Good, but no substitute for a live guide.......2005-07-02

As a fellow tour guide, I know Big Onion does good work, and this is no exception. As a rival tour guide (New York Like a Native), I'll also suggest that this book, like any guidebook, is no substitute for a live guided tour. There are a couple of errors (but not at an unacceptable level). More importantly, any tour enshrined in a book is already out of date--for example, a tour of Fort Greene & Clinton Hill should address the looming Nets arena complex. And any book has space limits; this omits numerous streets, buildings, institutions, and bars/restaurants/stores I'd want to mention.

A wonderful little guide probing many historic neighborhoods.......2005-06-06

Take a narrowed focus on Brooklyn, New York alone, put it in a tall but narrow pocket-sized take-along tote, add historic photos from the Brooklyn Historical Society along with maps and directions, and you have created a walking tour guide unique in its approach and scope, with The Historic Walking Tours: Big Onion Guide To Brooklyn. Several pages of fuzzy printing mid-book don't but temporarily mar the success of a wonderful little guide probing many historic neighborhoods and buildings.

Martin Luther King Jr.'s "Letter from Birmingham Jail" is arguably the most important written document of the civil rights protest era and a widely read modern literary classic. Personally addressed to eight white Birmingham clergymen who sought to avoid violence by publicly discouraging King's civil rights demonstrations in Birmingham, the nationally published "Letter" captured the essence of the struggle for racial equality and provided a blistering critique of the gradualist approach to racial justice. It soon became part of American folklore, and the image of King penning his epistle from a prison cell remains among the most moving of the era. Yet as S. One MLK Jr. Holiday, I See More Need for Peacemakers!.......2005-01-18

All who lived during those momentous years of Southern turmoil of 1960's were greatly impacted by the laws of desegregation of the white churches and schools. As one renews his/her commitment to religious and social justice, it brings into focus our recent tragedies of Ruwanda, Iraq, Thailand, and Indonesia! Upon my own return to Professor Bass's BLESSED ARE THE PEACEMAKERS, I easily conjure up my perennial pictures of his accounts of eight white Ministers, their churches and families being turned inside/out or upside/down by Southern racial injustice.

In Bass's easy reading, documented, and dramatically illustrated account of eight white ministers' appeal for law, order, common sense, before and after the reception of MLK Jr's, "Letter From Birmingham Jail," I was transported back to 1963; Into mid-1965 when Earl Stallings became both my Pastor and my Good Friend! In spite of persistent segregationist pressure, not once did Earl consider turning black vsitors away from First Baptist Church of Birmingham. "If the people came to worship," Stallings wrote days after the incident "we had no Christian justification for closing our doors...if they came to provoke an incident, we were determined to have no part in this action."

Since 1954 the FBC maintained an open-door policy for any black visitors. From an early distinguished Pastor J T Ford, followed by Guy Sloan and Grady Cothen and Earl Stallings they reaffirmed that policy! Yet on the morning after they welcomed the first black visitors, newspapers all over the country printed large photographs of a cheerful Earl Stallings shaking hands with the black visitors. They included both the NEW YORK TIMES and the Atlanta Journal-Constitution!

From my perspective or from Prof. Jonathan Bass's perpspective, it appears that he gave a deeper account of the introspective thoughts or words of Earl Stallings, than from the other white ministers! Since MLK's Letter referred to outstanding persons' writing: Ralph McGill, Harry Golden, James McBride Dobbs, Ann Braden, Lillian Smith, and Sarah Patten Boyle, it seems that the author added deserving comments beside the eight pictures of those Ministers. Next to Earl Stallings picture he quoted his recent sermon: "We hear the call of truth, of righteousness, of justice, but we are not men enough to heed its challenge!"

From 1965 thru 1975 in his next pastorate, I often needed Earl's commitment to equality and social justice, as when I chose music of Fred Waring's "Easter Story of Black Spirituals" over Church dissent: "It's getting much too close for those Black threats of violence in our streets of Marietta on Good Friday, April 8th of 1968!" That same evening for the Good Friday Worship we had a full house with a few black families present! Retired Chaplain Fred W Hood

A Special Delivery Letter.......2001-06-26

It was just a letter written by a man in jail, on behalf of his race, attempting to address the social injustice of the time-right? Wrong! Martin Luther King's Letter From the Birmingham Jail is much more compelling, and the circumstances surrounding its final composition more complex than the average person knows. Ostensibly written to the eight white clergymen of the embittered and embattled steel city, it was intended for a much wider audience-namely the media and the American public. Blessed Are the Peacemakers provides the reader with individual profiles of the eight and their struggles of conscience as they saw an old social order collapse. What has been taken as the almost spur-of-the-moment reflections of Martin Luther King, in jail for civil disobedience, turns out to be a document much longer in the making and more calculated in its delivery. This disclosure in no way detracts from its rightful place in American folklore or its power in fueling Civil Rights Movement. Rather, it helps us understand the care with which the deep conviction of racial rights was presented. The book is not an apology for the eight clergy, some of whom were more progressive than others, but it does provide much needed insight for the serious student of history into the complex struggles, powerful emotions, and vitrolic attacks perpetrated on even the most moderate voices of the white clergy. What it does not do, of course, is speak of the many white clergy of lesser rank who paid a much higher price for their fight for justice for their black brothers and sisters. Still, to read about these eight leaders, (Roman Catholic, Episcopalian, Methodist, Baptist, Presbyterian, and Jewish) and their struggles is instructive. As an Alabama-born, white clergy expatriate from that period, marginally involved in the Civil Rights Movement, I hung on every word. These are reflections that should help black and white readers alike better understand this turbulent period. Statements from the eight white clergy as well as King's Letter are included in the appendix.

Excellent: Ferrets 101.......1999-11-05

Although I liked the companion book (Training Your Pet Ferret) more, this is an excellent concise guide for someone who knows nothing about ferrets. This is not a book for anyone who has even a working knowledge about ferret behavior. But then again I haven't found a good guide yet that goes in depth into ferret matters for those of us who know the basics about them, but would like to know more.

While some of the information is unique to this book (like the part about ferret sounds and body language) there are some alarming errors (a ferret should NEVER be housed in an aquarium!). Use it as an additional reference, but not your primary one. You should have several different sources to refer to anyway.

10 Years Hardly Made Any Difference.......1999-04-23

There are many more up-to-date reference books on the Domestic Pet Ferret. It's an add to my Ferret book collection only. I recommend researching all books available before deciding to be owned by Ferrets.

Please don't buy this book, you may hurt your Ferret!.......1999-01-11

As a keeper of Ferrets here in England I was appalled when I was given this book as a present for Christmas 98'. There are a number of really quite harmful and cruel elements to this book This could not be further from the truth. The Ferret is a highly social animal and they should really be kept in a minimum of threes, two females and a male.

De-scenting. This is a highly controversial prac n integral part of the animals communication system and to remove them just for the delicate nostrils of the owner is really very unfair on the animal.

To say that Ferrets release odour when in fear of their life is quite innaccurate. Ferrets release an odour when they are excited, prior to eating, before hunting or going for a walk.

Within the book the subject of housing the Ferret is not covered at all satisfatorily, to suggest that a Ferret needs a cage of only 10 inches in height is cruel. Ferrets are climbers by ntaure and mine reguarly climb the seven feet to the top of their 6 foot by 6 foot court. There is scant reference to the correct size and positioning of an outdoor court and cub.

I could go on, but frankly the 1000 word limit is rapidly running out. But for those die hards amongst you who rate this book, just refer to the "My tip" on page 23, advising the reader "never to strike the Ferret's body" This lady must really have been struggling for something to write if she thinks that the average Ferret loving reader would hit such a small animal!

The picture of the "White-footed butterscotch" on page 41 is further testament to this authors own ineptitude, either if this Ferret is her own or the picture is from a library, it should never have been used in a reference book. The poor animal's nails are clearly too long and should have been t rimmed, if they grow much further they'll grow back under themselves! Poor Ferret.

One thing this "guide" is not is complete!

Este libro contiene una copia facsímile del diario personal de Frida Kahlo (1907-1954) escrito por su propia mano en español, seguido por copias de cada pagina con comentarios explicativos y traducciones en inglés. El diario, el cual estuvo oculto al publico en México durante varias décadas, cubre los últimos 10 años de la vida de la artista, cuando se hallaba en medio de muchos problemas físicos y emocionales. Entre otros tópicos, escribe sobre su niñez, sus opiniones políticas y su relación con su marido, el pintor Diego Rivera. TIMELY CONSIDERING THE OVERDUE COMPREHENSIVE COLLECTION NOW ON DISPLAY IN THE CAPITAL OF MEXICO.......2007-06-26

Interesting that Calderon now opens a space for a comprehensive display of Kahlo's works in the capitol city, considering the great differences in the politics they espouse so ardently. It is like Rockefeller hiring Diego Rivera for a mural in Manhattan, and scandalized sees Marx and Lenin within!

But such wonders are beyond me, and humbly and happily and gratefully let us receive this excellent facsimile with transcription and commentary of this diary maintained by Frida Kahlo in the final decade of her proud though tormented life. Carlos Fuentes, the famous Mexican novelist contributes one commentary, paired with an introduction by Kahlo scholar Sarah Lowe. Then follows a reporduction of each page of the diary, each page of which we see clearly from Kahlo's own hand, unlike the dubious and revisionist Reagan Diaries recently released. Following the diary pages, each page is then transcribed, commented and put into context very thoroughly. COmprehensive chronologies, bibliogrpahies and indices complete this excellent edition useful to any scholar or Frida fanatic.

Let me note that I received today the second edition, published in September of 2001, and that I have the Spanish edition, which I find more direct and useful than straining to peer through the dim gauze of someone else's transalation of Kahlo's own words. Highly recommended. Deeply and truthfully moving, as everything which falls from the hand of Frida.

It's a great book and it has so much detail about a master........2007-01-10

Frida was more than an artist, she was a woman who knew what she wanted and how to get it. Her only downfall was that she had deep doubts inside her most inner self and shared it with very few.

I guess we all do, but she always wanted people to think she was though when in fact she was very fragile.

A must to understand Puerto Rico's modern history........2006-10-23

This is the story of Luis Muñoz Marín Puerto Rico's first elected governor and his internal struggle to free his countrymen from dehumanizing poverty vis a vis continuing his quest for independence for Puerto Rico, the creation of a Constitution for Puerto Rico and his failed attempt to create a new political status for the Island, a cross between statehood and full sovereignty within the territory.
The book presents the life of Muñoz as a young man, constantlly trekking between Puerto Rico and the US while pursuing journalism, in both languages and countries, and a career in Politics in Puerto Rico. It also presents the constant intrigue in the corridors of power in Washington during the New Deal years to the Kennedy years in the 60's.

The author, Alex W. Maldonado met and knew Muñoz during his governorship and after his retirement from politics. The story it tells is delivered with authority, unbiased and fully supported by historical documents.

A good historical account of an era.......2007-10-09

This book is a fascinating account of an important era in Puerto Rican history. The book is very well written and easy to read. I emerged with a very human picture of Munoz, not this larger than life figure that is often portrayed in Puerto Rican history books and newspaper articles. Names that I see everyday on the streets of Puerto Rico acquired new meaning as I learned what role they played in our hsociety.

I was disappointed with the author's treatment of certain aspects of Munoz's life, which were very controversial. For example, he does not delve into the Gag Law (Ley de la Mordaza), which resulted in the incarceration and torture of many prominent pro-independence leaders on the island and the general repression of the pro-independence movement during his tenure. I also feel that author did not uncover in sufficient depth the power struggle of the 1968 elections, which marked the beginning of the downfall of the Popular Democratic Party as the leading party on the island.

In general, I highly recommend this book to any person interested in learning more about the 20th century history of Puerto Rico.
