Australia is one of the few countries in the world generally associated with a single group of plants, namely - the eucalypts.

The genus Eucalyptus includes over 800 species and over 326 are described in this volume. In particular it is significant as it features the colorful eucalypts of Western Australia, which have been widely used for landscaping. The area covered includes the Great Victoria Desert, and extends across the Nullabor Plain, to most of South Australia and into areas of New South Wales which lie to the north and west of the River Darling.

Since the first edition of Volume 2 was published in 1990, many new species have been formally named. The numerous subsequent discoveries are included in the Appendix of the Volume. In addition, the layout of the book has been updated and reorganized to be consistent with the latest formal classification of the genus. Important features are emphasized in bolder type and color illustrations show the tree or mallee and its bark, buds and fruit. Botanical terms are explained and illustrated.

Have second edition updated 1999
Good key, discussion of bark catagories, leaf phases, & other distinguishing features.
For each tree has:
Good photo of overall tree shape/form
Good photo of bark characteristics
Excellent photo of bud
some with bud and flower (maybe one out of 6-7 trees)
Excellent photo of fruit
Very few photos of leaves.
Would have liked to see juvenile and mature leaves.
Discussion of distribution gives clues to type of soil tree is adapted to.
Would have liked to seen some comment if trees adapt to cultivation or are invasive etc.
Overall, best Eucalyptus book I've seen to date.

The genus Eucalyptus includes over 700 species, with almost a third of these occurring in south-eastern Australia in the crescent from the top of Spencer Gulf around to the northern New South Wales border including Tasmania. Nearly three hundred of the known species and subspecies in the area are included in this volume and each is described and illustrated.

In each description the more important features are emphasized by the use of bolder type, and color photographs show the tree or mallee and its bark, buds and fruit. The botanical terms used throughout are explained and illustrated in the introduction and defined in the glossary.

Since the first edition which was published in 1983, many new species have been discovered, and many names changed. In addition, the layout of the book has now been completely updated and reorganized consistent with volumes 2 and 3.

At the head of each digest a summary shows how the species fits into the overall classification of eucalypts. Keys provide a systematic route to identification: there is a separate key for each of the four States covered by the books, plus the Australian Capital Territory. A wide range of characters is used to distinguish between the species.

Field Guide to Eucalyptus Vol 1 is a most valuable and authoritative source of reference for all who are interested in trees - botanists, foresters, naturalists and many others.

Not all you would expect.......2005-08-30

This is the standard Australian text on the identification of eucalypts in the field. The forward forewarns the reader that it is intended for "expert" users.
The trees it described are set out in "Natural order" .

For they lay user this book is virtually impenetrable and I suspect they will find it of little use in the field. The trees appear in apparent random order and the key in the introduction , based on location ,is of little use.

You will need to be completely familiar with the academic classification of trees to a detailed level for this book to be useful.
It is inclined to have the appearance of a dictionary that is not in alphabetic order.

As a "mommy" of 2 of the dogs in the book, I planned on going straight to the picture of our dogs...but as soon as I opened to the first page, that thought totally left my mind. I eventually got there, but not before enjoying all of the many other dogs whose pictures made me laugh and say "AAAWWW"! Since I received the book, I have looked at it at least 20 times and chuckled at every picture! Kim does an AMAZING job of capturing the personality of each and every dog.

Winter is the time when most gardeners cannot do much actual work in their garden, so that's the time when we tend to gather a bunch of gardening catalogs to marvel over and plan our new gardening exploits. Reading about new plants and making lists is a fun way to spend those waiting months, but I've discovered an even more fun thing to do if you are an avid gardener with a vision. Get yourself a copy of Janet Lembke's "From Grass to Gardens: How to Reap Bounty from a Small Yard," and I can guarantee you will be enchanted.

Ms. Lembke's book on gardening in a small space is part memoir, part handbook, part cookbook and all of it is great reading. Her way with words is magical - you can nearly see, smell and taste what she is writing about. The writing is fluid and never sounds conceited or artificial. The practical advice within the pages is great - I found myself making notes often as I was reading. There is also an excellent list of resources for gardeners included at the end of the book - everything from seeds and plants to tools and books. The Bibliography section is over six-pages long and I added a good few of the titles from it to my reading list.

Then there are Ms. Lembke's precepts, interspersed throughout the book and clearly distinguishable by the bold print and the pretty leaf decoration. It would be worth getting the book just for those. Let me quote a few of my favorite ones here:

"Know thine enemy. Become acquainted with the plants that you don't like - dandelions, thistles, plantains, pokeweed, and all the rest that invade your garden like a Mongol horde. All have histories, and many have served human uses. Then, if you still don't like them, root them out."

"Place a birdhouse near the vegetable patch. There shall be music as you pick your beans and harvest the tomatoes."

"Let things grow and discover what they are."

Ms. Lembke's no-nonsense, but sensitive approach to gardening really made me re-think some of my approaches and I am certain my new garden will be a batter one thanks to it. As for the book, I started reading it again already. Spring is nearly here, so I have to make sure that I get everything right.

I would recommend "From Grass to Gardens" to gardeners, nature lovers and just anybody who loves great writing and sensible approach to life. It is one of those books that one should savor, read it slowly and re-read it often.
