Excellent before trip book.......2005-03-14
Lots of strong colour photographs, very good artwork/floor plans of sites, excellent descriptions of the sites that take their time and really describe the place, it's feel and art. You could carry this with you in the streets as you went from place to place, or use it in your hotel room to review where you are going or what you have seen, or a good book to read while sitting at a cafe in Rome taking a break from sightseeing.
There is no map section in the back, the maps are given but chapter/city section. For some reason the books lists the time in the middle of the day the site would be closed, but does not list opening closing times (that needs to be changed). The hotel & restaurant listings are very good,
The book has a nice feel to it: Good looking, well written, informative. this is a book you would leave in your bookcase long after the trip is over.
Extremely Helpful ~ Great Buy.......2004-07-19
I am very picky with my travel guides and I think this was the best purchase I ever made. I expected the beautiful pictures; however, the content was also amazing. I personally prefer more than a 4 line blurb about an attraction and in this book, I found there were amazing detailed descriptions for each place I visited to identify the history, important characteristics and must see items. The maps were very helpful while navigating each district and the recommendations were well suited.
NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC travel book very similar to travel shows.......2002-04-23
your typical travel guidebook (a little on the heavy side) with the most detail oriented information at your disposal. good for the plane ride over to italy, it's full of information about everything you wanted to know about rome, starting with history and culture. the guidebook is not very practical for pulling out of your sack especially if your burdened with cameras and other heavy travel items. the book is very very very informative and true to national geographic, chock full of beautiful pictures! this guidebook offers a series of walking tours with national geographic as your guide; extremely useful if you have the time to walk and read as you go! while travelling i found it a little difficult to find the maps when i needed them (during those vacation rush periods). this book is useful for reference; with every point of interest explained thoroughly.
Rome: I feel like I'm There Already.......2000-11-29
Unable to locate a Michelin Green Guide of Rome at my local bookstore, I opted for the National Geographic Traveler Guide of Rome instead. Being a long time fan of the magazine, I felt it was a good bet. I was thoroughly delighted with what I found in its pages: beautiful photographs, of course, along with wonderfully concise history and details for everything I wanted to visit and more. I am mainly interested in the art and architecture of Rome, and this guide does not disappoint. My friend, who was born and raised in Italy, living in Rome for over eight years, was equally impressed. He found several new discoveries for himself. There are many clear maps, as well as a practical section called Travelwise, rating hotels and restaurants and providing informative advice for transportation, shopping and entertainment. Although my primary purpose for buying a guide was to have enough information to be able to choose what to fit into a visit of only a few days, I found this guide to be so well written and put together that I will keep and reread it in years to come.

A "must have" book for all potential Sussex owners.......2003-07-23
purchased Mr. Lewis' book after our family decided to look for a puppy. I read his book cover to cover, many times before I was able to get our first of 3 Sussex. It is a thorough and informative book about this little known spaniel breed. His coverage of the history of the breed is facinating. I have not found as complete source of Sussex information anywhere else. My sister has purchased the book several yrs. ago and has also just purchased her first Sussex Spaniel. I highly recommend reading it prior to looking for a dog.
Sussex Spaniel by John Robert Lewis, Jr........2000-05-20
This book is the bible for Sussex Spaniel owners. It's also the only book on Sussex in print in the U.S. If you are seriously considering purchasing a Sussex you ought to buy and read this book before contacting a breeder. It will help you evaluate if you are willing to go through the process of buying and raising this rare breed and give you the basis to ask intelligent questions. Lewis' book is chock full of wonderful full-colour photographs that show Sussex at all ages of the two body types. These are beguiling dogs and the pictures will steal your heart. Lewis provides a through history of the breed both in England and the U.S. Like the Bible, Lewis spends a large number of pages on the "begats." This is very useful information for a novice breeder but a snooze for pet owners. Lewis also provides useful, general information for new puppy owners. He suggests specific toys that Sussex universally enjoy. My only criticism is the section on health. Lewis glosses over the real health concerns of Sussex owners. Sussex are a healthy breed with few problems but there are serious problems which occasionally occur. It would have been nice if the book provided information about how to recognize the early symptoms of these health problems. One final fun fact: One of the photos in the book identifies the dog as a Sussex but it's a Field Spaniel! After reading the book you should have no problem spotting the mistake.

Excellent book, very detailed and full of color photos.......1999-02-24
Excellent book, everything we could have wanted. Great use of color photos and very detailed in price and description. Wish all books about this topic could resemble this one.
If you collect this dinnerware then it is a must. Excellent........1998-10-03
I have been collecting the dinnerware since 1990. My mother had it back in the 60's and 70's. This book is excellent and very helpful. My daughter wrote the publisher and the publisher gave my number to the author and also sent pictures of my collection to Barbara and Barbara called my daughter. What a surprise that was to her. They spoke of the pieces we have and the pieces she would like to have. Since then we have almost doubled my collection. She inspired us and we went to Crooksville, Ohio and toured the Museum in 1997 and shopped in the town north of Crooksville where we bought several pieces of the dinnerware that I did not have. I now have over 700 pieces of the Mirrored Brown House and Garden Dinnerware. I am real proud of my collection and this book is a great way to see the pieces that are out there somewhere. Good Luck in finding the pieces you need too! They are getting harder and harder to find. If you would like to talk to me about my collection you may e-mail me. I will welcome your questions. Thank you Barbara for the terriffic book. Diana Best - Columbus, Ga.
From the author...........1997-09-19
My book is a must for collectors of Hull Pottery dinnerware; as well as the antique dealers who need to keep up-to-date on antique values. I attempted to provide a comprehensive overview of the dinnerware lines known as 'House n' Garden'. All the various colors and molds are shown in color photos along with the dates of manufacture.
Some inside information: My photograph of choice for the cover of the book was rejected by the publisher as too much like the 'House n' Garden's' magazine covers...but if you look on inside next to 'About the Author' the lovely picture of my favorite piece, the duck casserole, is displayed in a dinnerware setting on a red-checkered tablecloth! The photo was taken in my kitchen!
This dinnerware was as common as American Apple Pie until the mid 1980's. Now it has become very difficult to find and more expensive than even I would have imagined a few years ago!
I'm not entirely happy with the layout at the end of the book and would have done it differently had I the op

More than two decades were spent in writing and producing Hortus Third. Hortus Third is for advanced horticulturists and others interested in cultivated plants, including horticultural and garden writers, gardeners, nurserymen, landscape architects, botanists, and professional scientists in universities, botanical gardens, extension services, and government.
Customer Reviews:
One of the most important reference books I own........2001-11-27
Hortus Third isn't perfect. I wish it had more drawings and I wish it included more non-cultivated plants.
That said, Hortus Third is probably the most important garden/botany reference book I own. I am a professional garden writer & speaker (author of Allergy-Free Gardening) and Hortus is one book I turn to almost daily. I now and then do find some things in it that I don't completely agree with, but by and large it is very accurate.
Hortus is an expensive book, and not really one for the casual gardener, but for those whose interest is deep, it is worth the money--and then some.
My own copy of Hortus Third is pretty well dog-eared by now from so much use. I have given it only 4 stars as a rating, and that is because I, like many, wish it included more natives, but still, there is no other book quite like it and it is a very useful, important reference that I simply could not do without.
The BEST plant book available!.......2000-03-28
If you're *seriously* interested in plants (i.e., a plant "nerd")and love learning about the technicalities of plant families, similarities, differences, etc., then this book is for you. It's not for wimps! It's fascinating to study, and a great read if plants are your world.

Even better than expected! .......2007-07-26
I was afraid that this book would be too over the top for an average decorator like me---but it wasn't!
The author has done a wonderful job at showing the reader all the various FRANCH styles:.... not only the more classic French styles, but also the more natural (Cottage) French style of decorating.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book, and I will certainly refer to this book over and over again.
Wonderful and timeless.......2007-02-05
Twelve years after its first publication, Cheryl MacLachlan's Bringing It Home: France is still engaging and reassuringly practical. Not only does she provide detailed instructions on how to achieve authentic French interiors for all budgets--not just chateaux or upscale "French country"--her book also contains a wealth of information about related topics, such as four common fabrics (toile, jacquard, petit point, and provencal prints) and how to set a French table.
In researching the design and decoration of French houses, I've found this book to be far and away the most useful reference.
A beautiful way of living.......2004-05-30
I've had this book for a few years now and it has regularly provided me with inspiration. I bought it when I moved into my first apartment and was obsessed with french country style. I referred to it a year or two later for recipes when I learned the importance and the pleasure of foods made with seasonal, organic, whole ingredients. And this evening I am referring to it for tips on my upcoming country wedding and am reading about how to serve dinner and the art of receiving. And perhaps in a few more years (or several more!) I will re-read the section on children and family with yet another new outlook. This book has been a wonderful resource!
one of the best decorating books.......2003-04-23
I have a lot of decorating books, and I am not a huge fan of french interior, but this book is great! It is full of photos of classy decorated rooms, the colors are so tastefull and it makes you wanna go and redecorate your place until it looks like the rooms in this book. It is worth having it and I still go back and look at it, beacause it is sooo cool.
Beautifully written........2002-01-19
The author of this book has a lovely way with words and weaves a spell in her book about French Style living. The experience that this American lady acquires during her lengthy stay in France is beautifully executed in her descriptions of French Decor, dining, traditions, and the lifestyle of the French in general. This book is one of the favorites in my collection.

Book Description
Beate Passow visited the last generation of Chinese women with bound feet, the so-called lotuslillies. The vivid photographs authentically document a social-historically grown custom shortly before its disappearance. Passow shows these now elderly women in all their dignity and pride. They are captured in their traditional home surroundings as well as in today's China: in front of a swimming pool, in a hotel lobby and, surprisingly, at a billiard table.

Touted as a Ball Four for the new millennium, Jose Canseco's Juiced promises to expose not only the rampant use of performance-enhancing substances in baseball (with steroids replacing the amphetamines of Bouton's day), but the painfully human flaws of its heroes as well. A steroid devotee since the age of 20, Canseco goes beyond admitting his own usage to claim that with the tacit approval of the league's powers-that-be he acted as baseball's ambassador of steroids and is therefore indirectly responsible for "saving" the game.
Chief among his claims is that he introduced Mark McGwire to steroids in 1988 and that he often injected McGwire while they were teammates. According to Canseco, steroids and human growth hormones gave McGwire and Sammy Sosa (whose own usage was "so obvious, it was a joke") the strength, stamina, regenerative ability, and confidence they needed for a record-setting home run duel often credited with restoring baseball's popularity after the 1994 strike. Although he devotes a lot of ink to McGwire, Canseco envisions himself as a kind of Johnny Steroidseed, spreading the gospel of performance enhancement, naming a number of players that he either personally introduced to steroids or is relatively certain he can identify as fellow users. Because Canseco plays fast and loose with some of the facts of his own career he provides fodder for those looking to damage his credibility, but in many ways questions of public and personal perception are what raise the book beyond mere vitriolic tell-all. Those willing to heed his request and truly listen to what he has to say will find Juiced to be an occasionally insightful meditation on the workings of public perception and a consistently interesting character study. --Shane Farmer
Book Description
The book that changed baseball forever
For years, Jose Canseco was one of the most intimidating hitters in the Major Leagues. The embodiment of speed and power, he was the first player in Major League history to steal forty bases and hit forty home runs in a single season. Off the field, his personal life was just as outrageous, with tales of his out-of-control antics spilling off sports pages and into gossip columns. But Canseco also harbored one of Major League Baseball's darkest secrets: steroids. In Juiced, he comes clean about this wild past, sharing the unbelievable truth about baseball's steroid addiction and how this onetime taboo has spread to every locker room in the big leagues. Entertaining, raucous, and unforgettable, Canseco takes you beneath the veneer of Major League Baseball, demonstrating how big muscles and performance-enhancing drugs have changed the rules of the game forever.
Customer Reviews:
The Godfather of Steroids.......2007-07-18
When I was 10 years old, every kid I knew had a McGwire/Canseco "Bash Brothers" poster on their wall. McGwire went on to have a Hall of Fame caliber career, while Canseco never really fulfilled initial expectations. At least Canseco admits here that he was an average player who never would have made it in the big leagues without steroids. That's the most refreshing thing about this book: He has no apologies. In a day and age when every player that tests positive points fingers at everyone but themselves, it's nice to hear at least one professional athlete stand up for his actions.
Canseco's motives and honesty were rightly questioned when this book was released, but a couple of years later exposes such as "The Game of Shadows" have proven that Canseco's claims may not be as exaggerated as previously thought.
The writing level of this book is strictly third-grade, apparently written without the assistance of a ghost writer. The book could have been improved by a ghost writer or editor willing to fact-check and do some investigative legwork to lend credibility to Canseco's hyperbole.
Enjoyable, but fairly shallow........2007-05-30
Although this book sparked bitter debate and endless controversy, its contents are not actually that surprising or, if you'll pardon the pun, juicy. Canseco is of course not nearly the bad guy he was made out to be, although I don't think he entirely disliked being a villain. It seems like he brags quite a bit when it comes to women and his material possessions, but it's very likely just a case of him being truthful. I had to keep reminding myself that insecure people such as Jose often feel a great need to boast to others. You might dislike whistle-blowers and view steroids as cheating, but illegal substances are more a part of sports than the average fan will ever know or care about. The media wants us to believe this is a crisis, but if everyone is cheating, is anyone cheating? Overall, I guess I have a better opinion of Jose Canseco after reading 'Juiced' than I once did; he probably has killed any and all of his slim Hall of Fame chances, and I respect that sacrifice. But he didn't kill anyone. His 'patients' hit him up for a 'roids 101 class and reaped great monetary rewards. He's got a beautiful daughter, a great bank account, and his health. Why should any of us have a problem with that? I had some problems with his endless racism theories, as it just makes him look foolish. And he claims that he was run out of baseball because they wanted to shut him up, when such action is the very thing that would prompt a tell-all such as this. Who wants to bet he received a few calls from teams but that he probably wanted too much money? Much like steroids, it happens all the time.
Jose Conseco is right on.......2007-05-24
Jose Conseco writes an excellent article as life in the Major leagues. His stories are concise and to the point. The object of this book, it not to tell someone how to play better, but rather what life can be like in the Majors. Also, Jose is not the bad guy he is now days considered to be. He was a scapegoat for the commissioner of baseball. Often he describes how the media and baseball can play politics and destroy an otherwise great career. His chapter on umpires is, in fact, exactly how I found it to be when I played and very informative. The book is entertaining and forthright and explains how the "haves" and "have nots" fare in the Majors. Highly recommended reading. His excuse for using steroids is weak, but overall, you can see how things basically destroyed one of the best Cuban hitters to ever step in the batter' box. Great book.
A Baseball Expose'.......2007-04-12
Jose Canseco exposes the baseball players he says used steroids during their careers. Although you may not be surprised at the names he floats as users, you may enjoy his personal stories.
Average?.......2007-03-14
I would say average book due to the content has mostly come out to be true. Just written like a fourth grader wrote it
