Based on a symposium sponsored by the Environmental Division of the American Chemical Society, Perchlorate in the Environment is the first comprehensive book to address perchlorate as a potable water contaminant. The two main topics are: analytical chemistry (focusing on ion chromatography and electrospray ionization mass spectrometry), and treatment or remediation. Also included are topics such as ion exchange, phytoremediation, bacterial reduction of perchlorate, bioreactors, and in situ bioremediation. To provide complete coverage, background chapters on fundamental chemistry, toxicology, and reulatory issues are also included. The authors are environmental consultants, government researchers, industry experts, and university professors from a wide array of disciplines.

Of course I gave my own book five stars. This book is largely the proceedings of a symposium held at the fall 1999 American Chemical Society meeting. It is the first book published on perchlorate as an environmental contaminant since its widespread discovery in 1997. Topics range from toxicology to analytical techniques to treatment/remediation. The book starts with the fundamental chemistry of perchlorate and moves on through other topics. I have encouraged chapter authors to make their works readable to a general science audience. Relative to its content, the price is fair; it's a pretty thick book for the money. This book is not for everyone. It's geared more for researchers and regulators. I have tried to make it as complete as the science would allow at the time. Many studies involving perchlorate are underway, and many papers are being published in the literature. However, this book will give consultants, researchers, and students a good overview of what was known in August 1999. Certainly, there have been advances since then, but the information remains valuable and applicable now. A lot of people put a lot of work into putting this book together, and I think it shows.

This booklet is a concise summary of important places to visit. It is not intended as a detailed book, but rather as the actual information you'll be holding in your pocket while doing your sightseeing. For planning ahead in detail, I recommend go to the internet.
Great map included with very detailed information

Helpful and concise.......2001-03-02

This is a very helpful guide that we found organized and well-indexed. You won't go wrong with this if you're visiting Amsterdam.

5-star map; 3-star book........1999-12-09

The map which comes with this book is nearly perfect - it has all the tram and bus lines except the ones changed since '98 (very little changes) and it is more accurate, more detailed, and includes more of the city than the maps available in the VVV (tourist information) in Amsterdam. I spent the summer in Amsterdam and this map was indispensable, especially since I was not living in the city center and my apartment was located off most maps.

The book, on the other hand, is great for listing ideas of things to see and do, but does not actually 'review' anything - the author basically seems to think _everything_ in Amsterdam is absolutely wonderful and worth seeing. This is a terrific attitude if you are there for a long time, but if you are planning a short visit, try to read one of the more critical books as well so you won't waste your time and miss the best things. Also, the book has not been updated recently, so several of the restaurants (vegetarian ones mostly) are no longer open (but, to be fair, I could not find _any_ guidebooks for Amsterdam in which all the vegetarian restaurants were still in business, including a pamphlet published only a few months before, since several had just gone under.)

Very Good Map.......1998-10-01

The map is excellent, very detailed, down to every street. And it's easy to read. The guide is brief, but helpful. Gives most of the essential information, all the museums and major attractions. We decided to order a second copy, in case our party wants to split up!

This price guide is an accurate and excelent resource for the serious collector. But, for the inexperienced person, there is not enough information provided concerning quality of the records and sleeves. I would definately suggest this but would also suggest a supplimentary book or other resource for record condition evaluations.

Picture This.......2005-10-07

I bought this book years ago but only just now read it cover to cover. It allowed me to successfully recapture the inspiration I originally felt when reading about CBGB punk rock. Over the years I've become bored with the subject and needed a fresh perspective to rekindle my interest. The book also made me realize that I don't have many albums by NYC punk bands so I've placed a large order for all the debut albums I could not afford as a teenager. Many of these albums will still be new to me.

captures the era with style and substance.......2001-03-29

Great photos for a well-needed revisit to a particularly cool scene.

I've been feeling nostalgic. Am I no longer young? Am I a different person now? It seems only yesterday that I was sitting in clubs watching the likes of The Ramones, The Clash, the B52s and the Talking Heads...

But wait. There are solutions for a revisit. Last summer I packed my wife and seven year old daughter and went to a triple bill - Psychedelic Furs, GoGo's and B-52s. Way cool. My kid loved it. I kinda felt young. Wasn't quite the same, but...

... now I can sit at home and page through these terrific photographs. Blank Generation Revisited is a perfect way to revisit. Yes, we're older and that scene is long gone, but this book captures the era with style and substance.

this book is not meant to be a great read, it is however a great picture book. excellent pics of the important people who created punk. patti smith, richard hell, just to name 2.

Nice pictures of NYC punk in-crowd in 1970s.......2000-03-01

This is a picture book, and it's got nice pictures. But this is about a few celebrities in the punk and new wave scene in 70s New York. It has virtually no text, and offers almost no insight into the feeling, the sounds, the pulse, the texture of punk and new wave. There are scarcely any fans or everyday people--just some photos of Richard Hell and the like. Few people will relate to this book or be glad that they bought it (and naive punks who think punk=mohawks will be sorely soured). For a much more comprehensive look at this influential music scene, you're better off with Clinton Heylin's __From the Velvets to the Voidoids__.

i enjoy this book because it has great pictures and lets people who don't know a lot about punk rock see what it was all about.
