Fascinating book.......2006-12-17

It's too bad that the most negative review of this book is the one that comes up first in Amazon's list of reviews. That's misleading, and might cause some readers to overlook this book. It's a fun read, can be read in chunks, and offers insights on almost every page.

Great book. Witty and funny. .......2006-06-13

I really have enjoyed this book a lot. Bruce combines his personal expiernce with some very inspiring words. Reading the reviews of the people that didnt liek it as much just makes me laugh. Obviously they havent caught the spirit of the true traveler. You gotta kick back Mr. Vagabond...let life take it where you may. Dont let things trip you up enough to get all huffy and write a bad review just because you think the guys personal expeirence doesnt help you. Jealousy stinks huh? lol.

This guy has such great things to say really. Its an easy read and creates a stirring to go and figure out what the heck he is talking about. Here's some examples:

"You can predict th length of you trip but you must nurture the width and depth of it."

"Life is like photograqphy: we use the negative to develop."

He also talks about going to the top of a building looking out towards a direction that looks interesting and going for a 1 or 2 day trek in that direction. Its great.

Anyway...I liked it.

If there is one thing I know about Bruce Northam it is that he is one busy traveler. Take it from someone who knows him. Bruce has been to every continent (including Antartica) and about 100 countries. Combine this experince with a wit and sarcasm that comes from a lifetime on the road and there you have his masterpiece "Globetrotter Dogma." Sure, it's not the slickest or most complete travel book out there, but it certainly is one amusing and insightful read for anyone who needs a perk in their daily routine! To read this book is simply the ability to live vicariously through the lens of a true travel veteran who's been there and done that. Highly recommended! I can't wait to read his next book ...

Take it easy on the Globetrotter.......2005-10-07

The previous review makes a good point. The book may not hold ultimate truths about globtrotting. However, Bruce Northam believes that the process is truth; that discovery is doctrine. So what if this book ain't Dogma...it's a good travel book and it fits in your backpack.

Dogma (the plural is either dogmata or dogmas) is belief or doctrine held by a religion or any kind of organization to be authoritative. This is a travel book about what Mr Northam has done. He treats the reader like a travel companion. No bad thing.

The writer was more likely striving for globetrotting axioms.

There are some conceptual similarities between dogma and the axioms used as the starting point for logical analysis. Axioms may be thought of as concepts or "givens" so fundamental that disputing them would be unimaginable; dogmata are also fundamental (e.g. "God exists") yet incorporate also the larger set of conclusions that comprise the (religious) field of thought (e.g. "God created the universe").

Axioms are propositions not subject to proof or disproof, or are statements accepted on their own merits. Dogmata might be thought to be more complex, the product of other proofs. Philosophy and theology find ways to evaluate all statements, whether classified as axioms or dogmata.

I absolutely adore herbs. Rosemary, thyme, and lavender are my favorites, but all the others are delectable as well. Emilie Tolley and Chris Mead are the best partnership in the gardening world. Emilie really knows the cultivation of these wonderful growing things, and I adore Chris for his breathtaking photography. Together they created a volume for herb gardeners that is instructive, inspiring, and incredible. A remarkable team, this talented duo illustrate how to create an herb garden that will add to your personal happiness. They introduce us to forty herbs that will saturate your senses but will not try your patience. This is the most inspiring and beautiful herb book I have ever read. This is the book that got me "into"herbs and the herbal lifestyle. It truly changed my life. The pictures are beautiful, and the content is intriguing. Beginning with basic information on growing 40 common herbs, it takes you through beautiful gardens in the U.S. and Europe, Shows gorgeous herbal crafts, and has great herbal recipes. Really a great introduction to the wonders of herbs, but the experienced herbalist would love it too. A definitive herb book!

The best herb book! Covers all aspects1.......1997-10-15

Great ideas, the best recipes, and the decorating is exceptional. I planned my whole holiday party with this book! From start to finish the photos and the text give you all you will ever need to know about herbs and how to display and use them in cooking and decorating. I was honestly surprised that the content was so good. I own quite a few books on herbs and this is the only one I would recommed to someone just starting out or an advanced grower. I have tried so many of their ideas that I feel like I am their test kitchen! Read it and I think you will agree that this book is the best!
