Best book on Antarctica I've read.......2001-06-06

I've been fascinated with Antarctica for some time now, and I recently acquired several books on the continent after seeing the Boston Museum of Science Omni Show, "Shackleton's Antarctic Adventure." Of those books, this is clearly the best. It provides information on the geography and topography of Antarctica, a history of South Pole explorations, and information on the wildlife that populates the coasts. The pictures are far superior to any other book I've read. The writing is concise and easy to understand. It is a truly amazing book--the pictures alone are worth the cost.

Awesome........2001-05-08

When I needed reference material on Antarctica for fact-checking my next suspense novel, I turned to this National Geographic classic. I expected the usual fare: extraordinary photography and a few pertinent bits of data. My expectations were exceeded.

The volume is divided into four sections. The first covers the physical geography, a litany of world record extremes. The coldest, driest, highest, windiest, least populated, etc. The next touches on the rich heritage of exploration and discovery there, incredible tales of bravery and hardship like those of Shackleton, Scott, and Mawson. You'll want to read more after this primer. The third section is on wildlife, very little of which is land-based. But the surrounding seas and sky are the most fertile and abundant on the planet. Penguins, seals, squid, krill, albatross, whales, algae, and more. The final section is devoted to Antarctica's environmental peril. Kim Heacox simply states the facts here, avoiding the overstatement and wolf-crying that cause such disservice to the environmental movement.

The biggest surprise was the quality of writing. My previous exposure to National Geographic was cursory perusal at the dentist's office. This one I read from cover to cover. The writing is simply wonderful. The photos are of high quality and exciting shots which attract your attention to the extent that you would imagine that you would believe that the photos represents one book inside this book. In short this book is recommended for any one who likes to discover this ambiguous area and who can not visit it. Iconsider this book as a reference/easy guide for the wonderful southern Antarctica.

The Queens of Scrapbooking Do It Again.......2006-02-23

I'll admit it, I'll buy anything that has Becky Higgins' name on it -- and with Lisa Bearnson, how can you miss? I really enjoyed seeing personal pages from each woman. They are always a wealth of inspiration and knowledge. If you're looking for detailed "how tos," this is not the book to buy. But if you want pages and pages of great inspiration and top-notch design, don't miss this book.

Happy I have it.......2005-08-05

As a big fan of Becky Higgins, this book was a "must buy" for me. I have all of her previous books, and really appreciate her beautiful, photo oriented (vs. page embellishment oriented) scrapbook pages. I really liked the Lisa Bearnson pages also. That said, this book seems to have a lot of fluff in it. I wish that instead of beautiful filler pages with pictures of bookshelves and flowers, that there would have been more pages from each scrapbook featured. Sometimes the journaling is too small to read - and the journaling is such an important part of a scrapbook. This book has much less content than Ali Edwards' Designer's Eye for Scrapbooking. Still, a great book and a tool I will use.

A TRIBUTE TO WOMEN AND TO HUMANKIND.......2002-10-07

Seventy-five of the most noted women of the recent past are remembered by a roster of outstanding photographers in this stunning volume. Each photo, which captures the subject at the height of her achievements, is accompanied by a biography detailing contributions made and public response.

All of the photos capture the essence of the woman, as Cokie Roberts remarks in the Preface: "Look into the eyes of the subjects of these photographs and you see the triumphs, failures, hopes, and disappointments of some of the truly talented women of our time."

The album is a diverse collection of unique women, from Helen Keller to Dorothy Parker to Gertrude Stein to Gypsy Rose Lee to Shirley Temple to Ella Fitzgerald.

We learn that upon Grandma Moses's first visit to New York City she "told reporters, `It's nice to be here, but the city doesn't appeal to me.' `As picture material?' someone asked. `As any material,' she answered."

And, we discover that Joan Baez remembers singing the civil rights movement's anthem "We Shall Overcome" at the Lincoln Memorial, by saying, "...one of the medals which hangs over my heart I awarded to myself for having been asked to sing that day."

How could you not love Oscar?.......2005-04-28

Oscar de la Renta is a brilliant designer and throughout this large book his talent radiates off the page. It has insightful quotes from both Oscar and his clients. It really helped my love for fashion grow with the knowledge of his struggling background and undying work ethic. A must have for any fashion student or admirer of beautiful things. Hey, if you can't buy one of his dresses, mine as well own some pictures of them.
