Excellent Teaching Tool.......2001-04-20
I am a second grade teacher and have used this book with my class. It is an excellent teaching tool to help students understand the growth cycle of a dandelion. This book shows the journey of 7 dandelion seeds. No two take the same path but most grow into dandelion plants. Students see dandelions all around during the summer but probably don't know much about how they grow or about a their stages of life. I lent this book to teachers who even found out things about dandelions that they did not know prior to reading! It is an excellent resource to go along with a study of plants. The story is delightful but teaches as well. I strongly reccomend this story to teach about plants or just for reading enjoyment!
Best Book Yet!.......2000-03-28
I'm pregnant and have been in search for a good book to read to my baby while still in the womb. Mission completed...and successful! My search was done when I came across this wonderful book, along with the Dandelion Seed, another great one. Simple, cute, and entertaining, this book was exactly what I wanted, and I'm sure my child will cherish this book for years to come.

Book Description
It's a very hot day and the Mole Sisters need a nice cool breeze. They start to fan themselves. Then a dandelion pipes up that he's hot too! Soon all the other dandelions want to be fanned as well. Now the Mole Sisters are covered in dandelion fluff... until a nice cool breeze comes along. "It's just what we needed." Swoosh, swoosh. "A nice cool breeze!"
About the series:
The Mole Sisters make the most of each day. Full of fun, imagination, and quiet confidence, these are small creatures with very big hearts. Their unfaltering optimism is contagious, bringing smiles to faces everywhere. With bright, lush colored-pencil artwork, Roslyn Schwartz conveys the Mole Sisters' love for life with a minimum of text that is easy to follow and invites preschoolers to join in with its rhythmic cadences.

Customer Reviews:
Info...liberally seasoned with author's high self-opinion.......2004-02-29
I bought this book in anticipation of visiting Normandy. On first glance, it looked ideal for my purposes (traveling alone with lots of time to meander). Once into the book, I saw that few of the towns have maps--even maps of cities'-centers would be helpful.
More than that, though, was the condescending tone he used when discussing holy places (i.e., referring to the devotion to Saint Thèrése of Lisieux as "a cult"). The author's inflated sense of self was reflected in nearly every section of this book, and I soon relegated it to the bottom of my suitcase: I wanted information; not editorializing. For the rest of my trip, I did quite well with small town maps (free at any tourism office).

Book Description
When popular equine photographer Barbara Livingston released her book Old Friends in 2002 to profile and honor Thoroughbred racing's beloved "seniors" through her words and photographs, fan reaction was immediate: "When is Old Friends 2 coming out?!" The original book, now out of print, remains popular with collectors. A Lexington, Kentucky, area equine organization even took on the name "Old Friends" to give r etired racehorses a final home. So, now, Livingston is back with More Old Friends, featuring 175 color photographs of some of racing's most revered retirees.
Customer Reviews:
Great photographs.......2007-10-11
Ms. Livingston makes her living with her photos and this book will show you why. The much-too-brief stories that accompany her photos will make you smile and cry. Wonderful companion book to her original "Old Friends," which I now wish I owned!
Barbara Livingston does it again!.......2007-10-04
More Old Friends is a gorgeous book; heartfelt, beautiful and intriguing.
Barbara Livingston is a masterful equine historian. Her work is so much more than a tribute to these senior horses; it is important history. These Old Friends will never be forgotten. Their stories and their softly graying faces are captured forever on the pages of these wonderful Old Friends books.
I hope Barbara keeps making Old Friends books. They are treasures!
Thank you, Barbara, for another incredible Old Friends book. I can't wait for the next one!
Barbara Livingston's More Old Friends.......2007-10-02
Barbara Livingston has once again provided us with a superb tribute to many horses whose sterling performances thrilled us so often during their all too short careers.
She has done this, as she always does, with her camera and writing talents. No one, and I mean no one, captures the essence of the horse with a camera like Barbara. Her camera bores into the soul of the animal and brings out its finest qualities. Only an artist can turn photography into poetic expression.
When you consider the longevity associated with other sports i.e. Willie Mays playing from 1951 to 1973, basketball players who have 82 games per season - and football players like Bret Favre who is playing in his 17th season, it is striking to learn that legendary horses such as Secretariat performed no more than 42 minutes over a two year period (21 races) and Seattle Slew no more than 28 minutes in 17 races over a three year racing career.
The brevity of the career of the racing thoroughbred inevitably leaves us on the short side of knowledge of the racer, and memories of his or her accomplishments. In other words, the tradition of baseball, basketball and football is perpetuated in large part by the longevity of those who played the game. The numbers of the greats from each team's past adorn the stadiums or arenas where the games are played. Their tradition is palpable.
Barbara's book does much to retain and document racing's tradition. It reminds us of many great horses and the races they won - and it provides the only record of what became of these titans in their later years.
If anyone has ever wondered about what happened to Personal Ensign and Winning Colors after their 1988 Breeders' Cup struggle, all one has to do is consult this book.
The radical inconsistency of Terlingua who ran exceptional races and also poor ones is recounted here. She, as the dam of Storm Cat, will be immortal as one of the names in pedigrees that will extend for generations to come. Her beauty and challenging disposition will likewise endure because Barbara captured it in her photographs. While her racing record can easily be documented in the past performances of the Racing Form, Barbara provides her story, giving form and content to the mere recital of racing statistics. Barbara also provides the only record of this great racer and producer in her senior years.
Many of the horses included in the book had days which racing fans will never forget. When called upon to summon their talent and courage against other horses who were equally determined to win, they did, and won often. Their achievements should be readily available - not just found on the collected parched newspaper articles that recounted their courage the next day - and which time has long forgotten.
The passing of such knowledge of great achievements from one generation to another is what tradition is all about. Books like Barbara's are rare in racing and play a large role in this process.
Equally important is the love and respect lavished on these horses by their connections. There is a bond between owner and horse - between caretaker and horse - that grows with time - whether the horse is a champion or just a beloved member of the family. Barbara captures that bond in her photographs and articles on each horse - and it glows in her hands.
If you have cheered your horse down the stretch and marveled at the beauty and courage of the animal, you will want this book.
Everyone knows that no matter how loudly you cheer, it has absolutely nothing to do with the outcome of the race. If you come to realize that you shout encouragement because the excitement wells up in you so that you cannot remain a silent observer, and you must publicly identify with the horse you want to win, you will want this book.
I must confess that I have a horse in the book. Urigo is mine, and I am thrilled that he was included. But, whether or not he was included, this is a book to restore some of the great tradition of racing which is being lost.
This book tells us what became of our heroes of yesterday. These horses form a large part of racing's tradition. It is as great a tradition as exists in sports - and if you would like to remember it again, or feel a part of it, or learn about it, you will want this book.
Norris E. Gelman
Book Description
When famous racehorses retire from the track, some remain in the spotlight while others eventually fade into obscurity. But the fondness that racing fans feel for some of these horses never dies.
Customer Reviews:
A fave in my library.......2005-04-14
Old Friends sits right next to Hillebrand's Seabiscuit in my equine library. It is a modern day classic.
These noble horses get loving and magnificent treatment from Livingston's prose and photographic talent.
Old Friends is a joy; a treasure. No racing enthusiast should be without this incredible book.
A must-have for any horse fan........2005-01-06
Barbara D. Livingston, Old Friends: Visits with My Favorite Thorougbreds (Eclipse Press, 2002)
Reviewing books of photography often makes me feel guilty. As brilliant as someone like Romain Slocombe or Joel-Peter Witkin (for example) is, and as good as his books are, it seems kind of cheating to put a big photography book on one's list of books read for a given year. After all, how long does it really take to get through a book of photography?
Not so with Old Friends. While it is, in fact, packed with the gorgeous photographs of horses for which Barbara Livingston is so deservedly well-known, every horse in here also has a small essay from Ms. Livingston, making this more a trip down memory lane than a photography book. Some of the horses in here are some of the best-known horses on the continent (Spectacular Bid, for example), some are well-known in their region of the States (Zuppardo's Prince, the leading stallion in Louisiana most years), and some even the most hardcore horseplayer has long forgotten, or never heard of in the first place. Livingston treats them all with equal dignity, and by the end of the book, we feel like we know these horses, too.
A number of the horses here, since (and in a few cases before) the book was published, have died, and any of the rest of them are going to succumb to the ravages of old age within the next few years. But while some of their names will live in the lore of horse racing forever, Livingston has here ensured that many of the others will also not be forgotten.
A fantastic book, and well worth having. **** ½
Beautiful and Moving.......2003-09-08
This is a wonderful book! The photographs are beautiful and the text is honest and touching. Each vignette makes you feel as if you are at the farm with the author that day. This is a must have for every horse lover. I recommend a full box of tissues every time you read this book. It is not a sad book but very moving and full of love an drespect for the wonderful horses represented here. As many of us horse savvy folks know...these are the lucky ones. I Just love it!
Very moving and honest.......2003-08-05
I bought this book after hearing about the death of the great Ferdinand.
This book shows many of the great ones that have come along, many that are still breeding and many that are living out the rest of their days in quiet comfort. Livingston is a fan of all of these horses, writing as if each one is her own. I read this book in one sitting, crying and laughing all at the same time.
I can't help but think of all the horses that didn't make it, the horse that met the same end as Ferdinand. The one's that were bred for speed but couldn't quite turn it on at the right time. The horses in this book were and are all very, very lucky indeed.
Wonderful book, lovely lady.......2003-06-11
I had the pleasure of meeting the author at Gulfstream Park . She was doing a book-signing at the Florida Derby and I was lucky enough to be in the right place at the right time. She is a kind and gracious lady. She took her time with everyone who approached her. I was already planning to purchase book and was so happy to get an autographed copy! The pictures are incredible and the grace and dignity she conveys with them is perfect for such beautiful animals as thoroughbred horses. I recommend this book to anyone who loves horses or horse racing. As Ms Livingston signed in my book : Track fever is a good thing!"

Book Description
When a greeting card just isn't enough...send something unique. It's as simple and inexpensive to mail as a card--but it's much more: an entire book to keep and treasure forever! Light as a feather, wonderfully personal, and colorfully visual, these small, self-enclosed little volumes go right into the mail with no wrapping required. Just write your dedication on the inside, address it on the back, seal the flap, stick on a stamp, and put it in the mailbox. Give one for holidays, for birthdays and anniversaries, for messages of cheer, or for any occasion when you want to remember friends and family. And, there's truly something for everyone: expressive dogs and cats for the animal lover; lush roses for the gardener; Monet's paintings for the art buff; a wine companion for the oenophile; and tributes to coffee, tea, chocolate, and more for the home chef--and Belle Époque nudes for...well, you know who! Each is a lasting value--for the recipient and the giver!

So many vastly different types of cats!.......2006-10-19
There are so many breeds of cats and their characteristics are so different that sometimes the only thing they have in common are their basic shape of a head, body and four legs. There are longhair cats and no-hair cats. There are cats with long tails and cats with no tails. There are mild cats and then there are wild cats. There are some really big cats and some really small cats. Each of these breeds appears in the photographs of this collection. Generally, there are two photos of the breed, one with the cat solo and another where a human is somehow interacting with it. The photography is excellent, making this a book that all lovers of cats and those simply interested in learning more about the various breeds will enjoy.
cats are on their own...........2005-08-28
Yann Arthus-Bertrand is an excellent photographer, known for a unique series "Earth from above" as well as for books dedicated to dogs and horses. I bought "Cats" because I am owned by a cat and also because my mother owns another book by Arthus-Bertrand "Dogs". Both books are designed on a similar plan, namely numerous breeds are presented with a brief description, informative and fun, next to a picture of a perfect breed representative with his/her owner(s). The quality of animal pictures is superb in both books, but it is the essential difference in natures of the animals that makes one book a smashing success and another somewhat disappointing. Dogs present striking similarity, or contrast with their owners, each picture looks like a family portrait, - nothing of a kind occurs in "Cats". These are the pictures of gorgeous animals - and different people, owners and cats could be shuffled without any damage to the overall impression. By contrast, looking at the pictures in "Dogs", one can't help but think:"This lady couldn't have had anybody else but Maltese". Nevertheless, photos in "Cats" are exquisite, texts on various breeds are informative and fun and the book surely is a nice addition to a cat lover's library. As for depth of cats' nature - well, it remains as impenetrable to humans as ever.
Book Description
You won't find potted petunias or rigid rows of hot-pink impatiens in this gorgeous new book. Instead, Plant Life features 80 luscious photographs of author Valerie Easton's own garden (also seen in Better Homes and Gardens magazine). Drawn from her popular column of the same name in the Seattle Times Pacific Northwest magazine, Plant Life invites the world into Easton's garden, offering readers a personal perspective from a master gardener. Organized around the twelve months, Plant Life covers a wide array of topics including climbing plants, leaves that aren't green, containers, garden paths, pests, and much more. Each chapter contains several essays -- some instructive, others philosophical -- relevant to that time of year, and features a Now in Bloom section focusing on plants at their prime and illustrated with full-color photographs.

Book Description
This volume brings together articles on the cult of the mother-goddess Cybele and her consort Attis, from the emergence of the religion in Anatolia through its expansion into Greece and Italy to the latest times of the Roman Empire and its farthest extent west, the Iberian Peninsula. It combines the work of established scholars with that of young researchers in the field, and represents a truly international perspective. The reader will find treatment inter alia of Cybele's emasculated priests, the Galli; the dissemination of Cybele-cult through the harbour city, Miletus; the cult of Cybele in Ephesus; the rock-cut sanctuary of Cybele at Akrai in Sicily; the competition between the Cybele-cult and Christianity; and the role of Attis in Neo-Platonic philosophy.
