      Book Description

This book is about a man who wanted to drive around the world, to remote corners, to those places where few men have ventured before. He wanted to do it in a four-wheel drive, taking his own camper-trailer with him, to live at the edge of deserts and at the rim of tropical jungles, to drive the highest roads, and the lowest, to be free to make his own choices. He found a nut who wanted to do it with him, a picture editor of a leading man's magazine in New York, and the Trans World Expedition was born. This is their incredible journey. The did it, and how they did it is their tale told in his exciting book.

I bought this book for my husband, who owns two FJ40s and an FJ60. He has really enjoyed it-- the story is interesting from a vehicular standpoint but is also apparently fascinating in its own right.

5 out of 5 stars STILL, A SPLENDID READ AFTER ALL THESE YEARS!.......2006-12-04

I first read this one shortly after it was published. I was quite impressed with it at the time. Recently, going through my back room books shelf, I "rediscovered" my old copy. I check it out here on Amazon and found it was back in print. That is a good thing for all of us! Anyway, I just gave it a reread and found it to be just as good as the first read back in the 1960s. Actually this is quite a remarkable travel book for several reasons. First, and most important, the author's actually interact with not only their physical environment as they travel, but also with the people they meet. This is not one of those "a hippy takes a walk" books, it is the real thing. These guys are real people and the individuals they meet on their journey are real also. Secondly, It is absolutely fascinating, for me at least, to see just how little our world has actually changes over the past forty or so years. Other than a bit of technology here and there, it is just about the same. People are still shooting people in the same parts of the world. People are still hating people and overall ideas about "the other guy" have not changed much at all. The authors have great insight to this and express it well. Thirdly, the authors have an ability to make you feel apart of their total experience. You actually feel you are with them much of the way. They writing style is quite good, readable and enjoyable. The observations are quite acute and as timely today as they were at the time the book was written. Having traveled myself in quite a few of the areas this journey took place, I can attest to the fact that their description of the areas they traveled through are quite accurate as well as their descriptions of the people and the food. Overall, this is one of the better travel type books I have read and do recommend it highly. If you like this sort of read, this is a good bet.

You would think Steve (Harold) and Al were just obsessed
with accomplishing an almost impossible feat, but despite
their single-mindedness about their dream and goal, they
took the time to absorb the lessons learned from many
diverse cultures and bureaucratic systems and came away
      much richer for that effort.

For short periods in my life I have experienced similar
adventures, but I stand in awe of their ability to keep on
moving, while befriending the honest and skillfully dealing
with those not so honest. They knew they were horiji
(afghanistan), faranj (ethiopia), gaijin (japan) and
farang (thailand), but in the end, people are people and
they made all of them fascinating.

I really enjoyed this book. I bought the book because I'm interested in old FJ40's, but this book was a great adventure book - a tale that no words could possibly describe. However, it was a fun read, as you felt like you may have been in the backseat while the other drove you around the world.

I liked this book because it has a lot of details about housetraining that other books skim over. The author offers several housetraining schedules to get you started with training. I agree that the material could be covered in far fewer pages but if you wanted brevity on the subject you probably wouldn't be looking to buy a whole book about it anyway.

I found this book to be mostly fluff about cute little puppies going potty than any really helpfull information. Most of the information could have been written in 10 pages but some how ended up to be 120 pages. I found "The Only Dog Training Book You'll Ever Need" by Bielakiewicz much more helpfull and much less expensive.

4 out of 5 stars The "Temperate Climate" Fruit Expert........2004-01-20

This beautifully illustrated and photographed book is a very informative and easy to use reference for everyone who wants expert advice on how to plant and keep a fruit garden. This wonderfully organized book is divided into six sections:
                * The Fruit in the Garden: gives advice on how to choose the right type of fruit for your garden.
                * The Tree Fruit: a guide to buying, planting and keeping specific fruits that grow on trees, including apples, pears, plums, cherries, peaches and nectarines, apricots, figs, mulberries and quinces.
                * The Soft Fruit: a guide to buying, selecting site and soil, planting and keeping, feeding and mulching, and protecting from birds and viruses fruits that don't grow on trees, including berries, currants, grapes, melons and kiwis.
                * Shop-Bought Fruit: an illustrated reference on how to recognize fruits available in the market, including tips on how to buy, preserve, ripen and eat them.
                * A Glossary.
                * An Index.
As an added bonus, both the Tree Fruit and the Soft Fruit sections contain a visual reference to help you identify several different varieties of the same fruit, and a very thorough guide on solving common fruit troubles.
The information given in this book for the fruits listed is very complete; however, since it was written for a British public, it only lists temperate climate fruits. Other fruits like banana, orange, papaya, avocado, pineapple, mango, grapefruit, lemon, etc. are not included in the book, except for their brief entries in the Shop-Bought Fruit section.
I recommend buying this book if you want to start your own temperate climate fruit garden, and complement it with other books when you are ready to add to it some tropical fruits.

How useful the "Fruit Expert" is depends on where you live. If you're English, this is probably a fine book for you; if you live in the States ... keep looking. I wish I had known this before I bought it; I wish Amazon would give the publisher's city for all their garden books.

This book should be of interest to people who are interested in becoming specialist growers, and especially breeders, particularly if they are interested in one of the few plant types covered: Hostas, Daylilies, Roses, Antique Fruit Trees, Herbal Arts, Dwarf Conifers, Peonies, Wildflowers (of the Southeastern woods), Lilies, Peppers. One does learn what it takes to be such a specialist, and the pros and cons of various plants, but there are better sources for info on each type of plant.

There is beginning info on propagation of most of these plant types, and on setting up the landscape and work areas for growing and propagating them. It is not especially helpful for general horticulturists looking for tips on various types of plants. Perhaps "The Well-Tended Perennial Garden" is the best resource for most such gardeners, and/or whichever book best covers a given genus or other category (there are books exclusively on most of these plant types).

Although this author seems to have personal tomato growing experience, this book is primarily based on detailed questionnaires that the author had experienced tomato growers from around the nation fill out. This has the most extensive tomato variety listing that I have seen. Usually with insightful comments & often with ratings, from these tomato gardeners around the nation. Many times the ratings vary around the nation. The drawings are good. Many good suggestions.

                              Book Description

"Have nothing in your house which you do not know to be useful or believe to be beautiful."-William Morris

William Morris's wallpaper, carpets, and other textile designs are as popular today as they were when he created them in the late 1880s. One of the most influential figures in the history of the decorative arts, Morris (1834- 1896) challenged the mass-production methods of the industrial revolution and launched the revival of handcrafted work that became known as the Arts and Crafts movement. His firm, Morris & Co, created wood furniture, hand-woven tapestries, embroideries, printed textiles, woven fabrics, stained glass, tiles, and block-printed wallpapers, many of which are still being produced-by the same methods-more than a century later.

This new book shows how to incorporate Morris's designs and theories into contemporary interiors. Carefully chosen photographs show a wide variety of rooms using Morris designs, and include details of individual textile and wallpaper patterns. Inspired by nature and featuring soft, pure colors, Morris's designs are classics, still relevant and stylish in today's interiors.

                              5 out of 5 stars Beautiful photographs...............2005-06-03

I did not purchase this book, but I did check it out from my library. I have to say that this is a great book displaying William Morris' textile and wallpaper designs in contemporary settings.

I have seen books that use William Morris' designs and the rooms are not fresh, but look dated. You won't find that in this book. The photos are rich in detail and gives readers great decorating ideas.

If you are a collector of William Morris' wallpapers or fabrics, or if you love beautiful interiors that blend contemporary with traditional, then I think you will enjoy this book.

The authors take their experience in British tile and present an indepth analysis of the work of William Morris. Although well-known for his other products, the authors bring the overshadowed tile work to light in text and pictures.

Although collectors will not be able to add most of the picturend pieces to their collection, the book can be. Unlike many books geared toward collectors, this book showcases many installation, many of which are in abbeys, and English manor homes. It is definitely not a "my collection book."

The indepth analysis of the artists who worked for Wm Morris should hold some information to even knowledgeable collectors

William Morris 1834-1896 was one of the major figures of the Victorian age and his influence as a designer, artist, printer and writer endures until today. Aymer Vallance who wrote this magisterial biography was a personal friend of the artist and completed the book in 1897, the year after Morris' death. Although Vallance was at pains to say that he was not writing a biography or record of Morris' private or family affairs and tndeed specifically excludes these areas from the book, his account of Morris' artistic works and achievements is so comprehensive that there is very little omitted. Morris' main works were created within the umbrella of Morris & Co, which he founded with the help of Ford Madox Brown, Sir E Burne-Jones and Dante Gabriel Rossetti. He aimed to turn the taste and design standard of the Victorian age back to simple, natural patterns and laws. As Vallance wrote "William Morris undertook the Herculean and seemingly hopeless task of decorative reform and wrought and brought deliverance from the thraldom of the ugly, which oppressed all the so-called arts of this country". Morris & Co originally specialised in stained glass where his main achievements were to interpret Burne-Jones' paintings, those windows at Jesus College, Cambridge and Christ Church, Oxford being particularly fine. From there he developed tiles, tapestries, carpets, materials and particularly wall-paper ..."of the many industries connected with the name of Morris, none has more universal celebrity than that of wall-paper hangings; and rightly so". The other major work with which William Morris' name will remain forever associated is the work of the Kelmscott Press. The last and finest publication of the Kelmscott Press was Morris' design for the complete works of Chaucer which has become one of the most famous book of all time. It was his final achievement.

This book is a diary of a girl who hangs out with the wrong kind of guys at first. Guys involved with gangs and ditching. But then she decides to try to change her life for the better. Its in the 70's and the girl who writes this diary had been ditching school alot with friends, but then she quits to try harder to do better in school. A month later someone who is jealous of her snitches on her about her ditching. She gets in alot of trouble but still wants to make things better. She tries out for cheerleading and ends up being the only one who doesn't get picked for a squad. Her two older sisters tell her shes ugly and make fun of her and in her determination to prove them wrong she decides to take up tennis. She gets pretty good at it and joins the Tennis team. Then she meets a guy and goes crazy over him. He likes her but wants his freedom also. They go surfing together all summer and she finally thinks shes on the right track but eventually she find out things about him that cause more problems for them. I wont say what happens next because things get really dramatic and her feelings fly up and down on this rollercoaster ride of a book. There are some really funny things that happen in this book and then there are some sad events that I found myself relating to. All teens experience heartbreak and depression and its interesting to read a true story about how someone else dealt with this experience.
