This book of 85 drawings by Jim Dine illustrates the range and mastery of the artist's draftsmanship over more than four decades. The variety and breadth of the selection shows the intense way Dine observes the world around him and the excitement with which he records it on paper. Dine has said that his ability to draw is both a privilege and the result of hard physical training, compelling him to move inexorably forward to capture the next idea or the next psychological insight in drawings that are extraordinarily human. The selection includes early tool pencil drawings and collages, as well as powerful portrait and figure studies in a variety of media. Also included are large painterly pastels executed with a bravura that places them somewhere between painting and drawing. Dine sees his paintings and drawings as essentially conceived and developed in the same way--requiring the same amount of time, emotion, and physicality of medium. Inspirational drawings.......2001-07-14

As an art student, I am fascinated by the way artists put media to paper, in the most basic way, and draw. In this book, 'Jim Dine: Drawings from the Glyptotech' we are shown the true art of drawing. By taking a pretty straightforward model, e.g. a statue, Dine renders something quite unique. How can one artist lay open the heart and soul of something so static as a statue? But, surprisingly, he does this with economy of line and media. The drawings show strength and depth and you are left with a knowledge of real people and their lives, in a two-dimensional sense. The text is concise and you immediately understand the points Dine is making in relation to his drawings. The reproductions of his drawings are exceptional. This book should be in every art students' (and artists, for that matter) bookcase as an essential reference point from where to start drawing. I have learnt so much from Jim Dine in this book that I just want to spend years exploring the art of putting down good lines on paper.

Blooming with botanical drawings and paintings this coffee table volume by artist Jim Dine is a must for gardeners and flora aficionados.

Here we find beauty in the unexpected intricate charcoal shading in Dine's interpretation of a mandrake root, in an amazing pencil and watercolour study of a hyacinth, and in the bawdy, robust color found in anthuriums.

This is a timeless volume that brings pleasure each time it is opened.

Jim Dine is a consummate draftsman whose images of tools, large-scale nudes, self-portraits, and studies from nature and after antiquity are among the most accomplished and beautiful drawings of our time. This exhibition, the first major survey of Dine's drawings in 15 years, will feature over 100 of the finest examples from the 1970s to the present. During the 1960s, Dine's name was inextricably linked with Pop art. But he made a dramatic shift during the 1970s, devoting himself to drawing from life. Drawings of Jim Dine examines the artist's accomplishment by focusing not only on works on paper but also on drawings in a purer sense: ones that largely incorporate line and rely heavily on materials such as pencil, chalk, and charcoal. Although many examples in the exhibition deviate from this standard, the emphasis is on works that demonstrate the artist's skills as a draftsman and underscore his traditional underpinnings, even as he breaks new ground. Today, drawing remains at the core of Dine's range of expression. Through a restricted assortment of obsessive images, which continue to be reinvented in various guises--birds, Pinocchio, and others--Dine presents compelling stand-ins for himself and mysterious metaphors for his art. Since the last major survey of Dine's drawings, the medium has served as an indispensable component of his creative endeavor, in many ways representing the essence of his artistic achievement.

Buy it for the breathtaking photography!.......2004-07-24

This is the ultimate book of cat photography. The textual material is NOT so ultimate. If you want a stunning experience, open Barron's Encyclopedia of Cat Breeds to any page in the breed description section, and look at the mediocre photographs. Then open the Ultimate Cat Book to the page about the same breed and see the breathtaking photos of the same breed! The verbal descriptions in the Ultimate Cat Book, on the other hand, leave a lot to be desired. There are no charts for ease of comparison of different breeds. The histories and descriptions are oversimpilified and contradicted by other books. It seems that the author finds it impossible to make any negative remark about any breed, which makes it impossible to weigh the pros and cons of different breeds. The whole subject of Traditional versus Extreme versions of different breeds is completely ignored - or, maybe, the authors are completely ignorant of the subject!

The TRULY ultimate cat book would consist of the photos from the Ultimate Cat Book and the text and charts from Barron's Encyclopedia. I would still recommend that every cat fancier buy the Ultimate Cat Book, but they should understand that what they are buying is the Ultimate Cat PICTURE Book.

The Ultimate Cat Book is the Ultimate Dissapointment.......2001-10-05

The write-up and history sections of each breed in this book are very shallow, not detailed, and in some cases inaccurate. For example, the Tiffany cat was NOT produced from crossing Burmese cats with Persians as stated on page 71. It did not show any accurate pictures of the Chantilly/Tiffany breed.

Most of the information is of the level of detail about what you would expect from a middle-school or high-school book report. I was very disappointed. "The new Encylopedia of the Cat", by Dr. Fogle, which we ordered at the same time, is much better and has a lot more accurate and informative details. If you want one book, get Dr. Fogle's. "The Ultimate Cat Book" is not ultimate at all. It was a disappointment.

The photography in this book is stunning; the added insight into what the photographers were trying to achieve (mood, market etc) is definitely an added bonus.

This is definitely NOT a "how to" book. Specific lighting details (lights, position etc) can be sketchy to almost non-exist. This is not a photography cookbook but more of a window in the vision of the photographers.

Highly recommended!

This is a great collection of very inovative and professionally done photography that my husband and I both enjoyed. We would recommend to anyone who enjoys original, color and black and white photography and of course the naked female and male body.

Having bought 'Portraits: The World's Top Photographers and the stories behind their greatest images', I thought I would check out the 'Nudes' book from this same series. I was disappointed with it. My disappointment may be from the fact that the 'Portraits' book was excellent and the 'Nudes' just did not live up to my expectations. If you are interested in a book from this series get the Portraits book. I have not seen the other books in the series so cannot comment on them.

Great for inspiration.......2005-08-10

Gives a nice variety of portraits and their history. Some of the images are just stunning. The photographers give some history to the images and a few tips. As critique I wish there were simply more photos and that the tips given by the photographers were more detailed. For example it would be nice to know what kind of light source (softbox, snut, etc.) was used instead of the more general description "I like to use only one light source." But then again, this is more a photo album than a how-to book. Overall I really liked it and it as given me many ideas on what to try next for portraits.

As Executive Director of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) from 1976 to 1992, Mostafa K. Tolba had as much insight into, and influence on, the development of international environmental policy as anyone. In this book, he tells the story of the negotiations that led to a number of landmark agreements, such as the Vienna Convention on Ozone and its Montreal Protocol, the Basel Convention on Hazardous Wastes, and the Biodiversity Convention. The book stands as the legacy of an important and charismatic figure who played a pivotal role during the first phase of global environmental diplomacy.

Tolba concentrates on the context in which governments conclude that particular issues are ripe for binding international cooperation and on the factors that influence them during negotiations--such as science, the media, nongovernmental organizations, politicians, business and industry, and the public. The areas he discusses include the evolution of environmental law, environmental soft laws (principles and guidelines rather than treaties), binding regional regimes such as the Regional Seas Program and the Shared Freshwater Resources Program, the ozone layer, global warming, hazardous wastes, the loss of biological diversity, and ways to make international agreements work.

Good Introduction.......2001-08-08

This book seems useful in that the author provides us comprehensive information of the multinational negotiations that the UNEP deeply got involved in the past. Yet, for those who expect the author to disclose some inside stories of the UNEP, this book might be a bit unsatisfactory.
