A classical book.......2000-11-22

I work at Universidad de Buenos Aires, my main is Food Mycology. I have being using the "Compendium of Soil Fungi" for several years as a very useful tool for determining fungi; particullarly, complementing the classical literature in my research field. I think this book was very carefully thought and written. The authors have introduced each taxa sintetically, but pointing out the more important morphological aspects to be taken into account. The keys and descriptions are practical and accurate ones respectively; the illustrations and photographies are very clear. In addition, physiological aspects were treated in extenso for a lot of taxa. The bibliographical support is actually wide, and takes one of the two Compendium's volumes. In conclussion, I feel this book, which was written in 1980, has a place within the classics.

An insight into the secluded world of the Forbidden City.......2001-10-02

I rather enjoyed this biography on Reginald Johnston. Despite what the other reviewer has said (quite funny), I doubt very much that Johnston would have been able to "mandhandle Pu Yi" as he must have been closely supervised by his minders, some of whom were eunuchs and may have had similar tendencies.
An uninteresting man, with ambiguous tendencies, thrust into the limelight just by rubbing shoulders with the last Emperor, Johnston did write a couple of travel books on China which are probably his more enduring legacy

If you want to find out what kind of a brainwashing, low down, good for nothing person Reginald Johnston is like, then you need to read this book. This old cockraoch constantly used the kid emperor for his own needs. Johnston taught the young emperor about homosexuality as Johnston was a homosexual. Johnston should go down in history for a child molester and thief of children.

I purchased this book as a gift for a friend that will be my traveling companion to China in the spring. Phenomenial photography! This is an exquisite "coffee table" pictorial guide of China protraying the vast county in its diversity and the book intensified our excitement for our upcoming trip.

This is the best cat behavior book I've ever read. Instead of going into irrelevant explanations about why cats do the things they do, Ms. Church gives practical solutions for behavior problems. I bought a lot of books to try to solve my cat's inappropriate litter box behavior. This is the one did it.

Simply and understandably written for anyone of any age, this book, with its attractive cover and informative anectodes and information, is a must-have for any and all cat lover book shelves. Not quite as extensive as this author's book, Housecat (Howell Book House), yet great for just what you need if looking for basic answers. This book includes information on such topics as why to keep your cat indoors, how to keep your indoor cat happy, behavior and training, health, nutrition, scratching and old age, etc. Read this book and others by this author, and keep your cat happy. The first thing a book about color in the garden ought to have is big pictures and lots of 'em. This book is positively unstinting: full page and even double page wonders (muzzle yourself; although the paper quality seems good, it would be a pity to sully the pages with drooling).

The seldom-under-opinionated Christopher Lloyd provides text as colorful as the photos, so brace for throwaway remarks about mundane dahlia leaves and not being snobby about dandelion flowers. There is a reassuring coziness, too, as Lloyd reviews his delights and prejudices about gardening in general and on his own expansive plot.

Here's a Christopher Lloyd lecture and slide show to peruse at your leisure. Just like such events, the book is thoroughly informative and completely entertaining.

Essential reading for all serious gardeners.......2005-11-28

The Adventurous Gardener provides a brilliant gardener's take on any number of practical, as well as aesthetic, judgments. The first 11 chapters concern maintenance and propagation, such as "Unusual Ways with Rose Cuttings," "Maintaining Mature Hedging," and "Some Reactions to Cutting Back" (which covers the results of radical pruning on scores of genuses of shrubs and trees).

The next 8 chapters cover trees and shrubs, Lloyd's experience and opinions of hundreds of species and cultivars, and the best ways, culturally and aesthetically, to use them in the garden. The rest of the book covers a variety of herbaceous plants, design concepts, the theories of Gertrude Jekyll, "Planning a Border," you name it. Of course, the book, at 250 pages, is not comprehensive. For that matter, Lloyd's "The Well-Tempered Garden" is in a sense basically the same book, except that there is very little overlap. Each is a series of essays which stands on its own. (Similarly, the estate of the late Henry Mitchell has 3 such books out, made up of his newspaper gardening columns; but Mitchell's columns are shorter, more about literary style than detail, and his 3 books overlap each other considerably.)

This book's greatest weakness: it only has 18 low-resolution black & white photos. These are in the book's center, and do little to illustrate the text. So in order to follow many of the chapters, which concern specific varieties of, say, crabapple trees, or concern combinations of plants, you will have to have the "A-Z Encyclopedia of Garden Plants" or a similar reference at hand. That said, this keeps the book small and dirt cheap. I suppose I could, for lack of hundreds of glossy color photos, rate the book less than the perfect 5 stars, but I can't see criticizing a book for not being what it is not, especially when it is so good at being what it is.

Christopher Lloyd's love of and pride in gardening is evident in every word of this often-republished gardening classic. It's not an encyclopedic text, as much of it is specifically applicable to Lloyd's damp English climate, but as he says in his new introduction, "We should always keep an open mind." Gardeners in many climates will do well with the plants Lloyd loves, and everyone can follow his advice on the basics of growing and propagating healthy plants.

Chock full of advice............2001-12-19

THE WELL-TEMPERED GARDEN is a classic book, filled with all sorts of advice from one of Britain's leading garden experts--Christopher Lloyd. Lloyd is responsible for Great Dixter, one of the premier gardens in England. WELL-TEMPERED GARDEN was first published in 1973, and this version is the new and updated and somewhat expanded version.

Whether or not the inexperienced gardener can use this book is debatable. GARDEN contains tons of information, but the paperback contains no photographs. Unless you are an experienced gardener who can picture the plant varieties Lloyd discusses, I would think GARDEN would prove more confusing than not. I am an experienced gardener and I found many interesting tips.

Lloyd is a plantsman, and he has a good deal to say about many of the plants generally found in gardens in the temporate regions of America as well as England, but his discussion is confined to examples of plants grown at Great Dixter (past and present, failures and successes). I struggled through the text, trying to read it like a 'book', and then decided it made a better reference work. If you're interested so-called 'tricks of the trade' regarding garden staples such as tulips, peonies, pansies, primulas, or climbers, shrubs, and roses, you can find the item of interest in the index, locate it in the text and read about it.

Lloyd shares his accumulated wisdom about a large assortement of plants, providing the sort of information one usually finds only in specialty books on particular plants, not in a general gardening book. For example, he says, "What is an azalea?" He then goes on to discuss azaleas in terms of their botanical classification (they are rhodendrons), notes that there are many kinds of azalea, and suggests that one sort or another may work better depending on what you are attempting to do.

Many of Lloyd's comments are better suited to the gardener in England (lots of stuff on roses). However, he also discusses plants of interest to Americans. For example, his text concerning Buddleias is quite relevant for gardeners in the mid-Atlantic region. Lloyd suggests Buddleias are in the top flight of second-rate shrubs. They grow fast but are sadly sketetal in winter. However, he suggests, they are indispensible. He then goes on to discuss the different kinds of buddleias you might want to grow. I don't think he quite says why they are indispensible, but anyone who knows their colloquial name 'butterfly bush' knows why.

Christopher Lloyd -- organized, yet still colorful.......2001-04-12

Lloyd's normal rambling, storytelling style doesn't suffer at all from being organized into this alphabetical presentation of his favorite plants. In fact, I like him this way. Some plants get a quick brush off. Some get rich detail. Even the ones I'll never grow are fun and interesting to read about.

He includes names of favored varieties. Unlike with many "Euro-gardening" books, I have been pleased to find those varieties available by mail and even locally (from a good nursery specializing in perennials). There are exceptions. I liked the Dr. Seuss look of Helianthus Salicifolius in one of Lloyd's photos. Most sites I found by searching for it on web were in foreign languages. There's hope, however, as it's apparently known as "willow-leaved sunflower and rock sunflower" in Kansas. If it doesn't get to Ohio from Europe, maybe it will get here from Kansas.
