Book Description
This book shows numerous methodologies for collecting, processing and analyzing data from natural area, illustrating it in applications to Mexico's Iztaccíhuatl-Popocatépetl National Park. The book is written for ecologists, geographers, graduate biology students and natural resource managers. It therefore responds directly and primarily to their viewpoints and objectives. However, since ecosystem management and decisions about natural-area preservation take place within socioeconomic and political environments that are dynamic and plural, conflicts with those objectives are sure to arise. Therefore, the last chapter goes beyond managers' objectives and viewpoints per se to explore and respond to potential conflicts.
CD-Rom is included in the book.

Customer Reviews:
Downhill.......2004-03-13
I have always thought this was the best guidebook series going, but since Richard Saul Wurman sold the series to Harper Collins the books have been getting sloppy. The writing has been taken over by "updaters" who don't check the facts. The updater's name doesn't appear until the outside back cover (in this case a woman named Linda Peck).
For instence: in the section on the Fairmont Hotel (p. 84) the writer states that the Crown Room has wonderful buffets, brunches and dinners. In fact, the Crown Room has been closed to the public for the last four years -favoring private functions and banquets which presumably bring in more money per square foot.
Excited that the book said the Crown Room was open, I e-mailed the Fairmont to make sure. They replied that it is still used only for private functions, with the exception of "holiday buffets" such as Easter, Mother's Day, and Christmas. (In other words, special days when they can fill the entire square footage.)
I know that things change in cities, and guide books have trouble keeping up with all the store-front restaurants that open and close. But we're talking about one of the world's most famous hotels -not to mention one of the world's best views which has now been denied to both guests and the public.
On page 21, a paragraph about the War Memorial Opera House says "(See the plan on the next page.)" The problem is that the plan is directly below that paragraph -not on the next page. If you take the writer at her word and turn the page, you are looking at a diagram of the Louise M. Davies Symphony Hall instead.
Richard Saul Wurman's entire life has been dedicated to accurate communication. He has worked too hard to build this series to see new editions jammed together without proper proof reading.
Oh yes, with modern printing technology Harper's can just as easily print entire articles in the key color -just as Wurman did. The books look cheapened by having only the paragraph titles in color.
Best of the city guidebooks ever!!!!.......2003-10-30
There are a lot of guidebooks out there for every major city in North America, but I always find the Access Guides useful, as well as helpful and up to date. So many books are geared toward the foreign tourist with information that you can hardly use. At last here is a book that give honest looks at San Francisco hotels, shops, and restaurants. Keep up the good work..
Compact, versatile, and valid.......2002-09-07
A San Francisco resident since 1976, I still rely on each new edition of the Access (and Knopf) Guides to maintain familiarity with other neighbourhoods, and supply out-of-town guests with copies of each.
Use this guide to supplement another one........2000-09-24
Having been to SF a few times before (some years ago), I purchased this guide as my only guide for the city. I didn't want to carry a big heavy book on my weekend trip and, more often than not, I found myself without the information I needed. The typical questions any visitor might have go unanswered and the information is spotty. For instance, the author gives a list of the primary local radio stations, including the radio dial numbers for them, but fails to tell the reader what some of the primary city bus routes are that run in and out of the center of downtown. And yet, looking at the maps throughout the book, you'll see route numbers on many of the streets depicted, but these refer to bicycle routes, not buses. Really, how many tourists are even going to think about riding a bicycle through probably the hilliest city in the world? The most obvious thing that is lacking is any information about the one thing that any visitor wants to know about: the cable cars (there is mention of the oldstyle electric buses or trolleys). Look in the index under "cable cars", and you won't find it. The basics about the cable car system are missing: what the cable car routes are, where does one get on the cable car (I knew that you can get on one at any stop if it's not full - good luck), and how to pay for the cable car ride (the operater collects the fare or looks at your day pass just before the car leaves the stop).
The restaurant reviews are handy, but again, uneven. My companions were eager to go to Fisherman's Wharf (one place I knew to be such a tourist trap that it was best left unvisited) and have dinner. Once we were there, we found the guide lacking in any mention of the most obvious places to eat in the heart of the Wharf. The author mentions one restaurant, Alioto's, but discounts the rest as simply not worth going to. So we went to Fisherman's Grotto, which I was apprehensive about, but it wasn't bad, certainly not haute cuisine. We were all pleased with what we ordered. I tried the sand dabs, a type of small flat fish caught in the Bay, which were nicely prepared and very delicate: lightly floured and fried in a little butter.
On the plus side: the maps are very handy, and easy to read. I did like the way the book was sectioned-off into the different districts.
Overall, the book is best suited as a supplement to a more thorough guidebook, but not the primary source for your trip. I just can't see how anyone can write a guide book to any city and fail to give information about key places that most tourists will want to know about.
A very helpful city guide book!.......2000-09-16
I went on vacation to San Francisco about a month ago and I needed a book that would guide me to the city. Access San Francisco was extremely informative and helpful. I found some great restaurants, cafés and shopping areas. Of course, it also guided me to China Town and the Golden Gate Bridge. Also, the book tells us the history of San Francisco and the different types of neighborhoods one might want to go to. I loved it. Are you planning on going to San Francisco? If so, buy Access San Francisco. Believe me, it is a tourist's must have!

Book Description
Perennial Gardening in Texas presents its own unique challenges, especially with the state's wide variety of climate zones. This book focuses on individual plants--some 120 species--but also brings with it the expertise of a landscape architect in providing designs that will work both damp and water-scarce areas.
Customer Reviews:
an excellent addition to Texas gardening literature.......2006-08-27
The best new gardening book I've seen in a while. Instead of being a repeat of other high-quality Texas books (Native Texas Plants by Wasowski being the best IMO), a large part of the book is devoted to categorizing the plants by their forms (clumping, trailing, climbing, etc.), their prefered habitat (shade, boggy, etc.), by color, and by their ability to attract bees, birds, and other wildlife to your yard. I found these categorizations to be extremely useful. For further information about the plants, you can then look at the alphabetical listing of all the species mentioned in the book. The pictures in Wasowski's book are better, but the categorizations makes this book more useful for selecting plants for your particular landscape.
Simply beautiful.......2006-02-18
This book offers a mountain of useful information on technical, environmental, and artistic aspects of perennial gardening,
presented in a manner that is simple and understandable, without being condescending.
This could almost be a "coffee table" book, the pictures are so beautiful! There needs to be a paperback version that can be taken outside.
Gardeners (and gardener "wannabes" - like me) all over the midwest can use this book.
Book Description
A perennial garden is an ever-changing source of delight. Each season brings new colors and textures in flowers and foliage. As the years go by, perennial plantings mature and interweave into forms more beautiful and surprising than a season's growth of annuals can ever give. Best of all, a perennial garden can grow almost anywhere with plants suited to local soils, temperatures, and rainfall.
This book is a complete guide to perennial gardening in Texas and similar regions of eastern New Mexico, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, Florida, and the Carolinas. In Part One, Julie Ryan offers a historical sketch of cottage gardens and perennial borders, with a sampler of some of their modern variations. In Part Two, she defines the major ecological regions of Texas and, with words and color photographs, takes you on a tour of lovely public and private gardens in each region.
You'll find all the "how to" information for creating your own garden in Part Three. Ms. Ryan describes and pictures over 300 flowering perennials, bulbs, foliage plants, and old roses suitable for Texas gardens, with lists of companion annuals, vines, shrubs, and small trees. Accompanying charts provide quick reference to each plant's preferred regions and cultivation requirements. In addition, Ms. Ryan discusses how to design a garden and select plants, prepare the beds, and deal with garden pests. She concludes with substantial lists of resources, including mail-order suppliers of perennials, bulbs, and old roses.
Customer Reviews:
One of the most helpful books on Tx plants.......2000-03-29
I was very impressed with this book. I read through the whole thing several times. She reviews plants that will grow well in all of the climates in the state, and gives you enough information to be able to judge if you should give the plant you want to grow a try, even if your region isn't the best for it. Very detailed, yet easy to read, and very well written.
The best book I have had the pleasure to use. A must!!!!.......1999-05-10
This is the best gardening book on perennial flowers in Texas I have used. It covers every region of the state not just a section. The photos are excellent for planing your own garden or for identifing flowers from a region not familar to you. Ms Ryan has done us amatuers a great service. Thank You Julie!

Images of angels have marched for centuries in the footsteps of the winged Renaissance and cherubic Victorian idealizations of angels, but Bloncourt and Engelmann open new territory with fresh interpretations of these divine messengers by photographers like Carolyn Jones and Jerry Uelsmann. The ephemeral photography alone would make Visions of Angels a worthy tome, but the authors juxtapose each black-and-white image with the names of several different angels and their role in the cosmic order, highlighting significant details of the photograph, teasing you to interpret each work in 10 different ways. This is one book you won't leaf through casually once and tuck away on your top bookshelf. Visions of Angels will have you captivated for hours, as you ponder these earthly manifestations of heavenly creatures. --Brian Patterson

Beautiful, all the way through.......2001-08-31
As soon as I found this book in a used book store, I knew I needed to buy it. I love all the images and reading through all the angel names. Whenever I feel like the world is rapidly becoming overwhelming, I sit down with "Visions of Angels" and it helps to restore my balance. I highly recommend it - a coffee table book, it is not!
Breathtaking wide array of angelic subjects and photo style.......1999-05-10
My favorite is that of "JASON, 1995" by Kelly Grider which depicts a male angel portrayed in a classic 19th century european romantic style. My second favorite is "Descending Angel" which also appears on the cover.
This is one beautiful and thought provoking book........1998-12-08
I am not a big fan of "coffee table" books. They gather more dust than the table, but this book demands attention. I find myself picking it up and contemplating the images. They are all deserving of multiple viewings - they are ART. The best image from Thursday may become hated on Wednesday because of the emotions generated by me, combined with the photo. I encourage all to pick up the book and I challenge you to the challenge of contemplation. Enjoy the ride.

Salsa Lover.......2007-10-09
This book still holds up. While it takes Gloria's life up through 1997, it is a good read. Also a Spanish edition is in the same volume. It is not all flattering to Gloria and is filled with facts and good information. Could use an update.
IS IT AUTHORIZED???????????????.......2001-12-17
This was a really good book, considering it had hardly anything to do with who Gloria is as a person, but of other information that is ALL new to me. Is this book authorized, because I'm just really interested to know if that information is accurate. Good Book.
A balanced and insightful view of this amazing rock star........2001-10-25
I read half of this book, since this book is half the English version, and the other half is the Spanish version. Being a fan of hers, I found it very interesting. It isn't all flattering to Gloria, for it tells of some of her legal disputes, financial disputes, and arguements with band associates and relatives. It gives some insight as to how she got to be such a famous rock star, and some of the reasons people admire her so much.
Good Book.......1998-09-08
This book was great I had fun reading it

Book Description
Biography of Grammy Award-winning recording artist, Gloria Estefan.
Customer Reviews:
it was fantasmagoricle.......2005-03-05
If you like music you will love this biography about Gloria Estefan. This is an amazing story about a girl who moves from Cuba to Miami, Florida. She grows up to be a singer in Emilio Estefan's band. Then a little while later she graduates college and as you may have guessed, gets married to Emilio. They had two kids. There is a huge tragedy. She helped people who lost their homes in Hurricane Andrew. She also helped prevent kids from doing drugs.
This is a great story for kids, especially if they want to be singers. I liked when the author talked to you directly and made you feel happy about her recovering from the tragedy.

Gloria Estefan.......2005-03-05
This book is very exciting. It tells everything about Gloria, from when she was a baby, all the way to when she had a baby.
When Gloria was a baby, she had to move from Cuba, to Miami, Florida. When she was growing up, her dad got very ill. She had to go to school, learn English, and take on extra chores at home because her had to take care of her dad. During her life, she joined two bands. One was temporary and one was a career.
While she was doing that, she got married to Emilio Estefan. She had two kids. Before the 2nd one there were 2 tragedies, but they got through them, and fixed them. Before the tragedies she got many singles out with her band, she had a good interesting life before the tragedies, but she had a good life after it too.
In my opinion the author did an extraordinary job on this book. I also like that her word choice is awesome, because it is not boring.

It's Awesome.......2005-03-05
This biography is great for kids, especially who want to be famous some day. It's also an awesome book for anyone who likes to read exciting books about the lives of other people.
It's about a Cuban girl named Gloria Estafan and her family at first. They are forced to leave Cuba. When she gets to Florida, she likes it better than Cuba.
While in Florida her father gets a horrible disease. When she is in High school she gets great grades. At home she gets away from it all by playing music. She joins a band and the band manager is Emilio.
Later she falls in love with Emilio, they get married, and have a child. Her band becomes famous after a while. Then a tragedy happens that keeps her of her feet for a while. But she still has her family.
I think this book is fantastic because of the amazing pictures and fabulas word choice.

Wee-Mans book review.......2005-03-05
This story is great, and exciting the first time I read it. The story is worth reading. This story tells about Gloria's life. In the middle of the story Gloria's life turns in to a tragedy. This story is good. I think you should read it because it tells what Gloria's life is like.
Freds review OnGloria Estefan.......2005-03-05
The author of Gloria Estefan did an awesome job explaining the life of Gloria. She started the book at Gloria being born then she had to move to Miami Florida. There she met Emilio and joined his popular band.
Emilio and Gloria got married after they made some records and then made a lot more records together. Gloria her son and Emilio got to meet the president. On the way to one of Gloria's concerts a tragedy struck. Gloria still song after the tragedy and had another child. Emilio and Gloria had one big perfect happy family.
I thought this book was very help full because before I read this book I didn't know anything about Gloria and now I know a lot. If you want to be a star or even just want a good book to read I would suggests this book.

Gloria Estefan.......2005-02-05
I give this book a 4-star rating. This story takes place in Gloria Estefan's native land of Cuba and then in Miami, Florida, where she became famous. Gloria had a rough childhood because she had to take care of her sick father and watch over her younger sister while her mother worked very hard to keep her family afloat. Gloria enjoyed music and playing her guitar. In fact, she owes a lot to her mother for making her learn to play the guitar. Gloria would play and sing in order to forget all her problems. This was her way of relaxing. Gloria's career began when she met Emilio Estefan at her high school. Emilio came to the school to talk about music. Everybody was singing and playing their instruments. Emilio noticed Gloria playing her guitar and the fact that she could sing both in English and Spanish. He asked her to join his band, and she accepted. Gloria's first performance was at a local wedding. Emilio's band was called the "Latin Boys", but when Gloria joined, the name was changed to "Miami Sound Machine" (MSM). From this point forward, she became the "Gloria Estefan" we know today.

Customer Reviews:
For any fan of Gloria Estefan's.......2000-04-07
I read this book for a class assignment on biographical non-fiction. I have been a fan of Gloria Estefan's for many years, so I thought this would be a great history of her life. This book is great for children to read because it is a history of such of the Cuban government and what the people who lived there had to endure. I liked that the book gave not only information on how things in Cuba affected Gloria and her family, but it also tells of a historical account of Castro and Cuba becoming a communist country. I also enjoyed the explanation of the record industry and how the artist get their music recorded and listened to on the radio.
The life of Gloria Estefan is inspiring to any young girl who may feel inadequate or talentless. Gloria is very family oriented and this book reflects her values and commitment to her heritage.
The end of the book gives chronological accounts in her life, a record of her releases and chapter notes that are very resourceful.
