hens & chicks. Not just silver plants are spectacular, but so are silver-haired ladies.

Mixed.......2000-03-27
After reading this book it felt as though it left a bitter taste. If I had the choice of reading this book again, I wouldn't. It is sour boring with the potential of being a master piece. I hate to give such a poor review to such a talented artist, but Ambroise Vollard just didn't capture the feeling I was looking for when I picked up this book. Bottom line, great artist, interesting topic but written in a hardcore stiff mannar that recieves a poor rating.

BUY THIS BOOK.......2005-07-30
I saw this author on Life and Style and it intrigued me, but I waited to buy the book. Forget every makeover book or magazine you have read. They mean nothing to this book. You don't need to be on the show. The contents of this book will change your life. I'm buying a copy for every girl I know and you should too.
There Is More To This Book Than Looking Like Barbie.......2004-12-09
I am so pulled to the Therapy part of the hit tv show The Swan. I was hoping the book would cover that part or at least lead you in the right direction.
Im very happy with the book I read it in less than 24 hours and now im doing the workbook part of it.
All tho you dont get the 3 mos all by yourself to do this , the book is a great alternitive. It walks you through the steps that you need to cover come your past and work on your present.
The book is not full of cosmetic surgery jumbo, it bearly speaks of it really . This book is all about the therapy part of that program. It is money well spent.
I would recommend it to anyone. There are areas everyone can work on and this book will make you think about them and help you do something about them.
