An awesome introduction on ufology.......2000-04-07

Although I have believed in UFO's and extraterrestrials my whole life, I haven't found many books that seem to take it seriously. Most books blow it all up out of proportion with ideas of planet wars and alien children out to kill us; however, this is one book I can finally recommend. It is very thick and well worth the price, as it covers a lot of ground. It lists all relevant case histories from prehistoric times to the present, making note of the relevance of each (military, government, TV, etc.), gives definitions of all the close encounters (CE's), and finally has a section with advice on what to do if you have a sighting, and organizations which you can contact. A wonderful introduction book and a great reference for those of us with more knowledge.

I am very disappointed with this book. alot of the so called facts are wrong. You have to be a rocket scientist to figure out the answer key. If you plan to enter a trivia contest with it you better find another place to get your facts.

You must be friends with your cat in order to train it.

Sorry - no miracles here. Phil Maggitti will teach you how to work with your cat, not how to overcome its basic nature and turn it into a dog that meows. That one sentence above perhaps best exemplifies why I love this book so much: Mr. Maggitti understands cats. And so will you, by the time you're done reading this book.

Having problems convincing your cat to use the litter box? Maybe it would help to know why he isn't using it. In this book you'll get a guide to many of the reasons why cats stop using litter boxes. You'll also find a whole lot of suggestions for how to fix such problems. (Hint: stop scolding your cat. Start being sneakily manipulative instead!) You'll even find out why traditional recommendations for teaching your new kitten to use his box might do more harm than good.

Having trouble getting your cat to sit still for grooming? There are two pages on that, including a guide to useful grooming products to have. There's information on how to clip a cat's claws safely (for both you and the cat), combing and brushing techniques, bathing your cat (although the book will point out that this shouldn't be necessary very often at all), routine ear care... and that's all before you get to "Basic Cat Training, Part I."

You'll learn about bridging stimuli, intermittent reinforcement, and other simple concepts that are incredibly useful when trying to alter a cat's behavior. (To be honest, this book did a better job of explaining intermittent reinforcement schedules than my psychology textbook did!) You'll learn to see "misbehaviors" as natural cat behaviors, and then find ways to work with or around them to avoid future problems.

There's a good discussion of possible motivations for training - which "tricks" you might want to teach for which reasons, and which tricks it's just silly to teach your cat if you don't have a reason for it. Mr. Maggitti did not write this book so that people could teach their cats stupid pet tricks - he wrote it so that we could better understand and live with our furred companions.

I love the author's tone. He has a quirky sense of humor that lightens the dry material considerably. He has a strong sense of what is good and not good for a cat, but doesn't get condescending and overly-moralistic about it (so maybe people will be willing to listen to him). The sense of scathing sarcasm he applies to certain, ahem, "training aids" and training methods is well-deserved, and hopefully will help new cat owners to get a better sense of the appropriate treatment of a cat. The author very clearly has a deep understanding and appreciation of cats.

Easy Compost is a splendid introduction to the art of composting. Easy to read and loaded with useful photos, the book provides the reader with a sound understanding of the process and importance of composting, while not being overwhelming. In particular I found the chaapters on composting indoors and commercial composts quite useful. All in all, a good book.

The definitive Vettriano volume.......2007-03-09

I own one of Jack's prints "The Singing Butler", and this book gives great insight into the thought process involved in producing such fine work, as well as many other color prints are to be found within. Jack has produced some of the finest paintings I've ever seen. I paint also, but only seascapes,landscapes,etc., so to view such a variety of excellent work in the Vettriano style is a rare treat for all who purchase this fine coffee table book.

Jack Vettriano is a unique observer of the Human Condition. Great book and a great artist that critics love to hate.......2001-12-05

In 1989, or was it 1990, I stood in the Scottish Academy's "Open" show in Edinborough and marvelled at the work of an unknown Scottish miner's work named Jack Vettriano - Dammit I wish I'd had the 300 pounds to afford that wonderful painting. This is a book that shows a romantic at heart with the courage to paint what he feels regardless of modern day art critics who have failed to realize that their written word no longer carries any weight in the world of art. Vettriano is a romantic Hopper, but better - he stylizes, preaches, decorates, creates and delivers wondrous works that remind us why we love painting and painters who ignore critics and fashion and trends and paint what they want to paint. This is a success story from the very dark depths of the public's ability to make superstars in art that give art critic stomach acid for centuries to come - when their names are forgotten, Vettriano's dismissed artwork will still be colelcted, sought-after and admired. Keep them cookin' jack!

While I am quite a fan of Vettriano's work, most of the painting I've seen displayed on the Portland Gallery's website were of the type as "The Singing Butler." The paintings in "Lovers and Other Strangers" are not all so innocent. While they are all wonderful compostions I wasn't expecting the highly sexual nature of the pieces. (Perhaps I should have from the title.) There are several of his in this book of the type I enjoy such as "After Midnight" and "Winter Light and Lavender" I am not such a fan of Quinn's choices. While it gives a broad view of Vettriano's work you might not enjoy it if your favorite pieces are "Singing Butler" and "Mad Dogs." I do like the composition of all the pieces as well as the use of color I was not always taken with the choice of models. If you, like myself, enjoy Vettriano's work that are character studies of average people you might not care for the sexually charged nature of most of the pieces in this book.

One Man Tango.......2001-06-07

I really enjoyed this book by Anthony Quinn. At first, I was put off by the way his thoughts jumped around, but in retrospect, I realize that this was just his way of getting his point across, and I became mesmerized by his thoughts and the disparity of his early years. Mr. Quinn did not flower his book with how great he was, or even sound like a celebrity, in the description of his life. In his early years he was very poor, and really let the reader feel his thoughts on his poverty, and how he fought to stay alive. It is a great example of coming from a life of nothing, with seldom having food to eat, to become a great actor, artist, lover, and family man.

Although he would never receive accolades as a husband, he truly loved his family. He mentioned several times, his grief at the death of his son and the loss of father.

He made many friends along the way, and treasured every one. Not caring whether they were paupers or kings.

In 1983, we had the pleasure of seeing and meeting Mr. Quinn on Broadway, in Zorba the Greek. We had invested in several of his paintings and sculptures, and was invited to a party for him at the Helmsley Palace in New York City. We were really impressed with his ability to encompass a room with his presence, while giving every person a piece of his persona.

This book is excellent reading, which keeps the reader waiting for his next thought. The world will truly miss this great man.

It is easy to misunderstand such a subtle philosopher as Kierkegaard. From his cryptic style and pseudonymns creeps a message heavily veiled, and best understood by a select view. Both "existentialism" and "irrational" become easily misused buzz words far too often applied to Kierkegaard. This book argues that such has been the case with Alasdair MacIntyre in his book AFTER VIRTUE. Fortunately, those who seem most on the mark in their interpretations of Kierkegaard have been gathered here in this collection of essays defending Kierkegaard against MacIntyre's claims that Kierkegaard is an irrational fedeist. KIERKEGAARD AFTER MACINTYRE is a brilliant and responsible exposition of the depths and intricacies of "the father of existentialism" by, whom I believe to be, the most "well-versed" Kierkegaardian scholars. Most helpful in this book was the light it shed on the influence both Kant and Artistotle had on Kierkegaard's conception of the self and decision-making, and the importance of understanding what are Kierekgaard's thoughts through all the pseudonymity...especially when it comes to his writings on the Judge and the Aesthete in Either/Or.

The book is highly enjoyable with concise essays that make their points while citing the various passages of Kierkegaard. One can easily check their refences if one is skeptical of the context. And what I enjoyed most was the fairness of the book. MacIntyre himself ends the collection of essays, and has the last words in response to the book's claims that he has radically misunderstood Kierkegaard. A good read and a definite must for anyone who wants to stay on top of the issues at hand in Kierkegaardian scholarship.

Forget about it.......2007-07-27

This is the worst reading assessment I have ever administered. It is good in theory, however not a practical assessment to administer. The students hate it, and it takes forever to find appropriate levels. The passages and word list do not match up leaving it difficult to establish the relationship between words in isolation and in context. Don't waste your time learning this assessment stick with the IRI or QRI.
