Great driving guide.......2006-11-18

I used this book on my recent driving trip to Zion, Bryce, Capitol Reef, Arches and Canyonlands. It was a real highlight on the trip. My friend, who was navigator, used it for "color commentary" on the drive. It's also a great supplement to other guidebooks such as Frommer's and Lonely Planet.

My only criticism is that the maps and illustrations would be better in color and the text is a bit verbose. In spite of those bits, it's still five stars.

EVERYONE should see Utah.......2006-10-06

We traveled all over Utah with this book and started to think of it as the Bible of Traveling Utah. Would highly recommend. Saw places that we would have missed if not for this book. Used it daily to plan our days.

Very good book.......2005-11-12

I went on the Grand Cirlce trip (Zion, Bryce, Capitol Reef, Arches, Canyonlands, and Glen Canyon/Lake Powell) and found this book very helpful in planning my trip. I gave it a 4 star only because it doesn't give the time required for each trip. For example, for the drive to Temple of Sun and Moon, from the book, it seemed like a 30 minute trip. However, from a separate source, it said the drive takes 2-3 days to finish. Nevertheless, still a good source.

From rescuing alligators, to rehabilitating birds of prey, to dealing with lions in city streets, and more, Wild Times is the fascinating true chronicle of a man with a unique love of wildlife, and is charged with the sometime difficult duty of protecting both humans and wild animals from one another. Wild Times is very entertaining and especially recommended reading for animal rights activists and wildlife enthusiasts.

This guy and his stories are great! He's a firefighter, policeman, paramedic who, for the last twenty years, has been called to remove bears from apartments, lions from city streets, pythons from worksops, and cougers from backyards. But his goal is to let people know of the growing chance that they'll be coming across an exotic, wild animal as their population increases in suburbs across the country, and to discourage people from buying and keeping this animals as pets!Excellent (lifesaving) snakebite protocol in the back of the book. Great stories for all ages.

Christmas Pins Past & Present Second Edition.......2006-03-30

This somewhat small book was extremely helpful to me in identifying the values of some recently purchased Weiss candle Christmas Tree Pins. It has also shown me what pins do not carry such a high value.
I would love to see more books like this one for holiday jewelry.
I would highly reccommend this book to anyone interested in Vintage and New Christmas Jewelry.

Excellent Book for the Novice or Advanced Collector.......2004-12-31

Very enjoyable book with great history of the designers of today and yesteryear that made Christmas Pins. Good color pictures with a price guide that reflects today's prices. If you are a new pin collector this is a must have at a reasonable price. If you are a seasoned collector you will enjoy reading about the short histories of your favorite designers.

A must have for collectors and dealers.......2004-09-20

This book by Jill is one of my favorite books, and not just because my own jewelry is included. Jill's wonderful photography showcases a wonderous variety of this collecting category. I doubt there are very many collectors who don't have a least one Christmas tree pin in their collection. And truly, it is very likely that every single woman who loves jewelry has at least one tree pin for holiday wear. This beautiful book is a perfect addition to any vintage costume jewelry reference library, for collectors and dealers alike. And it may even convert non-collectors! Thanks Jill!

Christmas Pins- Past and Present: Collector's Guide to Ident.......2000-05-27

This is the first Christmas jewelry book I had ever found (so I bought it right away) and I have thoroughly enjoyed it. I have used it often to shop for pins and identify my favorite designers. The photography is excellent! The variety is also great. I just wish there were more pictures and a more comprehensive collection of photos for each designer because certain makers aren't thoroughly covered (like Eisenberg and Art). I did appreciate the backgrounds given on the various companies and the dates they produced their jewelry. This is certainly a valuable addition to my library!

He wore a lot of hats for one lifetime--even a lifetime that lasted ninety-six years. His career was remarkable for the magnitude of its accomplishments. As author, editor, teacher, and frequent public speaker, Bailey helped create the science of horticulture. His writing, which spanned eighty-one years, was prodigious. Between 1890 and 1940 he edited 117 titles by 99 authors covering subjects in agronomy, economics, botany, animal husbandry, dairy industry, soils and fertilizers, plant pathology, commercial floriculture, and home economics.

This is a reprint of the revised and enlarged first edition of this classic, published in 1949.

The Classic Plant Identification Book.......2001-03-16

Lyberty Hyde Bailey, one of the first of Cornell University's long line of distinquished botanists has written some of the most important plant identification books in the library. All of his books are treasures to serious botanists and all are hard to find. Many of Bailey's books were used as textbooks but many were never resold; they are that valuble to botanists worldwide. This book is no exception. A valuable reference, it is used as a key to identify genus and species of many cultivated plants by providing such details as petal number, sepal number and location, fruiting habit, stamens and pistil appearance and placement and many more details necessary to plant identification. Bailey even includes the name of the scientists who gave the plant its first binomial nomenclature (the genus and species). Get this one if you can.

Read Between the Lines.......2007-08-19

This paperback* is useful as a cheap (book can be purchased at a deep discount) means to get an idea of what occurred in Missouri during the first part of the Civil War. Phillip's attempt to psychologically profile General Lyon with today's sensitivities provides the reader with comic relief in this account of some of the darkest days in our history.

*note: one needs to be able to read between the lines of Phillip's politically correct revisionist slant on history.

Startling portrait of a controversial, energetic figure.......2007-07-15

Damned Yankee provides a surprisingly detailed study of the life of U.S. Brig. Gen. Nathaniel Lyon. Author Chistopher Phillips probes deeply into Lyon's background, family, and military career. The product is a fascinating portrait of a determined and disturbing figure.

Nathaniel Lyon seized the initiative in Missouri, never allowing the determined secessionist governor an opportunity to guide the state out of the Union. While Missourians overall desired neutrality and elected secession convention delegates who soundly rejected secession, the elected state government leaned far more Southern than strictly neutral. From the moment of his entry onto the scene in St. Louis, Lyon worked tirelessly to frustrate Southern ambitions on the Federal arsenal. He butted heads with his more passive superiors in St. Louis; and he successfully conspired with various political figures to usurp and replace these impediments to his perceived mission.

Lyon is a unique personage with an intensely individual interpretation of right and wrong. The author's central theme is that Lyon sought to punish those who strayed from what Lyon perceived to be the right path; and the author is effective in presenting his case. Lyon's disagreements with superiors and fellow officers were frequently intense, often to the point of insufferable insubordination. His punishment of subordinates for infractions was also extreme to the point he was successfully court-martialed for excessive punishment.

The events in Lyon's career I found most disturbing related to his sanctioned and authorized reprisal massacres of Native Americans in California. This certainly makes his declaration of war in Missouri far more threatening: "Better, sir, far better, that the blood of every man, woman and child within the limits of the State should flow, than that she should defy the federal government."

As a military commander and organizer, Lyon proved incredibly capable. Here was a commander with the bold aggressiveness of Grant, the self-assured intensity of Forrest, and the discipline of Stonewall Jackson. However, he also possessed huge flaws such as an inability to get along, political inflexibility, and subversive intrigue that likely would have undone him had he not perished at Wilson's Creek. His eccentric and caustic beliefs were likely to produce outrages.

The author does a fine job of presenting the various viewpoints and back and forth of central characters. When he does present his own conclusions though they are not always convincing. The argument that Lyon was the irritant that leading to much of the eventual conflict in Missouri falls particularly flat, as does the pronouncement that without strong Federal action Missouri's pro-Southern governor and government would still have been unsuccessful in their aims.

I'm also highly skeptical of the author's characterization of Lyon's reasoning for fighting at Wilson's Creek as being a punitive crusade. Lyon was right that he must use his force or lose it. He was also correct that if he retreated without a fight he would give the secessionists control of southwest Missouri. I can't fault the logic of forcing an engagement before determining whether or not to retire in such a circumstance.

There are a few errors in the descriptions of events in Lyon's Civil War campaign, but overall they are well presented. I will note that I was disappointed the author did not point out Lyon's quartermaster Justus McKinstry was later successfully court-martialed for his activities in disrupting Union supply. No doubt that would have detracted from the author's case against Lyon's circumventing of a clearly broken supply system in St. Louis.

Despite the above observations about the author overselling points of his case I agree with his central theme. This is a well-researched book and provides a complete profile of Nathaniel Lyon as a soldier and a man.

Fascinating insight into Lyon's character.......1998-05-01

Christopher Phillips provides the reader with a fascinting insight into the character of Nathaniel Lyon. Rarely in reading a biography has the reader come away with such a clear and precise understanding as to what the central character's personality was really like.
By providing this insight into Lyon's character the reader can clearly understand what motivated Lyon to take the actions he took in the troubled 1860's in Missouri. Lyon was a not very likable individual, He brought a zealot's zeal to virtually everything he believed in or did regardless of the conseqences. In the end this zeal brought about his own death. A great read...two thumbs up.

Arthur Alexander - The Real Truth.......2001-08-16

After being a fan of Arthur Alexander in the early sixties he seemed to drop out of sight, occassional records but very little else seemed to appear, this book puts the record straight and fills in all those gaps. It also goes a long way to answering the reasons that he did not make it to the position in the music scene that his undoubted talent deserved. The book is very well written by Richard Younger who obviously felt very deeply about the subject, he deals with the problems that AA encountered in his music career and his private life. It was sad that at the very time that AA was begining to make a comeback and he was again showing the talent that was always there he was taken from us. He had become religious during the last few years and this seemed to have a calming effect on him and I am sure that he would have again had big selling records. Thank you Richard for an insight into the life of Arthur Alexander through the highs and lows.

Persecuted Jew and proud German soldier.......2006-05-05

This is the story of a Polish Jew Nachemia Wurmann fleeing the nazis as well as the Polish Home Army who found himself in a unique hiding place the uniform of a German soldier. Though not unique, for research has shown there were others like him, other than Europa Europa he is the only one to write about his experiences.
